MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

DIRECTOR REPORTS

2018-19 has been another outstanding year for MacMasters Beach SLSC and I want to extend my thanks to every member for the support and commitment they have made during the year.

The club has once again delivered on its core responsibility to patrol our beach and provide a safer environment for the users of our beach. The patrol statistics for 2018-19 highlight our success in providing a safer beach:

• Patrol Hours 7,389• Beach Attendance in patrol hours 60,276• Preventative Actions 3,244• First Aids 72 • Ambulance 5• Beach Closed 45 hours• Rescues 45

I want to congratulate all our patrol members who formed 12 Patrols this year. Each patrol was well trained and equipped. The quality of our training was demonstrated in each rescue, first aid, preventative action and in our strong performance in the Patrol Inspections.

Our membership numbers remained strong, with total membership at 587, comprising 173 patrolling members, 172 nippers, 159 associates and 83 other categories.

The club’s finances have remained very strong in 2018/19 and the club is well positioned to meet our future commitments. A great many people have worked very hard to help achieve this outcome, with fundraising raffles, donations, sponsorship, bar and hall operations, grants and the wonderful support of Local, State and Federal Governments being important contributors.

The club is fortunate to have the support of our sponsors and a great many generous donors, who are all on the back cover of this report.

Our strong finances have enabled us to keep our clubhouse, surf rescue and competition equipment up to date and in excellent condition. Our clubhouse is our major asset and we are very fortunate to be the only club on the Central Coast who owns its clubhouse. The club completed a major renovation in 2018/19, which has greatly improved the amenity and function of our clubhouse.

The club’s performance in surf sports at Junior, Senior and Masters level, has been very strong this year. The club’s representation at Branch, State and National Titles has been very satisfying.

Our Masters team has excelled, being crowned Branch Champions for 2018/19. A first for our club!

The club’s strength in boat rowing continues to grow, with 7 crews now representing our club.

Our success at competition has its foundation in the activities that are on display at our beach every Sunday morning; be it nippers, skills training, the Sunday Point Score Board and Swim or Macs Maniacs. It is great to see the fun and enjoyment that happens every weekend.

Community and member events are an important focus for our club and our ANZAC Day service, Surf club Open Day, Prawn and Oyster Lunch, Five Lands Walk, the Junior and Senior Presentations, Christmas Carols, Christmas Drinks, State of Origin nights and the regular band entertainment, have all been well attended.

The Duke of Edinburgh Program continues as an important opportunity for our younger members to excel in community service and personal achievement. Many club members have achieved the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award since our club’s program commenced.

Our website, monthly Point Break newsletter and Facebook site are widely read and enjoyed by all members.

The administration of all surf clubs is becoming ever more complex and I want to thank our great team of ‘behind the scenes’ volunteers, who keep our finances, reporting and compliance up to date.

The club’s Board of Directors have done a wonderful job in steering our club and I want to thank Jan Sillato, David White, John Evans, Michael Norman, Peter Roden, Alison McNeill, Craig Lee and Graham Johnston, for their outstanding work. Jan has decided not to stand again for the position of Deputy President, to focus on the areas where she makes an outstanding contribution to the club. I thank her for her work as Deputy President and I welcome Kylie Dickinson, who was elected as Deputy President at the Election Meeting for the coming year.

I also want to thank the staff and directors of Surf Life Saving Central Coast, for the support they have provided across the season.

I look forward to seeing all our members back on the beach for the 2019/20 season.

2018/2019 ANNUAL REPORT

I am pleased to report once again this year, that our donors, supporters and major sponsors were all extremely generous with their time and contributions to our surf club.

Our major sponsors, Belle Property and Barefoot Cafe, continue to provide invaluable financial support to our club in so many ways. Richard and Varissa from Barefoot Cafe have again provided fantastic catering throughout the season. Of course, they also provide meals to all our wonderful volunteer bar staff every weekend, not to mention the great food which is available to our patrons, to help meet our RSA requirements.

We are also very grateful to our other generous and long term supporters, including Macquarie Bank, Greenstone Partners and Loo Loos Coffee Shack. They have all been fantastic supporters for many years.

Thanks also to WEX Motorpass, who renewed their fuel sponsorship again this year and to JD’s Family Automotive, who are always available to service our IRB motors and provide assistance whenever required. To Pete and Sue Offner of Seacoast Fishing, who continue to provide our club with amazing seafood platters, which we raffle throughout the season. These raffles are always well supported and these seafood trays are a sought after prize.

