Andy Teitelbaum is in his 22nd season as the head coach of the Ohio State women’s rowing team. As the only head coach of the Buckeyes since the program’s inception in 1995, Teitelbaum led the Scarlet and Gray to three consecutive NCAA titles (2013-15) and four straight Big Ten championships and a total of seven B1G titles overall, a conference record. Teitelbaum-led boats have won seven national titles and 33 conference titles in event grand finals. Under his guidance, Ohio State is one of only four programs to qualify for the NCAA championships for 17 consecutive seasons, joining the ranks of Brown, Princeton and Washington.

Teitelbaum, a six-time conference- and five-time central-region coach of the year, has coached athletes to 42 All-America awards, including 28 first-team recognitions. Additionally, Teitelbaum-coached athletes have earned 69 All-Big Ten awards and 66 All-Region accolades.

Academically, more than 198 student-athletes have been named Academic All-Big Ten honorees. Teitel-baum has mentored over 406 Buckeyes to Ohio State Scholar-Athlete laurels.

The first varsity eight won its third-straight national title in 2016 to become the first 1V8 boat in NCAA history to win the title three years in a row. The first varsity eight boat for Ohio State has been more than dominant over the past three years; it has combined to go 129-2 in that time span including undefeated campaigns in 2014 and 2015. No matter what varsity boat it may be, Teitelbaum has directed all of his crews to a winning clip of higher than 70 percent in his 21 years of coaching. The 2V4 (301-91/76.8 per-cent) has the highest percentage followed by the 2V8 (638-195/76.6 percent), 1V8 (679-238/74.0 percent) and 1V4 (590-246/70.6 percent).

OSU racked up its fourth-straight Big Ten title in 2016 as well, setting a conference record for most titles in a row. Titles from the 1V8, 2V8, 1V4 and 3V4 boats propelled the Buckeyes to a resounding victory. Catherine Shields was named the Big Ten and Ohio State Athlete of the Year for the 2015-16 calendar year. Shields, along with Sarah Asad, Sarah Davis and Stephanie Williams, were all named Division I Pocock First Team All-Americans by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.

In due time after the 2016 season, Teitelbaum was named the Joy of Sculling Conference Women’s Coach of the Year in December of 2016. It was the first time in his illustrious career that Teitelbaum received the honor.

In 2015, Ohio State became the first team in NCAA rowing history to win three consecutive national titles with a resounding victory at the NCAA championships last May. Along with their historic third team title, the Buckeyes also claimed an individual national title in the first varsity eight, a runner-up finish in the second varsity eight and fifth place in the first varsity four. The historic win was capped in grand fashion when the first varsity eight defeated previously unbeaten and No. 1-ranked California to cap a second consecutive undefeated season.

OSU also collected a third Big Ten title in a row and fourth in five seasons in 2015, becoming the first team in conference history to win three consecutive team titles. The Buckeyes totaled a regatta-record 186 points and claimed gold in six of seven events, also a B1G record.

Four Buckeyes – Holly Norton, Ashley Bauer, Sarah Davis and Catherine Shields were named All-Americans. Bauer earned Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year honors and became the fifth OSU rower to be named Big Ten Rowing Athlete of the Year. Davis was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Teitelbaum and the Buckeyes made history with their second-consecutive national title in 2014, becoming the fifth team to win back-to-back NCAA championships and the first since Brown in 2008. With gold medal finishes in the first varsity eight and second varsity eight, the Buckeyes became the fourth team in NCAA history to win both events at the national regatta in the same year. The first varsity eight ended the season with an unblemished record for its first national title in the event, becoming the second-consecu-tive Scarlet and Gray crew to finish the season undefeated after the second varsity eight did so in 2013.

Shields, Bauer, Norton, Victoria Lazur and Claire-Louise Bode collected All-Americans accolades. Shields received Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year honors and was named Big Ten Rowing Athlete of the Year.

A fifth Big Ten title and third in four years was also won in 2014 as team earned B1G titles in five events en route to 164 points and a comfortable victory.

