Students with Disabilities

Osgoode Hall Law School has an ongoing commitment to social justice and to the recognition of the dignity and worth of every person. It seeks to provide accessible education, responsive to the unique strengths and needs of each individual student and attentive to the removal of barriers to full inclusion for persons with disabilities. York University has a range of resources to assist students with physical, mental, psychiatric and learning disabilities in achieving their educational objectives, including within clinical programs. Students with disabilities requiring accommodation in a clinical program are encouraged to get in touch with any or all of the following: the director of the program in which you are enrolled, Nancy Sperling in the Student Services Office, or your disability counsellor at CDS.

The Assistant Dean, Students or Associate Dean (Students) may grant an exemption to this policy, with the consent of the Academic Director(s) of the Osgoode Clinical or Intensive program(s) concerned and only if the application for an exemption is received prior to the student accepting the offer with the clinical or intensive program. No applications for exemption will be entertained once the student has accepted the position.

The Anti-Discrimination Program is an exciting collaboration between Osgoode and the Human Rights Legal Support Centre. The Centre offer human rights legal services to individuals throughout Ontario who have experienced discrimination contrary to the Ontario Human Rights Code. The program offers students the opportunity to develop specialized knowledge of anti-discrimination law and to see an administrative law process from beginning to end. Students participate in the Centre’s public inquiries service and are responsible for conducting detailed legal interviews on files that are referred from intake. In addition, students draft legal documents, partner with a Centre lawyer to prepare and attend a mediation and partner with a lawyer on a file that is scheduled for hearing by the Tribunal.

CLASP is an interdisciplinary team where students work with low-income individuals and families from the community in a variety of roles; initial intake interviews, researching and preparing a file for trial and representing clients before courts and tribunal. CLASP enables students to get a true taste of what it’s like to practice law. Second and third-year students apply to be Division Leaders in one of the four divisions: Administrative, Criminal, Immigration or Family. In addition to their file work, Division Leaders also participate in law reform, community development, and public legal education initiatives. The Disability Law Intensive (DLI) is offered in partnership with ARCH Disability Law Centre. Students begin their placement at ARCH during the first week of the Fall term until the end of the academic year on a part-time basis – 2 full days a week. Participants will spend one semester performing direct client services work and one semester engaged in law and policy reform. They will work directly with at least one staff lawyer at ARCH who will provide guidance and review their work. The program encourages critique and reflection of social justice and the eradication of barriers facing people with disabilities. Students derive satisfaction in working towards the removal of barriers that affect “the minority that everybody joins.” - D. This full year, 9-credit clinical program seeks to respond to the need for high-quality, gender-based legal representation of women who have experienced violence and to facilitate students’ acquisition of the specialized knowledge, skills, and value base required for such representation. The program is a partnership between Osgoode and the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic. The program is situated within a framework of “feminist advocacy,” inviting reflections on what feminism might mean for how we think about lawyering, about legal ethics, access to justice, and the connections between our work with individuals and the structures of power that create and sustain inequality and oppression. The clinical work, of approximately 8-9 hours/week, is comprised of a combination of legal intake shifts at the Clinic, work on Clinic files and law reform initiatives, assisting with a new early advice program for sexual assault survivors, and court and other visits. Students are exposed to the issues and complexities of addressing access to justice for clients in various legal domains—family, immigration, criminal, and child welfare—as well as at the intersections of these areas of law.
