The disruptive effect Trump’s presidency has on our country, our politics, our legal norms, our patients and our own psyches challenges us as clinicians and as citizens. Faced with information that is often demoralizing, destructive or untethered to reality, clinicians have to consider when to respond in a therapeutic mode and when to respond with direct action. Participants will engage with the presenter to clarify their thoughts, goals and sense of responsibility inside and outside the consulting room and consider the place for empathy and the place for action.

Sheila Markin Nielsen is a social worker and attorney, who practiced as a criminal prosecutor and now has a career-consulting firm. In her political blog, The Markin Report, Nielsen explains the complex Mueller investigation and criminal probes of the current administration. Wendy Selene is Director of Conferences and Continuing Education at the Institute and a faculty member and clinician in private practice.

As the first African-American woman Cook County State’s Attorney, Kim Foxx took office with a vision to transform it into a fairer, more-forward thinking agency focused on rebuilding public trust, promoting transparency and being proactive in making all communities safe. How can the State’s Attorney prevent violence in Chicago while helping those with mental illness, substance abuse and homelessness find resources outside the criminal justice system? What role can mental health practitioners take in working with the criminal justice system to achieve these goals?

Kimberly Foxx became Cook County State’s Attorney in 2016. Prior to that, she worked as Chief of Staff for the Cook County Board President, a guardian ad litem advocating for children in the child welfare system, and an Assistant State’s Attorney. Neal Spira is Dean of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute, a psychoanalyst in private practice, and past Medical Director of Beacon Therapeutic School. He writes a blog called A Deeper Look, which brings a psychoanalytic perspective to problems of contemporary political and social life.

We are more aware than ever of the need to come to terms with the racism that continues to pervade our society and institutions, including psychoanalysis. In what ways does psychoanalysis itself harbor elements of racist thought? In what ways can psychoanalysis help us examine and understand the lived experience of those scarred by slavery and its aftermath? Two scholar-clinicians will consider these questions. Race in Psychoanalysis by Celia Brickman examines the ramifications of the racial subtext embedded in Freud’s writing. Gibson’s book, Frederick Douglass, A Psychobiography offers a psychoanalytic interpretation of the life of Douglass, the great African-American statesman and orator who was born a slave.

Celia Brickman is a scholar-in-residence at the Center for Religion and Psychotherapy in Chicago where she practices psychotherapy and previously was the Director of Education. Danjuma Gibson is Associate Professor of Pastoral Care at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids where he also maintains a psychotherapy practice.

Psychoanalysis attends to the most complex and nonlinear system in the universe, the human mind. A new dimension to psychoanalytic thought integrates the findings from complexity theory and nonlinear systems theory to better understand the workings of mind, human development, interpersonal relationships, boundaries, and therapeutic processes.

Two pioneers in bringing the nonlinear-complexity revolution to psychoanalysis will explain concepts including fractals, the edge of chaos and emergence. Using clinical examples, everyday life experiences and infant research studies, they will illustrate how these ideas work in action to inform therapeutic processes, to support development and to understand perplexing psychological happenings.

Robert Galatzer-Levy is on the faculty of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute and is Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at the University of Chicago. Charles Jaffe is on the faculty of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute and on the Affiliated Faculty of the Rush University Department of Psychiatry.

Mark Solms, PhD Mark Solms, a pioneer in neuropsychoanalysis and a most engaging

lecturer, offers a two-day immersion into the cutting-edge field of neuropsychoanalysis, which links, as he puts it, the “science of the mind as an object with those of the mind as a subject.” Topics will include the role of the conscious id and rethinking instinct theory, why people suffer from feelings, the meaning of symptoms, a reconceptualization

of repression based on the nature of memory, the tasks of psychoanalytic treatment, and how countertransference, transference interpretations and working through contribute to the therapeutic process. The first day covers the rethinking of theory based on neuroscience findings. The second day will focus on implications for psychotherapy practice.

Mark Solms is a founder of the field of neuropsychoanalysis, which links the clinical findings of psychoanalysis with knowledge generated by neuroscience. He is a member of the British, American and South African Psychoanalytical Associations. His awards and honors include the Sigourney Prize and Honorary Fellowship of the American College of Psychiatrists. He has published over 300 articles and six books. His selected works were published in 2015 as The Feeling Brain.

How do practicing psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic theoreticians integrate contemporary findings of neuroscience, systems theory, nonlinear dynamic concepts and the epigenetic hierarchical model into their clinical and scholarly work? We continue the exploration of this topic with presentations featuring pioneers in psychoanalytic practice and scholarship. Building on last year’s program, Schools Is Out, these workshops will further our understanding of the most complex nonlinear system in the universe, the human mind.

Problems of love, whether between romantic partners, parent and child, siblings or the best of friends, complicate patient’s lives. People often present in therapy with problems of anxiety and depression that mask underlying problems of intimacy. In this group, participants will be alert to feelings of shame and guilt that help therapists discover the central conflicts that inhibit satisfying reciprocity and mutuality.

Benjamin Garber is director emeritus of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute Children’s Grief Center and a training and supervising analyst at the Institute. Renee Rapp is a graduate of the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program and a therapist in the Children’s Grief Center.

Parents develop in parallel with their children. Therapists of children and therapists of parents are in an excellent position to assist in this mutual developmental process. After opening with a brief introduction to a psychoanalytic perspective on parenthood, two child analysts will describe how they engaged parents of children in treatment, one a young child and one an adolescent, so all could resume progressive development.
