Endowment Fund The Newington College Endowment Fund has been specifically established for boys with promise and proven socio-economic need. Providing a Newington education to these deserving boys is aligned to our theme of empowering young men to ‘Discover what’s possible’ and is central to our community values of diversity and inclusiveness, as well as to our social justice program.

The Mulford BursaryEstablished and fully funded in 2018, the Mulford Bursary is a tribute to retired Headmaster, Dr David Mulford who served as Newington’s 18th Headmaster from 2009 to 2018.

Chris Wild (ON 1991) Indigenous BursaryThe Chris Wild (ON 1991) Indigenous Bursary is the most significant of the named Bursaries in our Endowment Fund. When fully funded, this bursary will annually award a fee free, six-year Newington education to a worthy and deserving Indigenous boy. We currently have three Indigenous boys on Ambassador funded bursaries and one in Wyvern to commence Year 7 in 2020.

Philip Davis OAM Mathematics Bursary The late Phillip Davis OAM established a Bursary in 2014 for a Year 7 boy of promise in Mathematics to have the opportunity of a Newington College education. We currently have two boys on two-year Ambassador funded bursaries, whilst the corpus continues to build.

Building FundGifts to the Building Fund enhance education by enabling the construction of purpose-built facilities that help us provide opportunities for Newington Boys to ‘Discover what’s possible’.

Founders SocietyThe Founders Society is the College’s Bequest Program and recognises, honours and cherishes those who have remembered the College in their Will.

6 | ENDOWMENT FUND | 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

From the College Council Chairman

This is the second Annual Report for the Newington Foundation and 2018 was the third year of operation of the College’s Endowment Fund. Whilst the Foundation is more than just the Endowment Fund, our goal of providing 100 fully funded, means-tested bursaries that can be maintained in perpetuity for boys from families with proven socio-economic need will continue to be the focus of the Foundation’s activities for the foreseeable future.

Over the past three years, we have made a great start with both the Newington community and the College Council contributing to building the corpus of the Endowment Fund. Over the three years to 2018 the number of Old Boy donors has grown by 30% and our parent donors have grown by 29% over the same period.

Yes, a great start but we really need to bring this home. The bulk of future fundraising for the Endowment Fund should now fall to the Newington community

to support. It is only with your ongoing and generous support can we hope to make a Newington education available to those 100 deserving boys. The impact of your generosity is that we can, forever, educate generations of these boys and really change the world.

All our donors during 2018 are listed later in this Report and I thank every one of you for your support this year. Additionally, I thank those members of the Founders Society, our Bequest program, for your legacy gifts in perpetuity. Most are yet to be realised, but all are a statement of generous support of our Boys.

Our individual capacity to give may vary but it is our participation and involvement that really matters. That is what makes the difference.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT | ENDOWMENT FUND | 7

From the Foundation Chairman

2018 has been another year of great success for the Newington Foundation.

Thanks to the ongoing generosity of our donors and an investment strategy that has delivered solid returns despite financial headwinds in the final quarter, we remain very much on course to achieve our vision of 100 full fee bursaries by 2040. That’s 100 faces at Newington, year in, year out and that means thousands of opportunities fulfilled during our children’s lifetime.

In this Report, you will read that we launched and fully funded the Mulford Bursary, a marvellous tribute to the College’s 18th Headmaster and saw some extraordinary support for the Wild Indigenous Bursary with over $1.2 million raised. I thank all the Newington community for this generous support during the year.

That’s what the Endowment Fund and the Foundation is all about – your opportunity to join the College community, to contribute and enhance the life

of all in that community and eventually, to benefit the whole of our society. Think about that. Thousands of people touched by opportunity, enriched by the Newington experience and contributing to our broader society.

We are on track, but the road is long, so there is no time for pause. As more and more people buy into the vision, they too can be part of what I think of as the Newington Way. I would ask you all to tell others about our vision and encourage those around you to join in.

Endowment FundCommunity and Development

The College’s Endowment Fund commenced in 2016 and in only three years has reached 17% of its fundraising goal that will provide 100 fully funded, means-tested bursaries that can be maintained in perpetuity for boys from families with proven socio-economic need. We are aiming to reach our goal by 2040 but the earlier we do this, the earlier the impact will be.

