MANITOBA

Winnipeg is the provincial capital of Manitoba, a province of over 1,500,000 people that stretches

from the Arctic Ocean to the U.S. border. Manitoba is categorized as a prairie province, and

embodies much of the prairie culture with its long history of agricultural practices and

multiculturalism.

Located in the centre of the fur trade in the early 1800’s, Manitoba has a large number of

celebrated heritage sites and buildings. This fur trade attracted many European settlers and

contributed to a diverse population, including a large Francophone community. In addition to the

vibrant cultural mosaic that Canada is comprised of, Manitoba also has a rich and prosperous

First Nations community of peoples that are indigenous to Manitoba.

Whether within the Winnipeg city limits or in the Manitoba countryside, Manitoba has a unique

bundle of attractions to offer visitors. With miles of grasslands, rich farmland, natural forests,

white sand beaches, friendly communities and wildlife ranging from pelicans to polar bears, it’s

hard not to fall in love with the tranquil allure that this province provides.

Welcome to Canada

Winnipeg and its people: “A cold place but the people have

warm hearts!”

criteria:

· Have a valid study permit issued by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for a

minimum of six months;

· AND live in the province for a minimum of six months

Housing & Accommodations

On-Campus Housing

If you wish to stay in the University of Manitoba residence

housing, it is best to apply early! Student residences generally

fill to their maximum capacity in May each year for both the

fall and winter terms. You may submit your application for

residence to the housing office as soon as your nomination has

been approved by the Asper Exchange Coordinator. Please

note that the Mary Speechly/Taché Hall and the Arthur V

Mauro residences (AVM) are the closest residence to the

Drake Centre, where most Asper classes are taught.

Please visit the U of M housing website for further details at

http://umanitoba.ca/campus/housing

When booking your ticket to Winnipeg, please take into

consideration the official move-in dates of your assigned

residence. If you need to or wish to arrive before your residence officially opens, please contact the

Residence Office ([email protected]) to request permission for an early move-in. There is a

daily fee for early move move-ins.

If you are coming to Asper on exchange for the fall term only, you will be required to notify the

Residence Office by late October of your intention to move out before the winter term. Please contact

the Residence Office for the exact deadline to withdraw.

If you wish to remain in Winnipeg after your exams are written, you may apply for permission to

move out after your residence hall’s official move-out date. As in the case of an early move-in, a late

move-out will incur additional fees.

Homestay Program

The University of Manitoba Homestay Program is administered through the English Language

Centre. This is a good option if you want to experience life in Winnipeg together with a family and

be incorporated into their lifestyle. Please visit their website at

http://umanitoba.ca/student/elc/homestay for further information.

Off-Campus

Housing

Renting an apartment on your own can be a difficult option for exchange students, particularly if you

plan to stay in Winnipeg for less than one year as standard rental practice requires you to sign a one-

year lease. A common option for international students is to rent a room or to sublet an apartment.

The following resources may assist in searching for off-campus housing:

https://och.cc.umanitoba.ca/

15

Arrival in Winnipeg

All exchange students in the Asper School will be assigned a buddy by the Association of International

Management Student (AIMS) group. Your buddy may pick you up at the airport and may offer assistance

with getting settled in Winnipeg.

If you are not getting picked up by your AIMS

Buddy, the James Armstrong Richardson

International airport is in the northwest area

of Winnipeg. The University of Manitoba is

located in the suburb of Fort Garry on the

southern edge of the city. A taxi ride from the

airport to the university will take

approximately half an hour and should cost

approximately $40 - $50 CDN. Taxi rates are

set and you cannot barter with the drivers. It

is common to tip the taxi driver, however, it is

not necessary.

Although it is possible to take a public transit bus

from the airport to the U of M, it is an inconvenient option. It may be difficult to carry your luggage on

the bus and it will be necessary for you to transfer to a different bus route during the trip. As well, not all

bus routes operate on a 24-hour schedule and many routes offer limited service during non-peak hours.

For more information about the public transportation system in Winnipeg, visit the Winnipeg Transit

website at: www.winnipegtransit.com

Campus Arrival

Once you’ve settled in your residence or off-campus accommodation, be sure to visit the Asper Exchange

Coordinator in the Undergraduate Program Office located at 268 Drake Centre. The Exchange Coordinator

will be there to welcome you and provide you with information about the University of Manitoba, the

Asper School and your courses.

Clothing

Once you arrive to Winnipeg, there will be opportunities to

purchase clothing for fall and winter weather. The best way

to prepare for living in Winnipeg is to have a clothing budget

to be able to buy warm layers for our seasonal climate. We

suggest that students should be prepared for a $300 to $500

budget to purchase a warm jacket, boots, long underwear

and additional items,

depending on the term(s) of

study that you will be in

Canada.

