2018 CAMPBELL FOOTBALL WEEK 12 | NOV. 17 | CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

CAMPBELL FOOTBALLBY THE NUMBERS

- 3 -Campbell is one of three programs in the NCAA FCS to average a home sellout in each of the last two seasons (2016 & 2017). Only Montana State and Mercer can make that claim, along with the Camels.

- 3 -Daniel Smith was one of three FCS quarter-backs to rush for 1,000 yards in 2017, joined by Montana State’s Chris Murray (1,124) and Kennesaw State’s Chandler Burks (1,103). Smith led all quarterbacks in rushing in 2017 with 1,272 yards.

- 4 -Four Campbell Football alumni have signed with NFL teams since the program was brought back in 2008. Defensive tackle Greg Milhouse joined the New York Giants and long snapper Danny Dillon signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2016, participating in NFL preseason games. Milhouse also saw preseason time with Seattle in 2017. Ugonna Awuruonye (Atlanta, 2016) and DeShawn Jones (Seattle, 2018) have also attended NFL rookie mini-camps.

- 5 -The Camels have posted at least five wins in each of the last five seasons, including six in 2017 to match a program best in the category. In the programs previous six years, the five win mark had only been reached once (6 in 2011).

- 7 -With Campbell’s week three matchup moved to Buies Creek, the Camels are on schedule to host seven home games in 2018, the most in program history. In its 11th season, Campbell has played six home games seven times, and showcased just five home dates three times (2008, 2009 and 2011).

- 7 -In its first season as a part of football in the Big South, Campbell will see plenty of new faces on the field, meeting seven first time opponents in 2017, including three in conference play.

- 33 -Campbell saw its streak of 33 straight games with a takeaway come to an end against Gard-ner-Webb. During the streak, (5 games in 2015, 10 in 2016, 11 in 2017, 7 in 2018), the Camels posted 74 total takeaways, including 46 inter-ceptions and recovered 28 fumbles. Campbell owns 17 takeaways through eight games in 2018.

- 35 -35 Camels made their debut in the Orange and Black in the 2018 opener. Six newcomers were in the starting lineup. In total, 15 redshirt fresh-men, 12 true freshmen and eight transfers saw game action, helping Campbell to a 49-26 win to open the season.

2018 CAMPBELL FOOTBALL WEEK 12 | NOV. 17 | CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

Saturday’s tilt will be the third all-time meeting between the Camels and Buccaneers on the gridiron, but first as Big South foes. CSU topped the Camels 30-10 at Barker-Lane Stadium in 2013, and claimed a 34-10 win in Charleston, S.C. in 2014.

CAMELS RECORD BACK-TO-BACK WINNING CAMPAIGNSWith the win at PC, Campbell notched its first ever Big South Conference football victory, also notch-ing back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in its modern history (since 2008). The Camels joined the Big South in 2018 after spending the program’s first 10 seasons in the Pioneer Football League (2008-17). CU also matched a single season record for wins with its sixth (2011, 2017).

LEADING THE CAMELSDaniel Smith owns 1,552 yards and 13 touchdowns passing, adding another 653 yards rushing and 13 more scores on the ground for the Camels, tying a CU single-season record for TDs on the ground. Redshirt freshman Caleb Snead snagged his eighth touchdown catch of the season at PC, a Big South best. The Lynchburg, Va. native also owns 715 yards receiving on 40 catches, averag-ing 17.9 yards per catch, the most in the league.

CU all-time leading receiver Aaron Blockmon has tallied 518 yards and three scores, while Rocky Reid adds 562 yards rushing and five touchdowns.

Jack Ryan, Campbell’s all-time leading tackler, tops the defense with 79 total stops, including 7.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Deontae Henderson adds 56 tackles and two interceptions, while Dorian Jones chips in 49 tackles. Damien Dozier has posted 11.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

SNEAD AGAIN NAMED BIG SOUTH FRESHMAN OF THE WEEKFor the fourth time this season, Campbell wide receiver Caleb Snead has been named the Big South’s Freshman of the Week. Snead tallied 55 yards receiving with a touchdown on five catches in Campbell’s 34-6 Big South win at Presbyterian. His third quarter, 36-yard touchdown grab from Daniel Smith on a fourth-and-six gave the game its final margin.

