Long, fu l l - length dresses and skir ts in sol id colors look most stunning. The long ver t ica l l ine rea l ly s l ims and f latters ever y female body, especia l ly on camera — which is probably why the red carpet is a lways fu l l of so many dresses and not ver y many pantsuits ! You get to br ing severa l looks to your photoshoot , and for one or more, we recommend saying yes to a dress .

Page 19: 2017 Portrait Style Guide - Jeannine Pound Photography

Swishing, f lowy dresses and skir ts br ing breathtaking movement to your images . C onsider sof ter fabr ics l ike chi f fon or tu l le , they look amazing in any sett ing . With your guy, coordinate a casual cotton dress or denim skir t with his j eans , a knee-length swishy skir t or A-l ine with his cargo shor ts , fu l l length chi f fon with his khakis or s lacks , and go swishy or rock a l i t t le black dress under the c ity l ights .

When consider ing the lengths of your dresses or sk ir ts , i t’s a lso a good idea to fac tor in whether or not there wi l l be l i t t le ones in your photos . If you have smal ler chi ldren, we’ l l l ikely have you s itt ing or crouching on the ground to interact up-close with them. Cute, shor ter cocktai l - length dresses photograph beaut i fu l ly, but i f you have l i t t le ones in your photos , a f loor- length dress or sk ir t , or perhaps a cute midi-skir t , wi l l make moving around with your k ids much eas ier, and look per fec t on camera, too.

If you’re an expect ing mother, highl ight your baby bump with snug f itt ing dresses or maxi dresses . These dresses create the best s i lhouettes to f latter your f igure, and look so sty l ish! A lot of our expect ing mothers love to incorporate f lowers or beaut i fu l headpieces , or perhaps a long f lowing t rain to f l ip in the wind as wel l .

YOU CAN BRING ONE OUTFIT SET OR UP TO FIVE! Most of our c l ients who choose three to f ive out f its wi l l br ing one “wow” dress , and at least one other s l ight ly more casual dress that has a “date night” feel . But i f you want to br ing two “wow” dresses , g ive yoursel f permiss ion to do it ! The camera loves runway-esque apparel and so do we! As a 3rd, 4th or 5th out f it , you may want to include fave comfortable r ipped jeans with logo T-shir t to rea l ly just show "you" on an ever yday.

Remember, you don’t have to br ing more than one out f it i f i t’s too stressfu l to coordinate or i f you’d rather just s t ick to one fabulous look. One out f it that you love wi l l be so much better than mult iple looks you’re not ver y excited about . And i f you st ick with one out f it set , you won’t have to spend any of your t ime changing!

WHEN CHO OSING COLORS FOR YOUR MAIN OUTFITS, WE RECOMMEND selec t ing sof ter, l ighter t ints , and faded hues . By avoiding u lt ra-br ight , bold colors , we br ing attent ion to your faces , eyes , express ion, and relat ionships . The camera loves t ints of sof t pink and muted blues , mixed with sophist icated l ight neutra ls l ike heather gray, creams, leather brown, tawny blond, faded ol ive, and white . The sof ter color pa lette f it s into natura l outdoor environments (as wel l as urban places) . Black may be most s l imming " in person" , but "on camera" it loses dimension, looking wide - and it i s not complemented by colors in nature. Blacks CAN be used to good advantage as a secondar y out f it in architec tura l or crowded c ity backgrounds. B older

colors can a lso do wel l in c ity locat ions as a second out f it .

IN OUR EXPERIENCE, EVERY WOMAN, REGARDLESS OF HER shape has an area of her body that she’s se l f -conscious about . WE LOVE WOMEN'S SHOULDERS & ARMS, and we can shape using l ight and angle , so we prefer dresses that show of f arms. However, arms are a ver y common tender spot for many women. Three-quar ter length s leeves create an awesome s l imming ef fec t on al l arms, so look for layers over a s leeveless dress l ike a cute jacket , blazer or cardigan. L ayers g ive us opt ions to play with in your shoot .

HEELS ELONGATE WOMEN’S LEGS making them look fabulous . Closed-toed heels in par t icular look great on camera because they carr y out the l ine of your leg a l l the way down to your toe. If your toes are showing in a peep-toe heel , you might want to schedule a pedicure before your sess ion so you don’t regret le tt ing your feet show. These l i t t le t r icks make a l l the di f ference!

QUICK TIP

Bring a pair of easy-to-kick-off flats to wear when moving from place to place in between photos. Your feet will thank you later!

WELL FIT TING RIPPED JEANS OR DARKER DENIM work wel l for addit ional out f its , these are what we l ive in . We recommend a mix of button-up shir ts (rol led s leeves) and sol id T-shir ts . Fave graphics can be included as a third or four th out f it .

LONG, FIT TED PANTS AND CLOSED-TOED SHOES ARE the most sophist icated and mascul ine looks for men. They draw attent ion away f rom legs & feet and place it where you want it : on his handsome face. S o, for your sess ion, i t’s best to leave shor ts , sandals and bagg y pants at home. Fitted pants in sol id shades work best on camera. Gray or navy complement most women’s out f its . Rust , pumpkin, ol ive, and blues are modern fun. Ma ny of ou r g uys love to mi x a su it coat or spor t coat w it h a d i f ferent pa nt color. It adds v isua l interest a nd persona l it y. However, i f we are making solo photos for a man or teen, a good var iety of darks and l ights for 3-5 out f its works wel l . C oordinate with your environment and props . BLACK WORKS FOR MEN when photographed solo. Guys don' t mind looking larger than l i fe , dark & dramat ic . Needless to say, black a lso works for the man in the tux with the woman in the l i t t le black dress . Or an indoor black background with fami ly a l l wear ing black. Other wise, when photographed with fami ly, do not use black. Instead, incorporate shades of the fami ly ' s colors to look cohesive.

