QUICK SLANTS

- The Spiders face their third Top-25 opponent of the season this Saturday when the Great Danes of Albany visit Robins Stadium.

- These two programs have had quite the battles over the years, including a 36-30, triple OT thriller in Albany last season. In the past three meetings, the average margin of victory is +8.7.

- Today’s game will be a strength meet strength showdown with Richmond boasting the best offense in the country (557.5 yards per game), while Albany has allowed just 251.2 yards per game, which ranks sixth best in the country.

- In 46 games played at Robins Stadium, the Spiders are 34-12, includ-ing winning 14 of the past 16 dating back to the 2014 campaign.

- Since 2007, no other CAA school has won more conference titles than the Spiders (4) and that success has been on display for the home fans with Richmond boasting a 27-14 record in home CAA games since 2007, including a 17-12 mark in CAA games played at Robins Stadium.

- This group of Spiders has shown the ability to bounce back quickly, posting a 15-6 record after losses in the past five seasons. Entering today, the Spiders have won five straight games following losses.

- Redshirt QB Kyle Lauletta currently leads the country in yards per game (417.5) and is second in total passing TDs (14). He also enters today’s game needing just two passing TDs to tie Eric Ward for the program record (61). In addition, Lauletta is just 571 yards away from passing Ward on the all-time career passing list.

- Richmond native Tyler Wilkins enters today’s game needing just 49 yards receiving to pass the 1,000 career yards mark. Last week, Wilkins showed his versatility by taking an end-around and scam-pering 32 yards for his first career rushing TDs.

With the Spiders’ #14 ranking in the preseason polls, Richmond has now been ranked in the Top-25 poll for 41 consecutive weeks.

I Just Went Running...

With his career-high of 102 yards rushing against Howard last week, Jay Palmer is one of a slew of RBs to reach the century mark over the past two-plus seasons.

Since the start of the 2015 season, Richmond has had six different RBs rush for 100+ yards, that group includes Palmer, Jacobi Green, Seth Fish-er, Gordon Collins, Xavier Goodall and Deontez Thompson.

The six players with over 100-plus yards in that span is the highest total in all of FCS.

Against Elon in 2015, the Spiders had both Fisher and Green go for 100-yards in the win, which sparked a string of 18 100-yard performances over the next 27 games through the win over Howard earlier this season.

No Fly Zone

The Spiders have been ball-hawking this season with five INTs through the first four games.

That comes as no surprise as Richmond has now picked off at least one pass in 17 of its past 21 games dating back to the 2015 season.

Last year, Richmond’s 17 INTs ranked 12th nationally.

Since 2008, the Spiders have led the country three times in INTs and led the CAA five times during that span, including being ranked in the top-20 nationally seven different times.

Good Thing We Called That Guy

A new face making a lot of heads turn is redshirt sopho-more Cortrelle Simpson, who along with Dejon Brissett, has been one of the top targets offensively.

In the opener against #3 Sam Houston State, Simpson went for seven catches, 204 yards and a TD. It was the most receiving yards in a Spider debut in program history. It’s

just the sixth time ever that a Spider has gone for over 200 yards receiving and first since current Dallas Cowboy Brian Brown in 2015.

Simpson nearly went for 200 again in the game against Elon, finishing with 10 catches for 192, including the longest play in school history, a 93-yd TD from Lauletta.

Be Sure To Pack Extra Light Bulbs

The Spiders can pack quite a punch themselves, scoring 30-plus points in 19 of the past 31 games. In those games, the Spiders are 16-3.

Last year, Richmond’s 401 points ranked as the fourth-highest single-season total in program history.

High Expectations

Last year’s playoff appearance is the 11th-time in program history, seven of which have come in the past 12 years. Those seven playoff appear-ances in the past 12 years are the eighth-most nationally over that span.

The Spiders are one of just 10 schools who have earned a berth in the past three FCS playoffs. Others include: Chattanooga, South Dakota State, Sam Houston State, James Madison, Jacksonville State, Coastal Carolina, North Dakota State, Illinois State and New Hampshire.

- Brandon Waller spent 10 days doing non-profit work in Myanmar

- Griffin Trau spent a second straight summer abroad,-most recently studying in the Czech Republic after spending the 2016 summer as an intern with the New Zealand Institute of Sport on their marketing and development team.

- Marius Young is the President of FAME, an organization that the Richmond Football alumni set up to benefit area youth. He is also an acapella singer on campus.

- Justin Rubin, Dale Matthews, Jacob Roberson, Tyler Cole and Joshua Anderson spent almost eight weeks this past summer studying abroad in Richmond’s studyabroad program for student-athletes in Sevilla, Spain.

- Tafon Mainsah didn’t start playing football until his junior year in high school when his family moved to Charlotte from Wichita, Kansas. He had played soccer his entire life.

- Jarriel Jordan was selected to participate in the NCAA Ca-reer in Sports Forum with 280-plus other student-athletes from around the country.

- Thanks to increased funding, the Spiders spent the entire summer on campus training as a team together through summer classes, internships and researdch projects.

What’s Back and What’s Gone?

