▪ Transition to School – In the Tasman Early Starters (TES) programme, the school liaises
with new parents on ways they can support their child’s learning before they start school and in the first few months of school. The programme includes a kit to take home when the child turns four and a half. This kit provides material that will help the development of literacy, numeracy and motor skills. The school can provide videos and workshops for parents on important topics such as teaching your child to read, school ailments, etc. if you are interested in finding out more about TES, please contact the new entrant Teacher, Jude Aikenhead ([email protected]).
▪ Senior Leadership for Year 7/8 – a Full Primary school offers so much more in the way of
leadership than other systems. Tasman School is no exception. We explicitly plan to build the leadership skills of our senior students in a range of contexts. A “Leadership Academy” exists among our cluster of schools to promote a supportive network for Year 7 & 8 students in preparation for secondary school. We see our seniors as having a vital role in the day to day management of the school and as our “first role models”. They build strong leadership capacity during their senior years.
▪ Senior Classes Outdoor Education programme – (Years 6 – 8) an extensive programme
which is designed not only to develop the children’s knowledge, of, and compassion for, the environment but to enhance the qualities of team-building and leadership. The programme works on a three-year cycle and includes 3 camps: Year 1: Outdoor Education based Alpine Camp. Year 2: Abel Tasman Camp – summer camp at Marahau and the Abel Tasman National Park providing adventurous, outdoor pursuits. Year 3: City camp in Wellington, giving the students an opportunity to develop competence in a city environment.
▪ School-wide inquiry units – students from Year 1 to Year 8 have an opportunity to work
together in a team environment. Once a term we try to timetable a study which has a whole-school focus. This creates a lot of interest throughout the school and encourages peer support.
▪ Second Language Programme – Tasman School is part of a cluster of local schools who have introduced a second language programme to their curriculum. German
and Japanese modules are run in the senior school and knowledge of Te Reo Maori is being built throughout the school.
▪ Gifted And Talented Education – Tasman School recognises the needs of our students
and supports their ongoing learning, in ways that are specific to each learner.

▪ eLearning – Tasman School recognises the importance of future focussed learning in our technological world and is committed to providing up-to-date computer equipment and e-learning with chromebooks in Rooms 2 – 5 and iPads in Room 1. The entire school is networked and has high speed fibre, and is part of an innovative cluster of e-learning schools.
▪ MOTEC - Experience in a range of technologies is provided at a purpose-built centre
in Motueka for our Year 7 – 8 students. Transport by bus is provided. The million dollar Motueka Technology Centre provides state-of-the-art facilities for the teaching of technology. Its specialist staff provide an outstanding programme, which is unrivalled in the Nelson area.
▪ Reading Recovery - Jude Aikenhead is a qualified Reading Recovery teacher. She provides this programme for the junior school students who require this specialist assistance
▪ Celebration is fundamental to our school. The Muddy Buddies Adventure Race is a
popular event – look out for this in Term 1. We meet regularly as a community for a range of school based social events.

of important things you need to know
Absences – If your child is unable to attend school for any reason, please contact the school office before 9.15 am that day. Accidents – If your child is injured at school, staff will take any appropriate first aid measures. We will notify you immediately if your child has fallen from a height, has been hit on the head, or has a serious injury. Assembly – Full school assemblies are held each Friday afternoon at 2.30 to celebrate students’ learning. The classes take it in turn to “host” these assemblies. We encourage parents to attend if possible. Behaviour – We expect students to care for themselves, others and our environment with respect. Behaviour is guided by 3 key questions: Is it safe? Is it fair? Is it kind? Bell Times – the school day is structured as follows: School Starts - 8.55 am Playtime - 10.30 to 10.55 am Lunchtime - 12.30 to 1.15 pm Afternoon Break - at teachers discretion Finish Time - 2.55 pm Biking to School – We encourage parents to make safe decisions e.g. accompanying their children to school if under 10 years old. Older students may bike to school on their own. They should bike directly to the bike sheds. On Wednesdays and Fridays children are allowed to bring their skates, scooters, bikes and roller blades and can use the courts at lunchtime for this. Bike riders may use the field area. Board of Trustees – The Board is comprised of at least three elected parents, a staff representative and the Principal. The Board is responsible for all areas of governance. Meetings are open to the public and are held in the school staffroom each month, February through December, at 7pm. We welcome your interest in this important function. Buses – Our school bus services Tasman, Mapua and Mahana Schools. It travels from Mapua to Tasman via Pomona and Marriages Road as far north as Eden Road. The bus arrives at Tasman School at 8.00 am and departs at 3.00pm. Eligible students must live a minimum of 3.5 kms from the school. BYOD – Bring Your Own Device – Students are able to bring to school for learning purposes, their notebook, tablet or i-pad. The school will provide a secure login facility. A guest Wifi password is provided by the Office Manager for students to connect to the internet. Devices are the responsibility of the student and the school takes no responsibility for the breakage, or loss of a device.