BIG CROWDS IN THE CREEKA record crowd of 6,712 attended Campbell’s Homecoming matchup and Big South home debut against Gardner-Webb. Four of the five largest crowds in Barker-Lane Stadium history have come on the last four homecoming dates, including 6,691 in 2017.

The greater than capacity crowd accounted for Barker-Lane Stadium’s 16th sellout since the facility was expanded to 5,500 seats in 2013, and third of 2018. Campbell has averaged a sellout in each of the past two seasons, joining only Montana State and Mercer as one of three programs in FCS to accomplish the feat. Barker-Lane Stadium has set an overall attendance record in two straight, and five of the last six seasons.

RYAN SETS ANOTHER CAREER MARKRedshirt senior linebacker Jack Ryan became Campbell’s all-time tackles for loss leader during Campbell’s week 9 matchup with Gardner-Webb, now with 35.0 career stops for loss. Ryan, already Campbell’s all-time leading tackler with 311, posted 1.0 TFL, including 0.5 sack against GWU. He totaled 11 tackles on the day.

The Camels amassed 12 tackles for loss against the Runnin’ Bulldogs, a season-best and the third most in program single game history. It was the most since posting 13 TFLs in a win at Stetson in 2013, and two short of the overall record (vs. Apprentice, 9/10/11).

ROLLER SERVING ON FCS SELECTION COMMITTEECampbell Director of Athletics Bob Roller has been selected as a member of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Selection Committee for a four-year term beginning with the current 2018 season. Roller, in his eighth year at Campbell, officially rotated onto the committee this month. The FCS Selection committee consists of 10 athletics directors from the FCS confer-ences that have automatic qualification status to the football playoffs. It is the only national commit-tee that is 100 percent comprised of athletic directors.

Roller is one of five incoming members on the committee, chaired by Central Arkansas Director of Athletics Dr. Brad Teague. The committee will select 24 teams to play for the championship, with 14 of those receiving at-large slots.

Selection weekend coincides with the last playing date of the regular season, November 17. After conference calls throughout the season, the selection committee will meet in Indianapolis to com-plete the selections for release on Sunday, November 18. Round 1 of the FCS Playoffs begins on November 24, culminating with the championship game on Saturday, January 5 in Frisco, Texas.

HARTSHORN NAMED CAMPBELL TROPHY SEMIFINALISTCampbell’s Thomas Hartshorn is one of 40 Football Championship Subdivision student-athletes to be named a semifinalist for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy®, presented by Fidelity Invest-ments®, by The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). The award, known as the “Academic Heisman”, recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. Merritt totaled 168 tackles in three seasons (2015-17) for the Camels after transferring from South Carolina State, seeing action in 31 Campbell games. The Union City, Ga. native was named First Team All-Pioneer Football League as a senior in 2017, leading the PFL and tying a Campbell single-season record with six interceptions. MIKE MINTER

HEAD COACH • 6TH YEARNEBRASKA ‘97

Former Carolina Panthers standout and Nebraska Football Hall of Famer Mike Minter enters his sixth season as head football coach at Campbell University in 2017. Over the last five seasons, Campbell has reset nearly every school record in the books. 23 Camels have been named first or second team all-conference, while 37 have been tabbed honorable mention all-league.

Campbell finished 2017 6-5 overall and 5-3 in PFL play, matching the program’s best overall and conference records in its 10 year history. The Camels also set a record for road wins (3).

Ten Camels earned All-PFL recognition, with safety Carolos Merritt and defensive end Emmanuel Olenga taking First Team nods. Quarterback Daniel Smith, wide receiver Aaron Blockmon and of-fensive tackle Shuler Littleton were also tabbed Second Team All-PFL, while five others were named honorable mention All-PFL.

Smith was named the PFL’s Offensive Freshman of the Year, and was a finalist for the STATS Jerry Rice Award for FCS freshman player of the year, finishing fourth in the final voting. Smith finished the 2017 regular season with the fourth-most rushing yards in the country, with his 1,272 yards on the ground leading all FCS freshmen and quarterbacks. Smith set Campbell single-season records for rushing yards, total offense (3,161), all-purpose yards (1,272) and touchdowns responsible for (30). After just one season, Smith is already Campbell’s career leader in touchdown passes with 18.

