Goold: Cardinals missing big bat that makes the offense go

By Derrick Goold St. Louis Post-Dispatch 1 hr ago (20)

CHICAGO • In the past week, the two departed All-Stars the Cardinals have built their most successful recent lineups around have chased history and reveled in a revitalized

present.

Albert Pujols with one mighty swing Saturday night became the ninth player ever with 600 career home runs, and Matt Holliday hit his 12th homer of the season and is one of

the most productive designated hitters in the American League with a .889 OPS. Such gaudy numbers only hint at what two MVP-caliber hitters brought during their tenures at

No. 3 in the Cardinals’ lineup, but illustrate what several talent evaluators believe the current edition has yet to find.

A fear factor.

After a power-mad 2016 and the expiration of Holliday’s contract, the Cardinals purposefully restructured their lineup around a more decentralized offense for this season.

They’re still waiting for it to work. With two of the best leadoff hitters in the game, Dexter Fowler and Matt Carpenter, now in the same lineup, the Cardinals aimed to score with

a steady pressure of baserunners, not a sporadic flex of muscle. General manager John Mozeliak referred to the plan for the first year without Pujols or Holliday as “more

depth than one or two feared hitters.”

They want to put opposing pitchers through a game of “Frogger,” forcing them to leap and scoot out of traffic until … splat! … death by OBP.

“You will see a lot of high pitch counts, a lot of guys working the counts,” LA Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw said. “That’s what you do if you don’t have ‘that guy.’ Carpenter is

that guy. (Jedd) Gyorko, the way he’s swinging the bat, can do damage. But any team brings in a star-caliber player and it lengthens the lineup and it makes everybody else

better. You can unburden that load. Five-hole hitters don’t have to be four-hole hitters. They can be five-hole hitters. It works the way down. You lengthen the lineup when you

have ‘that guy’ in there.”

With less than two months before baseball’s July trade deadline, the Cardinals must weigh whether the lineup they have can be feared or whether they can add a bat that will

be. Or, as one NL scout said, “they need to find a run-producer, someone who gets attention.” The lineup needs a centerpiece to emerge — or arrive.

The Cardinals managed three runs Saturday in a loss to the Chicago Cubs, and the three runs came on two hits – a broken-bat single and Yadier Molina’s solo homer. For the

11th time in their past 17 games the Cardinals scored three or fewer, and they are 3-8 in those games. Opponents scored one run, combined, in those three wins. The roots of

the Cardinals’ offensive issues are three-pronged: the slow starts by a handful of players including igniters Carpenter and Fowler, the fact Holliday’s planned replacement in

left is in Class A, and the difficulty all that has caused stringing together hits. It has been almost two weeks since the Cardinals had more than two hits with runners in scoring

position in a game. They’ve done that only once in their past 18 games.

“A slow start at the top of the lineup from Dexter, a slow start from me, and you’re seeing what not getting on base and not clogging those bases with people does,” said

Carpenter, who is batting .216 to Fowler’s .228. “Even if you don’t have power, if there are guys on base and there’s a good hitter coming up, things happen. Things will

happen.”

Said Mozeliak: “When you look at this lineup it was designed to be a team that was going to go first to third and score runs, and if we’re not doing that …”

Internally, the Cardinals insist that that they will.

The three hitters the Cardinals planned to have atop their lineup — Fowler, Aledmys Diaz, and Carpenter — are all off to uncharacteristically slow first trimesters. Each has a

batting average on balls in play (BABIP) that is significantly below even their career low, like .241 to .307 for Carpenter. In 2016, that trio combined for a .381 on-base

percentage. So far this season, it’s .319. Diaz is at .288. The Cardinals have had one of the least productive top three spots in the order in the majors. Even the grind is gone.

Carpenter is fifth in baseball in pitches per plate appearance (4.44). Fowler is 50th. The only other Cardinal in the top 80 is at High-A Palm Beach, Randal Grichuk.

“If seven guys have historically low career years for themselves, then, yeah, it’s not going to change,” Carpenter said. “If five of the seven go back to their norms we’re going

to be fine.”

Just as the Cubs are expected to shop for starting pitching as the trade deadline nears to fortify their rotation, the Cardinals are seen as a team that could augment their

lineup. Multiple sources said to expect more pitching to be available than bats, though two scouts and two other evaluators had a few hitters in mind who could move. The

Cardinals remain reluctant to spend on a short-term rental, which could limit interest if Kansas City shops first baseman Eric Hosmer or third baseman Mike Moustakas or the

White Sox deal Todd Frazier. It’s possible no one appeals enough to the Cardinals to reshuffle the infield to make a fit. Cincinnati shortstop Zack Cozart is somewhat similar.

