President’s Report

BY NICK CHIGWIDDENPresident

The 2018 season was one that gained momentum as the year progressed. The pre-season was not ideal with us unable to appoint our new coach Mark Stone until December, which meant Mark didn’t really start working with the player group until January. The program and game plan that Mark wanted to enforce did take the group some time to embrace and implement, which resulted in us having a poor first half of the season. Once the team gained a thorough understanding of Mark’s game plan and showed the discipline to enforce it we started playing some excellent football going on to win our last six games in a row, three of those against top 5 teams. Unfortunately, the run was too late though and we were unsuccessful in making the Finals, which was a major disappointment.

The excellent work Mark and the Football Department have done in developing the team over the last twelve months, combined with some strong recruiting provides us with a sense of optimism for the 2019 season. A core group of players have now played 50 plus games together and their bodies have matured and strengthened allowing us to match it with the successful teams in the SANFL.

The return of Corey Gregson from Geelong and Luke Partington recruited from the West Coast Eagles will add some class and pace around the football. Liam McBean and Brad Agnew also re-join the team after a year travelling overseas, which will help strengthen both our forward and back ends.

After a long hard pre-season the players are ready for the year ahead and are focused on continual improvement and developing as a team into a respected and feared outfit that is ruthless in its pursuit for success.

We had another positive result financially for 2018 recording a consolidated net profit of $247,549. This is the 3rd year in a row that we have achieved a profit providing a stable financial position for the club. Whilst it is an excellent result, we remain in a very challenging environment for SANFL clubs. Crowd numbers are declining and mem-bership and sponsorship revenue is difficult to find. Positive on field performances will certain-ly help maintain and grow these areas and with the promising signs of improvement for 2019 we believe we can increase both sponsorship and membership revenue this year.

The venue continues to provide outstanding service and value to patrons, which has allowed the meals to increase 12% on last year and at the same time build an excellent reputation. Gaming revenue continued to decline, however we have reinvested back into this area, with the view to re-verse the trend by installing some new machines, freshening the room up and implementing the Jackpot Club loyalty program. This investment has seen some positive early results which is en-couraging.

Our major challenge continues to be the level of debt we have and whilst we decreased this again by $275,000 last year, through the land divest-ment funds it is an area the board continues to focus on and work with the City of Holdfast Bay Council to look at strategies to decrease and ulti-mate remove this debt. I must thank the council for their ongoing support in providing interest re-lief on the loan, as without this support the club would be in a very challenging financial position.

We have provided a financial executive summa-ry in the annual report that succinctly details our current financial position for you, rather than me expanding on it here.

ACH Group has settled in as an excellent tenant upstairs and has proven to be a real positive for

the club providing consistent rent and the abili-ty to leverage their members to utilise our bistro facilities.

The other half of the area upstairs, in what was the function centre has been converted into an outstanding gym for our playing group to access. This facility would be the best in the league and has an extensive range of equipment thanks to a sponsorship with Fitness Warehouse and is a wonderful asset for Mark and the team.

ACH Group has also partnered with the Football Club taking over the naming rights of the com-plex, which is now known as ACH Group Stadi-um. This is after Gliderol relinquished the naming rights after 10 years, which has been a wonderful partnership with the Glenelg Football Club over that time. I must thank Ben Lumbers and Tom Ainscough for their support over all these years and it is fantastic to see Gliderol will remain as our guernsey sponsor for 2019 and 2020.

I would like to congratulate our CEO, Glenn Elliott and his team on the commitment and passion they have shown, and the improvements they have made over the last twelve months. It is an exciting time ahead both on and off the field and they remain focused on continual improvement and striving for success in all areas of club.

A list of acknowledgements is printed later in the report thanking everyone who has been involved last season, so I will not repeat that. However, I must thank my fellow board members for the support they have provided me and their hard work across the year. To all our sponsors at every level thank you for your continued association with the Glenelg Football Club, without your sup-port we could not survive.

To all the volunteers, members, past players and supporters, thank you for remaining loyal to the Tigers and we will be doing everything in our power to ensure 2019 will be a year to enjoy and remember.

2019 is a year of anticipation and excitement and one that with a lot of hard work will deliver the rewards and success we are striving for both on and off the field.

Thank you again for your continued support and please join up as a member, as you are a critical part of the Clubs future success.

Glenelg Football Club Inc & Glenelg Footballers’ Club Inc.Financial Summary for the 31 October 2018 Financial Statements:

The Consolidated Statutory Net Profit for the year ended 31 October 2018 for the Glenelg Footballers’ Club (Venue) and the Glenelg Football Club (Football) was $247,549. Whilst this appears to be a substantial decrease from the previous financial year results of $681,739, you need to bear in mind the one off extraordinary items that were included in the 2017 results. As explained last year the following need to be adjusted for the year ended 31 October 2017 to get a fair comparison:

• Payroll Tax Refund of $163,025;• The forgiveness of interest on the City of Holdfast Bay loan of $123,598; and• The additional SANFL Land Divestment Distribution of $137,000.

Please see below table to show our adjusted Net Profit results:

As can be seen from the above table if you adjust for the extraordinary items and theSANFLLandDivestmentdistributionthenourresultsthisfinancialyearareonpartolastyearandindicatefinancialstabilitywithintheClubs.Italsoshouldbenotedthatour2017financialresultsincludedthebusinessinterruptioninsuranceproceeds we received of $177,221 for the closure of the function centre as a result of the collapse of the roof on the HY Sparks Grandstand. Further to this in 2018 an adjustment of $75,382 was recorded as a Loss on Revaluation of the Change Rooms in the Glenelg Football Club to enable the change rooms to be recorded as nil in our Balance Sheet. If you add back depreciation and the Loss on Revaluation oftheChangeRoomsthentheConsolidatedCashNetProfitfor2018was$157,174compared to $112,594 for the year ended 2017.