Many thanks also goes to Ability Links NSW, who came on board this year to assist the Surf Club to become a more inclusive surf club, for the wider community who may have mobility issues. They generously sponsored the purchase of two beach wheelchairs, accessible signage in and around the club, and also a back rest for our accessible toilet.

In addition to these wonderful supporters, our club continually receives donations, big and small, and these generous donations assist in the maintenance, improvement and sustain-ability of our nipper gear, patrol gear and club in general. A big thank you to each and eve-ryone of you who have kindly donated to MacMasters Beach SLSC.

Local community groups also support our club, with their generous contributions throughout the season. Thanks goes to the Ladies Social Club and The Garden Club in particular. These groups form a major part of our local community and MacMasters Beach SLSC is grateful for their continued support.

Various grant applications were submitted and successful this year. This allowed the club to complete various projects, such as updating our PA system, the purchase of our solar batteries for power storage, resurfacing the car park at

the rear of the clubhouse, purchasing necessary Duke of Edinburgh equipment, updating to digital training manikins, and purchasing a nipper “board rescue” board for competition.

We also received generous Government funding from the Australian Government, the NSW Government, Central Coast Council and support from Surf Life Saving NSW, enabling our club to access important lifesaving equipment, giving our volunteer patrol members the necessary equipment to keep our community and visitors safe on the beach all year round.

Our club members once again braved the heat of the day, early in January, to collect donations from our locals, by walking the streets and accepting kind donations, given by residents and holiday makers, in appreciation of the great job our patrolling members in keeping Macs Beach safe.

Thanks must also go to our honorary auditors, Fortunity Chartered Accountants & Financial Planners, who provide their valuable services all year round and also to our honorary legal officer, Alan Bingham of Peninsula Law. Their continued support and advice, ensures our club runs smoothly and with the required compliance.

I have enjoyed my two year tenure as Deputy President of MacMasters Beach Surf Life Saving Club, and I am very pleased to be handing the reins over to Kylie Dickinson. I know Kylie will do an amazing job on our board, and I know she is looking forward to continuing the solid relationships with all our amazing sponsors and supporters of Macs Surf Club.

I sincerely thank our many sponsors and supporters for being a part of our club’s success this season. It has been my pleasure to work with you all, and MacMasters Beach SLSC is thriving because of your genuine kindness and dedication to our club.

MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

The past year has been a very successful one for the club. Whilst not successful in the context of awards from branch, the club has operated exceptionally well. This has been due to the leadership of our president, an extraordinarily committed Board of Directors, and the exceptional contribution of our numerous volunteers who give their time so willingly, competently and unselfishly.

Our president’s long-term commitment to the club has manifested itself in his nomination for life membership, which comes before the Annual Meeting for ratification. The Board of Directors work well together, each managing his/her portfolio efficiently and effectively, yet working together to ensure the achievement of the corporate responsibility of the board.

Supported by dozens of volunteers identified in this report, our volunteer managers serve beyond the call of duty to result in the efficient and effective operation of the key operational, on and off beach, functions of the club on each of which a detailed report is provided in this annual report.

All of this has manifested itself in the growth of the club’s operations, enabling members to benefit with the excellent

renovations of the club house, financial support to attend the Aussie Titles on the Gold Coast, our first-time achievement of the Branch Masters title, along with noteworthy achievements.

Club membership is strong, maintaining the increases of previous years and community support and involvement proven by the strong community and sponsor support, as well as government grants. The club is an excellent example of the way to harmoniously and cooperatively work as a team, as well as to give to our members and the community, which the community and our members repay by giving to us to help us serve them better.

Despite increasing call for the services the club provides, as well as escalating regulatory control and governance requirements, the club maintains its volunteer operation. Volunteers are the life blood of the club – without them the club would not operate as it does.

To maintain the volunteer nature of the club the Board of Directors is working on a succession plan and the use of current cloud based technology to streamline operations, minimising work for our volunteers and facilitating director and management succession.

Communications with our members and the community is an essential element of the success of the club’s operations, which has been masterfully performed by our Media Manager, Suzie Morris, who has been acknowledged as Club Worker of the Year.

I am proud to have my role in the club and I thank the club for the opportunity. I am confident that the next and future years will be as good and that we can retain the distinction of being one of the only two clubs in the Branch which does all this with volunteers. Let’s seek to keep the culture of the club as it is.

David White - Director of Administration

The club’s accounts for the for the year ended April 30th 2019 continue to show a very strong financial position in the key areas of operating profit, cash flow and trading margins.

