“We came into this market with no name rec-ognition and we knew we had to do something to let people know we were here and to start building a brand. Ingram’s comes to us with ideas and ad and sponsorship opportunities that others don’t match, and their programs val-idate our belief that we’re deal-ing with the right organization to help us build our brand in the marketplace.”
Jeff Spencer, VP, Holmes Mur-phy & Assoc. Overland Park, KS
“Ingram’s distin-guishes itself by offering clarity on complex topics, in particular, the coverage of the healthcare sector is a must read. Ingram’s was quick to recognize the importance of health and wellness to the suc-cess of businesses both from financial and workforce effec-tiveness perspectives. Patt Lilly, CEO St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce
“Ingram’s has seen and reported a hell of a lot of his-tory. Not just in the region, but in the publishing in-

By keeping up with the times. By sticking to their standards. By making certain the quality of their pub-lication exceeds the demands of their readership. “
Jeffrey Gitomer, author and sales training consultant

November 2015
Kamal Mikhail knows steel—its potential, its strength, its endurance.
In 2012, the Leawood, Kan., businessman had been an integral leader in
Kansas City’s commercial construction scene for decades.
He was also dying.
The cardiomyopathy diagnosed in 2000 had destroyed his heart. His
long-time cardiologist said nothing more could be done.
But this savvy businessman believed something could always be
done—with the same excellence and dedication he demanded of himself.
He sought advice from others who’d had similar heart problems. He
discovered some of the top programs were at Mayo Clinic in Boston and
Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
And right here in Kansas City at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart
Institute.
When Mikhail learned all six of the area’s cardiologists board certi-
fied in heart failure medicine were on staff at Saint Luke’s, he figured his
chances were excellent.
He met A. Michael Borkon, M.D., Saint Luke’s surgical director for
heart transplants, and was impressed by the entire heart team’s skill,
professionalism, and passion.
“The Saint Luke’s team saw the man, not the bad heart,” Mikhail,
now 71 years old, said. “I have daughters and a wife and three busi-
nesses with employees who count on me for their livelihoods. The other
doctor said I was dead. Dr. Borkon said, ‘We’re getting you a heart.’”
On April 21, 2012, Mikhail became the 540th patient to receive a
new heart at Saint Luke’s.
The right people
If you look strictly at data, it’s clear why Saint Luke’s Mid America
Heart Institute is one of the nation’s premier heart care institutes:
• Among the nation’s best heart failure outcomes
• The nation’s top 10 for heart transplant volumes—nearly 700 since
its first in 1985
• The first dedicated heart institute in the nation and one of the first
to address women’s heart health
• Among select facilities worldwide chosen for leading-edge clini-
cal trials
• A robust research program featuring two of the world’s most influ-
ential scientific minds, according to Thomson Reuters
Remarkable, yes, but Mikhail will tell you the Institute is so strong
because its foundation is built upon outstanding people.
“I have known a lot of doctors in my lifetime,” he said. “Never have
I been treated better than the care I received from every single person
at Saint Luke’s during the most difficult time of my life. There is no doubt
in my mind. They are simply the best.”
Mikhail likened it to smart business strategy. When seeking a busi-
ness partner, he looks for a company staffed by people with expertise,
history, and knowledge. He wants dedicated workers who know the
business inside out, upside down—those who spent years fine-tuning
their skills.
He wants a company staffed by experts with specialized knowledge
who can achieve desired results.
“Their attention to detail at Saint Luke’s is unprecedented,” he said.
“They don’t just do a procedure to build up their numbers. They wait for
the perfect match to ensure each person has the best chance.”
The right home
In fact, Mikhail was so impressed with Saint Luke’s heart team that
he now is a co-chair of the Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute
Ambassadors Group.
“I tell everyone who needs heart treatment, those here or coming
from overseas, to knock on the door in Kansas City first,” Mikhail said.
“You get the exact same expert care you’d get at Boston or Cleveland,
and nobody can top Saint Luke’s people.”
Saint Luke’s Health System is Kansas City’s only locally owned and
operated faith-based, nonprofit health system. The Ambassadors Group
hopes to build lodgings for family members who travel to Kansas City so
their loved ones can get lifesaving care.
Don’t tell Mikhail it can’t be done. He has made it his personal
mission to unite construction companies and make it happen.
“I call on all area construction companies to donate their overhead
and profit. Together we can build this and give back to our community
where we live and work,” he said. “What a great accomplishment we
can build together.”
For more information about the Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart
Institute Ambassadors Group, contact Susan Melton, senior director of
development, at 816-932-9083.

Armed Forces Bank recently sponsored—and hosted—the first ever Military Industry Outlook
forum in partnership with Ingram’s Magazine. As I look forward, it is clear that the military
will continue to be a core segment of the DFC family of banks. Understanding the impact of
the military in the communities we serve and the issues they are facing are important if we
are to truly “know our customer”.
I encourage you to read this summary of the forum. Like me, I’m sure you will find it insightful
and beneficial as we seek to meet the financial needs of these heroes.
Thanks for all you do.
