Dear Fellow Knights,

September proved to be a busy but very successful month for the Council. We had a great kickoff to the Car Raffle, and other events during the month proved just as successful. The All Knighter had the largest turnout I’ve seen, since I became a Knight at St. Thomas. Almost 50 people turned out for a great evening of fraternity, food and drink, and an outstanding guest speaker. The day after that I had the pleasure of watching two more Knights take their oath of the Patriotic degree. The weekend continued with a PWID Drive in the Courtyard and a Meet and Greet in the Parish Hall. Knights seemed to appear from everywhere, as we had at 4-5 volunteers in the courtyard after each mass. The Knights table in the Parish Hall was manned all morning and the results were amazing. The PWID Drive collected over $750. At the table, we not only sold a significant number of Oktoberfest and Car Raffle tickets, but more importantly left with 3 signed Forms 100 from candidates who want to join our Council.

The past month was quite busy and many of our members still haven’t returned from summer travels, but everyone else really stepped up and made things happen. You are indeed living up to the oath you took with regard to Charity, Unity and Fraternity. Being the Grand Knight of an organization filled with men of your character and caliber makes me quite proud. We still have some busy weeks ahead and I know that you will continue to be there and help us achieve the goals that we have established for the year. I look forward to meeting these challenges with you and making this council the best in the state. As far as I’m concerned, we’re already there!

Vivat Jesus,

Bill Neer

~ Upcoming Events ~

Pancake Breakfast ~ Our next monthly pancake breakfasts is this Sunday October 1st (the next one will be November 5th). We welcome any Knights who wish to volunteer to help serve after the 07:30 and 9:00 AM masses on Pancake Breakfast Sundays. Please contact Lloyd LaComb [email protected] to volunteer. Breakfast is only served after the 7:30 & 9 AM Masses.

Jim Click Car Raffle ~ Our key fundraiser for this Fall is the Jim Click Car Raffle (Millions for Tucson). Our Financial Secretary, Larry Lewis, has coordinated with the Jim Click Raffle folks to have this year’s car, a Ford Platinum Explorer, here again on October 1st. All raffle tickets purchased go completely to the Knights of Columbus designated charities, because Jim Click is donating this car to the winner. Since our “selling” dates are in conjunction with our Fall pancake breakfast schedule, we will need as many Brother Knights as possible to volunteer their time to help sell raffle tickets after the Sunday Masses. Please contact Larry Lewis [email protected] or Steve Sanchez [email protected] to volunteer your help.

PWID Drive ~ Our PWID (People with Intellectual Disabilities) Drive continues this month at the Safeway grocery (Swan/Sunrise) on October 13/14 and again October 27/28. Please contact Brother Knight Dan Chambers (520- 909-6821) [email protected] and take a two-hour shift passing out Tootsie Rolls. Our primary benefactor is still the Special Olympics of Southern Arizona, sponsored by the Sunnyside Vikings Booster Club.

John Paul II’s Legacy – Theology of the Body By: Deacon Ed Sheffer

The Feast Day for St. John Paul II is on October 22. Much has been written about his life and papacy. Although it is impossible to do justice to the first major teaching he undertook as pope, I hope this short article inspires some to seek to become much more familiar with Theology of the Body. I believe it will be one of St. John Paul II’s greatest legacies.

In its original release, Theology of the Body included one hundred and twenty nine talks, delivered between September 1979 and November 1984. Why did he write it? For one big reason, his entire papacy was devoted to bringing hope to a world in desperate need of hope. In Theology of the Body, he shares incredible insight to anyone who wishes to live a much fuller life.

His life experiences revealed to him that the culture has very little use for the idea that the visible body reveals the invisible person. But he says what we do with our bodies profoundly affects our souls, and to ignore that greatly distances us from being more fully human. Today even more than when he released Theology of the Body the prevailing belief is that if God exists, God doesn’t really care what we do with our bodies. God is principally concerned that we respect each other as persons. St. John Paul II says that falls woefully short in exploring the very gift of God – love.