The Buckeyes broke through on the national stage in 2013, capturing their first NCAA team championship in addition to national titles in the first varsity four and second varsity eight. In doing so, the Buckeyes became the first Big Ten rowing program and the first women’s program at Ohio State to win an NCAA championship. In a record-setting year for Ohio State rowing, the Buckeyes won a second-consecutive national title in the first varsity four, which had previously brought home the program’s first national title in 2012. In addition, the second varsity eight closed out the season with an unbeaten record and its first national title. Bode became the first rower under Teitelbaum to earn Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year honors and the third rower to be named Big Ten Rowing Athlete of the Year.

Ohio State captured its fourth conference title at the 2013 Big Ten Championships. In a tightly contested championship, the Buckeye first varsity eight clinched the team title after placing first in the final race

of the morning to tally 63 points toward the team total and championship record 160 points. Altogether, Teitelbaum coached five of seven crews to gold medals.

The 2011 Big Ten Championship at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind., was won by the Buckeyes in dramatic fashion, eventually paving the way for a 10th-place finish overall at the NCAA championships. No. 10 Ohio State held a slim three-point lead over Wisconsin and a nine-point advantage over Michigan heading into the final race. A win or runner-up finish from the first varsity eight by the Buckeyes, Badgers or Wolverines would lock up the championship for that team. Ohio State crossed the line in 6:20.53 to take second place behind Michigan State, capturing its third Big Ten title.

Ohio State won its second Big Ten championship in 2006 courtesy of first-place finishes by the first and second varsity eights. Teitelbaum was named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, complementing his three CRCA Central Region Coach of the Year awards (2002-04). The 2006 campaign also saw Ninett Kossowsky garner Big Ten Rower of the Year accolades.

The Buckeyes reached the top of the national rankings in 2004, holding the No. 1 ranking for five-consecutive weeks. The first varsity eight went undefeated in dual races (8-0) throughout the regular season, garnering four-consecutive Big Ten Boat of the Week honors. Annabelle Fago, a member of the first varsity eight, became the second Buckeye to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Year accolades (Phaedra Giblin, 2000).

Teitelbaum and the Buckeyes’ first Big Ten championship came in 2002 after four crews (first novice eight, second varsity four, second varsity eight and first varsity eight) won their respective Grand Final races. Conny Kirsch became Ohio State’s first Big Ten Rower of the Year honoree and was the first rower in conference history to earn three First Team All-Big Ten honors.

Six of Teitelbaum’s former student-athletes have earned the prestigious distinction of being inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame. Kirsch was the program’s first inductee in 2007, while Maxi Meissner (2000-03) solidified her place in Ohio State athletics history with her 2008 honor. In 2009, Karla Fiserova (2001-03) became the third rower to earn the coveted status. Former assistant coach Diana “Didi” Albrecht (2002-05) was inducted as part of the Class of 2011 while Ninett Kossowsky (2002-06) was inducted as a member of the Class of 2013. Annabelle Fago (2004-07) is the most recent Hall of Fame addition as a member of the 2015 class.

A native of Plainview, N.Y., Teitelbaum spent seven years as head coach of the Rutgers women’s rowing team prior to taking over as head coach at Ohio State. At Rutgers, he developed a competitive program consisting primarily of novice walk-ons. His teams took Top-10 finishes at the Eastern championships in five of his seven years as head coach and Rutgers won the Women’s Points Trophy at the 1995 IRA Regatta.

Before taking over as head coach at Rutgers, Teitelbaum served as the freshman lightweight men’s coach. Under his leadership, Rutgersr crews raced for a dual record of 15-1, with his first crew posting an undefeated regular-season record. The team went on to take a silver medal at the Eastern championships.

Teitelbaum graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Rutgers in 1987. He resides in Columbus with his wife, Jennifer. He has a son, Benjamin.

