About The Yale Center for International and Professional Experience (CIPE)The Center comprises a group of offices which work together in close proximity on the third and fourth floors of 55 Whitney Avenue, including Yale Summer Session and Special Programs, Office of Career Strategy, Fellowship Programs, and Study Abroad. In partnership with other academic advisers on campus, the Center supports students throughout their four years at Yale as they make decisions about their academic plans and explore career options. Through workshops, information sessions, and individual advising, we help students to clarify their goals, to identify opportunities in the U.S. and abroad that are right for them, and to build upon their experiences in a meaningful and purposeful way.

About the PhotographsThe Yale Center for International and Professional Experience offers students the opportunity to study on campus or in an international location during the summer as well as the option to participate in academic programs during a year or term abroad. Students interested in gaining professional experience as undergraduates have the option to pursue a number of alumni sponsored internships throughout the United States as well as internationally. These photographs, taken by our students, represent a few snapshots of the many programs available to Yale undergraduates while the reflection statements offer insight into our students’ experiences.

Ariege Besson ‘18, CalhounThomas C. Barry Travel Fellowship/Yale College Public Service Research FellowshipBanjarmasin, Indonesia – Summer 2016Floating markets are a longstanding tradition in Southeast Asian river deltas. Here, outside of Banjarmasin on the island of Borneo (Kalimantan), a crowd of women sell oranges, bananas and other foods from boats in the early morning mist. Although this trade is mostly dominated by women, men sometimes join, as in this picture. Most people in the area live on houses built on stilts over the rivers and only recently have roads surpassed waterways in terms of importance for transport. This picture was taken while interning for Yayasan Kota Kita, an organization dedicated to improving citizen’s agency and engagement in city planning. Our role in Banjarmasin was to find alternatives for the poor to government public housing, which is hugely unpopular as it forces people to leave the river, which here not just a home but a way of life. This trip in particular allowed me to see another of the myriad ways the river figures in the lives of these citizens.

Jake Leffew ‘19, Ezra StilesJackson Institute for Global Affairs FellowshipSrinagar, Kashmir, India – Summer 2016If going to church on Christmas or Easter is the bare-minimum activity for a Christian, I never even did that. Growing up in an irreligious family, I had not thought much about the importance of religion before travelling to India. In New Delhi, I toured extravagant Hindu temples. In Ladakh, I attended meditations at sprawling Buddhist monasteries. In Amritsar, I went to the Golden Temple, the massive Sikh pilgrimage complex made of solid gold. In India, I saw the extent to which religion deeply influenced people’s lives. However, I also noticed how people had aggrandized the things they felt passionately about and how this phenomenon sparked conflict. While all of these experiences made me think more critically about piety, seeing the woman in the blue and pink hijab cry quietly while praying impacted me most profoundly. It was the sixth day of Ramadan. I was in Srinagar, Kashmir. Her headscarf flowed seamlessly into the dress that covered her to her ankles, a cascade of graceful colors. A leathery face and cracked hands were all that she exposed to the world. In that moment, she exposed much more of herself to me through her faith. Since women are not allowed inside the mosque, she stopped in the doorway. She lifted her hands to her ears and faced the interior of the mosque. Allahu Akbar. She folded her hands to her navel, bowed, and crouched to her knees. As she lowered her head to the cold concrete, she began to cry. Moisture filled the crevices in her skin as she continued through the iterations with utmost precision until the sequence was over. When she turned to leave, she wiped her face, the papier-mâché doorway framing the profile view of her body. Three men were sitting on the edge of the porch chatting quietly. She paid them no mind. She had come here to pray, to become better connected with God; this was the mission of her life. The fact that she is not allowed the decency to pray alongside her male counterparts did not stop her. Her faith brought her to tears.I had scoffed at people who are religious, had believed them to be prone to the root of the world’s pain. The woman in blue and pink conveyed to me the depth of her faith through her tears that stained the concrete steps; she made me question the preconceptions I had had about people of faith. The woman in blue and pink knew she would never see the inside of the mosque, but it did not stop her. The woman in blue and pink left the mosque without saying a word; she showed me that faith in God, in yourself, in what you love, is best expressed through silence.