As mentioned by both the Council and Foundation Chairmen in their respective reports, the Endowment Fund and the achievement of this goal, will be the primary focus of the Newington Foundation for the foreseeable future.

Fundraising is and will continue to be, a combination of:

• annual cash donations from our generous donors who support the boys’ future every year in this way;

• long-term bequest pledges from our generous Founders Society members and others who have included a legacyto Newington in their Will; and

• the earnings from prudent investment of these funds.

Every member of the Newington community is encouraged to support the Endowment Fund in their own way. As the Council Chairman has stated, our individual capacity to give may vary but it is our participation and involvement that really matters. That is what makes the difference.

As a donor or member of the Founders Society, thank you for your generous support during 2018 and we hope you will encourage others to join you in the positive impact you are having on those with much to offer but without the means.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT | ENDOWMENT FUND | 9

The Mulford Bursary Dr David Mulford retired as Headmaster in December 2018 after leading the College for 10 of its most successful years. As a driving force behind the renewal of the College, he leaves magnificent legacies – physical, educational and pastoral – that will serve the sons of Newington for many generations.

Dr Mulford wanted to be remembered most for his legacy of ‘diversity’. He generously allowed his name to be applied to the College’s latest Endowment Fund Bursary – The Mulford Bursary.

The Mulford Bursary is one of the 100 bursaries of the College’s Endowment Fund which offers the chance of a Newington education to boys of promise who otherwise would not have such opportunity.

These ‘boys of promise’ will be identified, selected and, through the Newington community’s generous support, educated to become men of substance and resilience. As recipients of the Mulford Bursary, they will be educated in the name of a great educator and leader who changed the face of Newington College.

The Mulford Bursary Appeal was launched in May 2018 and by 30 June, the first $100,000 had been raised. The Stanmore P&F hosted their biennial Newington Ball in September with all proceeds going to the Mulford Bursary Appeal. Prior to the Ball, to encourage community support, an anonymous Old Boy pledged $250,000 if the College Council would match the funding, to which the Council agreed.

This generous benefaction was announced on the night and saw over $100,000 raised. Other major donors included the ONU contributing $20,000, also matched on the night by the College Council and two other parent donations of $10,000 each. The night was a wonderful tribute to David and Judy Mulford and confirmed the esteem in which they both were held.

At the 2018 Prize Giving, the Council Chairman announced that, with the success of the fundraising to date, that the Mulford Bursary would commence in 2019. Applications have been received and the first Mulford Bursary boy will commence in 2020.

Chris Wild (ON 1991) Indigenous Bursary Program

The Chris Wild (ON 1991) Indigenous Bursary achieved another first in 2018 with the scale of its donor matching program undertaken during the year. Never had such generous matching funding been pledged in the past, with the Wild Bursary Fund Board members joining the College Council and others in committing financial support by securing pledged funds of $800,000.

The matching program was a 2 for 1 contribution, in that the $800,000 pledged would be donated if the Newington community supported the Wild Bursary’s Indigenous program with $400,000 of donations. This, in effect, tripled every dollar donated by the Newington community to this appeal.

When established in late November 2017, the appeal program had only seven months to raise the $400,000 by 30 June 2018. The momentum started with a pre-Christmas appeal, with the pace picking up as the financial year end approached. With the generous support of the Newington community, what a magnificent June it was, with over $420,000 raised and the full $800,000+ being honoured in full.

A total of $1,248,712 in cash and pledges brought the Wild Indigenous Bursary program halfway to its $5 million goal. An ambitious goal but when achieved, one which will see this bursary financially self-sufficient and guaranteeing the opportunity of a Newington education to an Indigenous boy every year, forever. With the Newington community’s ongoing goodwill and support, along with that of current and new Ambassadors, we are closer to awarding a Wild Bursary every year from 2020.

Inaugural recipient Gage Phillips (Year 12) started his final year of study in October 2018. Gage has a positive outlook towards his final year and says he is keen to make the most of the opportunities that he has been given. In the sporting arena, Gage had a good year, particularly in rugby, which is his passion. In basketball his coach reported that his effort and attitude were excellent, and, in both sports, he was commended for his sportsmanship. His art skills also continue to flourish.

