With approximately 50 returning letterman, third-year head coach WillieSimmons is excited about the veteran experience on the 2017 Prairie View A&M University football team.

“I think for the first time in our threeyearshere, weasacoachingstafffeelreallycomfortable with the amount of returning players we have in all three phases," Simmons said. "Our first year, we were aveteran offensive team, and very youngondefense.Lastyear itkindof flippedaswewere young and new on offense, witha little bit of experience on defense. Thisyear, we feel like we have experience in all three phases offensively, defensively, andwe return a lot of specialists. We really feel good about the amount of experience we return. That gives us a ton of leadership and a lot of depth than we’ve had previously.”

OFFENSEWith the departure of senior quarterback

Trey Green, redshirt sophomore Jalen Morton, redshirt freshman Neiko Hollins, and junior college transfer Lavell McCullers willcompeteforthestartingjob.

Morton saw significant time last year, playing in nine games with four starts, passing for 945 yards and eight touchdowns while rushing for nearly 200 yards and six touchdowns.

“We have three very talented guys who areallvyingforthestartingjob,"Simmonssaid. "Coming out of the spring, they all showed flashes andwhy theywere highlyrecruited guys coming out of high school and junior college. They all bring a great skill set. Big guys – all 6-3 or taller - helps as far asseeingdownthefield.Thatshouldgiveustheabilitytopushtheballdownthefieldalot more this year."

The three leading rushers in the Panthers' offense all return this season.ThetrioofSta'FonMcCray(427yards,fiverushing TDs), Dawonya Tucker (406 yards, 4 TDs), and Caleb Broach (383 yards, 4 TDs) combined to rush for more than 1,200 yards and rushing 13 touchdowns.

"Caleb started the majority of games in the backfield last year, but was nicked upthis spring, which gave Sta’fon and Dawonya alotofrepswiththefirstteam,"Simmonssaid. "With that opportunity, Sta’fon really did a good job of separating himself fromthe group, in terms of taking charge, his attentiontodetail, andenthusiasmcomingto work during the spring. He’s a big back and runs extremely hard, runs through a lot oftackles, andisdeceptivelyfast.

"Dawonyaisourlightinginabottletypeguy," Simmons said. "He’s small, but electric andwecanusehiminanumberofdifferentways which gives our offense versatility.Caleb is that steady force, a guy you don’t want to tackle as the game moves on. He runs extremely hard and does a good job of understanding everything and plays with a

chip on his shoulder." At wide receiver, three of the top four

pass catchers return, led by Darius Floyd, who caught 40 passes for 501 yards and four touchdowns. KhaDarel Hodge averaged 16.2 yards per catch in gaining 454 yards and a team-leading six TDs. Returning SWAC Newcomer of the Year Joshua Simmons caught 20 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns and also had a kickoff returnfor touchdown last season.

"Darius is a guy that came into his own during the second half of last season," Simmons said. "He was a big-play guy for us on screens, reverses, jet sweeps. We need to get the ball in his hands as he’s very dynamic with the football. We feel like we have good pieces of the pie, in that they all have a skill set that complement each other.

"KhaDarel is a guy who I think is ready to have a breakout year," said Simmons. "He came out last year and performed really well the first three games of the seasonbefore being injured. That kept him out for the next few games before he returned lateintheseason,andfinishedwithahugegameatArkansas-PineBluff.

"Joshua had a great offseason. He waspulling double duty, also running track in thespring, butwasstillabletogiveusalotofgoodworkonthefootballfield. He’sourspeed guy, arguably one of the fastest guys on the team, and one of the fastest players in the conference. He’s going to really help us take the top off of defenses and keepthem honest."

Experienced depth also returns at tightendinthetrioofCameronSmith,ChristianBeltran, and Jontre Epps provide another receiver intheoffenseandaddedstrengthin the run game.

"Cameron started every game last year, is our steady eddy, and the most consistent," Simmons said. "If you throw it in his radius, he’ll catch it. He understands every outside position on the field. He's perhaps asknowledgableabouttheoffensemorethananyone except the quarterbacks.

"Christian had the more productivespring,"said Simmons. "He has phenomenal hands, probably the best hands on the team, and has improved on picking up the system. He’s a guy that can create mismatch problems with his size and ball skills. We lookforwardtohiscontinueddevelopment.