A summary of our key financial information is as follows:

Income for the club this financial year totalled $439,056, a 2,1% increase from the 2017/18 result of $428,975. Bar Sales continue to be the largest contributor to the income figure at $195,928 or 44,6% of income. This compared with a figure of $177,236 or 42% of income in 2017/18.

Bar expenses of $95,517 ($93,140 in 2018) are the largest single expense item, bar sales contributed $100,411 to the gross income of the club. This result, would not have been

achieved without the excellent efforts of Steve O’hara, Carole Thompson and the bar volunteer staff.

Donation income is at $50,944 for the 2018/19 year, compared with $53,996 for 2017/18

Operating profit for the year was $68,492 after providing for depreciation of $57,011, ($14,776 operating profit in 2017/18 after providing for depreciation of $53,162.)

Cash flow for the year is down by $144,141. However, building renovations and other capital expenditure acquisitions of $252,214 were the major reason for the negative cash flow for the 2018/19 year. The building renovation expenditure for 2018/19 was flagged in our 2017/18 Annual Report. Even after spending $252,214 on capital items during the year, our bank balance of $194,097 ensures that the club commences the new year in a very healthy cash position.

In summary, a very good financial result was achieved in the 2018/19 by the club and the outlook for 2019 year remains extremely positive.

Once again, a very big thank you to the club bookkeeper, Steve Sillato for his diligence and commitment to the role. Denise Sherring for her wonderful support and willingness to take on additional responsibilities and a big thank you to all our volunteers who have contributed to this great team result.

2018/2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Much quieter year in the Education sector of the club, following strong growth in the previous years. Our “core” awards of Surf Bronze were well supported by our boaties with six new rowers coming to our club. However, only one nipper parent, one new member and one junior member completed the required training. As a club, we need to improve on this, perhaps adopting varied training options, especially for our juniors coming through.

The nipper program was extremely busy for the training team, with the manikins regularly “out on the grass”, to the amusement of the public, on most weekends. The rookies were highly proactive, as 15 completed the Surf Rescue Certificate. Many thanks to Jason Vella and team for providing the incentive and enthusiasm to make the training interesting. There is a strong presence within our patrols for Advanced Resuscitation, Spinal Management and First Aid skills, however, many patrolling members still do not have these qualifications. This needs to be addressed. Our patrolling members completed, to a very high standard, two major fractures and two spinals on our beach this season. Fellow patrolling members need to ask themselves “could I have managed these incidents”. It is hard to predict what and when an incident is going to happen whilst on patrol and we must learn from the Scout motto, “be prepared”. Quality training from Surf NSW was welcomed at our club, through the Remote Area First Aid Course and Spinal Management Course, where patient assessment and treatment options were successfully completed by our members, “in the bush” behind the rock pools. The two Spinal Management courses, facilitated by Ross Blouse and Susie Gerrish, provided quality and valuable out of the ordinary member training.

MacMasters Beach SLSC has struggled for IRB drivers and crew, and with valuable time and input from the training team, spearheaded by Michael Morrison, they delivered three drivers and only one crew person. Additional training is being completed during the offseason to build on these numbers. The majority of Surf Life Saving courses are aligned with TAFE, enabling national recognition within the workforce for courses completed. This TAFE alliance created issues within training and assessment, following TAFE’s actions in “upgrading” the qualification requirements for trainers and assessors. The upgrade required four days of face-to-face training, plus hours of additional assessments. Rod Jordan, Lyn Drummond and Graham Johnston completed this upgrade to enable MacMasters to continue to manage our own assessments.

Proficiency re-qualifications began early in the season, with Brad Norman gathering all boaties for their resuscitation and theory assessments, then backed it up on an early patrol for the water component. Fellow patrol members attended without the usual harassment, with content experts Greg Ferguson, Jan Sillato, Pat and Vince Roberts, Lauren and Rhonda Hall, Matt Staples and Warren Watkins, all providing assistance.

Rod Jordan’s quality and skills in training, completing proficiencies, and assessing resuscitation must be commended. His efforts have maintained quality and confident skills in resuscitation within senior member ranks. Successful grants and support from Central Coast and NSW Life Saving have enabled our club to possess quality training products. The training room is the envy of all other clubs, with a new laptop and sound system in our room. Additional numbers are required within our training team, especially with the administration of the paperwork and the promotion and monitoring of online courses now required to complete individual awards. Our club will expand and promote Branch based courses, highlighted by the 2019 Education Field Day booked for August, 2019. The tried and tested days of face-to-face training is changing as technology delivers online courses through the member portal. The MacMasters Beach SLSC training team and club need to adopt, monitor and promote individual member’s portals to meet these training challenges.

