PHI SIGMA IOTAIn 1996, Carroll College’s Department of Languages and Literature was granted the Gamma Rho chapter from the Phi Sigma Iota International Honor Society, the first to be chartered in Montana. Phi Sigma Iota is the highest academic honor in the field of foreign languages. The Honor Society recognizes outstanding accomplishment in the study or teaching of any of the academic fields related to foreign language, literature, or culture. This international society has as its ideals and purpose the recognition of outstanding ability and attainments in the study and teaching of foreign languages, the stimulation of advanced pursuits and individual research in this discipline, and the promotion of cultural enrichment and a sen-timent of international amity derived from the knowledge and use of foreign language. Educators' Award of Academic ExcellenceThe Educators’ Award of Academic Excellence is earned by students who are pursuing a program of study that leads to teacher licensure. Students receiving this award achieved exceptional individual performance both in their Carroll College coursework and on the nationally standardized Praxis Subject Assessments for which the candidate is seeking educator licensure. The recipients of this award have achieved cumulative grade point av-erages of at least 3.5 and have achieved a Praxis Subject Assessment score that placed them in the top 25 percent of the test-takers in North America during the preceding year.

FATHER BUTKO AWARDS IN FRESHMAN WRITINGTo honor the best writers enrolled in Freshman Composition during the current academic year, Carroll’s Department of Languages and Literature sponsors the Freshman Essay Contest. NELLIE CROWLEY EDUCATOR AWARD The Nellie Crowley Educator Award is earned by stu-dents who are pursuing a program of study that leads to teacher licensure. Students receiving this award have fulfilled, on their first attempts, all segments of a rigorous, multifaceted, departmental admis-sion-to-student-teaching assessment. Typically, three percent of candidates are able to reach all thresholds on their first attempts. The award is named for Nellie Crowley, who, in 1961, implemented and directed the first elementary-education program at Carroll College. Courtenay Perry
RAYMOND G. HUNTHAUSEN OUTSTANDING COLLEGIATE CITIZENSHIP AWARDThe Raymond G. Hunthausen Award for citizenship recognizes Carroll students who have made outstanding contributions to their college and community through exceptional participation in activities, services, and programs. The Hunthausen Award is named in honor of Raymond G. Hunthausen, Carroll alumnus, former faculty member, and eighth president of Carroll College, who himself served as a model for this award during his years at Carroll.

FORENSICS AWARDSThe 2016-2017 was another fine season for the Talking Saints. The team qual-ified for the National Individual Events Tournament and four teams competed at the National BP Debate championships in Denver in April. The “regular season” included sharing the Northwest regional championship, the 27th consecutive year the team has won or shared the regional title. SIGMA THETA TAU The Zeta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau was formed through the joint ef-forts of the nursing faculty at Carroll College and Montana State University School of Nursing to encourage and recognize superior scholarship and/or leadership achievement in nursing at either the undergraduate or graduate level in the state of Montana. PJ HART AWARDDr. Aubrey Fine established the PJ Hart Loving Bond Award in 2011, in memory of his beloved therapy dog, a black Labrador retriever named Hart. Dr. Fine is viewed as an international ambassador for the field of animal-assisted therapy. His work and insight into the bond has placed him at the cutting edge in the field. The PJ Hart Loving Bond Award is an annual scholarship given to one graduating Anthrozoology student in recognition of scholarship, leadership, and inherent understanding of the powerful rela-tionship between humans and animals. The recipient will have demonstrated compas-sion for animals, as well as theoretical and application competencies in Anthrozoology.Ariana Richards