The Camels set 16 team single-season school records in 2017, plus 19 individual single-season marks on the way to their historic season. Additionally, CU set Barker-Lane Stadium records for average, total and single-game attendance for the second straight season.

In Minter’s fourth season at the helm, Campbell went 5-5 on the year, notching the program’s sec-ond season at .500 or better in its nine year history, and ranked third in the PFL in rushing offense, standing 19th nationally at 209 yards per game, as well as 17th in the country in total defense (322.1 yards per game). Sophomore wide receiver Aaron Blockmon also led the PFL in receiving yards (1,038) and touchdowns (10), headlining a group of 11 Camels that earned all-conference acco-lades.

The Camels ranked fifth in the nation in total defense in 2015 (279.3 per game), standing third in team sacks per game (3.55) and ninth in scoring defense (17.7). The team shattered program re-cords for all three categories, adding single season marks for tackles for loss (85.0) and total sacks (38.0).

16 Camels were honored on the conference’s All-PFL teams following the 2015 season, with junior running back De’Shawn Jones, redshirt senior defensive lineman Ugonna Awuruonye and senior defensive lineman Greg Milhouse Jr. all receiving First Team All-PFL accolades.

The PFL 2015 Freshman Defensive Player of the Year went to Campbell’s Jack Ryan. Four Camels were also named to the 2015 Academic All-PFL teams. The offseason saw another Campbell first, with defensive tackle Greg Milhouse Jr. (New York Giants) and long snapper Danny Dillon (Arizona Cardinals) both signing NFL contracts.

2014 saw the Camels notch their second-most total and conference wins at 5-7 overall and 4-4 in PFL play. A school record seven Camels, plus eight honorable mentions, were named to the 2014 All-Pioneer Football League teams, including four first teamers. Eight CU student-athletes, with six first team members, were tabbed PFL All-Academic.

In Minter’s first season as head coach at CU, the Camels set 21 offensive team records, including rushing yards (2,800), passing yards (2,436), and total offense (5,236). The Camels also established four defensive marks, including sacks (27), and posted three team records on special teams.

Senior Kurt Odom became Campbell’s first football All-America selection, earning Third Team honors from the Sports Network. Odom was also named First Team All-PFL while seven Camels took home honorable mention nods.

Minter picked up his first win as a collegiate head coach in his home debut as the Camels cruised to a 56-21 triumph over UVA-Wise.

Minter, a member of two national championship teams at Nebraska and the Panthers’ 2003 Super Bowl squad, joined the Fighting Camel program after serving as assistant coach at Liberty University in 2012 and Johnson C. Smith University in 2011. He also brought head coaching experience from First Assembly Christian School in Concord, where he guided his teams to 33 victories and two state titles in three seasons.

During his 10-year NFL career, Minter earned a starting safety role six games into his rookie year in 1997, and held that position until he retired after the 2006 season. A second-round draft choice, he helped lead the Panthers to three playoff trips, the 2003 NFC Championship and a berth in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Minter and his wife Kim have four children – Michael Jr., Isaiah, McKenna and Brianna.

2018 CAMPBELL FOOTBALLWEEK 12 | NOV. 17 | CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

DEFENSE HANGS A ZEROCampbell picked up its sixth modern era shutout (since 2008) with a 42-0 win over Shaw. It marked the Camels third straight season with at least one shutout.

EXTRA POINT STREAK SNAPPED Before Colin Gary’s first quarter kick was blocked at Presbyterian, Campbell had converted 85 con-secutive extra point attempts, dating back to 2016. Colin Gary is 36-for-37 this season, and 44-for-45 in his career.

SNEAD TAKES THIRD BIG SOUTH FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK HONORAfter a record-setting performance in Campbell’s Big South debut at Monmouth, Caleb Snead was named the conference’s freshman of the week.

Snead, a redshirt freshman, set Campbell single-game records with 188 receiving yards and 10 catches, adding two touchdowns in the Camels’ 38-21 loss at Monmouth. The Lynchburg, Va. native passed Aaron Blockmon’s previous all-time receiving yards high of 180 yards (9/10/16 at Chowan) and Preston Dodson’s former receptions mark of nine (9/24/11 vs Jacksonville). The rookie’s 188 receiving yards are the second most by a FCS freshman this season (Dev Holmes, Albany, 238 yards, 8 catches).