For my team our approach as volunteers involved in training, is to “keep it simple”, and “show me what you can do”, then assess utilising the competency-based training approach recommended by NSW Surf Life Saving, complete the paperwork and move on. Many thanks to the patrolling members for attending proficiencies and awards, and for those who decline, again ask yourself “could I have provided the care to manage that incident?”

2018/2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Thank you all for the one minute silence at Senior Presentation in honour of Ross and Andrew Powell from Port Campbell, Victoria. It is a reminder that the ocean can be a dangerous place. In our role protecting the community, we must be constantly aware of this.

Another great year on the beach has passed, due to great work by our 12 Patrols - no lives were lost.

It is impossible to place a value on the service our members provide to the community. In an era where volunteer support has been in decline, our members have defied the trend, spending 7,389 hours protecting 60,276 visitors to the beach over the last season.

During the season, we have completed 3,244 Preventions, 45 Rescues, 72 First Aids and 5 Ambulance call outs.

Our Patrols always need support to make them work. A massive “Thank You” to:

• Our Patrol Captains: Graham Johnston, Warren Watkins, Jim Myers, Amy Lawrence/Michael Bambridge, Bruce Staples, Matt Ryan, Vince Roberts, Geoff Dominguez/Andrew Duck, Bill Queripel, Brad Norman and Alan Blackman, for leading our Patrols.

• Phil Boxsell for managing the Patrol Roster (and his boundless enthusiasm).

• Rod Jordan for a First Aid Room that always has what is required.

• JD’s Family Automotive for a set of motors that didn’t miss a beat!

• Suzie and Tim Morris for the Facebook patrol posts.

• Danny and Lyn Drummond for our safety audits.

• Mick Morrison for another year looking after the IRBs.

• Geoff Dominguez for his enthusiasm and support.

Another season finished, time to celebrate our successes and to commend all our members. We really are members of the best club on the coast – MacMasters Beach is a special place. This season we had members receive the National Medal for over 30 hours patrol service every year for 15 years, National Patrol Service Awards – 30 years, 25 years, 20 years, 15 years and 10 years – for 16 hours on patrol every year, as well as the many education course award certificates and medals.

Our Nippers had lots of fun on the beach, learning basic life saving skills, how to be safe in the water and various beach and surf skills. Our Rookies (U13 & U14 groups) started patrolling as well as completing their Surf Rescue Certificates. Carnivals were well attended by all age groups with many great results. All age groups assisted with fundraising either with the Nipper BBQ, selling raffle tickets or with the Annual Doorknock. These are all vital parts of keeping our club running.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is really strong with 46 members enrolled in the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. We have had one Gold Award completed this season with many more to complete next season. The camps for this season included camping, hiking, kayaking, abseiling, caving, horse-riding, blow-up boat paddling.

Peter Norman, our boat captain celebrated 40 years in this position – not bad for someone who said he’d do it for a few years! Our boat crews continue to go from strength to strength. We had 7 crews this season and 6 crews managed to get to The Australian Titles on the Gold Coast.

We also had 4 members compete at The Aussies – 3 Opens and 1 Master – and Molly Sheppard came home with a Bronze Medal for Surfing.

This season we won Branch Masters for the first time ever!!! Our dedicated team had been training, attending many carnivals and having a fantastic time. They have all achieved great results.

Every Sunday morning of the season the Point score Board and Swim is run. Each week a group of our members meet to swim and/or paddle to battle it out for the top scorer who wins each category at Senior Presentation. From Mothers’ Day to Fathers’ Day, this becomes Macs Maniacs, with a walk/run up the beach then a swim or at least getting your head wet!

Patrols are the focus of surf clubs and we are so fortunate that 173 of our members volunteer their time to patrol MacMasters Beach. We had 101 + 20 Rookies achieve 100% for the season – a huge effort! There are many ways to assist on patrols – IRB drivers/crew, radio operators, Bronze medallion, first aid, Captain and Vice-Captain.

There were so many celebrations over the season, including our Christmas Party (Twilight Nippers, Christmas Carols, brass band, Volunteer drinks), Christmas in July, Welcome to Summer Party, Junior Presentation Day and Senior Presentation Night, Prawn & Oyster Luncheon to name a few. We hosted the launch for the new Rookie Sponsor for SLS Central Coast, Resinc Solar, as well as one day of the Trans Tasman Series.

