Retention/Promotion(G.5)Veryfewdecisionswemakeaboutchildrenaremoreimportantthanrecommendationstopromoteortoretainastudent.Whenaschoolacceptsastudent,thatschoolacceptstheresponsibilityforprovidingappropriateinstructiontohelpthestudentachievetheprescribedgoals.Ifthestudentsuccessfullyachievestheprogram’sobjectives,thestudentprogressestothenextlevel.Testing,diagnosis,andactualperformance,however,mayindicatethatsomestudentscannotfollowtheschool’scompletecourseofstudy.Theprincipalandschoolfacultydevelopforeachofthesestudentsaspecialprogram,basedontheschool’sregularprogram,whichfollowstheNewYorkStateStandardsandArchdiocesanEssentialLearnings.Acopyofthestudent’smodifiedprogramisretainedinthestudent’sfile.Conferencesmustbeheldwiththeparentsperiodicallytoinformthemofthespecificdemandsofthisprogramandon-goingprogress.Therefore,thedecisiontoretainastudentpresupposesthattheschoolhasdoneeverythingtohelpthestudentachievesuccess,andthestudentstillhasnotmadesatisfactoryprogress.Ifastudentisbeingconsideredforretention,teachersmustbegindiscussingthispossibilityearlyintheschoolyearwiththeprincipal.Parentconferencesmustbeheldperiodically,andnotificationofthepossibilityofretentionmustbemadenolaterthanmid-January,withwrittennotationhavingbeenmadeonthereportcard.Althoughtheteacherconsultswiththeprincipal,thefinaldecisionforretainingastudentrestswiththeprincipal. AfterSchoolProgramAnafterschoolprogramisavailabletoparents.Aslongasastudentisengagedinschoolsponsoredprogramsoractivities,thestudentisexpectedtofollowschoolpolicy.Directorsofindividualactivitiesmayalsoissuerulesofbehavior,whichrecognizethespecialnatureofnon-classroomactivities.Ininstanceswherestudentsarepickedup,parentsareexpectedtomakearrangementstopickuptheirchildrenattheendoftheprogramoractivity.StudentswillbereleasedonlytoaparentorapersonpreviouslyspecifiedINWRITINGbytheparent.Programfeesareexpectedtobepaidinfulluponbeinginvoiced.Pastduebalanceswillresultinyourchildnotbeingallowedtoparticipateintheprogramuntiltheiraccountsarebroughtuptodate.AnnouncementsInformationalannouncementsarehandledthroughtheschoolP.A.system.CourteousattentionisexpectedwhenanymessageispresentedovertheP.A.system,especiallywhenprayersaresaid.Allannouncementsmustbewritten,broughttotheofficeandapprovedbytheprincipal.Attendance(E.5,E.6)ExcusedAbsence:Achildislegallyabsentfromschoolforthefollowingreasons:sickness,sicknessordeathinthefamily,impassableroadsorextremeweather.Allotherabsencesareunexcused.Lateness:Achildshouldcometoschooleventhoughhe/shemaybelate.Alllatenessisrecordedandmarkedonthereportcard.Parentswillbeconsultedaboutchroniclateness,andthechildmayberequiredtomakeuptimemissed.Whenthechildreturnstoschoolfromanabsence,acompletedabsenceformmustbegiventotheteacher(SeeAppendix).Thisformisdistributedatthebeginningoftheschoolyearandcontainsappropriatespacesforthechild’sname,dateofabsence,class,reasonforabsence,andthesignatureofaparentorguardian.DoctorordentalappointmentsshouldbescheduledforafterschooloronSaturdays.Familyvacationsarenottobeplannedforthosedayswhenschoolisinsession.Theschoolprovidesfamilieswithanannualcalendartoensurethatdoesnothappen.Ifitisnecessaryforachildtobedismissedduringtheschoolday,theparentoradult(mustbe18yearsofageorolder)chosenbytheparentMUSTcometotheschoolforthechild.Theschoolmustbeinformedaheadoftimeaboutsuchoccurrences.Whenachildisabsent,parentsarerequiredtophonetheschoolby9:00A.M.