Concerns – An open door policy exists at our school. If you have any concerns relating to school, we encourage you to talk to us about them. Please feel free to approach the class teacher or the principal any time outside of teaching hours. Dental Therapist – Dental therapy is available to all Tasman students through the Parklands School Dental Clinic. The Dental Nurse will contact families to arrange for annual checkups. Discipline – We work to develop student self-management skills by providing clear boundaries and expectations. We use a restorative justice process to address wrongdoing. Enrolments: We welcome new enrolments. When enrolling a 5 year old for the first time, you MUST bring with you their Birth Certificate or Passport, Residency Permit or Citizenship Certificate and any immunization certificates, if applicable. To make the transition to school easier, we encourage parents to bring their children in for pre-enrolment visits. Fashion – Tasman School does not have a school uniform. We expect children to be dressed in a way that will allow them to participate in school activities, e.g. P.E or MOTEC. We do have a school t-shirt available for purchase ($20 from the office) for students to wear to represent our school at sporting or inter-school activities. Fundraising – Fundraising at Tasman School is run by a separate fundraising group who welcome new members. Homework – All classes provide homework of some degree. We ask for parents’ support with this. This is developed in consultation with students and whanau to meet learning needs. Internet – This is available in all classrooms via a managed wifi. Students sign an Internet User Agreement and behaviour is guided by our school questions: is it fair, is it safe, is it kind? Library – Children are encouraged to take library books home on a regular basis (maximum 3). Please do not attempt to mend any damaged books, just return them and the mending team will tackle them. There are no fines for overdue books but we do ask you to return them weekly during class library times. We are always looking for people to help in the library and if you are interested, please let the office know. Lost Property – Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their own property – particularly clothing. Clothes such as jackets, sweatshirts, swimsuits, hats, etc. should be labelled with the child’s name. Lost property can be picked up outside the foyer during term time. Unclaimed items will be disposed of at the end of each term. Motec –All Year 7 and 8 students attend this technology session at Parklands School on a Wednesday from 12.00 noon to 2.30 pm. Students are required to wear closed in footwear for safety reasons (shoes, gym shoes etc.) and girls to wear long hair up. They travel by bus to and from school. The MOTEC teachers will advise students of any special requirements for classes. There is an annual fee charged for each student to cover the cost of materials used. Newsletters – Our informative school newsletter comes out weekly, on a Friday. Newsletters are emailed home. These are also available on the school website.

Office Hours – The Tasman School office is staffed most days from 8.00am to 4.00pm by the Principal or Office Manager. The school answerphone is checked by staff regularly. Parent Help – Tasman School actively encourages parent help, whether it be working with the children in a class or with transport and/or supervision of sports teams. Please talk to your child’s teacher or the Principal if you would like to help out. We would love to hear from you. Reporting to Parents - The school reports to parents three times a year. In Term 1 an interim written report accompanies parent interviews. There are follow-up student led interviews in Terms 2 or 3, as arranged by the teachers. A full written report is sent out in Term 4. School Donation – Tasman School donations are $65 per year per child, with a maximum of $150 per year per family. These contributions are a donation to the school but are important to the operational running of the school. School Lunches - During the two “winter” terms on a Monday, the school provides hot water from the staffroom for soups, noodles, etc. and heat-ups such as pies, pizzas, toasties, etc. can be heated in the microwave, provided they are in suitable wraps or containers. School T-Shirts and Hats – We encourage each child to have a school sports top. The Board subsidises these by approximately $30 per shirt. T-shirts cost $20.00; hats cost $20.00. These are available to purchase at the Office. Stationery – Stationery lists are available from the website and are updated at the end of each year. The school only stocks the more specialised items used by the new entrant room. Sun-Smart – Tasman School is a “Sun-smart” school and has a “no hat, then play in the shade” policy. Hats are to be bucket type hats not baseball caps. Swimming – The swimming programme runs for the first 6 weeks of Term 1. Swimming is compulsory unless a note is sent from a parent / caregiver. Toys at School – We would prefer children to keep their toys at home to avoid potential damage or loss. We take no responsibility for toys lost or damaged. If your child has a special toy they would like to share for news, please negotiate this with your teacher. Uniform – There is no compulsory formal uniform although some families choose to wear the Tasman school sports t-shirt. We expect children to wear tidy clothing appropriate for learning and physical activity. Zero Tolerance for Bullying - Tasman School prides itself on its safe learning environment. For this reason we have no tolerance for bullying whatsoever. If you have any reason to believe your child is a victim of bullying, please contact the school immediately.