None of this would have been possible without our volunteers, who perform a multitude of roles within the club. We are 100% run by volunteers from Directors, patrol members, Education, Nipper Co-Ordinators, Age Managers, Boat trainers, House Manager, Bar Staff, Registrars, Officials, Water Safety, fundraising, catering, gym manager, OH&S, Macs Maniacs…….and everyone else who helps our club.

I’d like to thank everyone for making my job so rewarding – Director of Member Services – the members of our club make MacMasters Beach SLSC a special place to belong to.

Director of Member Services Alison McNeill

2018/2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Another great year for MacMasters Beach SLSC this past 2018/19 season, across all aspects of the club on the competition front.

With 127 Nippers available for competition U8-U14, we had a total of 58 on average compete this season across the three local carnivals held at Umina, Terrigal and Toowoon Bay beaches, culminating in 48 representing Macs at Soldiers Beach for the Branch Titles. This great representation resulted in achieving 8 Gold, 11 Silver, 8 Bronze, along with 19 4th/6th placing in finals. This haul had Macs achieving a very honorable 5th Place, which is a great result for our small club.

Notable achievements for the Junior R&R 5 person, of Lily Castles, Emma Finnelley, Claire Hogger, Charlotte Morris and Zoe Vella taking the trifecta of gold at the local carnivals and finishing the season off with gold at Branch and bronze at State. Congratulations young ladies on a great season. Also big on the podium were Skye Hackshall, Bree Josling and Hamish Taylor-Martin, with Hamish rounding out the season at State with a bronze in the swim and a 6th in the Ironman. Congratulations to all competitors on your efforts this season.

Macs Cadets/Opens were few in numbers for this season, with around 5 of our long serving available for carnivals. This small team of Poppi Lever, Molly Sheppard, Danielle MacPherson, Alex Walters and Oscar Crowe had a bunch of fun along the way raking in a few medals. These guys were ably supported by Conor Hodgkinson, Zoe Vella and Marlee Przybyla stepping up for teams.

There was one last hurrah for the trio of Poppi, Molly and Danielle, who have combined since they began nippers, for a crack at Aussies. Fun along the way turned to a big celebration for Molly, achieving a bronze in U/15 Surfing. For Molly, this capped off a great season, as she had taken silver in the U/14 & U/15 State Titles held in September 2018, earlier in the season. Well done Molly.

Congratulations and great reward for Hamish Taylor-Martin U/12, Skye Hackshall U/12, Bree Josling U/12 and Poppi Lever U/15 on making the Central Coast Inter branch Team and representing the club, what a great experience for these guys.

Even more congratulations for Poppi for going on and making the 2019 Youth Pathway Cup NSW Team.

The Masters juggernaut rolled on. With a small team of around 6-7 dedicated to training and competing early in the season, proving fruitful with a huge haul of medals and placings in

abundance. The events leading up to Branch had a profound effect throughout the senior members, with numbers increasing to a whopping 22 competitors for Branch, all this from zero in season 2016-2017. The hard work, dedication to training, along with great spirit, saw an amazing first for MacMasters Beach SLSC.

The Masters were able to take 1st place overall for the first time in the club’s history. A fantastic result, especially for those who reinvigorated our members to get on board for the ride. Looking forward to seeing what next season brings. Well done to all involved.

Well before the beginning and well after the season finishes there are still carnivals happening. These are the Pool Rescue events. Macs is taking small steps in this area and are building a small team riding on the success of medaling at State in previous years. This is all due to the enthusiasm of Suzanne Petrie taking this on board, for this I thank Suzanne very much.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my fellow board members for their unwavering support and enthusiasm throughout the past season.

This season, unlike any other, could not have been achieved without the continued support from a band of loyal volunteers performing their roles week after week which make up all things Competition. A huge thank you to: Trent Martin and Jan Sillato for board coaching; Steve Kleppen for running the handicap swim and board Sunday sessions; Jo Finnelley assisted by Val Crowe on the art of Carnival Manager; Water Safety Officials, Leigh Walters and Frank Hodgkinson; Pete and Mick Norman for their continued support and wisdom in the boat arena. Many thanks also to those who helped these guys in their roles, much appreciated.

Director of Competition Craig Lee

2018/2019 ANNUAL REPORT

For 40 consecutive years Peter Norman has held the position of Boat Captain at MacMasters Beach SLSC.

Peter took over the position from his father Rex in the 1978/79 season and remains the Boat Captain to this day. Throughout his captaincy, the boat section has continued to grow and thrive, with Macs well known by other surf clubs as a ‘Boat Club’.