Whilstthefinancialresultsshowstabilityunfortunatelywestillneedtolookforimprovementsinourfinancialresultstoassistusinreducingourdebtandreinvest-ing back in the Clubs. We appreciate the ongoing support we have received form the City of Holdfast Bay as without their support of freezing interest on our debt we wouldbeinaverydifficultfinancialposition.OurmainsourceofincomeinGamingRevenue continues to decrease with 2018 recording a 7.5% decrease. Whilst we ac-knowledge the social responsibilities around gaming, we need to respect that this is a major revenue line for the Club and hence we have recently changed our Loyalty programme and purchased new machines in an effort to increase this revenue stream. We continue to focus on our Bar and Kitchen sales, with our Kitchen sales showing a 12% increase which is a testament to our kitchen staff. We will continue to strive to improve the quality and variety of our meal offerings and invest in improving our customer service. Over the past two years we have managed to control our costs in the Venue but there is only so much we can cut before customer service is affected.

On the football side we have been hit with a decrease in income for memberships and attendanceswhichwehopetoarrestwithimprovedonfieldresultsintheupcoming2019 season. The pleasing thing is that our Sponsorship remains steady and is one of the highest in the SANFL which credit needs to be given to the Commercial team. Our football expenses increased by 7% in the 2018 year and again we continue to review our football department expenditure to ensure we minimise costs without affectingonfieldperformances.

Based on the original SANFL Land Divestment Distribution projected of $2m which we are still due to receive $1,225,000 by October 2022 we are projecting our debt to the ANZ Bank to be $227,666 and the City of Holdfast Bay to be $1,029,922 at the end of October 2022. As can be seen by our recent trading results we will struggle to extinguish the balance of our debt of $1,257,589 solely from our trading results by October 2022 and therefore the Board are still looking for strategies to clearthebalanceofdebtbythetimewereceivethefinalSANFLLandDivestmentdistribution in October 2022.

We look forward to a successful 2019 football year which would go a long way to helpingimproveourfinancialresults.

The Club has not deviated from pursuit of the two key challenges necessary to achieve respect within the SANFL – win-ning football matches and financial sus-tainability. The key outcomes for 2018 are that we again met the SANFL mandated trading result and further reduced debt for the third successive year. The Club re-mains committed to our Three -Year Stra-tegic Plan which includes:

• Purpose: to win premierships and en- gage our members and community

• Vision: be the leading SANFL Club on and off the field

Members shall receive a briefing of the above at the AGM.

Glenelg Club

We compete against some of SA’s largest hotels which all specialize in bistro, gam-ing, and bar services – but they don’t play football. We are now a competitive ven-ue within the local market. Profitability is non-negotiable as it is the only means by which we can continue to finance our extensive football programs and to invest in infrastructure. Our aim is to be a ven-ue of choice within the market which is more than just being a football club that provides a hospitality service – there is a clear point of difference.

SponsorshipGlenelg again achieved a strong outcome

underpinned by Gliderol as major sponsorand stadium naming rights partner for a tenth consecutive year. In the changed sporting landscape within South Austra-lia, Gliderol will continue with the Club as Guernsey Partner. In an exciting an-nouncement we welcome ACH Group as Stadium Naming Rights Partner.

Membership

Resilient is the apt word to describe our members with most joining because ‘Glenelg is my Club’. We all seek on field success culminating in finals participa-tion. The results towards the latter end of the season, six wins in succession, provide an outstanding launch pad for the 2019 season. We shall provide all the latest information to keep Tiger fans up to date with all happenings within the Club. To all true believers, thank you for your non- conditional support of the Club.

Football

Football is our business, or more partic-ularly successful football results must be our business. Every Club craves third party respect which can only come about through winning matches and finals par-ticipation. Mark Stone’s resilience and courage to remain true to his coaching val-ues was tested in the first nine games last year only to be rewarded in the latter half of the season. Going forward our players understand the methodology, commitment and passion required for success.

The beginning of pre-season 2018 saw the club begin the search for a new coach. The search led to the club appointing former Fre-mantle Assistant Coach, Mark Stone. Mark joined the Glenelg FC after a fourteen year career in the AFL which saw him involved with West Coast, Sydney and Fremantle. A new coach brings new ideas and a new game plan which Mark rolled out in the New Year. The start to the season was challenging with the players needing to adopt to a new mes-sage and a new coaching style. Chris Curran joined Andrew Bradley as Co-Captain of the GFC for the year, Andrew was coming off a season which saw him suffer a second serious shoulder injury. The addition of Chris enabled Andrew to concentrate on his rehabilitation without the full impact of being Captain of the club. Marlon Motlop, Matt Snook, Aaron Joseph, Jesse White and Max Proud rounded out the 2018 leadership group.

Several new recruits joined the club at the beginning of pre-season. Jesse White (ex-Collingwood), Luke Reynolds and Marlon Motlop (ex-North Adelaide) were three key recruits brough to the club to fill the void left by Liam McBean and Brad Agnew (overseas). Zac Hawkins, Tom Feely, Sean Davidson, Tom Corcoran, Neil Vea Vea, Daniel Weetra, Nick Amato, Tim Mackenzie and Derrick Wan-ganeen also signed on to play in season 2018.

In the early rounds of the season, supporters saw glimpses of the style Mark was impart-ing on the playing group. It wasn’t until late in the year that things began to fall into place. A more consistent effort and solid leadership on the field saw the playing group hold each other accountable for their actions. Six wins in the final six games was a pleasing finish to the year and saw the side finish the season with nine wins nine losses. A slight improve-ment from the previous year. Congratulations to

Max Proud on winning the John H Ellers Best and Fairest award. An outstanding result giv-en Max’s struggle with injury over the years.