MADELINE DAVIS

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH4TH SEASONPRINCETON, 2009

ASSISTANT COACHES

ANNA GOODALE

ASSISTANT/NOVICE COACH2ND SEASONSYRACUSE, 2005

Madeline Davis is in her fourth season with the Buckeyes. 2017 will be her first season with the title of associate head coach after she was promoted in August of 2016. Davis joined the Buckeye staff after spending three seasons as the assistant lightweight women’s rowing coach at Stanford University.

Her third season in Columbus, history was made. For the third-straight season, Ohio State’s first varsity boat ran away with a national title, a feat that had never been accomplished in NCAA history. The 1V8 knocked off California in the final race of the season with a time of 6:19.04 to defeat the Bears by more than two seconds. Davis was an instrumental cog in helping Ohio State secure its fourth-straight conference titles receiving wins from the 1V8, 2V8, 1V4 and 3V4 boats.

In her second season with the Buckeyes in 2015, Ohio State became the first team in NCAA rowing history to win three consecutive national titles. Along with their historic third team title, the Buckeyes also claimed an individual national title in the first varsity eight, a runner-up finish from the Davis-coached second varsity eight, and fifth place in the first varsity four. The Scarlet and Gray also earned a third consecutive Big Ten title and conference-record sixth overall, winning six of seven events at the B1G regatta.

A national title was also won in 2014, the debut season for Davis in Columbus. With gold medal finishes in the first varsity eight and second varsity eight, the Buckeyes became the fourth team in NCAA history to win both events at the national regatta in the same year. Ohio State also claimed the fifth Big Ten title in school history as the team posted wins in five grand finals.

At Stanford, Davis assisted the Cardinal lightweight eight to three consecutive national championships. She coached nine student-athletes to Pocock Lightweight All-America honors.

Davis also coached three lightweight boats with the 2013 U.S. Under-23 National Team. The Lightweight Women’s 4x, 2x and 1x all qualified for the 2013 Under-23 World Rowing Championships held in Linz, Austria.

Prior to her time with Stanford and the U.S. National Team, Davis spent a season as the head coach of Girls’ Varsity Crew at The Hun School of Princeton in New Jersey. While there, she coached the Varsity 4+ to an undefeated dual season and its first invitation to the US Rowing youth national championships in nearly a decade. Davis also assisted with coaching duties for the Mercer Junior Rowing Club and the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association.

Davis holds experience as a lightweight rower at both the collegiate and international level. At Princeton University, she was a four-year varsity letterwinner, three-year member of the lightweight varsity eight and an Eastern Sprints and IRA champion. Davis served as the team captain during her senior season, garnering All-America honors. After graduation in 2009, Davis competed for the United States National Team at the Under-23 World Row-ing Championships in the Lightweight 2x.

Davis is a native of West Chester, Pa.

Olympic gold medalist and four-time World Rowing Champion Anna Goodale is in her second season as an assistant coach with the Ohio State women’s rowing team. Goodale works primarily with the Buckeye novices.

Goodale joined the Buckeye coaching staff after spending the 2014-15 school year as an assistant coach at Gonzaga. She helped the Bulldogs to a 17th-place team finish – the best in school history – at the 2015 NCAA Championships. Gonzaga earned an automatic birth to the national championships after winning the West Coast Conference title.

One of the most decorated U.S. rowers in recent memory, Goodale enjoyed an outstand-ing career with the U.S. National Team prior to coaching. She was a member of the U.S. women’s eight that captured gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as a member of four world championships and three world cups in the women’s eight. She was also a key contributor in record-setting boats at the Henley Regatta and the Head of the Charles Regatta.

A four-year member of the rowing team at Syracuse from 2001-2005, Goodale, a former walk-on, worked her way to First Team All-America honors in 2003 and 2005 and second-team accolades in 2004. In 2005 she received the Soladay Award, the most prestigious award given to a student-athlete by the Department of Athletics at Syracuse.

In addition to rowing at an elite level, Goodale is also an established illustrator. An illustra-tion major at Syracuse, she works primarily in watercolor and pastel though is experienced in many mediums.

Goodale, a native of Camden, Maine, was inducted into the Maine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. She has a son, Corbin Avery.

