Tucker. Upon receiving the Planes of Fame Achievement in Aviation Award at the gala, Tucker expressed joy over his 40-year career in aviation, and made particular reference to the late Robert “Bob” Hoover, another aviation superstar with a history of combat flying, test piloting and aerobatic flying, who was a past recipient of the Achievement in Aviation Award. Sean noted that just a few weeks before Hoover’s death in October 2016, he talked to Bob about re-naming a program started by Sean and his son Eric Tucker the Bob Hoover Academy, a project that Hoover quickly endorsed. Essentially, the non-profit academy inspires at-risk and underserved teens to get engaged in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education through an aviation ground school curriculum and flight training program. Tucker also noted that the Planes of Fame Air Museum is now also preparing to inspire local youth with its Ed Maloney Scholarship Award which, beginning in 2018, will present first and second-place awards to student essay writers in each of five different local high schools in the vicinity of Chino, California. One of the Planes of Fame Air Museum’s major fundraising activities, the 2017 Taste of Flight Gala was centered around a silent auction featuring all sorts of unique aviation memorabilia, art, prize packages, etc. in the museum’s Bob Pond Hangar. While viewing the auction items, invited guests were also able to enjoy wine, beer and spirits tasting; sample gourmet food; view aircraft displays; and have souvenir photos taken of themselves next to a British Supermarine Spitfire fighter plane. Once the activities in the Bob Pond Hangar were concluded, the guests moved on to the museum’s adjacent Edward T. Maloney Hangar to enjoy deserts, a concert by noted smooth jazz guitarist Steve Oliver, the presentation of the Achievement in Aviation Award and the results of the silent auction. This year, centerpieces for the 27 guest tables in the Edward T. Maloney Hangar were hand-built model airplanes. The late Ed Maloney, founder of the Planes of Fame Air Museum, was an avid model airplane builder in his youth, and a serious collector of model airplanes throughout the rest of his life. Many of the models that Ed built and collected are on display in the museum, a number of the models were placed in individual display cases and made available for auction at the 2017 gala. It was a fitting tribute to Ed Maloney, and a great way to wrap up this wonderful event. Top left: Guests were treated to a live concert by smooth jazz artist Steve Oliver. 2017 TASTE OF FLIGHT GALA

The highlight of the 2017 Planes of Fame Air Museum social season, the 11th Annual Taste of Flight Gala on November 18, paid special tribute to aerobatic superstar and aviation ambassador Sean D.

Tucker also noted that the Planes of Fame Air Museum is now also preparing to inspire local youth with its Ed Maloney Scholarship Award which, beginning in 2018, will present first and second-place awards to student

essay writers in each of five different local high schools in the vicinity of Chino, California.

One of the Planes of Fame Air Museum’s major fundraising activities, the 2017 Taste of Flight Gala was centered around a silent auction featuring all sorts of unique aviation memorabilia, art, prize packages, etc. in the museum’s Bob Pond Hangar. While viewing the auction items, invited guests were also able to enjoy wine, beer and spirits tasting; sample gourmet food; view aircraft displays; and have souvenir photos taken of themselves next

to a British Supermarine Spitfire fighter plane.

Maloney Hangar were hand-built model airplanes. of the models were placed in individual display cases and made available for auction at the 2017 gala. It was a fitting tribute to Ed Maloney, and a great way to wrap up this wonderful event.

AROUND THE MUSEUM

Our P-51 Mustangs, P-40 Warhawk, and B-25 Mitchell took part in a special fly-over dedication of a new Veteran’s cemetery near the Great Park, Irvine.

Our M4A1 Sherman tank made quite a boom at the Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942 event in February.

We sent several aircraft, including the P-38 Lightning, P-40 Warhawk, P-51 Mustang, and B-25 Mitchell to

the NAF El Centro Airshow earlier this year.

The USAF F-35 Lightning II demo team performed at the Planes of Fame Airshow for the first time.

We had an incredible total of FIVE Corsairs at the airshow this year including the F4U-1A, two FG-1Ds,

F4U-4, and a F4U-7.

A MUSEUM ON A MISSION

As we enter our 61st year, it seems appropriate that we pull back the curtain to reveal the driving forces behind our efforts. Four cornerstones comprise the mission of the Planes of Fame Air Museum. 1. Preserve aviation history2. Inspire an interest in aviation3. Educate the public4. Honor aviation pioneers and veterans

Everything we do touches on one or more of these cornerstones.

Preservation:Preservation is perhaps the most important

cornerstone of the Museum’s mission. The restoration of historic aircraft to flight

status distinguishes Planes of Fame from other air museums. A number of restoration projects are currently underway, and each requires thousands of dollars and labor hours to complete.

Keeping the collection flying also demands continuous funding. Maintenance, insurance and fuel are all expensive considerations that must be satisfied in order for all of us to enjoy the experience of seeing these aircraft fly.

The Museum also possesses a vast selection of historical artifacts. Each helps the Museum tell the stories important to aviation history. They require meticulous care – proper handling, labeling, and storage as well as careful and secure display.