BusesBusingisprovidedwithina15-milelimittostudentsfromtheirresidence.Thepublicschooldistrictwherethestudentresidesprovidesandmanagesthisservice.Ifastudentistotakeadifferentbusfromschool,anotemustbesubmittedtotheprincipalatthebeginningoftheschoolday.ToobtainstudenttransportationinschooldistrictsoutsideofNewYorkCity,parentsmustfilerequestswiththedistrictinwhichtheylivebyApril1oftheprecedingschoolyearorwithin30daysofmovingtothedistrict.Parentsmustcontacttheirlocalpublicschooldistricttodeterminetheireligibility.Studentsandparentsshouldconsiderridingontheschoolbusasaprivilegeandanextensionoftheschool.Thus,studentsaretodemonstratearespectful,Christian,andsafety-consciousattitudeatalltimesonthebus.
• Studentsshouldobeythedriverandmonitorsatalltimes.
• Studentsshoulddonothingtocauseannoyancesordistractiontothedriver,asthisplacesthesafetyofallindanger.
• Incasesofextremeorpersistentmisbehavior,theschoolwillworkinconsultationwith

• AllinstitutionsandprogramsoftheArchdiocesewillcomplywiththeSafeEnvironmentPoliciesoftheArchdiocese.
• TheDepartmentofEducationhasdevelopedacurriculumforthechildreninourparishesandschools,entitled"Right,Safe,GoodRelationships",whichprovidesage-appropriateinstructioninchildsexualabuse.Thelessonsinthiscurriculummustbegivenannuallytoallchildreninallgrades.

• Parentsreservetherighttoremovetheirchildrenfromtheclasses.Theschooladministrationshouldtakecaretocauseaslittleembarrassmentofthesestudentsaspossible.
• Ifparentschoosenottohavetheirchildparticipateinthesafeenvironmentclasses,theparentswillbeofferedtrainingmaterials,andwillbeaskedtosignaformacknowledgingthatthematerialsweremadeavailabletothem.Thisformwillbemaintainedintherecordsoftheschool.Iftheparentsdeclinetosignsuchaform,anotationofthiswillbemadeinarecordmaintainedbytheschool.
ChildAbuseLaws(C.6)UnderNYSlaw,schoolpersonnelarelegallyobligedtoreportanysuspectedcasesofchildabuseorneglecttotheproperagency.Insoreporting,noallegationismadeagainstaparentorcaregiver.Rather,itisajudgmentbytheschoolthatthechildmaybepresentingsignsofabuseorneglect.ChildCustody(E.28)Atthetimeofschoolentryoratanyothertimewhenachangeincustodystatus/arrangementsoccurs,itistheresponsibilityoftheparent(s)toprovidetheprincipalwithacopyofthelegaldocumentfromtheparentforanystudentforwhichthereisalegalcustodyagreementorforanystudentnotresidingwithhis/herparent.Schoolcommunicationwiththeappropriateguardianisessential.Accordingly:
• Custodialparentsmustidentifyinwritingotheradultswhomayhaveaccesstoinformationregardingtheirchild.
• Non-custodialparentsmayreceiveinformation(whenrequested)regardingthechildunlessspecificdocumentationtothecontraryisprovidedinthelegalcustodyagreement.
Non-custodialparentsmaypickupachildonlyifwrittenpermissionhasbeengrantedbythecustodialparent.Communication(H.3,H.4)Since,asparents,youarethechild’sfirstteachers,youareourpartnersineducation.Therefore,regularcommunicationwithyouisanessentialpartofyourchild’sschoolexperience.Scheduledparentconferencesallowteachersandparentstodiscussstudentachievementaswellastodevelopmeanstoassiststudentsinareasofdifficulty.