Several players made their debut in the black and yellow. Jesse White, Marlon Motlop, Der-rick Wanganeen, Nick Amato, Tim Mackenzie, Jack Yates, Tobin Cox, Brad McCarthy, Brad Close, Luke Reynolds, Neil Vea Vea, Zac Haw-kins, Sam Walker and Tom Feely. The emer-gence of McCarthy, Walker, Close and Cox from our junior ranks and country zone was very pleasing.

A number of players have decided to leave the GFC since the end of season 2018. The club would like to thank the following players for their commitment to the Glenelg Football Club: Terry Milera, Neil Vea Vea, Tim Mack-enzie, Sean Davidson, Tim Sullivan, Damon Robinson, Brad Noble, Sam Walker Congrat-ulations to Tobin Cox (Port Adelaide) on his selection in the 2018 AFL National Rookie Draft.

The GFCW entered 2018 with a completely dif-ferent side after rule changes enforced by the SANFL to assist new teams South and Sturt and several players drafted into the AFLW competition, decimated the team of 2017. A new coach, Aleks Bojanic took over from Na-relle Smith who was appointed Reserves Coach. Aleks struggled to unite the group and a change was made mid-year. Jason Fairall (Morphettville Park Women’s Coach) took on the role. He set about focusing on improving the basic skills of the team and empowering the playing group to have input. The team fin-ished with one win for the year. Cass Hart-ley again set the example for her team mates to follow. Tamsyn Morriss and Madi Freeman were given their opportunity at Senior level and are players to watch in the future. Ellie Kellock was fearless in her attack on the ball and Ang Moritz worked hard at the stoppages. Lexia Edwards retired at the end of her

second season with the club. Lex has em-braced the GFC from the moment she became part of the team. Her ability to play under du-ress and help lift her team mates was great to watch. Fortunately, Lex won’t be lost to the club. She has taken up an assistant coach-ing role alongside Jason. Thanks, Lex for the commitment and passion you displayed for the club. Tammy Scott is the quiet achiever of the coaching panel. Tammy is reliable, trust-worthy and avid about football. Her respectful approach to all has endeared her to everyone associated with the GFCW team.

The club would like to thank Layne Trembath for his time and effort in coaching the Under 18 team in season 2018. Congratulations to Kieron Hicks, his assistant coaches and the players for winning the Under 16 Premiership. Kieron showed great poise and an ability to educate players which reflected in the profes-sional manner the boys played the game. Well done to all involved.

The loss of Senior Assistants Michael Mc-Fadyen and Nathan McDowall in the early stages of the season threw more pressure on Senior Coach Mark Stone. Narelle Smith took on the challenge of coaching the Reserves and assisting Mark for the second half of the season. Narelle was invaluable and provided great support to Mark. Chris Okely (IT- Foot-ball Department) also left midway to pursue new challenges. Chris worked tirelessly for the club over several years. He would often venture to the South-East to assist with SE Academies and spent much of the year at the club working with all departments and teams. A huge thank you to Chris for his devotion and passion for the GFC. High Performance Manager Brad Keller left the club after two seasons. Brad was offered a job with the Fre-mantle Football Club. A well deserved oppor-tunity to test himself in an elite competition.

Brad added professionalism to the club pre-viously unseen. He developed a great rapport with the players and was able to build their trust. We wish Brad all the very best as he embarks on a new challenge in the West.

I would like to take this opportunity to again congratulate the North Adelaide Football Club. Well done to Coach Josh Carr, Football Manager Darryl Wintle, Captain Max Thring and General Manager Greg Edwards on win-ning the 2018 Premiership.

Another season is approaching. The chal-lenge is to begin season 2019 in the man-ner in which we ended 2018. North showed a climb from the bottom half of the ladder to a Premiership can be achieved. The return of McBean and Agnew and the additions of for-mer Glenelg junior Cory Gregson and recruit Luke Partington has our list in good shape.

With the ongoing encouragement and support from the Leagues and Clubs within the South East many young qual-ity players have been given the oppor-tunity to represent the Glenelg Football Club in season 2018 directly due to these academies. The Glenelg Football

Club provided four academies, at Mount Gambier, Millicent, Bordertown and Naracoorte Football Clubs. We sincerely thank the local clubs for offering their facilities. Our sincere thanks to Ciaron Buckley, Andrew Nitschke, Owen Butler and Scott Carberry as coaches of these groups. A PROUD MOMENTHow Max Proud rose from the canvas to become Glenelg Club Champion

BY ANDREW CAPEL

MAX Proud thought he was done.

LyinginWakefieldHospitalwithhisheadthrobbingafterhaving four metal plates and a bunch of screws insert-ed into the right side of his face, the popular utility - at age 25 - didn’t think he could endure any more pain and misfortune.

“At the time that was the tipping point for me,’’ Proud said after he was hospitalised following a freak injury that saw hisface“cavein’’duringhisfirstleaguegameof2017(round six) against Norwood at The Parade.

“I’d had a bad injury run in the years before that and was just back into the league team and within a couple of minutesofthefirstquarterIwascleanedupinamarkingcontest.

“I’ve come in from the side for a mark and (Norwood’s) Lewis Johnston came from the other side and I copped his knee in my face.

“I knew straight away that I was in trouble because I felt the impact and then the whole right side of my face went numb.

“I felt around my eye socket and there was a big depres-sion there, so I knew my face had caved in.

“It was a pretty serious injury and while I was lying in hospital I thought that’s it for me, I’m done with footy, because I was sick of all the injuries.’’

Proud spent three nights in hospital and had decided in his own mind to pull the pin on his league career after a succession of injuries in the previous three seasons, which had left him battered from pillar to post.

Theyincludedabrokenwrist,brokenfinger,abadlydam-aged ankle and two ripped hamstrings.

Theylefthim, onmostoccasions, havingtofighthiswayback into the league team through the reserves.

But after catching up for a beer a week later with then Glenelg high performance manager Brad Keller, Proud was talked into having second thoughts.

“Brad told me not to jump to any conclusions and to rest up and see where I was at a few weeks later,’’ Proud recalled.

