Enrolment Enrolment Enrolment Enrolment
Students should be enrolled in all required units for their selected award course and Australian
Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved course.
Student AssessmentStudent AssessmentStudent AssessmentStudent Assessment
Each Unit Coordinator (lecturer) will provide a Unit Outline document at the first teaching event for
each unit. Details of how the unit will be assessed will be included in the Unit Outline document.
The precise method of assessment used in each unit of study varies depending on the type of work
covered, at the lecturer’s discretion. The unit of study will usually be assessed by a combination of
course work such as assignments and by examination. Assignment types used include essays, case
studies, oral presentations and tests.
To pass a unit of study, students must obtain a total aggregate mark from the coursework and
examination marks as specified in the Unit Outline.
All assessment items must be submitted.
Deferred examinations are normally held during the next available examination period.
Guide to Assignment PreparationGuide to Assignment PreparationGuide to Assignment PreparationGuide to Assignment Preparation
General informationGeneral informationGeneral informationGeneral information
Students should take care to work on presentation and referencing (refer to the Guide to the
Referencing and Presentation of Assignments). This Guide explains the application of the Harvard Harvard Harvard Harvard
SystemSystemSystemSystem of referencing.
The assessor may contact students to discuss verbally, or require further written work, to clarify the
content of any or all of the coursework.
ReferencesReferencesReferencesReferences
Discussions and arguments must be supported with sound reasoning and references to relevant
research and/or theory. Failure to read widely and cite references, where appropriate, seriously
diminishes the quality of work. Referencing should be of sufficient depth and quality and extend
beyond the prescribed text(s).
ExpressionExpressionExpressionExpression
Students are expected to have a good command of the English language, both oral and written.
Students who are unable to express themselves clearly and concisely will have difficulty in
communicating their ideas and arguments. Poor expression must invariably influence the marks
awarded.
If you have concerns regarding your progression in a unit or the course, please discuss with the unit
lecturer and your course coordinator. Early intervention / assistance is important. Guidance and
support are available from a number of sources and should be sought as early as possible.
ContentContentContentContent
Students should ensure that the answer demonstrates an understanding of the issue/problem and
should check that the question has been answered. Descriptive material unrelated to the question
will go unrewarded. Answers should be coherent and follow a logical line of discussion or argument.
Assignment presentationAssignment presentationAssignment presentationAssignment presentation
Students should be aware that technical and presentation deficiencies can limit the readers
understanding of your answers to questions or written assignments. This can lead to difficulties for
assessors in awarding marks for analyses and discussions. If text cannot be readily understood
because of poor presentation or technical deficiencies, that text is unlikely to be well rewarded.
Marks that might otherwise be awarded for an assignment may be deducted specifically for poor
assignment presentation, poor visual organisation and for poor spelling, punctuation and sentence
structure. Refer to the criteria and checklist below.
Assessment criteriaAssessment criteriaAssessment criteriaAssessment criteria
Content and presentation will be assessed based upon the following:
(i) Criteria for assessing content(i) Criteria for assessing content(i) Criteria for assessing content(i) Criteria for assessing content
• Identification of the relevant concepts/issues.
• Practical application of the relevant concepts
• Critical consideration and analysis of the issues, concepts, principles and procedures.
• The ability to answer the questions in a clear, concise and comprehensive manner.
• Evidence of creative/conceptual thinking (not just regurgitating the material presented in the
study guide and readings).
(ii) Criteria for assessing presentation:(ii) Criteria for assessing presentation:(ii) Criteria for assessing presentation:(ii) Criteria for assessing presentation:
• Use of the Harvard systemHarvard systemHarvard systemHarvard system of referencing when citing material.
• Logical sequence, presentation and organisation of ideas.
• Aesthetically pleasing layout that enhances the presentation of ideas and material.
• Overall presentation skills.
Grading of UnitsGrading of UnitsGrading of UnitsGrading of Units
Grades are awarded by the Assessment Committee at the end of each study block.
Grades will be awarded for each unit as detailed in the Unit Outline.
Grades are awarded at the following levels:
High Distinction (HD) 80 – 100
Distinction (DN) 70 – 79
Credit (CR) 60 – 69
Pass (PP) 50 – 59
Supplementary (NS) 40 – 49 At the discretion of Course Committee

Short Course units are generally graded Ungraded Pass (UP) or Fail (NN)
Course Progression RulesCourse Progression RulesCourse Progression RulesCourse Progression Rules
The progression of each student is considered at the conclusion of each study block. Progression of
the student through the course is dependent upon fulfilment of the following conditions:
• 100% attendance is compulsory for all units which result in the awarding of a STCW’10 as
amended, short course certificate.