Aparentmayrequestameetingwithateacheratanytimebysimplysendinganotetotheteacherinquestionandtheteacherwillarrangeforthismeetingoutsideclasstimeatamutuallyconvenienttime.Themeetingshouldtakeplaceintheclassroomorsomeplacethatensuresprivacy;neverinahallwayoronthestreet.Aparentwhoisrefusedsuchameetingshouldnotifytheprincipal.Parent-teacherconferenceswillbescheduledeachyearinconjunctionwithreportcarddistributiontoprovideanopportunityforin-depthdiscussionofstudentgrowth.Parent-teacherconferencesarerequiredattheendofthefirstmarkingperiod.Teachersareexpectedtobereasonablyavailabletoparentsthroughouttheschoolyearinordertokeepopenthelinesofcommunicationinthebestinterestofthestudents.Confidentiality(G.3)Thereisaprofessional,legalandmoralethicthatrequiresallpersonstosafeguardallstudentinformationofaprivilegednature.Itisimperativethatsuchinformationberegardedasasacredtrust.
• Ifthereisevidenceofknowledgethatcouldimpactthehealthorsafetyofanyperson,theteacherhastheresponsibilitytosharetheinformationwiththeprincipal.
• UnderSection423oftheChildProtectiveServicesAct,schoolofficialsarerequiredtoreportwhentheyhavereasonablecausetosuspectthatachildcomingbeforethemintheirprofessionalorofficialcapacityisanabusedormaltreatedchild(SeesectiononChildAbuse).
Therulesthatgovernprivilegedinformationapply,aswell,toanypersonaloracademicinformationthatisdiscoveredthroughdailyclassroominstructionorothersocialinteractionwithstudents,parentsorpeers.Always,thesenseofconfidentialityshouldprevail.ContactswiththeMedia(H.2)Parentshavetherighttoexcludetheirchildrenfromvideotaping,audiorecording,schoolpictures,otherphotographyorparticipationinvolvingprintedmaterialsorontheinternet.Parentsshouldprovidesuchdocumentationtotheschooloffice;otherwise,theymustfilloutthemediaauthorizationreleaseform.Ifenrolledinaregionalschool,thismediaauthorizationandreleasewasembeddedwithintheonlineregistrationprocess,sothewrittenformisnotrequired,unlessafamilywishestochangetheirpreferenceduringthecourseoftheschoolyear.ParentsofstudentsenrolledinUniversalPre-KindergartenClassesshouldfilloutthemediaauthorizationformattheendofthishandbook.

SummaryStatementOncestudentshavemetthenecessaryadmissionrequirementsandhavebeenaccepted
intheschool,theschoolwarmlywelcomesthesestudentsforthecomingschoolyearandwillstrive toprovide themwitha solidCatholic spiritual andacademiceducation ina supportivelearningenvironment. Students andparentsmust alwaysbemindful that attendanceat theschool is by invitation. It is not a “right” because this is a private school. In order to protect its standards of scholarship, discipline and character, the school
reserves the right, and studentsandparentsorguardians concede to the school the right torequirethewithdrawalofanystudentatanytime,foranyreasondeemedsufficientinthesolediscretionof the school and its administrators. By the student’s attendanceat the school, astudent and his or her parents or guardians acknowledge the important obligations andrestrictionscontainedinthishandbookandagreetobeboundbythetermsofthishandbook.
Studentsattendingtheschoolrelinquishcertainrightstheymightotherwisebeentitled
toiftheywereattendingapublicschool.Forexample,astudent’sfreedomofspeechislimitedinmanyimportantrespectshereatourschool.Speech,eitherwrittenororal,contrarytotheRomanCatholicfaith,theteachingsoftheChurchorthedirectivesofthelocalBishoporOrdinaryis prohibited, as is any other speech which is contrary or disruptive to the philosophy andpurposesofourschool. Anotherimportantrightallstudentsattheschoolsurrenderinvolvessearchesandseizures.Schooladministratorsmaysearchastudent’spersonandbelongingsifthere isa reasonablebelief, in thesoleopinionof theschooladministrator, thatcontraband,illegalsubstancesorinappropriateobjectsarebeingconcealed.Anyunauthorizeditemsfoundmaybeseized. Additionally,studentdesksandlockers,whichareatalltimesunderthejointcontroloftheschoolandthestudenttowhomthedeskor lockerhasbeenassigned,maybesearchedbyschooladministratorsatanytime,foranyreasonorfornoreasonatall.Studentsshouldhaveabsolutelynoexpectationofprivacywithregardtoanyitemintheirdesksorlockers.
Anotherimportantrightthatastudentandhisorherparentsorguardiansgiveupwhen
theydecidetohaveastudentattendthisschoolistherighttosuetheschool,theparish,theCatholic School Region Corporation, or the Archdiocese of New York, and/or any individualsactingonbehalfoftheschool,suchastheschooladministrators,teachers,stafforanyoftheiragents foranymatter relating toacademicordisciplinarydecisionsorothermatterscoveredwithinthishandbook.Eachstudentandhisorherparentsorguardians,bytheiracceptanceof

