Market Penetration: Hospital-Owned Practice EHR
Given the difference in market penetration between the hospital-owned
and free-standing outpatient organizations, this report will separate the
findings by hospital-owned or free-standing organizational structure.
Data from the HIMSS Analytics LOGIC™ health IT market intelligence
platform on June 30 reveals 92 percent of hospital-owned outpatient
facilities have a “live and operational” EMR.
This data from LOGIC coupled with the study data supports the
reasoning that study responses represent current market adoption
levels and dynamics.
Statistics from LOGIC and the 2017 Outpatient Study indicate strong
growth in the implementation of outpatient EHRs over the years.
This growth coupled with high adoption rates suggest the
hospital-owned outpatient market has neared universal adoption.2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017

2017 Essentials Brief: 9th Annual Outpatient PM & EHR Study www.himssanalytics.com
Market Penetration: Free-Standing Practice EHR
The study reveals nearly 70 percent of respondents representing a
free-standing outpatient facility report having an EHR.
Adoption of the EHR in the free-standing outpatient market showed
a slight decrease from 2016 based upon responses from study
participants.
With some physicians on the verge of retirement and choosing
not to invest in EHR technology, others who do not feel they
need it, and the purchase of physician practices by either larger
practices or hospitals/health systems, the opportunity for adoption
in the free-standing market is somewhat limited. This indicates near
universal adoption across this segment of the market.

Market Opportunity: EHR Purchase Intentions
All study respondents were asked about their future purchase intentions.
Many respondents indicated they are staying with their current vendor rather
than replacing their solution outright.
Respondents with no investment plans drop below 60 percent for the first
time in four years.
Those with plans to purchase a new solution (~6 percent) dropped from
roughly 9 percent in 2016 further indicating the near universal adoption of
EHR solutions across the outpatient space.
After little change in the replacement market over the last three years just
over 10 percent of respondents in 2017 indicated plans to completely replace
their current solution.
While this could indicate the beginning of a more robust replacement market
than has been seen in previous years, it is likely too early to tell at this point in
time if the upward trend will continue.

Market Opportunity: PM Purchase Intentions
As seen in the EHR questions, there is a slight uptick of respondents
who plan to replace their current PM solution.
Just under a quarter of study respondents indicated purchasing,
replacement or upgrade plans for their PM.
Respondents with no plans to purchase or upgrade has stayed
roughly consistent over the past two years.
The intention to purchase a new solution or replace their current
solution was similar for hospital-owned and free-standing
organizations.

MU criteria for the second straight year.
Just over 37 percent of respondents cited complete confidence in their solution, up
slightly from 2016 and over 20 percent in 2015.
Confidence in the two upper rating tranches (9 &10) showed increased ratings while
the middle and lower rating tranches were mixed.