As Boat Captain, Peter has forged long-lasting relationships with many sponsors – too many to mention. However, two major relationships include Brooks Tires who supported the boat section for 30 years and Greenstone Partners who have donated 3 boats over the past 15 years. It is our sponsors who provide us with the gear to compete and we are so lucky to have the incredible support we do, thanks to the hard work and consistency Peter has put into maintaining these relationships and the upkeep of our gear.

The erection of two boat sheds during this time, with the boat shed behind Kincumber Hotel built in 1979/80 and the current boat shed, built directly thanks to Peter and his family’s relationship with Holy Cross Church, on the land of the Sisters of St Joseph at South Kincumber built in season 2000/01, have given Macs crews prime training spots on the coast and the envy of many clubs.

Peter has strong relationships with equipment manufacturers, including Croker Oars, Miles Surfboats and now Perry Surfboats ensuring that the club always receives repair work quickly, and the ability to communicate what we need with new equipment.

Result wise, the boat section continued to grow, with the club earning its first gold medal (or any medal) at Branch, State, ASRL and Australian titles during this era. There has also been a flood of other medals won throughout all possible carnivals

and MacMasters Beach has represented the Central Coast at the Interbranch Championships multiple times. In the 40 years, crews have travelled around the country, including a trip to Tasmania and eight big trips to Perth. We were also lucky enough to hit international waters with the trip to Gallipoli, Turkey for 11 of our members.

Peter’s achievements over his 40 years include:

• 1978/79 Bronze Medal, Reserve Grade Men, Australian Titles Crew: Rex Norman (Sweep), Peter Norman, Michael Norman, Benny Sierek, Ron Rider.

• Captain of the patrol winning Patrol of the Year in 1985/1986 and 1986/1987.

• Construction of the boat shed at Kincumber Hotel in 79/80 season and South Kincumber in 2000/01.

• 14 new and second hand surf boats, with some 25 sets of oars and 20 plus sweep oars.

• National Boat Inspector and in 2003, becoming a life member of the club.

• Ongoing donations of 2 x tents, trailers, cash, maintenance, repairs, rowlock housings, apparel, pumps and boat fittings throughout the duration.

• Over $450,000 in donations for the boat section of the club.

• Silver Medal, Australian Titles, Under 18 Men, 1998/99 Peter Norman (Sweep), Mitch Horton, James Kleppen, Scott Broughton, Brad Jones.

• Gold Medal ASRL Titles in the Under 18 Men 1998/99 and Under 23 Female 2010/11.

• Gold Medal in the State Titles Under 23 Women 2010/11.

Testimonial to Peter Norman

MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

Our “Macs Masters” backed up again for the 2018-2019 season, bigger and better than ever before. This season, “Macs Masters” were made up of athletes aged from 31 through to late 60s. Totally inspirational - each and every one of them. Many members joined for their first year of masters this season and were pleasantly surprised at how relaxed and fun it was. We are happy to welcome new masters at any time to join this fabulous team of athletes. Just come and give it a go!! “Macs Masters” competed fiercely in local carnivals, the Nutty Masters carnival, the Ski and Board Series, the Fingal Bay Masters carnival, and peaked at the Central Coast Branch Masters carnival at Avoca Beach in February 2019. A team of more than 20 “Macs Masters” competitors turned up to the local Branch carnival, participating in almost every event available, sometimes having multiple teams in the one event. Many of them braved the large surf and challenging conditions, to bring home a phenomenal number of medals. At the end of the day, “Macs Masters” were the champions!!!! Winning the Central Coast Branch carnival for the very first time in MacMasters Beach SLSC’s history. It just shows, that a group working together as a team can reap the rewards and represent true dedication to a great little surf club.

Another highlight was our “Macs Masters” marching proudly with each other, alongside our cadets, seniors and boat crews, to win the gold in the Branch March Past event at Avoca. To represent our club in this prestigious traditional event was an awesome experience for all our “Macs Masters”. We have grand plans for next year - more than just the usual carnivals, Branch, State and Aussies, our “Macs Masters” have committed to going on tour to Italy for the World Pool Rescue and Surf Life Saving Championships in September 2020. They will be training hard next season and will be aiming to fundraise so that their travels are little more within reach. Training continues through the off-season, at Macs Maniacs and also some pool sessions, to keep these fine oldies, I mean athletes, in shape ready for the upcoming 2019-2020 season. Feel free to come along and join the more mature end of our competitive members in having fun. The 2019-2020 season is going to be huge for our “Macs Masters”.