Lauren Tucker ‘18, Ezra StilesIES Abroad Summer in Madrid/Yale College Class of 2004 Travel FellowshipBarcelona, Spain – Summer 2016I always try to remind myself to look up every once in a while. Most of the time walking around New Haven I am on my phone, trying not to walk into people (and trip over my own two feet), or just preoccupied about the next thing on my to-do list. Looking up reminds me to be present in all experiences. But in a place like La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, it’s hard not to look up the entire time.I’ve never been in a building quite like this. The ceiling was so elaborate, so tall, so dizzying. A forest of light and stone unlike any forest you’ve ever seen rises up all around you. My neck was aching by the time I left because I could not get enough of this skyward view. This was one of the only photos I took inside the building because I was, for once, too busy looking up and appreciating the sights with my own eyes. But more than anything, this photo reminds me of the church’s beauty in being incomplete. It’s the beauty of a building that has been under construction for decades. It’s the beauty of a study abroad trip at its halfway point. It’s the beauty of 20-year-old college students who still do not know where life is taking them. The church should be completed in ten years. My fellow study abroad friends and I have a pact that for the church’s completion – and our trip’s ten year reunion – we will return to La Sagrada Familia. And maybe, when I look up at the ceiling once more, I’ll be able to find the beauty in being complete, too.

Julia Kahn ‘19, MorseIFSA Butler Advanced Language and Culture in Buenos AiresRapa Nui, Chile – Summer 2016I’d never been further west than I was when I took this photo. On the slopes of Rapa Nui, better known as Easter Island, 2,290 miles from the western coast of Chile and 4,961 miles from my home. One of the most remote inhabited islands in the world, Rapa Nui sits alone in the Pacific Ocean, it’s just 63 square miles of land surrounded on all sides by endless salt water. In this photo, I had just scaled Rano Raraku, one of the three volcanos on the island, where a site with the same name is situated, better known as the “Quarry.” Here, I paused in awe to snap a photo of the eastern slope, where the moai–the famed monolithic structures carved by Rapa Nui people–slowly, gracefully were sinking into the dormant volcano. The side of Rano Raraku had been the stone quarry for these monoliths, where sculptors carved out the moai and transported them to sites around the island. The sculptors had seemingly designed dozens of moai in different styles: some had long noses while others had small ears, wide chins, and even one moai was kneeling. However, the craftsmanship had stalled permanently long ago. Some statues were left lopsidedly propped and others had toppled over face-forward. Some were left on their backs, staring forever at the endless oceanic sky as they sunk into the soft mountainside. Others were half-finished, no more than a reclined head and torso emerging from a slab of rock still connected to the volcano. There were even a couple maoi splayed at the base of the volcano with their heads separated from their shoulders. As I have seen and researched the incommunicable numbers of Latin American indigenous sites and customs utterly devastated by the interference of European peoples, the gradual return of these moai to their native soil gave me relief, knowing that their worn faces will continue to stare seaward for their foreseeable, languorous future that runs on island time. Even in their abandonment they are long from forgotten, revered even still, as the Rapa Nui people have long been generating a renaissance of their indigenous culture that was nearly erased long ago by colonists and explorers. Rano Raraku is unique because with or without the arrival of Europeans, these moai would have been left on the volcano’s side in favor of more newly-sculpted styles and statues. They would have been left to slowly disappear into the rock and dirt from which they were carved, a testament to the quiet persistence of time and the endurance of memory slowly, lovingly regained and reinvigorated.

Matt Klineman ’19, BerkeleyYale Summer Session – Intermediate Spanish II: Lima, PeruChinchero, Peru – Summer 2016Perhaps the very first week of my summer experience—while we were still in New Haven—we had a chance to explore a special temporary exhibit at the Yale University Art Gallery called “Weaving and the Social World: 3,000 Years of Ancient Andean Textiles,” which was an amazing, amazing display of the very art and culture we were about to explore in person in just a few weeks. The tunics, blankets, and wall coverings, full of life and meaning, were a window into a beautiful history. But as enlightening as the exhibition was, and as wonderful as it was that Yale has the resources to bring this experience to us, it is still a museum—the textiles were still hung behind glass windows. 3,000 years is a long time.Flash forward to the last week of our program in Peru and we are traveling near Cusco, through El Valle Sagrado de Los Incas, where we have an opportunity to stop in and see some mujeres tejedoras of Chinchero hard at work, weaving and teaching visitors. Centuries later. Still weaving some the same fabrics we saw in the museum. Still washing their wool with the natural soap from Sacha Paraqay, still hand spinning their thread, still crushing Cochineal bugs to get the color red. But I think the thing that makes this picture so special for me is the little girl in the center left of the frame. Because this isn’t just history we are immersing ourselves in; it’s life. Everything is always changing, in constant flux, something you can clearly feel in the Spanish and native influences—the mezcla—of Peru’s cultural history. Even today, you can feel that Peru is on the cusp of real changes. A new, forward-looking president was just inaugurated while we were there, and our interactions with fellow students at La Universidad del Pacifico were nothing but optimistic. But this little girl is proof that no matter what changes, culture is always there. Que chévere.