With Lauletta back under center, he is one of eight starters returning to a po-tent offense that lost two critical offensive lineman in Thomas Evans (currently with the Green Bay Packers) and Nick Vergos. Vergos and Evans had started 36 consecutive games on the Spiders offensive linemen.

In addition, the Spiders lost the best WR in program history Brian Brown (currently with the Dallas Cowboys), who set every receiving record possible, finishing his career with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.

Led by All-Conference honorees Brandon Waller and Brendan Coniker, the Spiders defense return eight starters, but lost All-Conference defensive tackle Winston Craig (now with the Philadelphia Eagles), who ranked in the top-three in the league in sacks with eight last season.

Acing Adversity

Richmond was dealth quite a bit of adversity last season with 18 players facing season-ending injuries, including All-American QB candidate Kyle Lauletta, who returns under center fully healthy for tonight’s showdown.

Also returning are RBs Gordon Collins and Xavier Goodall, who both suffered ACL injuries as well and both started games last year for the Spiders.

With nearly 20 years of coaching in the Colonial Athletic Association, Russ Huesman brings a wealth of experience to his new job as the head coach of the University of Richmond football team.

Huesman returns to the Spiders, where he was the defensive coordinator on the 2008 National Championship team, after eight tremendously successful sea-sons at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

The three-time SoCon Coach of the Year and three-time National Coach of the Year Award finalist was introduced as the program’s 36th Head Coach in De-cember.

“We are delighted with the outstanding job Director of Athletics Keith Gill has done in bringing to Richmond such a skilled and accomplished coach as Russ Huesman,” said University of Richmond President, Ronald A. Crutcher. “Spiders remember Coach Huesman for the important contribution he made to our national championship season in 2008. Under Coach Huesman’s leadership, we know that our student athletes will be mentored, inspired, and challenged to continue a winning tradition at the University of Richmond.” In his 30-plus years of coaching, Huesman has coached 39 All-Americans and 21 NFL Draft Picks, while being a part of nine conference championships and the 2008 National Championship with the Spiders.

“I’m excited to return to Richmond, a place that my family and I dearly love, for the opportunity to be the head coach of this incredibly successful football program,” Huesman said. “I’m very appreciative of President Crutcher and Keith Gill for putting their belief in me and allowing me this chance to work with such a tremendous group of young men. The commitment of this University and the Athletic Department to its football program is evident through the recent success and I look forward to building on that success at even greater heights.”

In his eight seasons at UTC, Huesman helped guide the Mocs to a 59-37 record, including a 36-16 mark in the past four seasons, which featured three Southern Conference regular season championships.

Chattanooga is one of only 10 programs in the country to reach the FCS Playoffs in each of the past three seasons. The Mocs are also just one of four programs in the country to post a playoff win in each of the past three seasons.

In the last eight seasons, the Mocs had at least seven players named to the All-SoCon team every year, in-cluding a school-record 17 honorees in 2014. Prior to Huesman’s arrival, the Mocs had not boasted seven members of any All-SoCon team since 1979.

UTC had 17 All-American honorees and three NFL draft picks with DB Buster Skrine (Cleveland – 2011), QB B.J. Coleman (Green Bay – 2012) and LB Davis Tull (New Orleans – 2015) over the last eight years.

“This University demands excellence both athletically and academically and we look forward to holding our student-athletes to the highest standard,” Huesman said. “I believe in this program and am excited to get to work.”

During his stop in Richmond, Huesman molded the Spiders’ defensive unit into one of the best in the country. In his final year at Richmond, the national championship season, the Spiders led the country in interceptions and finished in the top-10 in four other defensive categories.

Under Huesman’s guidance, the Spiders had 23 All-Conference selections, including former NFL stand-outs Lawrence Sidbury, Jr. and Justin Rogers.

Prior to his time with the Spiders, he spent six years at the University of Memphis, where he held several positions, serving as the recruiting coordinator and offensive line coach. He also coached the outside linebackers, tight ends and running backs. As recruiting coordinator, Huesman brought in a Top 50 re-cruiting class, ranked No. 1 in Conference USA, in 2002. It was the first recruiting class ranked in the Top 50 at Memphis.Huesman also coached for 14 years at William & Mary, both with the defense and special teams. During his time in Williamsburg, Huesman coached Steve Christie, a 15-year NFL place kicker with Tampa Bay, Buffalo, San Diego and the New York Giants. His coaching family tree also includes Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Alan Williams, the defensive backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts and Sean McDermott, the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. All three played for Huesman at William & Mary.

Huesman’s success on the gridiron is not limited to just coaching as he was a standout player at perennial power Moeller High School in his native town of Cincinnati, Ohio, prior to joining Chattanooga, where he played both football and baseball.

During his playing career with the Mocs, he helped UTC to a 31-11-2 mark and two Southern Conference championships.

Huesman was on the Mocs’ sidelines for the 1982 season as a student coach, earning his degree in busi-ness education in 1983. He followed that up with a move to the University of South Carolina as a graduate assistant under Morrison.

Huesman and his wife Amy have two daughters, Natalie (20) and Emily (17) and two sons, Jacob (23) and Levi (13).