Chris Wild’s father, Rob ‘Oscar’ Wild (ON 1965) was recognised as the 2018 Newington Medallist at the 2018 Prize Giving. Pictured right is Council Chairman Tony McDonald congratulating Rob on his award.

Rob had been battling cancer for some time and the Newington community was very saddened to learn of Rob’s passing in March 2019.

Rob’s commitment to the College had been steadfast throughout his life both as an active Old Boy and through his membership of the Founders Society. He and his wife Jenny also lent support to families through the mentoring programme Compassionate Friends NSW and, over recent years, provided support for Newington families who have lost a child.

Rob Wild was a man of extraordinary character and faith and he will be missed. Both his and son Chris’ legacy lives on through the Chris Wild (ON 1991) Indigenous Bursary and the College’s Indigenous program generally.

Philip Davis OAM Mathematics Bursary

Community and Development

The late Phillip Davis OAM established a Bursary in 2014 for a Year 7 boy of promise in Mathematics to have the opportunity of a Newington College education. Whilst the corpus builds, an anonymous Old Boy Ambassador is generously funding 6 boys on two year bursaries for Years 11 and 12.

The second Philip Davis OAM Mathematics Bursary recipient Kenny Chen, pictured right, completed his schooling in 2018. With an impressive finish to his education at Newington, Kenny received Top IB marks at Newington in Latin SL, Philosophy HL, Chemistry HL, Physics SL and Mathematics HL with an IB Diploma score 44, equating to an ATAR of 99.85. At the 2018 Prize Giving, Kenny received the John F Lincoln Prize for Dux (IB Programme).

Jonathan Lee (Yr 11) the third Philip Davis OAM Mathematics Bursary recipient, was awarded Proxime Accessit in the Year 11 IB programme at the 2018 Annual Prize Giving.

Richard Zhang (ON 2017) and pictured right with the Headmaster Dr David Mulford, the inaugural recipient and Patron of the Philip Davis OAM Mathematics

Bursary, was the largest donor to this bursary during 2018. After his success as a bursary student Richard continues to give back so others may receive the same opportunities as he did.

Other Benefactor Endowed Bursaries F. Stretton Jeffs (ON 1933) BursaryA successful first year for Tumoana Poata, the inaugural F. Stretton Jeffs (ON 1933) Bursary holder. Tumoana completed his Year 11 studies with very impressive results and was a positive influence in the boarding house. Tumoana is pictured left with his parents Evan and Catherine and bursary benefactor Rohan Jeffs (ON 1965).

Jim Millner (ON 1937) Bursary Established in 2013 through a generous gift by Mrs Jean Millner in memory of her late husband Jim (ON 1937), the inaugural recipient Simi Afeaki graduated in 2018. Sadly, Jean passed away in October 2016 and in her memory, the family donated additional funds to provide a full fee, six-year bursary forever.

Moffitt Family Bursary First awarded in 2017, the Moffitt Family Bursary is a full fee, six-year bursary. Inaugural recipient Louis Ryan completed Year 8 in 2018 and is pictured right, with his mother Ms Frances Notman, at the 2018 Donors Thank You function.

Eileen M Johnson Rural Boarding Bursary Funded during his lifetime by the late David Johnson (ON 1950) in memory of his mother Eileen, this bursary provides full tuition fees for a country student entering the College as a boarder. The bursary first commenced in 2001 and some 10 boys to date have benefitted from David Johnson’s legacy to the College. There was no recipient of this bursary in 2018.

Community and Development

Robert Walter Storr Music Bursary Funded by a bequest from Robert Walter ‘Bob’ Storr (ON 1938), this bursary provides up to 3 years full fee and boarding for a boy of musical talent and promise from either Indonesia, Malaysia or Singapore. Current recipient Rohen Wong, a cellist from Malaysia graduated the IB with Top IB mark in the Extended Essay and Top IB mark in Mandarin and with a mark of 41/45 which is equivalent to an ATAR of 98.80. Rohen was also awarded Dux of Edmund Webb Boarding House for the year 12 Boarder who received the highest ATAR or equivalent.

