IMPORTANT NOTICE

For quite some time now MASA has had two websites as we transition away

from www.masa.on.net towards masaonline.org.au. The old website has very

little information on it and no longer has links to forms as we plan its demise.

The new website is linked to our membership and events and in the future

there will even be online shopping. For Annual Conference and Primary

Conference this year we have trialled online registration and this will become

available for many more MASA events in time. We are a small organisation

and projects like these take talent; we are very fortunate to have the support

of Andrew Fergusson to achieve these improvements.

Be prepared for a great event.

MASA Junior Secondary Mathematics Enrichment Project 2017

Developing Powerful Learners

Entries due Friday August 25th

Jointly sponsored by The Mathematical Association of SA Inc.

and

The Department for Education and Child Development (DECD)

Teaching and Learning Services

The Mathematics Enrichment Project is an open-ended mathematical investigation with the

student’s choice of topic

Students should aim to choose an original and novel concept. Real world problems

are often most interesting.

Think about how they are going to gain information, collect data and analyse their

results.

They can work as an individual, a member of a group (maximum of five students) or as part

of a class.

Their project must have a title and all references and assistance (including teachers

and parents) must be acknowledged.

They should aim to interest their audience.

NMSS is a two week residential school held each January at the

Australian National University for mathematically gifted and talented

senior high school students.

Dates for next year: 7-20 January 2018

History and Purpose The NMSS was established under the joint educational sponsorship of the ANU and the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers in 1969 by the late Professor A.L. Blakers AM of the University of Western Australia. Almost 3,000 students from all states and territories around Australia have attended the NMSS.

Academic Program

The main activity of NMSS is an in-depth study of three or four different areas of mathematics. Each is very challenging and will extend every student. On the other hand, the program is non-competitive and very much hands-on. The emphasis is on doing mathematics, not just on listening to someone else talking about it. appreciate the opportunity to speak to your Year 9 to 12 students about the engineering

profession.

To arrange a school visit, please email your contact details to [email protected]

A wealth of energy education resources are also available at www.energy4me.org to assist

Who is SPE?

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit, professional organisation with 168,000

members worldwide. The local South Australian Section (SPE-SA) has 500 members and is run by a

team of enthusiastic volunteers. SPE’s vision is to enable the sharing of technical knowledge

amongst its members, to meet the world’s growing energy needs, in a safe and environmentally

responsible manner.

As part of our commitment to the local community, SPE-SA actively supports the promotion of

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) based learning. We see this as an

investment in the next generation of talented students who will become South Australia’s future

engineers and leaders.

SPE-SA has been an avid supporter of MASA for the past two decades, through sponsorship of the

School Mathematics Competition. Over the past 30 years our volunteers have also been actively

engaged with the broader community via school visits, organisation of student / teacher workshops

and Science Alive!

on October 10th.

MASA has become an ambassador for this week so we urge you to register your students to take part and

make it a truly amazing first for mathematics.
