Bangladesh
• Major religion - Islam (Muslim)
• is home to 156 million people
• it is a little smaller than the state of Iowa (which has about 3 million people)
Pedicabs (bicycle taxis) are a popular mode of transportation in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh - obstacles• very poor country
• this area is often hit by cyclones (hurricane)and tidal waves, which causes severe flooding
• During the rainy season, overflowing waters often flood farms and ruin crops - making life even more difficult

• was ruled by Great Britian, until 1947. In 1947, it broke off into East & West Pakistan (even though it was separated by 1,000 miles)
• East Pakistan became Bangladesh.

• ¾ of the people practice Buddhism; rest practice Hinduism
• most people farm wheat, rice, corn, and barley OR they tend to livestock

• gained independence from India and Great Britain in 1947
Muslim rituals, such as group prayer meetings, play an important part in the everyday lives of most Pakistanis. About 97 per cent of the nation's people are Muslims.

• Indus River is an important landform
The Khyber Pass is the easiest land route between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The pass cuts through the Safed Koh mountains, which are part of the Hindu Kush range. This part of the Khyber Pass is near Peshawar, Pakistan.

• Formerly known as Ceylon ~ it’s the island off the coast of India, in the Bay of Bengal, and is about the size of West Virginia
• People here are called Sinhalese
• Religion: most people practice Buddhism, as well as Hindu & Islam

• Geography: It has mountains in the center, plains along the edges, and a rainforest in the southwest corner.

Maldives• Smallest country in South Asia
• made up of 1,200 islands; only 210 of the islands have people living on them.
• No island is larger than 5 square miles. Picture below is of Male’ - the capital of the Maldives.
Maldives• Fishing is the main source of income
• Tourism is another big source of income. Recently built an underwater hotel ~ $2,500/night
• Religion: Sunni Muslims ~ you may quietly practice other personal religions, however there are no other places of worship available.
