I’ve had the opportunity to dive over two dozen jetties in five different states and I’m happy to share my fish-eye experiences so that you can learn where to best position your-self on any breakwater you decide to fish.

Breakwaters and jetties are like people; no two are identical and each one has their own distinct personality. Some, like the breakwaters at Menemsha on Martha’s Vineyard are short and compact, while the breakwaters off Rockport Harbor are both tall and deep. Many of the jetties or groins in New Jersey are low walls that serve as barriers. They are built out from the beach to check erosion and the drifting of sand. The trio of breakwaters near Point Judith, Rhode Island works in harmony to create the Harbor of Refuge. Shinnecock Inlet and Moriches Inlet on Long Island, and Barnegat in New Jersey are the gateways to large bay systems on one side and the open ocean on the outside. The common characteristics to all of these manmade structures are their ability to attract and hold fish.

I first started diving breakwaters in the ‘60s and the attraction has always been the di-versity of life that can be found among the cracks and crevices, especially at the base of the structure. Soon after these rock walls were built they were colonized by many different forms of marine life that provide food and habitat for juvenile fish and thus set up the base of the food chain. Today, lobsters, crabs and shrimp crawl about the bottom, while clams burrow in the sand, and mussels cling to the rocks. Weaving their way through the boul-ders you’ll find cunner, tautog, sea robins, black sea bass and eels. In addition to these com-mon residents and all the gamefish they attract, I’ve also seen immense roughtail sting-

Although the tip of the breakwater is an excellent place to fish, don’t overlook working the bowl on the side of the wall up against the beach. Bait will sometimes hold in that pocket, and big bass and blues will routinely patrol that area.

rays, sturgeon, triggerfish, sharks, huge ocean pout, gargantuan conger eels and in the ‘70s large goosefish (monkfish) were an ever present menace while night diving October through December. These manmade structures are an oasis in an otherwise sea of sand. In addition to striped bass, bluefish, fluke, flounder, bonito and false albacore, occasional catches of black drum, cobia, grouper and even tarpon have been taken off breakwaters far to the north of their normal range. If you want fish to come to you or you want to find them literally under your feet, fish a breakwater.

CAPE ANNE, MASSACHUSETTSIn Rockport an impressive series of breakwaters were completed in 1894 to form the

Sandy Bay National Harbor of Refuge. In addition to the two breakwaters on land there is a V-shaped wall extending northwest by west toward Andrews Point and southerly, the breakwater extends to Avery’s Ledge. The midsection of the breakwater is an impres-sive granite wall that stands high above the water, yet the majority of this structure is a submerged breakwater that is covered by high tide. Back in my spearfishing days I would make a yearly pilgrimage to Cape Anne to dive the clear, deep (60 feet along the inside edge), and cold water in search of codfish. It was always a thrill to dive amongst the enor-mous granite blocks where the elusive cod would hide in the shadows or emerge from the holes created by the juxtaposition of these mammoth stones. Like so many other break-waters I would find concentrations of fish in the very middle and at both ends of the struc-ture. In the ‘80s there were few tautog found that far north, however I would frequently find a dozen or more tog, all over 9 pounds, schooled up together at the northern tip of the center wall. Breakwaters are full of surprises.

POINT JUDITH, RHODE ISLANDEast WallIn contrast to the deep water that surrounds the Rockport breakwater, the Point

Judith Harbor of Refuge sits in relatively shallow water with the deepest spots around 20 feet deep. The series of three breakwaters is 2.5 miles long. The East Wall is located near the Point Judith Lighthouse. This breakwater features a sandy beach on its western side, and a boulder strewn stretch of beach sits on the eastern side. The inside, or harbor side of the wall, is very shallow and far less productive than the

Make sure the tail isn’t hanging

on the hooks, inspect the plug for

tears in the skin and keep an eye

on the waxed wrap; the last thing

you want to be doing is fishing an

ineffective lure.

And finally, after a night fishing

you need to properly care for the

skin plug in order to ensure it will

last. No matter how late it is or how

tired I am, when I have fished a skin

plug I toss it in a bag in the fridge

before going to sleep. The next day

I rinse the plug with freshwater,

hang it so any excess water drains

out and place the plug back in the

Zip-Lock bag in the freezer. Many

surfcasters freeze their skin plugs or

keep them in a salt slurry, but I find

this is not necessary when you take

the time to brine the skin in the first

place. To me freezing a wooden

plug that has possibly taken on

water is only going to damage it,

and when I have kept them in salt

I found the hooks and hardware

would corrode in short order.

iced over the Barnegat Light Reef,

and there was one report of a 32-

inch area rug being stuffed in a

cooler. “Out there it’s bucktails

armed with the 6-inch pink shine

Gulp! Swimming Mullet,” said Liza.

Blowfish are being caught in

decent sizes and numbers bayside

around the 42 Buoy and are still

being plucked off the Barnegat

Municipal Dock where crabbing is

still hot. Clamming is very good.

BARNEGAT“The amount of peanut bunker in

the bay is amazing, it’s like September,”

exclaims Capt. Alex aboard Lighthouse

Sportfishing, and it’s been steady action

with bluefish to 3 pounds. Along the south

jetty at the inlet, 3- to 4-pound blues are

tearing into white BKDs, and the skipper

had a very reliable report of sheepshead at

the tip of the south jetty. Fluking insofar as

keepers are concerned, has been very slow.

