40 years ofcreative music40 years of defending the idea of collective music, sometimes spectacular, sometimes very intimate, both written and im-provised, to be shared with au-diences from far and wide. Ima-ginative, concrete, often playful ideas, emanating from the complex and generous spirit of the collective.

40 years of working with others, of opening up to mul-tiple forms of expression such as painting, literature, cinema, dance, theatre, or gastronomy. Of envisaging music not as an art above other arts, but as an art amongst others.

40 years and still no cri-sis! The Arfi collective is in permanent flux…it is an incredible human and ar-tistic adventure, and that’s undoubtedly what keeps it going.

Les Hommes... maintenant ! (Men, now!)

Arfi's large ensemble excentric theater-concert> On tour 2017/18

The most recent creation from “La Marmite Infernale” (ARFI’s grand orchestra), with the collaboration of stage director Jean-Paul Delore, C. Laval (wardrobe designer) and F. Besson (lighting).

They advance, they halt, they move around the stage. These are men. Sometimes they talk amongst themselves. These are the men from ARFI. Their characters are portrayed by their costumes. They are knights of their instru-ments. An eccentric army of ten thousand pins. They march, they come and go, moving back and forth and in all directions. As they enter they seize the spotlight, juggling their music amongst them. They’re kind, funny, unified, cruel, jealous, naive... they are Les Hommes... maintenant. A series of living pictures, sketches of a most musical life. Mu-sicians that are so very human, musicians so very alive.

“ La Marmite’s music is just as beautiful here as anywhere else, skilfully mixing its sources through the original expression of precision in freedom, rhythms and sounds which are theirs alone and which today make them one of the most exciting big bands there is.” M. Gillot

Dark PoeAn extraordinary story, a sensory experience.

G. Grenard (Trumpet & slide trumpet), C. Gibert (Saxophone, clarinet & bass clarinet), X. Garcia (Sampler, traitements, laptop), J-M. François (co-medie), G. Keller (voice, pipe), N. Pellier (drum, percussion) > Premiere 25, 26, 27/04/17, Théâtre Comédie Odéon (Lyon)> New CD 2017

Plunged into total blackness, the public takes part in a musical reading of one of Poe’s short stories (Ligeia, 1838.) The very darkness of the text naturally implies a darkened atmosphere, but the goal here isn’t only to send a shiver down your spine. Without vision our other senses are heightened. The show comprises three sound sources: the reading of the text, roaming music and an electro-acoustic piece. The sounds may emerge from anywhere in the concert hall. During the show, an actor threads their way through the public, a mo-bile troublemaker that plays on the senses of hearing, touch and smell.

O. Bost (tb, prepared guitar, sound objects), G. Grenard (tp, tuba), E. Vagnon (alto and bari-tone sax,), D. Grange (games, lights), J. Lopez (live video, perc).

After the lunar voyage and the fantasti-cal poetry of Georges Méliès, re-visited in the video-concert “M. Méliès & Géo Smile”, the same team is back, embarking on dangerous adventures in the footsteps of King Kong. What stays hidden in the unexplored depths of this savage beast’s nature? We’ll embark on a voyage to find out in the company of brass-playing ar-tillery-men, an incredible showman and a percussive video-artist: 5 mischievous re-inventors will be working behind the décor of this monument of cinema and shaking things up in order to re-discover the heroine... and more than that, re-exa-mine the themes of this huge iconogra-phic fresco.

Villerd /Ayler Project IIMusic is the healing of the universe

G. Villerd (tenor sax), C. Rollet (drums), B. Santacruz (b), O. Bost (guit), Q. Rollet (sopranino sax).

> Premiere 2017

“The joy, the enthusiasm and the generous welcome from audiences when we perfor-med our first work (Villerd/Ayler Quartet) mean that I know for sure that the music of Albert Ayler is universal and wonderful to play and to share. With this new expe-rimental group, I put together a band that will be able to maximise the energy, genero-sity and poetry of this fantastically inven-tive spirit. This new performance will fea-ture our passionate playing of tunes such as Angels, Bells, Spirits, Holy family, Omega, and many others. Ayler invented a new world of music, where themes from New Orleans, military marches and wes-tern national anthems are the driving force behind the breath, the exaltation, the de-sire to communicate joy and love through music. Albert Ayler believed his music to be joyous, simple and easy... and it is, ob-viously”. G. Villerd

Actuel Remix #03Ensemble Modern Live Remix

Actuel Remix: X. Garcia and G. Villerd (laptops).Ensemble Modern: M. M. Kasper (cello), J. Schwarz (bassoon), G. Panagioditis (violin), R. Römer (perc), D. Wiesner (flutes).