"Jontre is a talented guy who made some playsforus, andsimilartoChristiangivesusmore in the passing game."

Up front, Shawn Pierce is scheduled to return from injury to anchor the offensiveline along with returners Donovan Wheaton and Corbin Finlayson.

"Shawn has played a lot for us. He is the most experienced player in the group, the strongest guy on the team, and one of the hardest workers," said Simmons. "He trimmed down and is body looks really good. We’re moving him from right tackle

to left tackle, protecting the quarterback’sblind side and we’re expecting big thingsfrom him.

"Donovan is a returning all-conference player for us," Simmons said. "He brings a lot of tenacity with a mean streak. He's really good in the running game, and is gettingbetter in thepassing game. Corbinwas the backup center last year but played a lot of meaningful snaps for us. He moved into the starting role, andhas a good skillset. Very athletic guywith amean streak.Ifhecancontinuetodevelopintheweightroom, he can have a really, really big year."

DEFENSE

Similartotheoffense, alotofexperiencereturns on the defensive side of the ball to a unit that ranked in the Top 10 in the FCS in sacks in 2016.

Three-timeAll-SWACperformerDeVohnReed led the team in sacks last season and combines with James Harper to bring experience and tenacity in the middle of the line.

"DeVohn is a high motor guy, and makes a ton of plays because his motor never stops," Simmons said. "He's quick with his hands, diagnoses plays very quickly, and he doesn't stopuntiltheplayisfinished. He'sreadytotake the jump to become one of the premier lineman in the SWAC and FCS Football.

"James has all the tools, and when he wants to go, is unblockable," said Simmons. "We're looking for him to play with that motor and chip on his shoulder every play. He’s ready to have a huge year."

Willie Green and Akheem Barton will anchortheoutsideendpositions.

"Willie has done a phenomenal job in the weight room this off season gettingstronger," Simmons said. "He's a very athletic guy, plays with a great motor, and with his added strength, is due for a breakout season. Akheem has played a ton of snaps forus, is veryathletic, and isourbest pass rusher."

At linebacker, Jalan Coleman will be called on to make big plays in all facets of the defense.

"Jalan is a long, rangy athletic guywhocan rush the passer, play the run against an offensive lineman, and can drop intocoverage," Simmons said. "He wants to rush the passer, and now our scheme now allows him to do that."

Steven Guillory and newcomer Anthony Stubbs will also play big roles at linebacker.

"Steven came into his own last season," said. Simmons. "He's the smartest player on defense, and gets everyone lined up. He plays sideline to sideline, and is also a force in run game. Anthony is our fastest linebacker and arguably our most athleticlinebacker. He works hard in the weight room to take the pounding, and brings a new element to our defense because of his athleticisminthemiddle."

In the secondary, Sonnie Williams and newcomer Jaylen Harris lead the race to start at cornerback.

"Sonnie came on late in the season as a true freshman," Simmons said. "He made hisfirststartatRice, andafterthatouting,he really came intohis ownover thefinalfour games of the season. He has elite ability, can really run, is quick and has good ball skills.

"Jaylen is a transfer from UTEP who had a really good spring. He's been our toughest corner, and being a former professional baseball player, he doesn't mind mixing it up. He brings experience and size to the position."

A pair of former walk-ons man the safetypositionsinRaleighJohnsonandWillSkinner.

"Both guys earned scholarships with their play, and have played a lot for us," said Simmons. "Raleigh plays more in the box and doesn't mind being physical. He has range, is an enforcer, and will energize the crowd and team with his ability to make big hits and the big play.

"Willalwaysfindstheball, whetherthat'sforced fumbles, fumble recoveries, pass breakups. He's a play-making guy for us, and has been a steady performer."

Former running back-turned cornerback ArthurLockettreturnsinhisversatileroleinthe secondary.

"Arthur brings a toughness to our team," Simmons said. "He's always around the ball, and has a motor that never stops. He's played cornerback, nickel, and has returned kicks. He loves the game, and plays it the way it should be. He's on all the special teams, and doesn’t want to come off thefield."

SPECIAL TEAMSAll the components of the kicking game

return for the Panthers. Even Pohlman is back in the key role as snapper for all kicks.

"Nothing can be done without snapping the football," Simmons said. "Evan has NFL times snapping theballwith accuracy andquickness. He’s a weapon for us and a big reason we can always be near the top of the leagueinpunting."