The honor marks Snead’s third Big South Freshman of the Week nod (9/10, 9/17). Snead has been named to the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award watch list, named for the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver and presented in the postseason to the FCS freshman player of the year.

EARLY SUCCESS LEADS TO WINSMonmouth’s first quarter touchdown was only the second such score allowed by the Camels to that point this season. Previously, only Coastal Carolina, a FBS program, had found the end zone in the first quarter against the Camels.

In fact, the Camels owned an 89-10 first quarter edge, and a 138-33 advantage through their first six games this season. The Camels have held opponents without a first half TD five times, with the only exceptions being Coastal Carolina and Monmouth. On the other side of the ball, Campbell also saw its streak of first possession TDs come to an end at Monmouth (four games).

Campbell outscored its opponents 121-10 over its three game winning streak.

SNEAD NAMED TO JERRY RICE AWARD WATCH LISTCampbell rookie standout Caleb Snead is one of 15 nationally named to the initial STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award watch list, named for the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver and presented in the postseason to the FCS freshman player of the year since 2011.

It is the third consecutive year that a Camel has been named to the Rice Award watch list, following Elijah Burress in 2016 and Daniel Smith, who was a finalist in 2017.

Snead leads the Big South in yards per catch at 18.9 while tying for the league lead in touchdown receptions with seven. He owns a Campbell-best 660 receiving yards, a CU freshman record and the second-most by a Camel all-time.

JONES NAMED BIG SOUTH’S FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK 10/8After notching a pick-six in Campbell’s historic win over Wagner, Dorian Jones was named the Big South’s Freshman of the Week. The redshirt freshman defensive back added four tackles and a pass breakup in addition to his second quarter interception return for a touchdown in a dominant 49-3 win for Campbell over Wagner.

With pressure coming from Damien Dozier, Jones picked off Wagner’s Luke Massei, coasting 30 yards for the touchdown to put Campbell ahead 35-3 before the halftime break. The interception was one of four for the Camels on the day, who posted six total takeaways in the win. The CU defense held Wagner to just 85 passing yards. Campbell’s six takeaways tied for its second most ever in a single game, marking the team’s most since 2011. Over the last three games, Campbell has held opponents to just 10 points.

The Orlando, Fla. native is the third Camel to be named Big South Freshman of the Week this sea-son (Celeb Snead: 9/10, 9/17; Justice Galloway-Velazquez: 9:24), and the 10th time a Camel has earned a weekly honor from the conference in 2018.

SAFETY FIRSTThe Campbell defense recorded a safety for the first time since 2013 (9/28 at Valparaiso) against North Alabama, putting the Camels ahead 9-0 on the way to a 23-0 first quarter lead. The safety was the third recorded by a Campbell defense in its modern era, also tallying a safety against Morehead State in 2009 (10/31).

RYAN TABBED FCS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKRyan posted a Campbell season-high 15 tackles with 3.0 stops for loss, including a sack, leading the Camels over visiting North Alabama Saturday, 30-7. The redshirt senior also broke up a pass and added a QB hurry in the win. Ryan also became Campbell’s all-time tackles leader in the victory, passing Milton Brown’s (2008-11) career mark. Ryan now owns 276 career stops.

Ryan was also named the Big South’s Defensive Player of the Week following his record-setting per-formance. The 15 tackle performance, his 11th career double figure stops game, tied for the second most in his career (16 vs. Jacksonville in 2017). Ryan’s 3.0 TFLs matched a career high and tied for fifth most by a Camel ever in a single game.

CAMPBELL AGAINST THE FBSCampbell’s week three game against Coastal Carolina marked the first time a FBS program has visited a FCS foe in a true road game since Army traveled to Yale in 2014, and just the third time since 2008. The matchup was originally slated for Saturday, September 15 in Conway, S.C., but was shifted up three days and to Buies Creek due to the impending threat of Hurricane Florence.

The game marked Campbell’s third all-time (since 2008) against a FBS member, making trips to Old Dominion in 2013 and Appalachian State in 2014.