> Premiere 9/02/17, Frankfurter Positionen festival (Frankfurt - Germany)

The Actuel Remix duo revisits the most impor-tant pieces of contemporary music, re-mixing them with the work of some current big names of electro music. After the first opus #01 Metropolis (remix of the music of Iannis Xenakis with that of Richie Hawtin in the film by Fritz Lang), the group has been working on the oeuvre of Heiner Goebbels, mixing it with the music of Paco Osuna and Plastikman (#02 Heiner Goebbels remix). The new project features the Ensemble Modern, the famous German contemporary music orchestra. Five musicians from the ensemble have come up with compositions that Actuel Remix sample and remix with the electronic music of several emble-matic figures from the techno-trance scene (Mr Oizo, Thomas Schumacher, Fat Boy Slim...).

A cycle of 10 cine-concerts

> 26/03, 16/04, 07 & 28/05, 18/06, 9/07, 20/08, 10/09, 01 & 15/10 2017, Théâtre Comédie Odéon (Lyon)

Since first teaming up with Cuirassé Po-temkine in 1987, Arfi has put together a re-pertoire of cine-concerts. Far from being just a passing fad, the idea has been to offer a whole different perspective on films: through the presence of musicians and in the modernity of the compositions, the cinema becomes a living entity.

To celebrate its 40 years of existence, the col-lective would like to share the magic of the cine-concert through a cycle of ten sessions, alternating between “travelling backwards” with works from the classic Arfi repertoire: Les Contes Persans, Felix the Cat, Cinérir'Arfi, Nanouk of the North, Avril l'Enchanteur and “travelling ahead”, with several premieres and new items: The Other Kong, Steamboat, Bobines Mélodies 2, Fantasmagories by S. de Chómon, Les Raisins de la déraison.

A collective creation to celebrate Chaplin: The Immigrant.

2017, will also mark another “anniversary”, the death of Charles Spencer Chaplin (alias Charlie Chaplin) 40 years ago. Although The Immi-grant was first seen on our screens 100 years ago (in 1917), its subject matter is more relevant than ever. This year, each show at the Théâtre Comé-die Odéon will be opened by a different duo pre-senting its own musical take on this 25 minute film. 10 duos, 10 different visions, 10 chances to rediscover a film which many regard as one of Chaplin’s first masterpieces.

Rewiews of Arfi

Arfi’s musicians regularly perform on stages throughout the world (Africa, Brazil, Asia, Europe...). The collective has the advantage of a wide-ranging musical prowess, and is able to offer tours where the same musicians present several different repertoires. Thanks to the meetings with other artists, various collabora-tive ventures have seen the light of day, thus enriching the collective palette. This year the musicians of Actuel Remix will be involved in a Franco-German collaboration with the En-semble Modern group, and the Spanish festi-val Jazzaldia will host Arfi for an exceptional appearance in July 2017.

AssociationResearchImaginaryFolklore

Musicians in collectifProfessional musicians Association since its foundation in 1977, Arfi is one of the eldest French collective, maybe European, of jazz and impro-vised music. Its longevity can be explained by the musicians character, all composers and impro-visers, and most of all by the quality of their relationship, based on a common passion:

Research, constantly boosted, for new ener-gies to build music (modelling sounds, shapes, overcoming chance...), to open their mind to other arts (cinema, dance, theatre, literature, visual arts, cuisine, photography...), and other fields of music: traditional (South Africa, Brazil, Ukraine...), popular (brass bands, film music...), contemporary (European improvisers and composers, electro-nica...)

... for an Imaginary Folklore. They state, despite a so-called compulsory modernity, that they defend « popular » music (at least those that let imagine something), a difficult yet passionate goal. They rely on diversity and cohesion, anar-chy and discipline, doubt and confidence. Many contradictions that one can’t sew up without a strong sense of collective.