Taylore Urban is in her second season as a graduate assistant with the Ohio State women's rowing team. She previously served as a volunteer coach with the Buckeyes dur-ing the 2015 national championship season.

Urban was a four-year member of the Buckeyes from 2011-2014, earning three varsity let-ters and helping the Scarlet and Gray to back-to-back NCAA team championships in 2014 and 2013. She was a three-time NCAA event champion, winning a national title with the second varsity eight in 2014 and back-to-back titles with the first varsity four in 2013 and 2012. She also won three Big Ten event titles (2V8 2014, 1V4 2012-13).

Academically, Urban excelled as well, earning Ohio State Scholar-Athlete accolades all four seasons along with three Academic All-Big Ten awards. She graduated in Spring 2014 with a degree in human nutrition.

A native of Medina, Ohio, Urban is the daughter of Dave and Kim Urban.

SEASON SNAPSHOTCrew is a noun that refers to one type of rowing. Crew refers to the larger rowing boats, Fours and Eights, which are typical of collegiate competition. Rowing is the name that the NCAA has adopted for the sport and uses officially in its championships.

Within the collegiate environment, Eights and Fours are the primary events that are contested. Those events are then broken down into Varsity, Junior (Second) Varsity, First Novice and Second Novice, as well as a lightweight category - which presents athletes who weigh less than 130 pounds. Varsity athletes are experienced rowers, whether they are freshmen or upperclassman, while novices are first-time, usually freshmen or sopho-more rowers.

Rowing encompasses sweeping (one oar per person) and sculling (two oars per person). In college rowing, the athletes compete in only sweeping events. The larger boats usually have coxswains, who steer the boat. The minimum and most advantageous weight for a female coxswain is 100 pounds. They can either sit in the front (stern) or back (bow) of the boat.

When watching a team row, look for good timing. See if all the oars and bodies are moving together. Technique and synchronization are keys to being successful. Not only does each member have to do her part, but the crew must always work in sync. All strokes must be simultaneous; one rower can make the difference for the entire crew if they do not work together.

Head Races: Head races are traditionally held in the fall. Boats cross the starting line at full speed, separated by intervals of roughly 15 seconds, and usually navigate three miles of river around bends and under bridges. The crew in each event that completes the course in the shortest amount of time wins.

Sprints: Sprints are the primary mode of racing in spring regattas. In collegiate competition, these races are contested over 2,000 meters with a course of four to seven lanes. Depending on the venue, the start may be floating or staked and the lanes may be buoyed or unmarked.

Indoor Competition: An indoor regatta is a 2,000-meter race on ergometers or rowing machines. A rower’s primary form of winter training is erging.

Bow: the forward end of the boat which crosses the finish line first; the rower in the seat nearest the forward end of a shell who typically has a quick catch, stable technique and a shorter arc.

Blade: the end of the oar which pulls the boat through the water.

Bucket rigging: two riggers on the same side next to each other instead of alternated.

Coxswain (cox): the person who steers the boat. The coxswain either sits in the stern or lies in the bow giving commands to the rowers.

Ergs: short for ergometer; a land based rowing machine used for training that simulates the rower’s action in the boat and measures various items such as power, length, frequency, distance and time.

Lightweight: a crew on which each athlete weighs under a specific amount (130 pounds for women).

Novice: a rower in the first year of competition.

Regatta: the name of rowing events in which several crews compete.

Repechage: a second chance race for those crews which do not automatically advance to the finals of an event. Rigger: the metal extensions protruding from the sides of the boat.

Run: the distance the shell moves during one stroke.

Sculling: a type of rowing where each rower uses two oars.

Shell: another word for the rowing boat. It seats nine people for an Eight and five people for a Four, and ranges in length from 45 feet for a Four to 58 feet for an Eight.

Stern: the back of the boat; the end the rowers face during competitions.

Sweeping: a type of rowing where each rower has one oar.

Varsity: the collegiate rower who competes beyond the novice level. Eights (8+) and fours (4+) are the most common collegiate competitions and the two events held at the NCAA championships. The plus indicates a coxswain on board.