Handicap Point Score

Macs Maniacs

Well, it's over 20 years that the club's handicap swim and board events have been running. It is such a popular event that the numbers are getting bigger all the time as junior and senior members compete on Sundays during the surf season. The 2018-2019 season has brought out the best in the club's members in competing, sportsmanship and humour in regards to comments about handicap times from a selection of senior members. For the fastest fish in the ocean there has been a toss-up between the Marlin and the Sailfish. Well I would say for the juniors they are the Marlins in the swimming and the Sailfish on the boards, a great effort from all. The season saw a number of days with powerful surf conditions, although this did not stop the competitors entering and prevailing in these conditions with competiton being tight as always.

Congratulations to Kylie Dickinson for a well-deserved win in the handicap swim. Congratulations to Frank Hodgkinson

for winning the handicap board, also showing that tips from his daughter, Emily (a previous winner) has paid off. The HC Swim and Board is an event for encouragement, fun and friendly competition. Thanks to all participants and our water safety crews. A very special thanks to Tracy Przybyla for running the HC Swim and Board, this includes issuing the handicaps, calling the starts, and calling the finish times. Well done Tracy.

See you all next season

Steve Kleppen

This being our 19th year of swimming on a Sunday morning. The average attendance was around 35 club members enjoying the thrill of a winter swim with their mates. The mantra of maniacs “you only have to get you head wet” didn’t need repeating as all were keen to swim, whatever the water temperature.

As usual we had our theme days: big brekkie; inflatables; iceberg; favourite sporting team; heroes.

The “Bird” was a popular award, where all were busting to win it each week.

The overall Maniac of the Year was Michael Bambridge.

Michael earned this for being our human temperature gauge on the coolness of the water as we entered the water for our swims.

The end of season “Maniac Ball” doubled up as a fund raiser for drought stricken farmers and was a traditional bush dance with old favourite dances and games.

It has been fantastic to see this community activity continue at Macs. It shows how much the Macs community is truly unique and special.

The July Bronze Camp at the Dharug National Park was supervised by Andrew Duck and Val Crowe and attended by Bronze Members – Alec Walters, Oscar Crowe, Jamie McNeill, Anya Paszkowski, Saba Horne and Erin Hamilton. The two-day camp involved walking from Mangrove Mountain to ten Mile Hollow and camping overnight. The temperature dropped to 2 degrees! It included a visit to the Buddhist retreat in the morning and some off-track bush bashing, which was character building and was a great experience for all.

The October Silver Camp was supervised by Andrew Duck and Val Crowe and attended by Silver Members – Anya Paszkowski, Jamie McNeill, Kieran Vella, Oscar Crowe and Campbell Gillies. The three-day kayaking, hiking and abseiling camp involved hiking from Spencer to Gentleman’s Halt, Glenworth Valley and back.

The January Gold Camp was supervised by Geoff Dominguez and Graeme Jones and attended by Gold Members Jayden Duck, Harrison Petheram, Grant Offner and Angus Dominguez. The 4 day walking camp was through the Brisbane Water National Park. We trekked from Somersby Falls down the track and bush bashed through to Flood Creek, inflated rafts and floated down to Mooney Creek, walked from old Mooney Bridge to Piles Creek, where we camped the first night. We hiked the next day to Pindar Cave, where we swam in the fresh water creek and camped in the cave. Next day, we walked to Rocky Ponds, camped overnight and swam in the ponds. The last day was a spectacular walk along the cliff top above Spring Beach and Little Wobby to Patonga Creek where, Andrew Duck picked us up by boat to transfer us to Patonga camping ground. 52km walked, 20 walking hours, 1300m climbing, 2lt sweat used and lots of well-fed leeches!

The April Bronze Camp was supervised by Andrew Duck and Tracy Przybyla and attended by new Bronze members Cindy Trigg, Zoe Vella, Paddy Hingerty, Chloe Sapsford, Claire Hogger, Marlee Przybyla, Angus Lowrie, Conor Hodgkinson and Lily Castles. They kayaked up Patonga Creek, then hiked to Rocky Ponds and back to camp overnight. Next day paddled down Patonga Creek to Middle Head opposite Lion Island. There was a one km off track hike to Aboriginal carvings and return to Patonga Camping Ground.

