Dear Resident:

On behalf of my colleagues on the Town Board, I would like to wish you a Happy New Year and thank you for doing your part to help Babylon maintain our fantastic reputation as an environmental leader on Long Island.

This calendar has everything that you need to know about garbage, yard waste and recyclable pickup. See the months of March and July for complete pickup information. Make sure to take advantage of our S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) Days on April 8th and October 14th so that household hazardous wastes are safely disposed of. For more information about S.T.O.P. Days, please see the month of April.

As you know, new regulations from New York State were put into place last year regarding electronic waste (e-waste). Please review the top of the March page for information about how to now properly dispose of your e-waste.

Inside you will also find important information about Town of Babylon services and programs, as well as exciting news from our community. Make sure to take a look and see what is available to you as a resident.

I thank you for doing your part to help protect Babylon’s environment. Have a great 2017!

Sincerely,

CouncilmanTom Donnelly

Last July, thousands of bicyclists braved the heat and made their way through the Town of Babylon to raise money for injured servicemembers as part of the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride. The 25 mile ride starts at Town Hall in Lindenhurst and winds through the Town, crossing Robert Moses State Bridge and ending at Overlook Beach. Last year’s ride proved to be a great success, raising over $75,000 for our wounded servicemen and women.

Step into the past at the Town of Babylon History Museum, located in Old Town Hall on Main Street in Babylon Village. The history museum displays revolving exhibits that feature different aspects of Town history. The museum also includes interactive displays that enable residents to view historical photographs and features. The Town has also created a permanent exhibit by reconstructing the original jail cells in the basement of Old Town Hall that were once used by the former Babylon Police Department. For hours and information, check the Town of Babylon website or call (631) 587-3750.

New Spots Around Town Adopted, Cleaned Up

For the past several years, dedicated and community-minded students from Western Suffolk BOCES have participated in the Town’s Beautification Program. The students adopted the main entrance to Tanner Park in Copiague as well as the flower beds that adorn the front of the Tanner Park Senior Citizens Center, where they maintain and beautify the sites. Each May and October, the students conduct an extensive beautification effort that includes weeding, cleaning up the flower beds and planting colorful seasonal annuals and perennials for all residents to enjoy.

Councilwoman Gordon is pictured below with several of her students from Western Suffolk BOCES, following a beautification effort at the entrance of Tanner Park.

The Town of Babylon Beautification Program continues to keep our community clean and beautiful, and with the help of various local civic organizations, several new locations in the Town have been “adopted” for cleanup and beautification purposes. These included the “North Babylon Welcomes You” sites at the corner of Hubbards Path and Belmont Avenue (above) and the corner of Sylvan Avenue and Deer Park Avenue (below, left). In addition, the local chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority adopted Wyandanch Park and conducted a beautification effort that included a cleanup and the planting of numerous colorful mums adorning the “Welcome to Wyandanch Park” sign housed in a large wall stone planter (below).

The Four Chaplains included Lt. George L. Fox, Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Lt. John P. Washington, and Lt. Clark V. Poling, who all served on the S.S. Dorchester, a United States ship that was hit by a German U-boat torpedo during WWII. They handed out life jackets, including their own, as their ship sank. From The Town of Babylon

The Town of Babylon cordially invites you to join us for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Friday, December 1st at 7:00 PM. A mailbox will be available to receive your kids’ letters addressed to Santa at the North Pole and Santa himself will be joining us to take pictures with the little ones. Children will be able to enjoy free and warm refreshments.

Happy Holidays

During the holidays, Babylon Town Hall proudly serves as a drop-off location for the United States Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” program. The program collects new, unwrapped toys and donates them to families in need. If you would like to donate to “Toys for Tots”, or would like more information, please contact Councilman Tom Donnel ly ’s off ice at (631) 957-3081.