A batter like Toronto’s Josh Donaldson is a more attractive commodity — a former MVP with another year of control and a high salary — but the Blue Jays may not be

motivated sellers. Outfielder Marcell Ozuna has two years of control, is in the midst of a career season, and could be Miami’s chip to play before a rebuild. He would draw

interest.

“That’s not as simple as you try to make it out to be,” Mozeliak cautioned Friday when asked about going outside for offense. “Obviously our offense has not been overly

productive, but I think it’s a little early to hit the panic button.”

The question that lingers is what kind of lineup they can be.

“I think that question is a good question,” Mozeliak said. “I think it’s a question that is hard to answer because I don’t think we’ve ever really seen this team click offensively.”

For more than a decade, that click came from an All-Star in the middle before both found better offers and the ability to DH in the American League. From 2003 to 2016,

Pujols and Holliday combined for 7,240 at-bats at the No. 3 spot. Pujols had 370 of his 599 homers there. That is enviable and rare stability. The player with the third-most

home runs from No. 3 since 2003 is Carpenter, with nine. During Pujols’ run, from 2003-2011, that spot in the order never ranked lower than fifth in the majors in OPS.

Holliday ranked in the top 10 in his first three seasons before injuries and a fade. Last year, as Holliday missed time and struggled, the .713 OPS from the No. 3 spot ranked

27th. This year, at .749 OPS, it ranks 24th.

Such bona fide MVP-level fulcrums are few and treasured and hard to find on the market. The Cubs, who the Cardinals are chasing and facing this weekend, have two, Kris

Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. Cincinnati has Joey Votto. Colorado has Nolan Arenado and a cast of thumpers.

“I think against guys who make a lot of contact — a lineup of gnats, like you said — the pitcher can miss their spots and get away with it,” said Rockies first baseman Mark

Reynolds. “Maybe they’ll give up a base hit. Pitchers facing our lineup have to concentrate because one through eight we can take you yard. Look at (vs. the Cardinals).

Single. Double. Double. (Tommy) Pham clipped one. There was traffic all night. They couldn’t get the big hit to open the game up. That kind of lineup puts a lot of pressure on

the defense. I think it puts a lot of pressure on the pitcher having a guy who can take you yard at any time.”

The Cardinals have seen flashes of the offense they want to have. In consecutive games against LA starter Kenta Maeda, Fowler led off with a single, Pham followed with a

walk, and both scored on a two-run hit by that day’s cleanup hitter. Encores have been fleeting. Mozeliak mentioned the team’s 6-0 road trip through Atlanta and Miami as the

Page 15: 2017 St. Louis Cardinals - Los Angeles Angelslosangeles.angels.mlb.com/documents/1/2/8/234321128/Reds_vs_Cardinals... · 59 Mike Mayers R R 6-3 200 25 12/6/1991 Grove City, OH 64

time the offense generated momentum. It worked like manager Mike Matheny often says: “grinding” and “relentless.” They scored 45 runs in six games. And they did that

without the need of adding a middle-order hitter.

Though they did add.

That was the same trip when Pham arrived and rookie Magneuris Sierra raced up from High-A, and both brought something that spurs any lineup built for death by OBP:

speed. “For me, this is a club that still is searching for what we truly are,” Mozeliak said. “We’re really clicking from the rotation standpoint. Will the offense support it?”

And how long can they wait on the answer?

Slam sinks Leake after Matheny passes on using bullpen

By Derrick Goold St. Louis Post-Dispatch 8 hrs ago (11)

CHICAGO • Whether it’s the groundballs that got through, the jersey that fluttered just enough, or the fastball that didn’t, all the clues used to figure out whodunit this time for

the Cardinals lead back to one culprit.

Past performance is definitely an indicator of present decisions.

With three lefthanded relievers in the bullpen, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny elected to not use any of them against Cubs scuffling slugger Kyle Schwarber with the bases

loaded in the decisive moment of Saturday’s 5-3 loss at Wrigley Field. Kevin Siegrist, warmed and ready, has had better success against righthanded batters. Tyler Lyons is

new to the role. Brett Cecil, paid handsomely for exactly that situation, has been awry against lefties this season. Siegrist and Cecil have both felt Schwarber’s sting.

Matheny stuck with starter Mike Leake and his league-leading ERA, and the result landed in the bleachers. Schwarber’s first career grand slam reversed a Cardinals’ two-run

lead and became another late-inning loss. Asked if his lefties were pitching better would he have made a different call, Matheny leaned forward in his chair.