MUTED COLORS LO OK GREAT on men. Br ight color dyes are muted by adding grey or black, and those tones look mascul ine on camera. White is a great c lass ic neutra l , use it . But colors wi l l look more manly i f they are a l i t t le dark & grung y instead of br ight . When pic tured with a woman, a conf ident man can carr y of f grung y muted-pink pants smashingly.

QUICK TIP

Wrinkles REALLY show up in photos. Iron your clothes or better yet, have a cleaner do it!

JEANNINE POUND | 38

Page 40: 2017 Portrait Style Guide - Jeannine Pound Photography

YOU CAN BRING ONE OUTFIT SET OR FIVE! Most fami ly men choose one or two out f its for fami ly por traits , as more of the focus is on the k ids and there won' t be a lot of t ime for him to change clothes . Two is immensely preferable to one, even in the fami ly man scenar io.

If we are making your solo por traits , please br ing three to f ive out f it sets . You wi l l send a cel l phone snap of your choices a week in advance, so we can plan locat ions with your out f its .

One or more of your out f it choices should be dressy enough for a date night or a more formal event , and then cover your bases down to quite casual . With mult iple out f its , you can exper iment with colors , and with those accessor ies & props that te l l your stor y.

MOST MEN AREN’ T OVERLY EXCITED TO TAKE PHOTOS FOR T WO hours , because they don’t have an expectat ion of what’s to come and why it’s so important to you. Take f i f teen minutes to educate and empower your guy. Tel l h im why you chose us and our sty le of photography. Google color theor y (complementar y and analogous colors , not ing l ight t ints for women or dusky tones for men) . S elec t a harmonious color combinat ion (pa lette or scheme) , perhaps based on your best loved dress in your closet , or colors you 'd l ike on your wal ls . Work a l l the out f its into that color pa lette . If c lothing selec t ion seems over whelming, a l low us to connect you with wardrobe exper ts who wi l l v is it your closet and make recommendat ions . Easy Peasy.

The goal for coordinat ing a fami ly is to v isua l ly break up the colors and shades so that you’re not a l l wear ing the same color on top and bottom. The more we can mix that up, the better. Plan each out f it with “dominant colors” and “accent colors” in mind. A dominant color is the color that you see the most in an out f it , whi le an accent has a smal ler piece of v isua l rea l estate . When you’re planning each fami ly member’s out f it , i f you can aim for each person to have a di f ferent dominant color, and then t ie in and var y the accent colors , i t’s going to look great a l l together.

For example, i f you’re wear ing a blush dress , sof t blue earr ings and nude heels (blush being your dominant color) , then he could wear a navy coat with a white button-down and gray pants , paired with brown leather shoes and maybe even a blush pocket square (making navy his dominant color) . Your daughter could wear a sof t blue top with a white tu l le sk ir t (making a sof t blue her dominant color) whi le your son wears l ight beige pants with navy suspenders and a white button down (making white his dominant color) . Now each person has their own dominant color whi le st i l l incorporat ing a few touches of the others that wi l l pul l a l l the looks together. This wi l l break up the color v isua l ly and highl ight each personal ity. Most of our moms choose their dress f i rst , and then bui ld the rest of the fami ly ’s out f its based around that .

Remember, we recommend selec t ing those sof ter, l ighter tones and avoiding those u lt ra-br ight , bold colors . The camera loves shades of sof t pink and muted blues , mixed with sophist icated l ight neutra ls l ike heather gray, creams, leather brown and white . Feel f ree to var y the shades of the colors , too. That sof ter color pa lette f it s beaut i fu l ly into a natura l environment , and can eas i ly be paired in so many di f ferent ways .

THE CREWcoordinating

TO CO ORDINATE YOUR CREW KEEP IN MIND that you wi l l look the most cohesive on camera when the color pa lette and wardrobe pieces coordinate, but don’t ac tua l ly “match.” In fac t , we recommend that you avoid thinking about “matching,” and instead think about what “f its” together. This wi l l create more v isua l interest , and a l low each personal ity to shine through.

Page 50: 2017 Portrait Style Guide - Jeannine Pound Photography

If you have mult iple chi ldren, don’t feel l ike you need to put them a l l in the same type of out f it . For example, one of your daughters could wear a dress and f lats , whi le the other wears a sk ir t and boots . One of your sons could wear a bowtie , whi le the other one wears suspenders . Mixing up the wardrobe pieces wi l l br ing a great v isua l interest to the photos .

mixing up the p i e c e s

B efore your sess ion, pack a bag with snacks and water for k ids & adults . Add any smal l objec ts ( l ike toys or lol l ipops) that might help us get smal l chi ldren 's attent ion when it’s t ime for them to look at the camera. For older fami ly members , i t’s a good idea to prepare them for what’s to come before the sess ion star ts . Explain how much the photos mean to you so they know to be on their best behavior.