We recently asked Rohen, pictured right, to reflect on his time at Newington and where he sees his career path taking him…

Where does the result see you in 2019? What are your career plans for the future?

I am very fortunate to have received such a result, which has allowed me to gain entry to the University of Sydney, where I will be studying Data Science and Psychology.

My career plan is to become a Data Scientist with qualifications also in Clinical Psychology.

How do you reflect on your time at Newington?

When I reflect on my time at Newington, I feel (undoubtedly like many others), that it was far too brief. Walking out the exam hall after my last paper, I vividly remember harbouring a nonsensical wish that it wasn’t actually the last paper- and that I was actually, still in Year 11. My reluctance to leave was built on the certainty that if I could just stay at Newington a while longer, it would continue to teach me many more things.

My time at Newington has expanded and enriched my world view. Thus, I know I shall have the fondest memories of Newington.

As a Newington College bursary recipient, what message do you have for others about the importance of supporting the Endowment Fund and its individual bursaries?

Without the help of the bursary I could never have had such a well-rounded education as my parents would not have been able to support my higher school education overseas in addition to my tertiary education. I am grateful for the gift and in turn, feel compelled to contribute back to society when I have the chance.

The bursaries also enable people of vastly different backgrounds to interact and learn from each other in the school community. A bursary also perpetuates more success: each recipient contributes his talent to the College, while learning lifelong values and friendships. Like me, once they become Old Boys, they will strive to contribute to the best of their capabilities, back to the place which had so graciously taken them in and given them an excellent foundation for their future.

Founders Society The Founders Society is the College’s Bequest program and all members of the Newington community are encouraged to become members of the Founders Society by including a bequest to Newington in their Will.

The 2018 Founders Society Day Lunch was held on 18 May and we welcomed three new members: Mr Mark Dickens (ON 1985 and Head of Sport), Mr Tony King (ON 1982 and College Council) and Mr Stuart Mosely (ON 1960).

Sadly, we lost two members during the year, Mr Brian Bown (ON 1948) and Mr Doug Quane (ON 1959). Both members left substantial legacies to the College which were directed to the Phillip Davis OAM Mathematics Bursary.

Membership of the Founders Society currently stands at 108.

ONU Centennial TrustThe ONU Centennial Trust recognises and financially rewards Old Newingtonians who have excelled in their chosen field and who contribute in a meaningful way to the community. The Trust awards $10,000 – $20,000 in any one year to up to four recipients so they may undertake study or research. To be eligible, applicants must have completed at least one year of Senior School at Newington. There is no age restriction although preference is given to applicants under 40 years of age.

The 2018 ONU Centennial Trust recipient was Matthew Han (ON 2014), who, upon leaving Newington in 2014, was accepted at the University of Cambridge to study Human, Social and Political Sciences. Matthew achieved a triple First and is one of the few students to achieve a First in every year of study at Cambridge. He is now attending the London School of Economics to study for a MSc in Public Policy, which the Trust grant will aid him in completing.

Once he completes his Master’s, Matthew hopes to return to Australia to begin work in the Office of Prime Minister and Cabinet, or the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, as part of their graduate scheme. The ONU Centennial Trust Panel viewed Matthew as an outstanding candidate for the 2018 award.

Ways to Give There are many ways to support the Newington College Foundation

Endowment Fund To fund 100 means tested bursaries for boys of promise and proven socio-economic need. To provide a Newington education to deserving boys to empower them to “Discover what’s possible” which is central to our Community values of diversity and inclusiveness.

Phillip Davis OAM Mathematics Bursary Six year bursary awarded to a boy of promise in Mathematics. Seed funded by the late Phillip Davis OAM and now needing the support of the Newington community to come to fruition.

Family Funded Bursaries A family named bursary with specified criteria and funded by a Newington family or Old Boy in his family’s name.

Building Fund Gifts enable the construction and maintenance of purpose built facilities to provide every opportunity for Newington Boys to “Discover what’s possible”

Library Fund All donations are used to resource the Library and our Archives Program.

Bequests Including Newington in your will provides a legacy that will endure for generations. Please contact the Office of Community and Development if you are interested in more information about the Founders Society and the College’s Bequest Program.
