FROM THE PRINCIPAL From the Principal

Welcome back everybody to a busy term ahead! Hope you all managed some quality time with your

families over the break. Over the next few weeks we have athletics carnivals, NAIDOC activities,

excursions and Kingsthorpe Capers!

Last semester, 120 students attended school over 95% of the time – that equates to a maximum of

only 4 days’ absence. This semester, it would be awesome if we could improve our attendance rates

to an even higher rate. Our “Early Bird Reading Club” continues in the library each morning from

8:30am – students can come to the library to complete homework, practice sight words, read a book

or be read to. As a bonus this term - students of the week will also be presented with a book with

their certificate on parade to help foster a love of learning and to help promote reading for

enjoyment.

P&C COMMITTEE CHANGES

At our last P&C Meeting (in the last week of Term Two) – a new executive committee was elected. I

would like to thank all outgoing committee members for their service, support and commitment to the

school whilst in their positions, with special mention to Amanda Evans who has stepped down from

the fundraising committee (and has also held other positions on the P&C previously). Amanda has

done a lot of work behind the scenes and has been responsible for organising the Superhero

Stampede amongst a range of other things. Thankyou Amanda for your contribution and

commitment to the school and students – it has been greatly appreciated. Enjoy the extra time you

now have to spend with your family.

SCHOOL OPINION SURVEYS

The annual School Opinion Survey will be conducted between the 31st of July and close on the 25

th

August 2017. All families (previously a sample of families), school staff, and a representative

sample of students will be invited to take part and share their opinions about what this school does

well and how this school can improve.

Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be sent home with students in Week 4 — these

are not linked to individuals, and you cannot be identified in the survey results that will be reported

back to the school, or by the department.

The online survey will remain open until the 25th August and should only take less than ten minutes

to complete.

ISAAC HOUSE – SPORTS CAPTAIN

We congratulate Isabella Bartley who has been elected as House Captain for

Isaacs House after a vacancy was opened up after Kaylin’s departure.

Isabella will join Liam as Isaac house leaders for the upcoming Athletics

carnivals this term and swimming carnivals in Term Four. Isabella has great

leadership qualities and is an excellent role model for other students. Isabella

is looking forward to the challenge ahead and we have every confidence she

will do a fantastic job. Well done Isabella!

This term, Kingsthorpe SS will be implementing as part of the National Curriculum, the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety unit to all students from Prep to Year 6. The units are aimed to teach children about personal safety and awareness, including cybersafety and phone safety, by focusing on three key safety messages: Recognise, React and

Report.

It also provides advice to parents about how safety messages can be reinforced at home and suggests some suitable resources to use with children. Chappy Chatters

During the holidays, we watched an old movie called “The Sandlot” (well, old

meaning that I watched it when I was a kid). The movie is set in the 60’s, and it’s

about a bunch of ratbag kids playing baseball and experiencing the many

misadventures of youth. I loved it as a young lass.

But this time, I watched it with new eyes. While my kids laughed along with what I would have

laughed along with when I was young, I saw something else.

The story covers a new kid in town trying to fit in with the other kids. This new kid is kind of

nerdy and out of touch. All the sandlot kids think he is a “loser.” All but one… the leader. This

one kid displays a beautiful acceptance of the dorky kid who knows nothing about baseball, and

befriends him. Following their leader, the rest of the crew end up accepting him also…. And the

adventure begins.

I found it sooo heart-warming, even to the point that I almost shed a tear at the humanity of this

fictional 12-year-old kid. It only took one person to acknowledge this new kid as more than just a

nerd, but as a person, and a person perhaps worth knowing.

It reminded me of the power we all have to positively affect someone’s life… if we choose to. A

smile, a friendly conversation, a selfless act of kindness, can make the world of difference to any-

one really, let alone someone who is misunderstood and marginalised. And it only takes one per-

son to do it!

What a beautiful opportunity we all have to contribute to a better world.

CALLING ON ALL BUDDING ARTISTS We have a special opportunity to showcase your amazing artwork! We have lots of artistic and creative Kingsthorpe community members and would love to showcase your work! We are having our exciting Kingsthorpe State School Art Exhibition and Mega Prize Draw Auction on the 27th October! Your contribution will be helping our Kingsthorpe State School students by putting air conditioning in our classrooms to help them learn. We don’t want our kids sweltering in 43˚C heat again next summer, so let’s get proactive and raise the $50,000 needed to air condition our school. Please contact for more information –
