Understanding Healthy Kids Colorado Survey
School and District Reports
Background.
The Healthy Kids Colorado Survey (HKCS) collects anonymous health information from middle and high school students throughout the state. HKCS is
conducted during odd-numbered years, most recently in the fall of 2017. More than 40,000 students in 252 middle and high schools participated in the
fall 2015 survey. The questionnaire measures a wide range of health behaviors and factors that affect a student's health, including physical activity,
nutrition, health care, bullying, mental health, tobacco and substance use, sexual health (high school only), and family and school protective factors.
HKCS is directed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), Colorado Department of Education (CDE), and Colorado
Department of Human Services (CDHS) and Department of Public Safety (CDPS). The survey is administered by staff at the University of Colorado
Anschutz Medical Campus in the Community, Epidemiology & Program Evaluation Group (CEPEG).
Questionnaire, Parental Consent, and Survey Administration.
The majority of HKCS questions are drawn from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, the
nation's largest adolescent health survey, which has been ongoing for more than 20 years. Other questions in HKCS have been added with community
input to meet additional data needs in Colorado.
The questionnaire is available in English and Spanish and takes about 45 minutes, or one class period, to complete by paper and pencil. (Students in a
few schools completed the survey online in 2017 as a pilot program.) Teachers are given an instructional video and script to read to students that
emphasizes the anonymous and voluntary nature of the survey. Parental consent procedures are followed according to each district’s guidelines, with a
minimum of two weeks notification in advance of the administration date. The middle school questionnaire contains 65 questions that are age-
appropriate for younger adolescents, and the shorter length as compared to high school allows students more time to answer each question.
HKCS selects a sample of schools to represent the state of Colorado. The HKCS was also available to other schools at no cost. Many schools
chose to participate in order to receive local data to track important health behaviors and protective factors. Within selected schools, a
sample of classrooms were selected to participate in order to minimize the time commitment from schools. Classrooms are ineligible to
participate if the students are unable to complete the survey by themselves in English or Spanish. If a parent chooses not to allow their child
to participate, or if the student declines to participate, they are asked to sit quietly at their desk and work on other school work.

EXAMPLE: How to Read a Table.
A. Health behavior includes the table number and a description of the behavior being reported.
B. Estimate or Percentage: Percentage of students who reported a given behavior or answer. A period (.) appears whenever results meet the
suppression criteria and are not shown to protect student confidentiality.
C. Total Responses: The number of students in the school or district who answered the question being reported. Some students may have chosen to
skip some questions, for a variety of reasons.
D. 95% confidence interval: These numbers define the range that most likely contains the true percentage for your school or district. These intervals
are also called “margins of error” and indicate the precision of the estimate. A larger range indicates less precision, a smaller range indicates more
precision.
B. Estimate C. Total number of student responses A. Health behavior
D. Confidence interval
iii
Key Definitions.
Weighting: The results in the current report are adjusted (“weighted”) so that the answers can represent all students in your school or district. The
process of weighting takes into account each participating student’s probability of selection and matches the participant group to the total enrollment
by grade, gender, and race/ethnicity.
Response Rates: Response rate is the total number of students who participated in the survey divided by the number of students randomly chosen to
take the survey within a school or district. Generally, the higher the response rate, the more confidence that the survey results reflect the student
population. Student response rates of 80% or higher are very desirable and increase confidence that the results are representative of the entire student
population.
Confidentiality: In order to protect confidentiality, student responses are not released if they might allow someone to identify individual students. A
period (.) appears whenever results meet certain “suppression” criteria used to maintain confidentiality. Our suppression criteria include results of 0%
or 100%; results where the numerator has fewer than 3 students (e.g., the number of students who answered ‘yes’), or the number in the denominator
is 30 or fewer (e.g., the number of students who answered the question).
Considerations When Using the Report.
The results of your school or district can be compared to the state or regional estimates (to be released in the spring of 2018). When comparing a school
or district estimate to a regional or state estimate, examine the 95% confidence intervals. If they overlap, there is no scientific evidence to believe the
estimates are different. If they do not overlap, there is high confidence that the estimates are different (“statistically significant”). For statistically
significant differences, judgment is needed to decide whether the size of the difference is meaningful and important.
Technical Assistance. The Healthy Kids Colorado Survey team can help you: Understand your report. We are happy to meet or talk with you about any aspect of your report including understanding the nuts and bolts to
identifying the most important indicators
Conduct additional and customized analysis of your data. We are happy to talk with you about custom analysis. Please note that additional
analysis can sometimes be limited based on the sample size. As a general rule of thumb, if there are fewer than 100 respondents, there are a
iv
limited number of categories that can be used to look at results. Several hundred respondents are typically necessary for estimates with smaller
subgroups. Therefore, custom analysis may be possible with district-level data but not always with school-level data.
Prepare a presentation of the data. We can create a customized Power Point presentation according to your needs.
Present or co-present your data. We are available to travel to your location or be available by webinar/teleconference.