BARNEGAT LIGHTCapt. Ted and parties on the Super

Chic were offshore through the

weekend after tuna, sharks and tilefish,

but the skipper said that overall it was a

picky week in close with small bluefish,

fluke and sea bass. His canyon schedule

has kicked in and there are choice dates

available in late July and during August.

“Good wreckin’ this past week, and

one charter, the Rich Worley party

caught plenty of ling to 3 pounds and

had limits of sea bass to 3 pounds all

around,” reported Capt. Sam “The Slam”

Rescigno aboard the Mary M IV early

Saturday evening. The knuckleheads

were all over squid and clam baits, with

the red hake on the bergall strip take.

Adding to the meat pile were some

chub mackerel topping at a smidge

over 1 pound. He mentioned that good

numbers of close-to-legal porgies were

caught and he anticipates that bigger

scup will be showing soon.

“Quality sea bass and more keeper fluke,

and a lot of throwbacks. Plenty of action,”

enthuses a fired-up Gina from the Carolyn

Ann III, and Clifton’s Scott Weisz rocked the

house with a 6.73-pound fat mama, adding

to a limit catch of sea bass to 3 pounds.

Gina remarked that the bucktail/squid strip

combo was especially hot, but plenty of

flatties and sea bass were also being caught

with squid/spearing. It’s now a two sortie-

per-day schedule, the first departing at 8

a.m. and the second at 1 p.m.

Capt. Lenny on the Miss Barnegat Light

relayed that it continues a mix of short and

keeper fluke, but there are sea bass going

into the buckets. Bucktail/Gulp! and the

squid/spearing combo are fooling the

flatties, and the biscuits are inhaling squid.

SURF CITYJoe from Surf City Bait & Tackle

was as busy as a one-armed mate on

a bluefish boat when we called early

Friday morning. Customers were in for

Gulp!, squid, Fishbites, bunker, clams

and beach shark rigs, in addition crab

traps and drop lines. He said a big sand

tiger was caught and released the night

previous, and word among the sharking

sand soldiers was that the brown forces

were beginning to invade the island

beaches and the back bay. It’s a pick at

short and keeper fluke in the surf. Ditto

Gulp! Swimming Mullets. Kingfish are

making their way up from the lower

reaches of the island and are starting

to get picked off with Fishbites and

clam here and there from Surf City to

Harvey Cedars. Blues to 3 pounds are

being caught on fresh bunker chunks

and metals in the suds and along the

south jetty at Barnegat Inlet. Crabbing

is ranging from good to very good in

the bay, and the store’s weekly “Kids

Crabbing Contest” is underway.

SHIP BOTTOMJoe C. at Fisherman’s Headquarters

relays that there are fluke and cocktail blues

being caught along the island’s beaches,

the former with Bucktail/Gulp! The latter

putting the chomp to cut mullet and

bunker chunk baits. Flatties from 14 to 17

inches, along with the occasional keeper,

are nailing squid/killie and bucktail/Gulp!

along the south jetty at Barnegat Inlet, and

there have been a few weakfish caught in

the surf at Seventh Street in Barnegat Light.

To the south at Holgate, it’s an after dark

shark scene bayside with browns tearing

into mackerel and bunker chunks.

BEACH HAVENJim from Morrison’s Marina reports

spotty fluking along the beaches and up

at Barnegat Inlet, and a few slip holders are

scoring with football bluefin in the canyons.

“The 6-inch Gulp! grub in chartreuse

and new penny on a bucktail or as a teaser

is catching fluke to 4 pounds,” relays Capt.

Brant aboard the Miss Beach Haven,

adding that sea bass to 2-1/2 pounds

can’t keep from inhaling squid offerings.

The deeper waters of the inlets and the wrecks out front are now

where you will find your structure sitting, cool water loving big boys

of the fluke and sea bass variety.

This Week’s Best Bet

The flounder fishing in South Jersey

picked up nicely this past week and

the Absecon and Tuckerton Bays had

a number of anglers check in with

nice catches of flatfish. Winds were

cooperative and water temps were right

on for bottom bouncing at around 68 to

70 degrees. In addition to the back bay,

the wrecks out front gave some nice

fish too, with large bucktails or other live

offerings being responsible for some

doormats. Striper fishing continues to

wind down but some anglers up in the

Egg Harbor River or the Mullica are still

finding one or two 28 inchers to take.

Bluefish are all over and now their size

is down to the one-three pound range,

proof that they will stick it out for the

summer. Kingfish, some keeper fluke

and a short bass here and there are on

the beach, and weakfish are still all over,

with some tiderunners being found by

those sporting fresh shedders.

6) No conditions other than those set forth in this rate card shall be binding on the publisher unless specifically agreed to in writing by the publisher. Publisher will not be bound by conditions printed or appear-ing on order blanks or copy instructions which conflict with provisions of this rate card.

7) Publisher is not liable for delays in delivery and/or non-delivery in the event of acts of God, fire, flood, insurrection, riot, explosion, embargo, strikes, labor or material shortages, transportation interruption of any kind, or any condition beyond the control of publisher affecting produc-tion or delivery in any manner.

8) No contract will be accepted for a period longer than one year. Advance orders will be billed at prevailing rates when advertising is published.

9) All orders are subject to final acceptance at The Fisherman Corporate Headquarters.

10) The Fisherman makes no guarantee or representation as to the quantity and/or quality of visits, impressions, circulation, or other usage of The Fisherman magazine. thefisherman.com web site, Enewsletters, or Emails or of the advertisement unless The Fisherman expressly agrees otherwise in writing.

11) All issues relating to advertising will be governed by the laws of the State of New York applicable to contracts to be performed entirely therein.