• Attendance for re-enrolled units other than Short Courses will be at the discretion of the
Course Team.
• Although attendance is not a requirement for academic core units, certain components are
mandatory as per the Unit Outline.
• Satisfactory completion of a unit will mean that the student has satisfied the requirements as
set by the Unit Coordinator in the Unit Outline provided for that unit. Unless otherwise
specified, late submission of assignments will incur a penalty as detailed in the Unit Outline.
A student who is required to re-enrol in a unit shall complete all scheduled coursework assignments,
tests and examinations in order to pass that unit unless alternative arrangements have been
confirmed in writing with the Course Coordinator.
Review of student progress Review of student progress Review of student progress Review of student progress –––– Academic Progress ReviewAcademic Progress ReviewAcademic Progress ReviewAcademic Progress Review
At the end of each assessment period, the Assessment Committee shall review the progress of each
student enrolled for that period. There are two aspects of this review process:
• students who fail more than 50% of enrolled academic units
• students who fail a unit of study multiple times.
All students will be reviewed as part of the Academic Progress Review process.
Students who fall into either of the above categories will be considered during the Academic Progress
Review process following the grading of units.
The course committee will review previous academic progress and decide whether students may be
required to be placed on academic probation or may be excluded from the course.
You will be notified by email if you have been placed on probation or excluded.
It is very important that you take the necessary action as guided in the email in order that you can
improve your academic standing and be more successful in your future enrolled blocks.
AMSA Oral ExaminationAMSA Oral ExaminationAMSA Oral ExaminationAMSA Oral Examination
Oral examination sessions are booked at the end of each completing phase.
AMSA examiners usually attend AMC to carry out oral examinations or alternate arrangements can
be made by the students to sit their oral examinations at another AMSA office.
Students are required to have completed a number of assessments and processes prior to
undertaking AMSA oral examination.
• Completion of all required units for the AMSA approved program of study.
• Completion of all required STCW short courses.
• Completion of Task and Guided Study program where appropriate.
• Sea time assessment
• AMSA medical
On completion of the AMSA approved program and TAGS units a letter will be issued to students.
Pastoral, course and or unit issues
It is very important that any issues you may have, whether academic, learning, assessment or even
personal which may have an impact on your studies that you request assistance or advice as early as
possible.
If you need any further information about the course or experience any difficulties, please do not
hesitate to contact your course coordinator.
General InformationGeneral InformationGeneral InformationGeneral Information
1. Please read through this document over the next week and clarify any questions or doubts
with the Course Co-ordinator.
2. Browse through the weekly programme and note the important dates including the last day
of the semester/course. Do not make any travel plans before that. We need to retain the
flexibility to make changes to the programme.
3. Ensure you understand the course structure and timetabling.
4. Failing a unit means having to enrol and repeat that unit including all assessments, when the
unit is next offered.
5. Attendance in short courses is very important and is an AMSA requirement. Attendance will
be recorded in every unit and all sessions.
100% attendance is required for all short courses.
6. Main study block timetable will be published before the start of the block. Buses to other
campuses will leave from the front of the Swanson building (where the flagpoles are). Details
of departure times will be found on class lists on the short course noticeboard. Be punctual,
the bus will leave if you are not present at the time of departure.
7. When travelling to other campuses for safety short courses / practicals, make sure you are
dressed appropriately with proper footwear. Packed lunches for on campus students can be
ordered from the AMC cafeteria.
8. The main form of communication between University, AMC and students will be by email.
Notices will also be posted on course and short course notice boards. Monitor email and
noticeboards for new notices regularly. (Notice board and email) Check each area at least
once a day, we recommend twice a day. When a notice is posted, we expect you to have seen
the notice within 24 hrs. All notices relating to short courses will be posted on the short course
notice board.

All AMSA approved STCW Short Courses are programmed into the course
schedule.
Scheduling of short courses for individual students is dependent on course and
AMSA certificates of competency requirements.
You may have already completed STCW short courses at other Registered
Training Organisations during other courses.
Each of the required short courses for your AMSA certificate of competency has
different criteria in relation to pre requisites, length of validity, and AMSA
requirements.
Documents submitted during the course application process will have been
assessed and reviewed to establish the status of each of your short courses.
Students can apply for credit for short courses if you have completed the
required short course. The enrolments team would need to see you
immediately and they would collate the required evidence. The Manager of the
ERC or relevant Course Coordinator would approve this credit application
