Only a powerhouse like Mikelangelo could pull off this iconic trifecta

Music

Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen stole Mikelangelo’s heart and soul as a young man, and now he delivers a stirring homage to these men who set him on his musical path. With his deep, deep baritone, the charismatic Mikelangelo delivers a stunning performance that shows off his myriad talents.

A highly entertaining and engaging personality on stage and off, he brings together a brilliant collection of songs, sprinkling them with personal stories and illuminating anecdotes.

A story about friendship, loyalty and inventiveness

Children / Families

Journey to an eccentric place where gadgets are poetic, puppets are naughty, machines are untamed, and circus tricks pop up when you’re least expecting them. This is a world where music appears from lemons, carrots and a bunny’s bum, monsters go crazy, and birthday parties are ferociously celebrated. Loose Ends is the story of a man who thinks he can organise his life in boxes, and has a knack for getting into mischief. It is not classical, not jazz, not world....it is the Grigoryan Brothers.

Music

For this performance The Grigoryan Brothers will be performing works from their latest release, which sees a return to classical repertoire. The album will include songs by composers such as Bach, Elgar, Dvorak, Rachmaninoff, Faure, De Falla and Ponce all masterfully arranged for them by their father Edward.

The program will also include other works highlighting Slava and Leonard’s diverse skills: their deep appreciation of a broad spectrum of musical styles has resulted in many collaborations involving music, both written and improvised. Combine this with their classical training and the result is a unique sound incorporating all these influences. It is not classical, not jazz, not world....it is the Grigoryan Brothers.

EUGENE ONEGIN BY PIOTR TCHAIKOVSKY

Even when compared with his masterpiece Swan Lake, Tchaikovsky said “Eugene Onegin is the best thing I ever wrote”.

Opera

The Opera is based closely on Pushkin’s novel in verse which is considered to be Russia’s greatest writer’s greatest work. First performed in 1879 by students of the Moscow Conservatoire, Tchaikovsky believed that only they could be counted on to imbue the performances with the naiveté and simple honesty of Pushkin’s characters.

If you can imagine the luscious melodic and harmonic language of Swan Lake or the Nutcracker Suite translocated to the theatre with appropriate Russian romantic overlays, you can imagine Eugene Onegin; a hauntingly beautiful work. Casterton Town Hall

Written and Performed by Hannie Rayson

Comedy

Hello, Beautiful! is a funny, big-hearted, one-woman show performed by one of Australia’s best-loved playwrights (Hotel Sorrento). Based on her best-selling memoir, Hello, Beautiful! brings you a 60-minute piece of sublime comic storytelling – true stories from an adventurous life, spiced with wit, tenderness, social observation, and intimacy. Rayson takes you from the East Brighton of her childhood to the treacheries of Hollywood, from share-houses in Fitzroy to the beauties of rural Australia. Rayson’s life and writing has always been driven by her deep curiosity about contemporary Australian life: how we live and what matters to us – the political and ethical challenges we face.

You’ll be struck with many “OMG that happened to me” moments, and feel as if you’ve been listening to stories told by your new best friend.

Melbourne Chamber Orchestra

Music

From an unrivalled musical pedigree and education, JS Bach’s sons blazed a revolutionary path. With Telemann and others, they were the avant-garde forging a new style. Combining awe-inspiring virtuosity, deep feeling, and brilliant colours, this is the music that inspired the Classical era. Rarely heard today, these are some of the most exciting and inventive compositions for chamber orchestra. Christopher Moore is one of Australia’s most recognised chamber musicians, a viola superstar whose verve and mastery of the instrument has seen him perform for audiences all over the world. He performs the great Telemann viola concerto, often thought to be the first solo concerto for the instrument, and a meticulous reconstruction of a lost viola concerto from JS Bach’s own transcriptions.

HIT PRODUCTIONS’ SHIRLEY VALENTINE

By Willy Russell

Comedy / Drama

Shirley Valentine, starring Mandi Lodge (Just the Ticket and Always...Patsy Cline) is a wonderfully entertaining monologue by a 42-year-old Liverpool mother whose self-esteem has been battered by school, marriage and life in general. When her best friend wins a Greek vacation for two, Shirley grasps the chance to head for the sun, to re-find herself, follow her dreams and to get a new lease on life.

With much humour, warmth, sympathy, human insight and a great deal of empathy for his female protagonist, Willy Russell brilliantly shows Shirley breaking out of the mould in which she was cast by society.

By Maude Davey - Nobody saw this happen so it may or may not be true.

Children / Families

Told by real life family, Maude Davey, David Pidd and their children, Alice (17) and Leo (10) in the tradition of travelling show biz troupes of old, The Crow Family shares an urban parable alongside songs, confessions, tales of famous and infamous families. It’s about urban scavengers and what we can learn from them, about children growing up and leaving home, about taking care of the world we share with birds and beasts and about becoming whatever it is we want to become. The Crow Family is an insight into the delicate and difficult business of being a family. The stage will become the temporary home of the Pidd Davey family, where beautiful harmonies will be created as a family sings together. Featuring songs by Australian rock legend, Peter Farnan (Boom Crash Opera), The Crow Family is a gentle, intimate, and beautiful music performance event about remarkable creatures and what makes us human.

By Finucane & Smith

Cabaret

From Patrick White Playwright Award Winner Jackie Smith and world famous cabaret stars Finucane & Smith (Caravan Burlesque) comes the true story of the wildest showgirl of the nineteenth century, Lola Montez. She horsewhipped the editor of the Ballarat Times (for a bad review), swung down mineshafts on a single rope with champagne in hand, escaped arrest dressed only in her jewels, showered with gold nuggets and insults, swathed in scandal. Her erotic Spider Dance was “the most libertinish and indelicate performance that could be given on the public stage” (Sydney Morning Herald 1855). In 1855 the wildest showgirl of the nineteenth century, Lola Montez, toured Australia and its goldfields. The scandal is legend. It stars Caroline Lee (Miss Bronte) and Parisian dance siren Holly Durant and is directed by Moira Finucane.

I like that colours and textures can provoke a variety of feelings in the viewer, which in turn focuses their attention.

Cape Grim, Convincing Ground, Murdering Gully: geographical features bear the burden of our largely unacknowledged violent colonial past.

These works don’t attempt to tell such stories but rather to reflect on them, as such, both the making and viewing of the artworks can be viewed as acts of mourning.
