In 2014, Sotheby’s New York decided to venture into a novel territory by putting a white truffle that originated from the Umbria region of Italy up for auction—the first time the auction house had ever

dealt with a truffle. The truffle weighted nearly 1.8 kilograms and was considered at the time the “world’s largest white truffle”.

certainly contributes to their worth; white truffles are available for only a couple of months per year and almost solely from one region of Italy. And harvesting them is no easy job, either. Special pigs and trained dogs are used to hunt for truffles, and there are very few to be found, exacerbated by depleting numbers and declining quality every year. But the competition still grows. And the question still remains: why spend such an exorbitant amount of money for what is essentially a mushroom?

Demands is particularly high in Asia, perhaps because the exclusivity of truffles marks them as something for the affluent and cultured. With the average market price of a pound of white truffle is US$2000, the truffle has become a luxury commodity. The demand for truffles is so lucrative that a black market has arisen around them: heists are becoming increasingly commonplace.

Alfred Hitchcock wrote a screenplay called The Mystery of the Truffle Hunter during a visit to Alba in Italy in 1959. The movie never made it to the big screen, but the film’s plot encompasses the murder of an old truffle hunter. In 2010, a case similar in nature happened, but the order was in reverse. A truffle hunter fatally shot a thief trying to steal his truffles; the thief died afterwards.

Moreover, tax evasion has become so common that the Italian government allows truffle distributors to pay the fees on behalf

It was predicted to hit the US$1m mark and take the title as the world most expensive truffle, beating the record-breaking sale of 2010 when a 1.1-kilogram white truffle was sold for US$417,200.

The rarity of white truffles and the fact that it’s nearly impossible to cultivate them

hunters refuse to produce tax statements for their buyers, only accepting cash for their goods. China has also infamously tried to cash in on the lucrative trade by producing “fake” low-quality truffles, sprayed with synthetic aromas to make them smell bona fide.

The answer to the initial question is, essentially: truffles are elusive. They have become sought-after, rare and luxury goods and the rising popularity of white truffles has also been attributed to the International Truffle Fair also in Alba.

Nevertheless, many have attested to the taste of quality white truffles, and the hype surrounding white truffles cannot be without merits. Surely, those with refined palates are able to fully appreciate and enjoy the singular taste and aroma of the white truffles?

As for the result of Sotheby’s first truffle auction, the speculation that it would

reach up to a million dollars was a gross overestimation. The truffle was sold for a relatively meagre sum

of US$61,250 to a bidder in Taiwan. As to what Dan Abernethy, a Sotheby’s representative, said to The New Yorker: “Things are only ever worth as much as someone in the room wants to pay.”