“Sure enough, once I started to feel better I was keen to get back into it.

“I went back and played (returning after just six weeks and donning a mask to protect his rebuilt face) and at the end of the year I assessed everything again and found that I just couldn’t leave the club.

“I asked myself ‘why do I keep playing’ when I’d had such a bad run with injury.

“But I couldn’t make the decision to walk away, which made me realise that I didn’t really want to go.

“If I was sure I probably would have moved on but there was too much doubt in my mind.

“I was thinking that if Glenelg starts winning games, which I was sure it was going to do, and had success then I wouldn’t be able to deal with it because I badly wanted to be a part of it.

“I also felt that I was due for a change of luck physically.’’

Proud, who played most of his junior football at Sacred Heart College but won a SANFL under-18s premiership with the Tigers under Kris Massie in 2010, kept going.

And, much to his surprise, he was voted into Glenelg’s 2018 league leadership group under new coach Mark Stone.

“Thatwasabig-timevoteofconfidenceinme,’’saidProud, now 26.

“I’d wanted to be in that group in the previous few years but I wasn’t there because I had to concentrate more on my footy and getting my body right, even though I felt I was a leader among the group.

“Stoney hadn’t seen much of me as a player but he knew I was a leader and said he viewed me that way, which gave mealotofconfidence’’

Stone also played Proud, who had been used in a variety of roles by the Tigers, including as a key defender, key forward and even in the ruck, in his best position at full back.

“I’ve always liked full back, felt that it was my best and most natural spot,’’ Proud said.

“Prior to that I’d played a bit of everywhere, including the ruck because we didn’t have a second ruck and I’m not a ruckman, being just 190cm. “I don’t mind being a swingman but playing in the back-lines has always been my preference.’’

Proudjustifiedhisnewcoach’sconfidence.

Heplayedeverygameinaseasonforthefirsttimeandwas so good and consistent in a side that won its last six games that he etched his name into the Glenelg history books by winning the John H Ellers Medal as club cham-pion.

“A PROUD MOMENT” Proud, who not only silenced his opponent each week but averaged 17 disposals, was almost lost for words when his name was called out as best and fairest winner, particu-larly after being so close to walking away from the club.

Stone paid tribute to Proud’s “reliability and consisten-cy’’.

“When his name was put on the whiteboard each week you just knew exactly what you were going to get from him,’’ he said.

Proud described winning the award as “an unreal feeling’’.

“It means everything to me because it was a reward for all the effort and hard work I’d put in,’’ he said.

“Internally I think I’ve always been valued as a club man but to be seen as the best and fairest for that year and to have your name etched in the history of the club along-side so many legends - some who I still see a fair bit of around the place - was really special.

“I get reminded of it all the time because I bump into peo-ple in the street that I haven’t seen for a while and they’ll say ‘congratulations’ and I realise again that it’s a pretty big deal.

“At the time it was a bit of a blur because it all happened very quickly but when you get time to sit back and actual-ly think about it a bit more, well, I’m very, very proud of it.’’ Butnotsatisfied.

While a personal award is great, Proud - who also wants

to become a 100-game player for the club (he currently sits on 77) - covets team success.

And Glenelg is the last of the 10 SANFL clubs to have playedfinals,notfeaturinginSeptembersince2011.

“I want to help take the club out of a pretty dull period and create a culture that becomes a winning culture and winaflag,’’saidProud, whoworksasaprojectmanagerfor Partek Constructions.

“To be able to say at the end of my career that I was there when we turned the culture around, with the core group and leaders that we have now, and take us in the direction that we want to go would be something that I would really cherish.

“We are developing a trademark as a playing group, what we live and stand for, like the Bloods culture at the Syd-ney Swans that ‘Stoney’ was a part of (as an assistant coach).

“Glenelg hasn’t had the success the club, supporters and community would like and I know what it would mean for everyone for us to start winning regularly and eventually getaflag.

“Me and (teammate) Brad Agnew, who is one of my best mates, sometimes talk about how good it would be to go back to the club after winning a premiership, to see what Jetty Road would be like.

“It’s stuff you do think about and we think we are on the right track to making it happen.’’

THREE IN A ROW FOR TIGERS

Cream rises to the top as Glenelg under-16s claim three-peat

BY ANDREW CAPEL

KIERON Hicks knew he had a talented team.

And when it mattered most, the cream rose to the top.

After a topsy-turvy minor round campaign where Glenelg won five of its seven matches but lost to West Adelaide by 33 points and was thumped by Wood-ville-West Torrens by 70, the Tigers stepped up a gear in the finals.

Two weeks after being taught a football lesson by the Eagles, Hicks’ team eclipsed the Bloods by 40 points in a semi-final and then thrashed minor premier Norwood by 63 points in the grand final at Woodville to claim a rare treble of SANFL under-16 premierships.

The stunningly one-sided victory followed grand final wins against the Eagles in the previous two years.

“It’s pretty special for our club to win three (flags) in a row,’’ Hicks said.

“We had a very talented group and spread the load throughout the season, using 43 players.

“It was a very strong talent pool but no-one played as an individual.

“Everyone played their role, some in positions they weren’t used to, and that was a key to our success.

“Our philosophy was for each player to know their role in the side, to focus on playing that well and then trusting your teammates to do their job.

“That enabled us to get a great team result.’’

Glenelg’s strength was illustrated in it boasting seven State under-16 players - Luke Edwards, Kaine Baldwin, Cooper Horsnell, Will Schreiber, Kye Dean, Luke Pedlar and Hagan Wright.

Two of them, Edwards and Baldwin, made the All-Aus-tralian under-16 team after standout national cham-pionship campaigns which saw the Croweaters win the title in Queensland.

Baldwin captained the State side.

Another three Tigers - Xavier Robins, Riley Holder and Hamish McRae - were selected in SA’s final 31-player squad but did not feature in the championships.

