ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
A warm welcome from the Gonzaga Business Network (GBN) Career Fair Planning Committee to
everyone participating in tonight’s Sixth Annual GBN Career Fair. We are grateful to the many
exhibitors here this evening – some for the sixth consecutive year – who are offering employment
opportunities to our alumni attendees. And a special thank-you to the many volunteers from our
participating schools who are ensuring our exhibitors and attendees have a first-class experience.
They’ve taken time out from busy holiday schedules to help with recruiting exhibitors and
attendees, getting our participants registered, conducting mock interviews and resume reviews,
and countless other duties. Thank you!!
Gonzaga welcomes our neighbor on North Capitol Street, Archbishop Carroll High School. We are
happy that the graduates from The Academy of Holy Cross, Georgetown Visitation Preparatory
School, Connelly School of the Holy Child, and Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart are joining us
again. And we are pleased to include graduates of Washington Jesuit Academy as attendees at
tonight’s program – together exemplifying the GBN motto of being “men and women for others.”
Through the collective efforts of committee members from these schools, hundreds of graduates
will have the opportunity to engage representatives from over eighty organizations from a broad
range of local and national industries. As a committee, our goal is to provide an opportunity for the
graduates to either begin or expand their career options. Ultimately, we encourage the alumni
from the respective schools to maximize the tremendous network that exists within our Catholic
school community.

What are some of the areas in which you would like to develop and what is your plan for development?

Getting the Most from the Career Fair
The 2017 GBN Career Fair is a great place to gather information about potential employers and make
contacts that can lead to a job or internship. This is your first opportunity to make a great impression
with employers and have the opportunity to practice your interview skills in a less formidable
environment than a formal interview. Use this experience to practice talking about what you have
done, what you know, and what your interests are. After tonight’s event, you should have a better
sense of your career direction and will have made contact with several organizations that hire people
with your skills and interests. When thinking about a potential employer’s needs and your
background, evaluate whether each company might be a match for you.
Have a Plan
Take a few moments to plan your path.
Mark those tables that are high priority, and those that look as though they’ll be high in traffic, and plan accordingly.
Have a resume that represents your knowledge, skills, and abilities effectively. If you are looking at several career options, you may want to have two or more targeted résumés.
Be prepared to share basic information about yourself and your career interests. For example:
“Hello, my name is Tim Johnson. I'm a senior at Georgetown University majoring in
English. I'm very interested in a marketing career. As you can see on my résumé, I
completed an internship in the Marketing Division of the ABC Company in New York
last summer. While there, I was able to gain some substantive experience and now
have greater clarity about my future career. I was recognized for my ability to work
with clients and colleagues and am very interested in talking with you about
marketing opportunities with your organization.”
Stay Open-Minded
Don’t discount industries or companies simply because they are outside of your area of
expertise.
If someone asks if you are interested in hearing about their company, listen! Even if it is not in
your field, or you do not think it would be the best fit for you.
Explain the type of job in which you are interested and leave your resume for consideration in
the event that a job opens up.
Take a pamphlet or a business card.

Connect and Be Confident
Approach an employer, make eye contact, smile, and offer your hand when you introduce
yourself.
If you can, establish rapport—perhaps you and the interviewer share a common interest or
experience.
Questions to Ask Employers
What are you looking for in the employees you hire?
What are the characteristics of your most successful employees?
Are there specific career tracks within the organization? What can the typical employee hired in
your division expect to be doing in 2, 5, or 10 years?
What is your organization’s culture like?
Are there opportunities for on-going training through your organization?
Would you mind sharing your career history? What made you choose this company and why
do you stay? How long have you been with the company?
What is the one thing that most surprised you about this company?
Take Notes and Organizational Literature
There is a short amount of time to gather and digest a lot of information.
Most recruiters will have information for you to pick up, including brochures, thumb drive, CD's,
position descriptions, and other data.
Ask for business cards from the recruiters you have met.
Write down the answers to the questions you asked, as well as any other information you learn.
Set up a spreadsheet – With whom did you speak? With whom do you need to follow up?
Write thank-you notes to the companies that impressed you the most.
In your note, make reference to the personal interaction. It will make you more memorable,
and demonstrates your knowledge of how to navigate business relations.
Request to connect on LinkedIn.
Share any interesting articles or information that relates to the industry.
Distinguishing yourself is very important, given the high volume of jobseekers.
Make revisions to your cover letter, resume and interview techniques. While at the event, you
may realize a couple of things you wish to change; take note of these changes before too much
time passes.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES USING SOCIAL MEDIA WISELY IN THE JOB SEARCH
Clearly, recruiting has changed with the advent of technology and social media. We begin to build our professional network the minute we create our first Facebook account. Intentionally, or unintentionally, we grow our network with Twitter followers, Facebook friends, and LinkedIn connections. In fact, social media has become one of the most important ways to network professionally and conduct a job search. Today, most companies have their own Facebook and LinkedIn pages and use them as vehicles for recruitment. Jobvite’s annual survey found that 92% of companies utilize social media to find and hire new talent, up from 2011’s 89%. The survey also revealed that LinkedIn is the preferred tool for recruiting, with 89% of the respondents citing it as the tool of choice when hiring. Facebook and Twitter were the next most cited tools, with 25% and 15%, respectively.
According to Alexis Grant, author of 10 Smart Ways to Use Social Media in Your Job Search, there are a few
tips and strategies that can help you use social media effectively:
1. Let people know that you are looking. Tweet or update your status when you have published your resume.
2. Don’t be afraid to network on Facebook. Friends are usually more willing to help. 3. Make sure your Facebook profile is private. You may not want employers to see your personal
updates. 4. Find information about hiring managers. Knowing them helps you customize your resume and
cover letter. 5. Hyperlink your resume. Add the URL for your LinkedIn and Twitter profiles to your contact
information on the resume. 6. Be strategic with Facebook lists. Make sure updates of a personal nature are visible only to friends,
while updates about professional topics can be shared with professional contacts. 7. Create the connections you need to get the job. Go beyond whom you already know and expand
your network. 8. Get Google on your side. Complete your LinkedIn profile, be active on the network, which will
push your profile to the top of Google search of your name. 9. Join industry chats on Twitter. Keep yourself updated about what’s new. 10. Seek out job search advice. “Like” career experts and career blogs for fresh tips even when you
are not searching for a job.
