CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS: 17th August (FOR
EXCHANGE IN SEM 1 OR 2 OF THE FOLLOWING YEAR)
Introduction: Rodent’s Abroad
General Information Regarding the Student Exchange Programmes Rhodes offers a number of exciting student exchange programmes. All applications for these exchange
programmes will be screened by a selection committee and final acceptance is conditional upon the
host institutions selection and Rhodes Faculty approval.
What is an exchange programme? Rhodes students participating in an exchange programme will attend an overseas institution for an
academic semester. As some of the semester dates differ abroad, students will be exempt from
attending Rhodes for the full equivalent semester, i.e. February to June or July to November, and may
make use of the different time frames to travel while abroad.
Rhodes students will have exchange student status at the host institutions and may take courses for
transfer credit at Rhodes University, but will not be eligible for a degree from the host institution.
Rhodes students will continue as candidates for their degrees at Rhodes.
Choosing a Destination: Two things should determine your choice of destination:
1. Course content and credits – during an exchange programme, you must attain credits for
subjects that you are taking at Rhodes. It is imperative that you take courses abroad that are
approved by the relevant Heads of Department at Rhodes. Some destinations are only viable
for students taking certain subjects (e.g. Commerce Students) and some degrees (LLB) and
subjects (Law) have strict limitations on where you go. Be sure to consult with your Head(s)
of Department when deciding where to go. In certain cases, the International Office will advise
you against going on exchange if it will negatively impact on your study path.
2. Financial implications – all exchange programmes cost extra, but some cost more than others.
Be sure that you know what expenses you will be expected to cover when going on exchange.
If you are uncertain, visit the Universities’ websites and talk to the International officer at
Rhodes.
Applying for an exchange: Please note that the relevant information regarding courses on offer, as well as general information
about the institutions, is available from each institution's website. It is the student's responsibility to
review this information before applying for the exchange programme to ensure that there are suitable
courses available.
Students are invited to apply and must submit their application form along with their curriculum vitae,
a personal motivation letter, an up-to-date course record and two academic references to the
International Office at Rhodes University by the deadline specified on the front page of this booklet.
The Selection Committee then meets to shortlist students. Students on the shortlist are invited to be
interviewed by the Selection Committee; thereafter final selection is made by Rhodes. The successful
students will then apply to the various host institutions via the Rhodes International Office. Please
note that academic acceptance by the host institution is not automatic.
Before embarking on an exchange, Rhodes students must have obtained approval from the
appropriate Head of Department and the Dean of the Faculty at Rhodes for the inclusion of the
proposed transfer credit from the host institution in their Rhodes University degree structure. The
onus is on you, the student, to ensure that the HOD has approved the courses. This approval must
be facilitated through the International Office. Rhodes students are required to spend one semester
at the host institution.
APPLICATION FORMS CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM OUR INTERNATIONAL
OFFICE WEBSITE: http://www.ru.ac.za/internationalisation/. Please submit your application form to the International
Office along with all the supporting documentation.
Financial Implications Students participating in exchange programmes usually spend in the region of R35 000, including
travel costs, but excluding tuition and accommodation expenses. However, please note that some of
the programmes have already made provision for financial assistance and the International Office is
able to assist in some cases. Please be aware that payment of all fees is due by the dates indicated in
the Rhodes Fees Booklet sent out to you at the beginning of each year.
Financial Support Some partner universities in countries such as the UK, Germany and the USA have access to funding
assistance for students going on exchange. Please note that it is very rare that students will get all
expenses covered.
Enquiries Please feel free to come and speak to us at the International Office between 14h00-16h00 on Monday
to Friday. Tel: 046 603 8225 or email [email protected].