Mission Statement
Tasman School Community’s Core Beliefs:
▪ That foundation subjects are the key to children’s education Classroom expectation will be: that literacy and numeracy should have priority in classroom programmes, both explicitly as stand alone subjects and as part of our integrated teaching approach.
▪ That children should feel safe at school and that school is a positive environment for learning
Classroom expectation will be: that Tasman School classrooms are safe and welcoming places that have established and consistent management systems in place where children know the boundaries and consequences of their actions. These expectations are reflected with the same degree of consistency in the playground.
▪ That school caters for the needs of all children regardless of gender, level of ability or ethnicity Classroom expectation will be: that individual needs are identified and programmes are developed and monitored to cater for the individual needs of students.
▪ That school is a place where children can develop and foster the life skills necessary for success in modern society
Classroom expectation will be: that the key competencies of thinking, making meaning, relating to others, managing self, and participating and contributing are an integral part of classroom programmes and are assessed and reported on as part of the school’s assessment and reporting schedule.
▪ That the school recognises the importance of critical and creative
thinking skills to children’s learning and that a learning environment is created in each class that nurtures the development of these skills.
Classroom expectation will be: that an inquiry teaching approach will be a feature of all classes, particularly when teaching science, technology, health, social studies and the arts.

▪ That school recognises the importance of daily physical activity and the role it plays in the healthy development of young people.
Classroom expectation will be: each classroom will provide daily physical activity in the form of daily fitness as well as a weekly Physical Education programme. The school will also facilitate opportunities for extra mural sports.
▪ That the Arts have an important influence in our region and therefore have
an important place in our school.
Classroom expectation will be: that the arts be included in the classroom weekly timetable with provision made for extracurricular programmes in Visual Arts, Drama and Music.
▪ That the school will foster its rural, family-centred atmosphere and its role
as the hub of our community, establishing its identity with all members of the school community while gaining an appreciation of our local environment and how to conserve our natural resources.
Classroom expectation will be: that children will identify with our school and its place in our community. They will show pride in themselves and their school and set and maintain high standards in all areas including conservation of our local environment.
▪ That children should have a sound knowledge of IT and its place in our
society.
Classroom expectation will be: that ICT will be an integrated part of classroom programmes and explicit teaching of necessary skills will be provided to develop students’ base knowledge.
▪ That school recognises children with special abilities and provides
programmes that will extend them
Classroom expectation will be: that, as part of our needs assessment, consideration will be given to children with special abilities. Individual programmes will be developed and monitored, not only in core academic areas but in all areas, where the need arises.
▪ Tasman School, as appropriate to its community, will develop policies and
practices that reflect New Zealand’s cultural diversity and the unique position of Maori. In recognising the unique position of Maori culture, Tasman School will take all reasonable steps to provide instruction in tikanga (Maori culture) and Te Reo Maori (Maori language) for students whose parents request it.
Classroom expectation will be: that Te Reo and Tikanga Maori are integrated into classroom programmes and Te Reo be used in class in greetings, discussions and giving instructions.

Tasman School is governed by a Board of Trustees. This comprises of between 3 and 5 Trustees, the Principal and a Staff Representative. Board elections are held every three years, the most recent election being in 2011.