A white-hot Glenelg did not give the Redlegs a look in duringthegrandfinal.

By quarter-time the Bays were 19 points up, they extendedtheirleadto29atthehalfandatthefi-nal change the game was all but over following a,six goals to one third term that saw them career away to a 59-point lead.

Glenelg’sdominancewasreflectedinthescoringshots,with Hicks’ side boasting a 28-10 advantage.

Only Norwood’s straight shooting kept it within striking distance for so long as it kicked seven goals without a miss after quarter-time.

The Tigers had 22 more inside 50 entries and 48 more disposals than the Legs.

“Wewentintothefinalsserieswithamoresettledsidethan we had in the minor round and the boys went to the next level as a group,’’ said Hicks.

“They all played their roles and got the job done, which wasterrifictoseeonthebigstage.

“Norwood had been the dominant side throughout the minor round but we were able to control the ball around the contest and use it a lot better than them.

“It wasn’t a pretty game by any stretch of the imagina-tion but our contest work was great and it was a very dominant display by the boys.

“It was a good win against a good opposition.’’

Inthegrandfinal,Glenelghadwinnersacrosstheboard.

Key forwards Schreiber and Baldwin were dominant with three goals each and taking 20 marks between them.

Edwards - the middle sibling of Crows great and dual AFL premiership player Tyson Edwards - starred in the middle of the ground with 22 disposals and two goals, captain Dean had 23 possessions and also bagged two majors and Robins had the most possessions on the ground with 26.

“Our performance showed we’ve got plenty of young talent coming through the club which should stand us in good stead in the years ahead,’’ said Hicks.

Past Players & Officials

KEITH KUHLMANNChairman, Past Players & Officials Association

Firstly many thanks to Laurie Rosewarne (Great of Glenelg) for his skills, knowledge, work and leader-ship of the PPO group for many years. Fortunately he remains on the committee and continues to pas-sionately support the Bays in as many ways as he can. I feel very privileged and honoured to be asked to follow in his footsteps.

The role of the PPO is two-fold: 1 - To raise funds to contribute to the welfare and development of players and 2 - To maintain and promote contact amongst the PPO group of the GFC. To this end we are continually updating our database with latest details of current members and next we are looking at stream-lining how we add new PPOs to our group. We continue to hold a couple of home game func-tions and our Cash Lottery each year.

Drinks Van

In 2018 the PPO group accepted the challenge of running the drinks van on the scoreboard hill at home games. The acquisition of Responsible Serv-ing of Alcohol Certificates and stock management presented some issues but overall it was a very positive start. Thanks to the committee members for all chipping in and doing their bit. The South Aussie with Cosi night was a full-on warm up for the sea-son! As the season progressed more PPOs wandered over to say hello and have a drink and a catch up.A permanent structure is being planned in place of the caravan, hopefully in time for the 2019 season.

PPO Cash Lottery

Our $100 cash lottery was again hugely successful. Tony Symonds and Simon Angove again hosted the event and Terry McAuliffe was an exceptional guest speaker. Many old acquaintances were renewed or reinforced. Thanks to our sponsors for their support for all our functions – Reillys wines, Palmer Group and Michael Lunnis. Congratulations to “Twiggy”-Caldwell for winning the first prize ($2000) and to all the other prize winners. We continue to increase the number of “fixed”numbers where people retain

the same number from year to year, and have basical-ly sold out 3 years in a row. Due to the strength of the fixed number system, in 2019, we will no longer need to issue printed tickets.

Home Game Functions

Besides the Cash Lottery Day we held 2 functions in the Gym area. We hosted Norwood on April 14th and the Eagles on June 23rd. West Adelaide again invit-ed us to their home game on May 4th and many GFC PPOs attended and accepted their hospitality.

We appreciate the great work and support of Kristin Jeffery, Mitch Bremner and their staff for all our ac-tivities. The PPO group made approximately $15, 500 this year for the Club. Painting of the changerooms and acknowledging significant Past players in the de-cor is targeted for these funds. Watch out for details of a special function for Past Players and Current Players to launch the 2019 season.

Many thanks to our growing committee. ”Many hands make light work”could be our motto. Members of the committee are Tony Symonds, Geoff Tanner, Colin Scripps, Allan Bartlett, Rex Voigt, Laurie Rosewarne, Torrie Osborn, Simon Angove, Nick Chigwidden, Luke Pannozzo and Keith Kuhlmann.

Any past League, Reserves or Junior players, officials or volunteers are welcome to join the biggest and best Past Players and Officials group in the SANFL. Please contact the club or any committee member and we will add you to our growing database. We are looking forward with enthusiasm to 2019 – Seeing more of our PPO friends/colleagues and hopefully finals action for our League side.

MERIT AWARDS

Peter Cornwall has had a long time involvment with the Glenelg Football Club starting back in 1994. In that time Peter has been a huge part of writing our club’s history from the ‘Pride of the Bay’ book, the ‘wall of fame’ featuring every Glenelg league player and the picket plaques around the oval. Peter has also been on the Hall of Fame se-lection panel and is currently the Chairman of the club’s history committee. Peter is a passionate and selfess vol-unteer of the GFC and we are extremely grateful for the hours of work he puts in to make the club a better place.

Life Member Inductions

/ BRIAN ROBINSON

Brian has been a respected and valued volunteer at the Club for 25 years. He has held the roles of Runner, Statistician, Property Steward and Team Manager. Life Membership is just recognition for so many years of uncon-ditional support for the Club.

/ WARWICK LUMBERS (POSTHUMOUS)

The Club is indebted to Warwick Lumbers for his outstanding contribution. It actually began as a an Under 17 Player and later continued in overseeing an iconic sponsorship within the SANFL through Gliderol. That sponsor-ship continues into 2019 through the Gliderol brand name proudly dis-played on our guernsey sash.

We trust that Warwick’s family is proud of his contribution to sport in South Australia.