Theology of the Body completely affirms the goodness of sexuality. It clearly discloses that sex is not a dirty little word or limited to a bodily need and or function. God and sex can and should be spoken in the same sentence. God is the author of love and love is what drives a person to give, whether in marriage or in celibacy.

St. John Paul II believed that the nature of things is indispensable to understanding love and marriage. The problem with understanding how our world perceives marriage has a significant amount to do with an erroneous grasp of human nature. When one’s vision of humanity likens us to a mechanical machine that just happened to evolve, then yes the body has no meaning, and what we do with it has no inner meaning and so marriage can’t possibly be comprehended in its truest form. St. John Paul II says the human body in its deepest nature was formed by God, it has spousal meaning, and the meaning for marriage flows from the nature of man and woman, male and female, created in the image of God.

John Paul II’s Legacy - Theology of the Body Continued

He illuminates something that clearly needs to be understood if one is to understand love at a deeper level, each and every one of us is called to be a gift, a gift to one another and a gift to God, and that this giving and receiving requires real presence. This life altering reality is becoming even more challenging in a world becoming more and more gender neutral, not to mention virtual.

When one begins to comprehend and sense the truths of Theology of Body, the Sacrament of Marriage comes much more into focus and its ordained purpose can be seen as a divine order of creation. For the invisible realities are made visible through the physical world. Why is this important? Because everything in the created order points to God. Once a person understands and accepts this, it changes the complexion of things. For everything we see and touch and do has something to do with the sacred. We need to touch it all aware of our connectedness to God, for it comes from God and reveals God in some way.

The beauty of Theology of the Body is it goes a long way in helping us discover the biggest why’s of life. Mysticism is the why behind everything – why we’re human, why we’re made, why we are female and male, and unless we know the real why, we don’t know how to be fully human. Theology of the Body explores all these whys. Theology of the Body is a unique vehicle to call us back on the path to fuller humanness.

Stay tuned, sometime this next year, St. Thomas the Apostle will be offering multi-week presentations on Theology of the Body.

Protecting Widows – A Founding Goal

As a member of this council, you know how important spouses can be to the charitable works of the Order. If you’re married, your wife is probably involved in a few of the many events that happen each fraternal year. This support adds great value and impact to what a council can achieve.

When the Order was founded in 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney and the other brave men were setting out to protect Catholic families, but especially wives and children. Today, we remain committed to this mission by offering insurance products and fraternal benefits designed with that goal in mind. One specific policy rider that you may not know about is called Spousal Waiver of Premium. This rider is unique to the Knights of Columbus philosophy of helping our widows.

This rider is available on most permanent and Discoverer plans purchased at standard rates by a member and his wife on the same day. When both spouses apply, the rider provides for waiver of premiums on the spouse’s contract in the event of the insured’s death. Best of all, for members and spouses ages 18 to 60, this waiver can be added for no charge. The rider stays in effect until the spouse attains age 65 or certain other triggering events occur.

Our products are designed with your needs and budget in mind. With a solid portfolio of life insurance, long-term care, disability income and retirement products, the Knights of Columbus can help you meet all of your financial goals. To learn more about these solutions, contact me today.

That all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good.” Prayer intention of Pope Francis for October.

The intention considers workers and unemployed people. In Saturday morning Roundtable discussions, we’ve looked at Pope Leo XIII's great encyclical, Rerum Novarum. It broke new ground by discussing workers' rights and social justice, thus launching the great tradition of Catholic Social Teaching.

This month, Pope Francis reminds us that through work we find an important aspect of our human dignity. Work gives us a real stake in contributing to the common good, including the good of our families. Denying opportunities to the unemployed, denies them that dignity.

As we pray to God for this month’s intention, let us pray especially for Knights who for are looking for work, for our family members and friends in a similar situation, and for all those whose rights – and needs – are not being met through their work.

May God bless your volunteer work, and bring you profound joy through the many kinds of contribution you make.