Armaury Martinez emerged as theprimary place kicker during the middle of the season, and returns along with signee Zack Elder.

"Armaury was inserted during the season and was very consistent with our extra pointsandshortfieldgoals,"saidSimmons."Zack has a big leg and can hit it from 60+ yards. We'll use Armaury for PATs and short fieldgoals, andZackforlongfieldgoals.Wefeel really good about both place kickers."

Owen Hoolihan earned second team All-SWAC honors as a punter and will focus on flipping field position in favor of thePanthers' defense.

"Owenhasbeenreallyconsistentpuntingforus," Simmons said. "HehasaspirationsofbeingfirstteamAll-SWACaswellasbeingan All-American. He's worked extremely hard this offseason. As a trio,we feel likethey give us an edge."

Returning SWAC Newcomer of the Year JoshuaSimmonswillagainspearheadkickoffreturns for the Panthers. He returned a kickoffforatouchdownlastseasonatRice.

"Josh showed against Rice what type of kickoff return ability he has, being able torun one back against an FBS team," head coach Simmons said. "Hopefully he can become a weapon so that teams feel they have to kick away from him."

Dawonya Tucker will join Simmons on kickoffreturnsaswellaspunts.

"If they do kick it away from Josh, they’ll kick it to Dawonya, and we feel really good if they kick if deep that we can get great fieldpositionifnotrunitallthewayback,"HC Simmons said. "We have two very explosive guys who can really run. They are dynamicallyshiftythatcangiveusachancetohavegreatfieldposition."

SCHEDULEThe seven-game scheduling format

returns to the Southwestern AthleticConference in 2017. Each team will play all teams in its division along with three teams from the opposite division.

"We shift to the seven-game scheduleso that will be something new for us," Simmons said of the format that returns for the first time since 2009. "Every gamewas always important. Now with only seven games as opposed to nine, the margin for error decreases. The west was the tougher side last year, and we’ll play everyone in the division as always and take away two teams from the east. We’ll approach it the same way."

PrairieViewA&Mwillplayfiveofsevenleague games away from home, beginning with the season opener at arch-rival Texas Southern in the Labor Day Classic. The Panthers will also play road games at Alabama St., Alcorn St., and Southern, along with the annual showdown against Grambling in the State Fair Classic.

"We can’t afford to look down theroad because our first game is the mostimportant game against cross-town rival Texas Southern on the road," Simmons said. " They’ll have a game up on us (opening at Florida A&M Aug. 26). That’ll be a challenge for us, but we’re up to the challenge against them, as well as the rest of the conference. We know Grambling is always going to be a nemesis along with Southern, as we go to BatonRougethisyear, andwegetPineBluffhere at home.

"We travel to a couple of tough games on the East – going to Alabama State and to Lormantoplaythethree-timeEastDivision

champs Alcorn. Jackson State is gettingbetter and we'll face them at home. Weface three really good teams out of the East. We’ll have our hands full this year, but that’s why we play the games. That’s why we practice. We’re looking forward to what’sahead."

In non-conference play, PVAMU will play three Southland Conference schools, including defending league champ and perennial power Sam Houston St. in the home opener live on ESPNU. The Panthers will also travel to Nicholls St. and Incarnate Word, along with hosting Bacone forhomecoming.

"I'm excited about the schedule," Simmons said. We're playing three Southland Conference schools, and it gives us an chance to really show the FCS what we’re capable of doing at that level. In the past, we’ve only played SWAC games and FBS games. They haven’t been able to really gauge our growth as a program. With those three opponents, teams across the country will be able to see how far we’ve come as a program."

PROGRAM STATUSPrairie View A&M football enters year

three of the Willie Simmons era with the most returning depth since taking over in 2015. With the opening of new Panther Stadium last season, and back-to-back winning seasons, he likes the direction oftheprogrambutisnotsatisfied.

"I feel good about where we are headed. After two years, we’ve done a good jobrecruiting and getting good players in theprogram," Simmons said. "Position byposition, mostoftheguysineverycoachingroom are players our staff recruited. We’ve won a lot of games. We’re 15-3 in conference play in the last two years, with two of those losses to Grambling in the State Fair Classic. We know what we’re chasing. As a whole, we feel like we’ve done enough things to take the next step in this program’s evolution. We’vedonealotofgoodthingsin the program to this point.