“I don’t know,” the manager answered. “(Leake) is at 96 pitches. He just came off a really easy inning. Been making good pitches. Those were good pitches. There are times

when a guy has been good for you all season, so you give him a chance to get out of his own mess. Just a shame it couldn’t work.”

Schwarber entered the game batting ninth with a .163 average blinking back at him from the videoboards at Wrigley, but with one swing he changed more than the

scoreboard.

The pennants flying above it will need to be reordered.

The win returned to the Cubs to .500, at 27-27, and dropped the Cardinals behind them in the standings and back beneath .500, at 26-27. It’s a place they’ve been before,

and it happened as a result of a game they’ve seen all too often. Since last facing the Cubs and vaulting to 21-15, the Cardinals have lost 12 of 17 games. In seven of those

12 losses they have had an early lead. Saturday was the fifth time they’ve blown a lead in the seventh inning or later.

The hit the Cardinals have been craving came in the sixth inning as Yadier Molina’s first home run at Wrigley since 2013 gave Leake added breathing room. In previous

games — two 3-0 leads misplaced to the Dodgers and one to the Red Sox, a 2-0 lead lost to the Cubs and another to the Giants — the Cardinals have been lacking a run that

extended the lead. They scored and squatted, sometimes on quicksand. Molina’s sixth homer of the season widened the lead to 3-1. Before the Cubs caught up with them,

the team the Cardinals have been did.

Fresh off a five-pitch perfect inning, Leake got two groundballs in the seventh that each went for singles: one past novice first baseman Jose Martinez, and another under the

glove of third baseman Jhonny Peralta. With two outs, Leake clipped former Cardinal Jon Jay’s jersey with a fastball, just enough to load the bases with a hit batter.

“We’ve benefited from him many times getting hit by a pitch,” Matheny said.

Matheny had Siegrist warming in the bullpen, presumably to face righthanded batter Kris Bryant, who is one-for-13 in his career against the lefty. Cubs manager Joe Maddon

said he would have stuck with Schwarber against Siegrist because “he’s kind of a reverse guy.” There was clear reluctance to go to any lefty against Schwarber when

compared to Leake. Although only one of Schwarber’s eight homers this season have come off a lefty pitcher, that one came off Cecil. Schwarber has a .141 average against

lefties this season, but of his four career homers against lefties, two have come off Cardinals relievers. The one off Siegrist still sits above a Wrigley Field video board; the

other off Cecil flipped a game earlier this season.

Two righthanded pitchers Matheny would have gone to in that spot — Matt Bowman or Trevor Rosenthal — were unavailable due to recent use, the manager said. Cecil threw

a scoreless eighth, retiring two lefthanded batters.

When Matheny visited him on the mound, Leake acknowledged the decision “could have gone both ways.”

He wanted a chance to decide the game. He got it.

Schwarber hit the first pitch 403 feet to the seats and on that one swing Leake gave up as many runs as he had in any previous start this season.

“I thought it was my guy,” said Leake (5-4), who allowed five runs in 6 2/3 innings. “It shows you how fast things can change. It was where we wanted to go (with the pitch). It

was slightly elevated and slightly on the plate too much. Obviously it was off by a few inches.”

The Cardinals built a 2-0 lead on Friday out of Dexter Fowler’s leadoff homer and rookie Magneuris Sierra’s RBI single. Their 2-0 lead Saturday came from familiarity. Cubs

starter Jon Lester’s hesitance throwing to first base is no longer a secret, and neither was the Cardinals’ approach against him. A series of show-bunts and outright bunts

helped the Cards load the bases before Lester got an out. Martinez’s two-run single put the Cardinals ahead and his was the only hit that left the infield during the rally. And

his bat broke.

During batting practice, Tommy Pham measured his leads off first base and said his goal was to get about 20 feet away from the bag. He was “looking to get least two bags.”

He bunted for a base hit in the first inning, and took an aggressive lead before scoring on Martinez’s bloop. In the fifth, Pham walked, and with a chance to help the Cardinals

add to their 2-1 lead on Lester, Pham did what he planned to do. He took a lead, about 19 feet off the base.

Lester faked a throw. Pham returned to his lead.

Lester lobbed a throw to first.

Pham wasn’t back in time, and was picked off to end the inning.

Lester glared at the Cardinals’ dugout as he left the mound.

Past performance isn’t always indicative.

“He hasn’t made a successful pick in who knows how long,” Pham said. “He did something different, and it worked for him. So you adjust.”

