School culture and climate

Elgin Elementary has worked to establish a positive and caring school environment through a campus-wide implementation of the groundwork handbook forbehavior. All staff members contribute to the PBIS Committee, by serving on sub-committees dedicated to target areas of need. A dedicated group of staffmembers contributes to the PBIS team by meeting regularly to review school-wide expectations, to determine innovative ways to increase studentrecognition, and to review Response to Intervention (RtI) procedures for both behavior and academics. The PBIS team also created school-wide expectationsposters that remind students and staff what it means to be safe, respectful, and responsible in all areas of school and to remind staff what it means to bepresent, proactive, and professional in all areas of school.

Elgin Elementary closely follows EISD's adopted curriculum and scope and sequence resources (TEKS Resource System), which are tightly aligned to gradelevel TEKS and PreK Guidelines. Teachers follow an assessment calendar meant to ensure that they stay on track with administering common unitassessments; therefore addressing all TEKS in a timely manner. Student progress is measured through report card grades, unit assessments, and beginning,middle, and end-of-year screeners. Teachers meet as a Professional Learning Community (PLC) to review assessment data and to plan for instruction basedon said data. The Response to Intervention (RtI) process is actively implemented to assist students in need of intervention. Campus administrators,Instructional Specialist, and Master Teachers assist teachers in addressing students that need intervention. Focus of interventions is student growth.

Parent and Community Engagement

Parent and Community Engagement Summary

Elgin Elementary School seeks to partner with parents, family members, and the local Elgin Community. Newsletters from campus administration andteachers are sent home at least once per six weeks period, Facebook, Class Dojo, and School Messenger are used to provide email and phone messagesregularly. Several teachers also communicate with families via email or teacher websites. The campus invites parents to attend special events like Meet theTeacher Night, book fairs, award ceremonies, student musical and art shows, and Family Science Night. The Elgin Elementary Parent-Teacher Associationand parent volunteers assist the campus by supporting teachers and students. The Pre-K team plans for monthly parent involvement activities and the Pre-KDual Language team has been trained to offer parents training on guided reading at home. The campus has recently added a community garden and hostsmonthly gardening days for family members to participate in. Our school also collaborates with Elgin High School and Elgin Middle school through a penpal program. Elgin High School students that are enrolled in the Ready, Set, Teach program (aspiring teachers) also contribute by working directly withteachers and students.

Elgin Elementary designs our master schedule around best practices in regards to amount of time required to effectively teach all content areas and followingdistrict-provided instructional minutes. The biggest blocks of learning time are devoted to the content areas of math and reading. In PLC meetings, data isconsistently reviewed. Organizational efforts that are in place include the PBIS team, grade-level team leaders, the campus safety team, weeklyadministrative cabinet meetings, instructional rounds by district leaders, weekly faculty meetings, and weekly classroom written observations.