“LOYAL TIGERS HONOURED”

BY PETER CORNWALL

Glenelg Football Club’s Hall of Fame has swelled to 47 members after two versatile and powerful former stars were inducted at the Bay in June.

Their league careers were separated by a quar-ter-of-a-century but there were plenty of simi-larities between great clubmen Kevin Abley and Allan Bartlett, who were proud and emotional as they accepted their honour at the sold-out clu-brooms.

Abley was outstanding at either end of the ground in an 11-year career, winning the club’s leading goalkicker award in 1957 (with 41) but mostly be-ing remembered as a top-shelf, miserly full back. And Bartlett was a hard-working player who adapted to stints in the key attacking and de-fensive positions over his 11 years of league footy at the Bay. Both played one State game. But, de-spite their selfless, team-oriented football and loyalty to and passion for Glenelg, neither played in a league premiership. Abley, though, in 1967 coached the reserves to the flag - the club’s first senior premiership since 1934.

Abley played 174 games and kicked 96 goals be-tween 1954-64, while former Crow Bartlett played 201 games and kicked 92 goals between 1989-99. In Abley’s era of the 1950s and ‘60s, versatil-ity wasn’t common but he played in every position apart from the wing and rover. If a Glenelg coach had a position that needed filling, Kevin would fill it. And he had seven coaches in his 11 years at the

club! Kevin’s brother John has always been high-ly rated - as you would expect, considering he played in seven Port Adelaide premierships and was selected in three All-Australian teams. But over the three seasons Kevin played at full back he conceded less goals per game on average than John. And as a full forward Kevin played on his brother - and bagged five goals in one game on him.

In many ways Bartlett was a modern-day Kev-in Abley. He also would go wherever the coach would send him - often to a key position on a tall and dangerous opponent - and give everything he had. Like Abley, he was physical and his opponent had to earn every kick.

“It’s a fantastic honour to be inducted but it’s only for doing something you’ve loved over the years,” Bartlett said.

“I have been involved here since under-10s right through all the squads and you wouldn’t change that for anything. We didn’t have the ultimate success but a footy club is about the people - I have made some great friends over the years and I really look forward to kicking on with them.”

Abley also paid tribute to the many friends he had made as he gave “probably 20 of the best years of my life” to the Tigers, highlighting players, train-ers, club officials and vice-presidents.

“I’m very, very proud. When Laurie (long-time friend, former Tiger great and Hall of Fame selection committee member Laurie Rosewarne) rang to tell me I was a bit emotional.”

“A WHOLE NEW WORLD”

Peter Cornwall takes you on a tour of state-of-the-art ACH Group Stadium

No wonder some club insiders have dubbed the cyclon-ic winds of December 2016 the “Perfect Storm”. Initially thought to have wreaked havoc.

“I was pretty well gutted. I thought where do we go from here?” Elliott recalled - there has been an unparalleled transformation since that wild night and the Tigers now train and prepare in amenities the envy of most state league clubs.

“It’s essential to give your players the right equipment to do their job,” Elliott says of the ground’s makeover.

“If we put someone on the staff we would give them a de-cent computer and a decent office but what we were doing with our players was giving them substandard conditions which hadn’t changed for however long.” (The HY Sparks Stand, named after the founder of Glenelg Oval, was de-molished 80 years after it was built, so it wasn’t exactly state of the art).

“For a club to be strong on the field, ideally it comes down to three pillars - best coaches, best list, best facilities - and if you can’t tick off those, success is unlikely.

“I would say best facilities gets a tick, best coaching gets a tick and now we will see how the players perform … I don’t see an obstacle in front of us, whereas previously you could.”

Elliott admits the horribly out-of-date rooms under the old Sparks Stand - particularly when showing around would-be recruits - were an embarrassment compared to other clubs.

“That will probably offend some of the past greats of Glenelg but that’s all they knew at the time.” Elliott said.

“We’ve gone from last (in the SANFL for player facilities) into the upper-echelon. I’m not going to say we’re the best but we’re certainly in the upper echelon.

“The Club must provide first class faclilties to enable all players to maximise their performances. They are going to be well coached, they are going to have a great gym, sen-sational oval, great changerooms and we’ve got Thebarton Oval for pre-season.”

There’s suddenly a spring in everyone’s step at the Bay.

Glenelg Chief Executive Glenn Elliott says whenever he walks into the newly-upgraded players’ gym overlooking the stunning playing arena it’s with a smile on his face, while skipper Andrew Bradley says it “lifts your mood and it makes you more excited to be here”.

Just three years after Glenelg had announced its doors might have to be closed as it faced $3m debts and only two-and-a-bit years since the roof was ripped from its historic grandstand in a freak storm it’s a whole new world for the Tigers.

Six consecutive wins to finish the 2018 season, a high-qual-ity coach whose message clearly is getting through to a talented line-up that has been boosted by strong and se-lective recruiting over the summer and facilities that have been transformed from possibly the worst in the SANFL to the upper-echelons of the league have long-suffering mem-bers and fans anticipating a bright long-term future - much sooner than anyone could have hoped for.

Glenelg’s iconic oval even has a new name - ACH Group Sta-dium. The Bays’ partnership with ACH Group has seen the establishment of Health Studio 50+, ACH Group’s state-of-the-art health and wellbeing hub at the ground - and that also equates to a decent-sized boost to the club’s bottom line. Located in the old function centre, it’s far from the only breath of fresh air at the Bay. The Tigers’ changerooms - and the opposition’s - the players’ gymnasium, meeting room and medical facilities are now top-shelf.

“We don’t expect more of the players now … we are just re-ally pleased from their perspective that we have given them the tools of the trade so they can be the very best they can be.”

Bradley says: “It makes you strive to a higher standard when you see what is in place around you - it definitely helps.”

But will it help him be better prepared?

“Yes and no,” he said.