enrollmentattheschool,agreetoandaccepttheschool’sruleandpolicythatstudents,parentsand guardians may not bring any civil action in any local, state or federal court or in anyadministrative agency or body to challenge any school decision on academic or disciplinarymatters,includinganydecisionrelatingtotherules,regulations,proceduresorprogramscoveredwithinthishandbook.Studentsandparentsorguardiansagreethatanychallengetoanyschoolacademic or disciplinary action or relating to the rules, regulations, procedures or programscoveredinthishandbookmayonlybechallengedorappealedwithinthehierarchyoftheschool,subjecttothelimitationscontainedinthishandbook. This includesanydecisionrelatingtoastudent’senrollmentattheschoolorterminationofthatenrollment.
Whileanystudentandhisorherparentsorguardiansareofcoursefreetoconsultwith
legal counsel regarding any school decision taken with respect to a student, the schoolemphasizes that students and parents or guardians are not permitted to have legal counselpresentduringanymeetingswithschooladministrators.Schooladministratorsarenotobligatedtomeetwithlegalcounselatanytime.
Thereareseveralgroundsfordisciplinaryactionorexpulsionsetforthinthe“Discipline

Theuseoftheinternetisaprivilege,notaright,andinappropriateuseorviolationofanyofthefollowingstandardswillresultinseriousconsequencesandcouldresultinexpulsionfromtheschool.
1. Useofthecomputeratschoolislimitedtoschoolrelatedactivities.Internetusersareexpectedtobehaveresponsiblyinaccessingandviewinginformationthatispertinenttothemissionoftheschool.
2. Vandalismandotherinfractionsofschoolpolicywhileusingtheinternetwillresultinimmediatecancellationofprivilegesalongwithdisciplinaryaction.
3. AfterSchool/HomeAccessrequiresstudentstofollowthesamestudentexpectationsasstatedinthe“DisciplineCodeforStudentConduct”and“HarassmentPolicies”inthestudenthandbook.
4. Studentsmustabidebythegenerallyacceptedrulesofnetworketiquettebothinsideandoutsideschool.
5. Studentsareresponsiblefortheirexplorationsontheinternetandaresubjecttotheconsequencesoftheschool’sdisciplinepolicy.
6. Studentsmustsignacontractindicatingtheirunderstandingandacceptanceoftheschool’sguidelines(seeparent/studenthandbook).
7. ParentsmustgivetheirpermissionfortheirchildtousetheinternetforeducationalpurposesasanindividualbysigningtheContractFormonceconditionsareclearlyunderstood.Parentsalsohavetheoptionofdenyingpermissionfortheirchildtousetheinternetindependentlyatschool