Jose Martinez speaks up on Venezuela's crisis

By Derrick Goold St. Louis Post-Dispatch 7 hrs ago (0)

CHICAGO • The seven letters, written in white on his eye black this past week, were small enough to overlook but the more people notice the harder Jose Martinez hopes it

will be to do the same to the message.

“SOS,” it read under his right eye.

“VZLA,” under his left.

Martinez, the Cardinals’ starting first baseman Saturday, joined the growing ranks of major-league players from Venezuela to speak up and speak out against the turmoil

engulfing their country. Miguel Cabrera, the country’s most famous ballplayer and a former MVP, took to social media earlier this season to decry the actions of Venezuela’s

government, and Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli has also written messages in his eye black and posted videos on social media about the unrest and violence in

Venezuela. One of Cervelli’s Instagram posts began, “BASTA YA!!!” (“Enough already.”)

“Something to get attention, something to get help from whoever is watching, from whoever is capable,” Martinez said. “We need help, like a lot of help. Me, others, all my

friends in the big leagues, we’re trying to make something for the world to see it.”

For many players, like Martinez and Cardinals’ Class AAA reliever Miguel Socolovich, the concern for their country is driven by concern for their families in their country.

Socolovich expressed that fear to Cardinals Magazine earlier this season, and Martinez said he is constantly checking his phone for updates and news. His mother, Evelyn

Martinez, is visiting Martinez for this road trip to Chicago and Cincinnati and then likely returning home. Jose’s son, 3-year-old Mathias Alberto, and his ex-wife live 45 minutes

from the capital, Caracas.

“I want my son to grow up in a good way, in a good country I know,” Martinez explained. “In a country where you can go in the street and walk like normal.”

Venezuela has been plunged into economic and political chaos. A news story in The Washington Post this past week began, “Venezuela is on the brink of civil war.”

According to reports, at least 60 people have been killed in anti-government protests aimed at President Nicolas Maduro and his regime. Prices for goods have soared, and

basic necessities are either exorbitantly expensive or scarce or both.

Due to the spiraling crisis, the Cardinals and other major-league teams have rethought how they scout the country. The team’s U.S.-based baseball operations officials have

severely limited their visits or, in a few cases, stopped visiting the country. Major League Baseball notified its clubs that scouting workouts for Venezuelan players would be

held outside of the country, as ESPN Deportes reported, because “civil unrest (has) created an extremely dangerous and volatile situation.” The leagues have been supportive

of the players’ comments on social media.

Martinez said he follows some Instagram and Twitter streams from the protestors to stay aware of what is happening “in the streets back home.” Martinez explained how

some prominent players had been hesitant to talk about their concern publicly until Cabrera did with a scathing comment on In-stagram that read, in part, “A country killing

itself and those who have the power in Venezuela can’t do anything.” With that, Martinez said he and others decided to do more with their stage.

It just won’t be a message in eye black.

After his “SOS VZLA” was caught during an ESPN telecast, Major League Baseball contacted Martinez and gave him a warning. He said he intends to find another way to

draw attention, starting with talking about it.

“It was a warning but it was worth it to get my people a little attention,” Martinez said. “It’s sad to watch. It’s sad to see. I don’t want the violence. I want to let people know.”

GRICHUK SET FOR GAMES

Randal Grichuk is scheduled to join the High-A Palm Beach lineup Sunday after almost a week of independent work with a hitting coach at the Cardinals’ spring training

complex. With their left fielder’s strikeouts mounting and his average idling around .222, the Cardinals demoted Grichuk all the way down to Class A in order to give him some

one-on-one work with George Greer, a former college coach and now the club’s “offensive strategist.”

That’s a fancy name for hitting guru.

The teacher and pupil have been working in the batting cages at Jupiter, Fla., and Grichuk has not appeared in any games, by design. It’s an approach that Cardinals used

with several minor-league batters, like Patrick Wisdom who was once sent to Class A to rework his swing. Grichuk is the first major-league player to do it.

“You hope it’s not something you have to do more of at that level,” general manager John Mozeliak said. “We have done it before. We’ve seen results. And we were looking at

Randal and realizing he’s tried a lot things. We had to do something different.”

SCHU’S CATCH, SIERRA, ETC.

In the first inning Saturday, Yadier Molina fouled a pitch into the seats behind home plate – where it was caught by former teammate Skip Schumaker, who was attending the

game as a fan. … With the return of Jedd Gyorko from the paternity list Sunday night, the Cardinals intend to send rookie Magneuris Sierra back to Class AA on Sunday after

his two days in the majors. He leaves with his eight-game hitting streak still intact. … Former Cardinals’ catcher Gary Bennett, who lives in the Chicago area, attended the

game with his sons.
