A Milestone Year
From the CEO
The 2018 Annual Summary details the accomplishments of our organization as it celebrated its 40th anniversary this past year. The success achieved in this milestone year is a direct result of the dedication of our Board of Trustees, employees, volunteers and donors, past and present. Our Senior Leadership team continues to answer the call of our mission, showing outstanding commitment in every way.
This year we acquired Kindred Hospice, were recognized as one of Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare in the country for the seventh time, launched our new Digital Education and Outreach initiative and welcomed a new Chief Medical Officer. Our employees and volunteers continue to impact the patients in our care and their families significantly every day, ensuring we stay true to our vision – that no one ends the journey of life alone, afraid or in pain.
This has been a year of growth and promise on our journey to retain our standing as the hospice of choice, employer of preference, training center of excellence and the community’s trusted partner for comprehensive end-of-life care in Southern Nevada.
It remains an honor for me to lead this organization.

Elaine Wynn Palliative Care Program (EWPCP)
THE ELAINE WYNN PALLIATIVE CARE PROGRAM GOALS IMPROVE the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with advanced illness.
MAINTAIN the patient in a community-based setting and prevent unnecessary treatments and hospitalizations.
PROVIDE an interdisciplinary approach to care coordination including physical, emotional, spiritual and social service needs.
7,898 palliative consultations were provided in hospitals. 251 patients
received palliative care at home and overall, 2,810 patients received palliative care.
Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with advanced and serious illness. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness, whatever the diagnosis. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patients and their families.
A team of doctors, nurses and other specialists work with patient care providers to deliver an extra layer of support. Palliative care is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness, and can be provided together with curative treatment.
Elaine Wynn Palliative Care Program (EWPCP)
Michael* was an 80-year-old man living alone with end-stage renal disease, and multiple myeloma. He was undergoing chemotherapy and dialysis and driving across town to appointments. His oncologist referred him to the Elaine Wynn Palliative Care Program for support in his complex healthcare journey.
The palliative care social worker addressed transportation concerns with Michael, but Michael wished to contin-ue driving himself to his appointments. His drive to seek treatments reflected his drive for living his life to the fullest.
As weeks passed, the fatigue from driving caught up to Michael. His disease was progressing, but he was still not ready to stop the curative treatments that were not adding to his quality of life.
The palliative care nurse gave recommendations to settle the symptoms Michael was experiencing. The palliative care team also educated Michael on the importance of having his wishes in writing, and helped him with that. With those in place, Michael continued to attend his treatments and regular follow-up visits.
One day, he expressed to the team that it was time to focus more on his quality of life. Michael decided to stop his treatments and chose to continue with Nathan Adelson Hospice, where he received compassionate care in the comfort of his home.

Art Therapy
Massage is a therapeutic art that relieves stress, headaches, backaches, fatigue and restlessness. Specific techniques are used to meet the medical
needs of each patient
A series of specific techniques applied to the feet are used to improve circulation to organs and glands, and relieve
discomfort of acute symptoms
Certified therapy dogs and cats bring great joy to patients. Spending time with a loving animal can
reduce depression, lower blood pressure and bring comfort for patients, family and staff
Reiki is a form of energy work that complements traditional healthcare and seeks to restore harmony to
the body’s natural rhythms. The warmth generated by the practitioner’s energy is transferred to the patient and helps
him to relax, often lessening discomfort
Art Therapists work with patients and family members to explore unresolved emotional issues
Essential oils are distilled from selected plant materials and influence the body in many ways, offering
therapeutic value for muscle aches and pains, anxiety, nausea and respiratory difficulties
Bonnie Schreck passed away in February 1999 and her husband, Frank, established the program to keep her memory alive. Many complementary therapies reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Our staff is comprised of certified therapists and licensed practitioners who offer caring emotional support and
attention to the mind, body and spirit.