“I think preparation comes down to each individual and if you want to prepare properly you will do it whether it is in the shed at home, or whether it is here. The facilities defi-nitely help but it always comes down to the individual want-ing to get better and prepare the way they should.”

That, of course, is the sort of attitude that has turned Brad-ley into a leader. Now he’s primed to assist the Bays back into the finals.

The gym, apart from the stunning fresh paint-job with black walls featuring Glenelg logos, has been refitted with up-to-date new equipment after a deal was struck with Fitness Warehouse.

“It’s fantastic,” said Bradley.

“Having the open glass and being able to look out onto the oval compared to the old gym … the equipment we had in the old gym was okay but just being the four walls and being enclosed wasn’t quite the same … it was a bit gloomy. It’s awesome now, all new equipment and good flooring - it’s a really good place to be.”

Bradley is rapt in the gear.

“When I came to the club we had a bench that had been there for probably 20 years and was wearing down and we had the same one moved up when the function room got cleared out and the gym was put in there,” he said.

“Now you don’t feel like you’re breathing in 20 years worth of dust. It looks so much more professional.”

PHOTO: Graham Cornes makes himself at home at the new Cornes Gates at the Bay.

The outdated facilities under the old grandstand - that An-drew’s father David used as a changeroom and gym when he dashed down the wing at the Bay in the 1970s - are quick-ly becoming a distant memory. Elliott, who coached West Torrens at the ground in the ’80s before becoming Tigers General Manager for the first time in the ’90s, now can look back with a laugh.

“I coached down here and that visiting changeroom did not change from when I first came to South Australia ... in fact I think it got smaller,” Elliott said.

“Our club doctor at Torrens often recalled about coming to Glenelg that he’d have one foot in the urinal as he was try-ing to stitch a player up. That was our reputation out there.”

Elliott knows of people slipping down the concrete stairs and in the race that led the players from the old stand onto the oval.

“When it was a wet day here, it was covered with water.”

When you walk into the ground one of the first things you notice is the gates you’re passing through. The Cornes Gates. They’re all class, so much so Glenelg District Cricket Club put up their own in the same striking style at their entrance - the Chappell Gates. Wow, how are they for a couple of great Glenelg sporting families?

A quick turn to the left and a couple of years ago you would have walked into the Sparks Stand. Now there’s a viewing area that is the Bays’ rival for Norwood’s Coo-pers Hill. The outer shell of the Sparks Stand remains, retaining the historical integrity of the oldest remains of the ground - complete with plaques from the first pavilion from 1921 and the rebuilt stand from 1937 - with a built-up grassed area that last season proved hugely popular. Elliott reckons “more people use this than ever used the stand”.

And Bradley says “it feels like you are a bit closer to peo-ple on the hill there - in the grandstand they were proba-bly another 20 metres away. It feels like you are getting a bit more interaction with the crowd.”

And new coloured sails this winter provide some shelter and add to the outstanding look of the ground.

If you walk into the club through the front doors, you’re taking a step back in time in the Ray Curnow Foyer - named named after a great of Glenelg who between 1929 and 1973 was player, coach committeeman and secretary. Not surprisingly, on the wall to your right, his picture hangs among the Greats of Glenelg - the 17 people who have had the biggest impact on the club’s history.

Straight ahead is the Wall of Fame - every Glenelg league footballer there’s been since the Tigers’ first year of league footy in 1921. Andrew Bradley is player No. 984. We’re up to player No. 1106 now, so that means he’s been around for a while, about to enter his ninth year of league footy. Andrew’s father David, who played 65 games for Glenelg from 1977-81, is No. 626. And his Uncle Phillip Bradley is player No. 635.

Andrew admits that’s “really cool”. And he says it’s a nice feeling for new players to get their names up there in lights with the greats of the club.

“You can see people coming through, looking at the differ-ent names and, as a player, you walk in and have a glance at it and it makes you feel you’re a part of something big-ger.”

The Wall of Fame for the Tigers’ SANFLW side also is go-ing up in the foyer and a photo of the women’s side is ac-companying the men’s team.

It’s a club for one and all - Glenelg was one of the four original women’s teams in the SANFL two years back - and when you head around the corner, past the 47 Glenelg legends who make up the Hall of Fame, there’s usually plenty of women enjoying the dining area.

“We’re really proud of this area,” Elliott says.

“Our lunch trade has a really high proportion of female groups, smaller and larger, which says two things - one, your food (and your service) must be good and, important-ly, it is a safe venue.

“The bistro is producing between 1000 and 1100 meals a week - that’s more than 50,000 last year. Our average price is $20, so there’s a million dollars-plus.”

Outside the dining room is an alfresco area from which you can watch the footy.

“Now people actually book benches here,” Elliott says

The former kids’ area has been converted into a room that is booked for workshops, conferences and private group dining. That leads through to the new history committee room. Elliott, Peter Carey, Nick Chigwidden and co, while recognising the club’s proud history - there is a cente-nary approaching - have their sights set on future suc-cesses. For those to become reality, the club must create strong income streams.

“Some people think Glenelg Football Club offers hospi-

tality facilities ... no, we are running a hospitality venue so we can play football. There’s a difference,” says Elliott, adding “we’re taking pokies seriously now”.

Walking through to the gaming area, Elliott says “it’s just got a better feel about the place”.

It has a fresh look, newly-painted with less intrusive lighting and there a six striking new machines.

“Some people are uncomfortable with gaming but it is a cold hard fact of life that the best-performing clubs in the SANFL have massive gaming income. We don’t.”

Having again been in the lower echelon of SANFL clubs, Glenelg again is heading in the right direction.

“Since November, we have had a 20-odd per cent in-crease, which is actually in an industry that has declined a little bit,” said Elliott.

“We need to make this room successful and we are pro-gressing … through joining the Jackpot Club, we’re get-ting patrons from other venues throughout the precinct. We are competitive with these venues now - not the equal of them but we are at least competitive.”

