...to the Thousand Islands Arts Center’s 2017 season and a year that will celebrate our 50th anniversary! We are happy to offer a full complement of classes again this year with exceptional instructors, some familiar to you, many new. In addition to adult classes, we have two more weeks of kids’ summer camps bringing our children’s summer programming to a total of seven weeks. Highlights of the 50th anniversary schedule include an exhibition entitled, It Started at the River, Prints and Paintings by Nancy Hammond, and a Gala on July 6th which will feature the live auction of an original cut-paper work created by Nancy especially for the milestone anniversary. The 50th Anniversary Retrospective exhibition will feature a comprehensive look back at the history of the Thousand Islands Arts Center and the world-renowned collection of 20th century North American textiles of our Handweaving Museum. Be sure to check out the calendar on page 41. Aside from our abundant class schedule, we have several other exciting events and exhibitions throughout the year including the 23rd Annual Weaving History Conference in May; and the 53rd Annual Antiques Show and Sale and the 35th Annual Arts and Crafts Show and Sale, both perennial favorites held in August. The Along the River’s Edge exhibition will be in August (new month) and feature text paintings by Kirsten Bowen, and ceramics by Tom Folino, as well as the juried artwork of many other exceptional regional artists. The very popular Dine-Around fundraiser is back this season and has been renamed the Linda B. Yenawine Memorial Dine-Around in memory of Linda, a longtime TIAC volunteer, supporter, trustee, friend and founder of the first Dine-Around in 2014, who very sadly passed away last year.

ART COACHING WORkSHOP: UNLOCk YOUR CREATIVITY!Judith GouldPlease register early. Space is limited in order to give the best one-on-one attention to each student. If you have been making art for a while you have probably felt unsure about the quality of your work, your artistic strengths and weaknesses or how to move forward into a different medium or style. Unlike art courses that focus on teaching technique, the goal of this class is to coach individuals to identi-fy their strengths, help them make de-cisions about new directions for their art and give them time to experiment and practice. Students are asked to bring finished artwork as well as works in progress to the class. Work in any medium is en-couraged. During the class they will get individual coaching from the instructor and will work on their art. On the last session, students will complete a self-assessment and share their progress. The course will be offered over 3 one-day sessions giving students time to work between sessions and then get feedback on their progress.

LINE AND WASH WITH WATERCOLOR Paul Allen TaylorLine and wash was once a popular method of painting in watercolor. It made the process of painting a bit eas-ier and less intimidating because we aren’t as preoccupied with the shapes that interlock. In this class we’ll start out by using a matchstick dipped in liq-uid waterproof ink to create our image on textured watercolor paper. Once our image is in place, we’ll introduce the watercolor to finish it up and color-ize it. Paul will demonstrate in detail at the opening of class and students will then get a chance to try their hand at this interesting process. All materials will be provided. Students with more experience will weave a project that we’ll design together (via email) before the workshop. Students will need to prepare a warp with two contrasting colors, 50 ends of each color (wound together on warp-ing board), 3/2 cotton, 3 yards long. John Shaw-RimmingtonWorkshop location—front yard of the Arts Center at 314 John Street, Clayton. Have you ever admired those beautiful stone walls you see in the British countryside gardens, the grand stone arches that add so much to an entryway, or a majes-tic stone bench that seems to have been there forever? Historically, dry stone walls and structures are found in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Great Britain. They are also known as dykes, drystane, stone fence and stone hedge rows—all built without mortar as an adhesive. This traditional lost art is becoming very popular again for its beauty, but also because they create wild-life shelters, prevent erosion, and create a mini ecosystem for root protection in gardens.

This workshop will show you how to design and build this kind of eco-friendly structure so you can enhance your own property. The fo-cus of this class will be on design-ing and building a bench or seating area that is natural and functional. In a very hands-on way, students will learn about traditional dry laid construction, the use of proper ma-sonry tools, and the basics of struc-tural masonry without mortar. Students please wear steel-toed shoes/boots, work gloves, and safety glasses. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. On Friday evening there will be a slide show presentation about dry laid structures from 6–7 pm at the TILT meeting room (135 John Street, right behind RAKS). Free and open to the public.

Walking to the Thou-sand Islands Arts Center where coffee, tea and breakfast treats are waiting, Kathleen will discuss potential ideas for the property. These ideas will take into consideration the architecture of the two buildings on the property, the existing plantings, the soil and grow-ing conditions and how best to synthe-size these elements with new gardens.

Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 5th, 2017, start-ing at 7:30am at the Arts Center you will learn about and work with various methods of removing existing shrubs, plants, grass, etc. in preparation for the new plantings. Before students start on their own projects they’ll get a thorough introduction to clay—the different kinds of clay and their uses, various glazes to use for different projects, cones and what they do, kiln firings, drying times, etc.—every-thing you need to know before you embark on your project.