Our collection of uniforms spans the Great War of 1914-1918 up to the present day. These require temperature controlled and hermetically sealed storage as well as proper display.

Inspiration:We want to remove the shroud of mystery that

surrounds the subject of aviation while instilling an appreciation for the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics that is behind flight. Aeronautics is a complicated subject, and we believe the more an individual knows, the greater their appreciation of the Museum’s collection and aviation in general.

The Aviation Discovery Center is slated for a major renovation. Dedicated to providing “hands-on” experiences related to aviation, the Center currently operates nine stations. Our goal is to expand to 34 unique stations. This major upgrade will integrate new technology and more interactivity.

Our annual Air Show touches thousands with the awe of watching historic aircraft fly and perform. The Air Show has become a continual source of local community pride and we want to continue our role as a good neighbor to our surrounding communities.

Our Youth Programs is a flourishing component to the Museum’s mission. Their successful use of creative aviation-themed arts and crafts projects as well as other special programs, help our younger

guests see aviation as an accessible and fulfilling pastime or career path.

Education:We believe that Education is for everyone

and we strive to make it accessible, concise, and engaging. Education initiatives take many forms at the Planes of Fame Air Museum: , Monthly Living History events , Special events and presentations , Guided tours , School Field Trips , Signage, Displays, and Exhibits , Interactive Learning Activities

Our goal through Education is to enhance the guest experience at the Museum. Self-guided audio tours, new portable classrooms, virtual reality flights in historic aircraft, walk-thru and interactive displays, and a School Bus Grant program are all initiatives underway to make learning a memorable activity at the Museum.

Honor:We remember and appreciate the intellectual

and physical contributions of the men and women who built this industry, as well as the veterans who advanced and preserved it through their sacrifices and dedication. We honor these pioneers and veterans through the presentation of their stories in programs, graphics, displays, and tours.

Our “Achievement in Aviation” award recognizes individuals for their unique and committed dedication to the industry and to history. This award is presented annually at our “Taste of Flight” Gala in November.

Our monthly, “Kilroy Coffee Klatch” provides free admission and presentations to our veterans while enabling them to reach out to their fellow vets.

Future endeavors include partnerships with existing Veteran’s organizations such as “Help Heal Veterans” and “Pictures for Heroes.”

The northernmost portion of the Museum has been reserved for our Korean War Memorial, a permanent 1/3 acre of the Museum campus dedicated to the men and women who served during the Korean conflict.

Thank You for Your HelpThis is only a glimpse at what is currently

ongoing at Planes of Fame Air Museum. Our objective is to continue the legacy and vision of our founder Ed Maloney to make the Museum one of the premier aviation experiences in the world.

These efforts require an ongoing source of financing. Your continued support as a member of the Museum helps us to fulfill our mission. Your ideas, enthusiasm, and financial support is always welcome for any of the Museum’s initiatives. For more information on additional ways to help, contact Brian Finnegan at 909-597-3722, ext. 108.

Membership is the foundation upon which the Museum advances its mission to preserve aviation history. Without our dedicated members, we would be unable to carry on the restoration efforts of historic aircraft and artifacts, present our Living History events and other educational outreach efforts, fly our annual Air Show, and continue to inspire new generations to the wonders of aviation.

The coming year will be an exciting time for the Museum. In addition to our ongoing efforts in preservation, we’re working to expand our educational initiatives while strengthening the many ways we honor our veterans and aviation pioneers. New displays, improved graphics, more engaging activities, and interactive experiences are all part of our future. And we’re looking to partner with some outstanding veteran’s programs.

Along with these endeavors, we’re also enhancing our member’s benefits.

We’re excited about our new quarterly member’s publication, “Contact!” The first issue will be sent to all our current

members soon. Each issue will contain fascinating stories about the aircraft, events, and individuals who helped shape the industry, as well as information about current activities that continue to move aviation forward.

We’ve added some new programming to several levels of our membership tier. These include special events such as “Planes of Fame Cockpit Days.” At these events (we’ve planned three for 2018) you’ll not only learn about a particular aircraft but also get to experience the pilot’s perspective by taking a seat in the cockpit.

We’ve enhanced our Air Show experience for several membership levels including tickets to our VIP chalet and Chairman’s Club.

And because our members are so important to us, we’ll continue to explore new ways to make your membership at Planes of Fame a unique and fantastic value.

Now, more than ever is a great time to be a member of Planes of Fame Air Museum. And with the holiday season upon us, why not consider giving the gift of membership. For more information, contact Liz Esparza at 909-597-3722, ext. 120.

2017 TASTE OF FLIGHT GALA

The highlight of the 2017 Planes of Fame Air Museum social season, the 11th Annual Taste of Flight Gala on November 18, paid special tribute to aerobatic superstar and aviation ambassador Sean D.

Many of the models that Ed built and collected are on display in the museum, a number

of the models were placed in individual display cases and made available for auction at the 2017 gala. It was a fitting tribute to Ed Maloney, and a great way to wrap up this wonderful event.