Students coming to the Asper school are strongly advised to bring

business attire with them during their exchange. There will be

several Asper events, galas and presentations where you are

required to dress accordingly.

City Buses

City buses are Winnipeg’s form of

public transport. These extensive

bus routes will take you all over city

limit for an affordable student rate.

For further information on bus routes, times, and numbers visit

the Winnipeg transit website. This website offers a handy tool

called Navigo, which helps you plan your bus trip. Simply enter

your starting point, end point, and the time of day that you will be

traveling and Navigo will show you what buses to take, when to

take them, where the bus stops are located and how long your

trip will take (including walking time).

You may opt in to buy a U-Pass as an affordable bus pass option.

Taxi and Limousines

All taxi rides are metered fares and the price remains consistent throughout the day and night.

Typical Taxis fit a maximum of 4 people so if your party exceeds four, it might be more affordable

to book a limousine for a fixed price. Some common taxi companies include:

Duffy’s Taxi 204-925-0101 Unicity Taxi 204-925-3131 Unipro Taxi 204-927-3555

Money in Manitoba

Knowing your prices on goods & services There are two types of taxes applied to goods and services purchased in Manitoba. Overall consumers

pay an additional 13% in taxes on the sales of most goods and services

Goods and Service Tax

The first tax is the Goods and Service Tax

(GST) which is an additional 5% in the

Province of Manitoba. This tax excludes

sensitive essentials such as groceries,

residential rent, and medical services as well

as financial services

For further details: http://www.cra-

arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/tpcs/gst-tps/rts-eng/html

Common Methods of Payment Credit cards, debit cards and cash are widely

acceptable methods of payment throughout

Canada. Signage will be posted near the register

about acceptable methods.

When dining out with friends, it is common to

ask for separate bills. It is best to inform your

server when you are ordering so he or she can

keep track of everyone’s individual orders.

Provincial Sales Tax

In addition to the GST, there is a Provincial

Sales Tax (PST) which is an additional 8%

applied to the retail sale of most goods and

certain services in Manitoba. The tax is

calculated on the selling price before the GST

(Goods and Services Tax) is applied.

For further details:

http://www.gov.mb.ca/finance/taxation/taxe

s/retail.html

Example

Retail Item $24.95

GST $ 1.25

PST $ 2.00

Total $28.20

Tipping Tipping is a common practice in Canada. Tips is

usually about 15-20% of the bill. The tipping

amount can also be based on service so you

may lower the amount if you received poor

service. Remember, while tipping is optional it is

generally expected. Tipping is common for

restaurants, hair salons, spas, taxis, pubs and

clubs.

17

Traveling within Canada

Canada is a country of continental proportions and Winnipeg is an excellent central point from which to

explore it. Options for travelling around Canada include airplane, bus, train and rental car.

· Some students may decide to drive from

Winnipeg to Banff, Vancouver, Toronto or

Montreal. However, such trips require

plenty of time and endurance for the long

drives. Please ensure that you have the

appropriate driver’s license in order to rent

a car.

· Bus lines also make frequent trips across

Canada. Express routes are fairly expedient

(as they do not make frequent stops) and

less expensive than air travel. Information

on Greyhound bus services is available at

www.greyhound.ca

· Another option for travel across Canada is

to take the train. VIA Rail is a major railway

line with stops in every major city. You may

get a student discount on rates if you have an International Student Identity Card. For more

information visit www.viarail.ca

· You can also fly with several choices or airlines. Prices vary according to season and day of the

week. Airline options include Air Canada www.aircanada.com, Westjet www.westjet.com.

There are also several regional airlines available.

Travelling to the United States

If you are interested in travelling to the United States during your exchange term(s) in Canada, consider

applying for your USA visa (if applicable) while you are still at home. It can be challenging to receive a

visitor’s visa to the USA while in Canada because your status in Canada is temporary. Additionally, to

apply for a USA visa once you are in Canada, you must travel to a US consulate to apply in person. It is

not possible to apply by mail and there is no USA consulate in Manitoba that can process visas.

The Association of International Management Students (AIMS)

AIMS is an Asper student group that helps

international students adjust to school, to our

city and the Canadian culture by organizing

events through the year.

Some examples of AIMS events include a

Clear Lake Retreat and Welcome, sporting

events, Holiday Mountain ski trips, potluck

dinners and the Farewell Dinner.

The AIMS executive committee typically consist of

former Asper exchange students who have experienced

first-hand what it’s like to study in a new environment.

They work endlessly to help students create the most memorable experiences while studying abroad.

The AIMS buddy coordinator is responsible for assigning each incoming exchange student to a fellow

Asper student who will help you with your adjustment.