2018/2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Clubhouse: During the last twenty months, the clubhouse has undergone a major transformation. Faced with the inability to increase the useable space within the existing envelope, the board authorised a major restructuring of the internal arrangement of the useable space. This involved the creation of a dedicated storage area, with designed spaces for clothing and space for the storage of club furniture, a dedicated administration office, and additional space for the Barefoot Café, including the shared use of the glassed verandah for the café when not required for club activities. Importantly, additional and better placed racking has been constructed for boards, skis and all surf life saving equipment and importantly our R&R Reels. Environmentally and economically, the maximum number of solar panels have been installed and a grant has been received to install a battery system to optimise the use of the power generated by our new solar system. A grant assisted the club applying an asphalt surface to the car park, enhancing the appearance and utility of the car park area and importantly relieving the bare feet that inevitably have to traverse this area regularly. Another grant enabled the acquisition of a new public address system, which also assists with functions for which the club continues to be available at times when it is not required for use for club purposes. A new Wi-Fi system has been installed, with separate connections for club operational use and for the membership and public generally, satisfying what emerged as a demand and keeping the club at the sharp edge of technology, facilitated by connection to the NBN. We have a new Smart TV in the general bar area and a projector for viewing popular sporting games and presentations. New furniture has enhanced the appearance of the club and its club and community use. Angela Veschetti, our cleaner, retired from the excellent job she did for the club and who, in doing so, provided invaluable assistance in securing the services of a new contract cleaner. In all the clubhouse is in excellent condition evidenced by its heavy use by the members, the community and the public, as well as by a material reduction in the cost of repairs and renovations seen in the club’s Financial Statement. Bar: The bar continues to operate, due to the continued commitment of volunteer bar staff that are critical to the effective operation and financial position of the club. Thank you one and all for your deeply appreciated and invaluable contribution to the operation and financial performance of the club. Our volunteer Bar Managers and Bar Staff give this valued contribution to our club at personal cost to themselves. Functions and Community: The club continues to be used for community events and meetings for no charge, as well as for functions on hire, all arranged by our Functions Manager who also provides valuable support for the clubhouse and bar operations.

Anzac DayOur 13th ANZAC Service was another great success with a record number in attendance. The day was made memorable by contributions made by;Club Member, Tim Ford AO, for delivering the ANZAC address. The Brisbane Water Brass Band, once again an integral part of the service and to Brian Finlay for his moving playing of the Last Post and Reveille.Vivienne McLaren from Coast Opera Australia for singing the Australian National Anthem and Flanders Field.Captain Samuel Rynne of the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery, who travelled from Adelaide to deliver The Ode at our Service.David White, Director of Administration, who read the prayer and Club Member Alex McMartin, who took the salute and performed the Raising of the Flag.

As always, our club members pitched in – thanks to Danny Drummond who provided both his expertise in sound and his PA system, Tim Morris with PA set-up, Suzie Morris for once again being the club photographer. Angus Dominguez, Jayden Duck and Harrison Petheram, who assisted on the day with setting up, packing away and cleaning the club forecourt.

Last, but not least, thanks to my biggest helper my wife, Pat, who does so much behind the scenes to make all our ANZAC Services so special, from typing and printing programs, sourcing rosemary and stage equipment, sending invitations to dignitaries and much more. This year she spent hours crocheting poppies to make an ANZAC tribute sign, an ongoing project.

Wreaths were laid by;

• Lucy Wicks - MP Robertson

• Adam Crouch - State Member Terrigal

• Ann Charlton - Labor candidate Robertson

• Jane Smith - Mayor Central Coast Council

• Zoe Vella and Conor Hodgkinson – MacMasters Beach SLSC Club Boy and Girl

• Josie Wood and Denise Lawrence – MacMasters Beach Ladies Club

• Hollie Whormsley – School Captain, Kincumber Public School

• Barbara Wills – MacMasters Beach Progress Association

• Tess McCullough – Captain, MacMasters Beach Rural Fire Brigade

• Trevor Halls – MacMasters Beach Garden Club

The last thank you is to all who attended this special commemoration – ‘Lest We Forget’.

CommunityThe club continues to welcome each of the MacMasters Beach Garden Club, Bridge Club and Ladies Social Club. The club is proud of its involvement with the community generally and these clubs which provide material support to the club and for which the club extends its thanks.

The club sincerely thanks the community for its general and financial support, particularly during the annual door knock in January each year.

Without our sponsors and donors the club would not be able to continue as it does. The club extends its sincere thanks to all of them and the community and looks forward to the continuation of the relationship. Some of the club’s particular sponsors and supporters are identified on the back page of this report.

To you all – thank you again.