It’s all about professionalism. On the field and off. And high performance manager James Wiseman reckons that’s what the new gym is all about.

“It looks a lot more professional, so guys want to be in here … and when they are in here they are getting good quality out of what they are doing,” he said.

Now it’s down to the Tigers’ changerooms behind Snout’s Hill in the south-western pocket.

“I reckon this is as good as anything there is for the play-ers,” says Elliott.

Bradley said: “There’s a lot more space and a better meet-ing room - the old meeting room we had was quite stuffy and cramped. We’ve got a projector there and we can watch video footage.”

“It’s a fair step up. Everything is brand new - new ice baths and showers and a lot more modern feel.”

If you think it’s all happened in the blink of an eye, you’re not the only one.

Bradley still shakes his head when he recalls how quick-ly the Tigers’ new changerooms grew where the function centre car park had been before the 2017 season.

“When I first walked in and saw the development at the new changerooms I thought, ‘gee, we’re playing in six weeks time, I don’t think it’s going to be ready’.”

Former Glenelg goalkicking great Fred Phillis further im-pacted the club’s history by designing the rooms and,

as Bradley recalls, “True enough, you go in there for our first home match and it’s all all up to scratch.” Two-and-a-half hours later, Bradley remembers how “awesome” it was belting out We’re from Tigerland with team-mates, the smell of fresh paint in their nostrils, having beatenthe deadliest of foes Port Adelaide.

Port had been in new changerooms of their own. The Bays had been converting the old St John Ambulance and Chil-dren and Family Health building behind the scoreboard for women’s footy. Visiting SANFL teams now use the rooms and “we would rate with the very best,” says Elliott,

“and that’s the opinion of visiting teams - they’ve told me that.”

And it’s about to get better for Glenelg’s women footbal-lers. Work is starting upstairs next to the gym - replacing the function centre kitchen - showers being built that are attached to the current female toilets, with locker room, player meeting room and facilities for trainers, doctors and physios. The women’s change amenities also will be accessible to female ACH Group patrons.

Glenelg financial members will benefit from two person-al trainers who will work in the gym and be available to them. It’s about working with your local community. And if you don’t reckon the footy club is a major player in the Glenelg area, think again.

Elliott tries to tackle what the footy club’s economic worth may be to the broader community.

“We have just on 40 employees, a massive payroll … in terms of goods, wages and the multiplier effect it’s prob-ably worth over $20m annually,” Elliott said.

And how many people will be walking through the Cornes Gates or Brian Curnow Foyer this year?

“There would be some duplication but there’s 1000-odd people dining here every week - that’s 50,000 to start with. ACH Group has 400 patrons per week, there’s an-other 20,000, so you’re up to 70,000. If you add 25 or 30 for footy and training nights, then there’s the pokies, it’s probably between 100 and 150,000.”

The Save the Tiger campaign almost three years ago has helped the club learn to stand on its own two feet. So, is the Tiger safe?

“Yeah, I reckon it’s pretty safe,” says Elliott.

Maybe it’s even better than that. Bradley feels there are exciting times ahead.

“It’s the most optimistic I have been in the past six or seven years. Everyone is pretty upbeat and excited to get going.”

No wonder there’s a spring in everyone’s step.

8. Special Item of Business: Glenelg Football Club ConstitutionN Chigwidden advised the meeting that the Club had retained Andersons Solicitors – Garry Palasis to oversee the process. G Palasis informed the meeting that the process involved modernising the former Constitution with two key changes:Board Structure: Board would now comprise 4 Directors elected by the members at the AGM and up to 4 Appointed Directors. The Appointed Directors were Board appointments for a 1 -year term. In effect Board numbers dropped from 10 to 8.The Vice Presidents Group would not continue in 2018 and as such not have a direct Board nomination going forwardElection Voting: The proposed Constitution made it easier to vote by introducing electronic voting.

Discussion

Vice Presidents Group:Disappointment was raised relevant to the Group not continuing having been an integral part of the Club for so long. The matter had already been explained during the President’s address and at previous meetings with the Group’s members. The point was made that in the interests of the demographic process, any group with such limited numbers should not expect to nominate a member of that group direct to the Board.Comments indicated that the Vice Presidents Group was in fact dying but disappointment was expressed for the lack of communication on the matter.

It was explained that the initiative of a new coterie group in 2018, the Captain’s Club, was independent of any discussion regards the Constitution despite extended attempts to do so.

The Chairman then put the following motion to the Meeting:

Motion‘In respect of the proposal to alter the Constitution set out in the documents presented to the Annual General Meeting it is resolved to amend the Constitution in accordance with the amended Constitution tabled at the Meeting’.

Moved: J KavanaghSeconded: G Edwards

Two voting counts were conducted without resolution. Josh Carter, Auditor – BDO, was then asked to conduct same with the following result.

Voting 56 members present- 37 for- 5 against- 14 abstaining

- Requested that the Tiger branding be placed on the Club building itself- Membership should be advertised on the rotating LED signs facing Brighton Road- Match Day Format in 2018 The former Sparks stand will be an open facility with grassed mounds Presidents Room will host pre-match functions Bistro services will be maintained Oval catering is under review- Board member attendance on Members Night at the Glenelg Club: Tim Kelly It would be beneficial for the Board to consider an attendance roster- Sponsorship and website Tim Kelly advised that spelling errors were noted on the Club’s web site and needed attention. All available sponsorship inven- tory was raised as area requiring attention, especially that of the Captains’ Club. Sponsorship comes to the Club in many forms, some by reference, some by direct approach, some by Club initiative. Whilst it would be much easier if sponsors simply ap- proached the Club, that scenario is highly unlikely. All potential sponsors had or will be followed up with any assistance appreci- ated- Congratulations were extended to Mel Churchett for her efforts with both the website and Annual Report- N Chigwidden noted that the Club was always open to suggestions and would follow up the matters raised