Clara Mokri ‘18, Timothy DwightCIPE Summer Journalism Fellowships: Yale College Summer Journalism Lima, Peru – Summer 2016This photograph was shot in the city center in Lima, Peru. There are a couple aspects of this scene that really drew my attention; the first was the abundance of colorful buildings scattered around the city. Color immediately breathes vibrance and life into an environment, which always catches my eye. I was also pleasantly surprised when the cops asked me to take their picture. Whenever you have a camera in any public space, it is important to respect people and not point a camera in their face. While I do tend to prefer off-guard and candid moments, the fact that these four men initiated this shot and welcomed me into their world made for a much more honest and genuine image, despite the fact that it was posed.

Eddie Joe Antonio ‘19, Jonathan EdwardsThomas C. Barry FellowshipVilla de Leyva, Colombia – Summer 2016I took this picture in Boyacá, Colombia, in the town of Villa de Leyva. Set against the dry mountains, the old colonial church of the small town was particularly striking in the stone central square. Throughout my travels through Colombia, I kept encountering gorgeous, colonial-era towns that had been preserved--with degrees of success--like the spectacular Villa de Leyva. I took hundreds of pictures and emailed them to friends and family, in love with the spectacle of history in the present. Yet only later did I stop to think more about what the history really means, the conquest the buildings had seen, the turmoil of independence and revolution, the struggles of war, and the everyday squabbles and beauty in between. I hope this shot, a town center founded in 1572 and Colombia’s largest public square, will gesture to at least some of the richness, complexity, and ongoing humanness of that.

Sara Meyers ‘18, DavenportNiebla Foundation Summer Fellowship/Yale College Class of 2004 Travel Fellowship/Richter Summer FellowshipSan Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua – Summer 2016This photo on the beach of San Juan del Sur reminds me of the beauty and constancy that describes life in Nicaragua. Every evening this past summer, I was able to experience a beautiful sunset, whether walking past families sitting outside their homes in León or from the top of Volcán Mombacho. It gave me a moment to reflect on everything that had happened that day.My summer in Nicaragua was spent surveying and interviewing women in clinics regarding their knowledge and beliefs of HPV and cervical cancer. Many days, I needed the calm of the sun setting with the promise of it rising the next day to give closure to all the experiences I had recorded for our research. It was challenging with my slowly-improving Spanish but incredibly rewarding to learn about the lives of these women. Now back in the United States, I still think about my time in Nicaragua. It taught me to be more reflective and appreciative of the small moments of beauty every day that make our troubles seem insignificant in comparison.

Emily Barnes ‘17, BerkeleyYale-Coordinated Domestic Internship: CLIMB the RockiesMount Sneffels, Ouray, Colorado – Summer 2016This picture was taken on the afternoon of my 21st birthday as I summited Mount Sneffels (14,157) with a coworker at the end of a field research day. My stint at the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, a non-profit whose mission is to protect the delicate ecosystems of Colorado’s tallest mountains, was easily one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. As Communications and Field Research Intern, I spent the summer setting up infra-red trail use tracking equipment and analyzing results to determine hiking traffic and facilitate greater awareness of and better care for popular hiking trails in fragile areas. This internship allowed me to utilize my analytical strengths as an environmental engineer and physical training as a member of Yale’s Cross Country team to contribute to a cause I am deeply passionate in supporting. Colorado’s beautiful wild places were the birthplace of my love for the outdoors, and this experience allowed me to explore more pathways through which I can use my strengths in math and statistics to pursue my passion for protecting the environment.

Sam South ‘18, CalhounRichard U. Light FellowshipDengfeng, China – Summer 2016The monks of the Shaolin temple of central China are world-renowned for their dedication, hard work, and sacrifice. During my ten days studying kung fu at the temple I learned the strength of a spirit stronger than the body, and putting a bigger purpose above oneself. The children studying martial arts here come from a variety of backgrounds, but all share a common goal: that through determined exertion they can craft a bright future for themselves. I was able to interview many of these children, and those who had come from poor backgrounds particularly earned my respect, often coming from nothing except maybe a couple of sheep and a plot of land, sometimes with parents having gone to the city in search of a higher paying job but unable to bring their children behind. On a varsity sports team at Yale, I was excited to give this form of exercise a try, but even just the first day led to blood blisters, sore muscles, and supreme agony just trying to climb the stairs back to our rooms and a true admiration for these kids, able to continue in spite of the difficulty of the sport. It was hard to get up before five again the second day, but we did, inspired by the dedication of the practitioners and the children. By the time we left the temple we were truly heartbroken to leave behind so many good friends, but more than that, a new outlook on life’s challenges.Physical challenges push us to the limits and call for absolute mental concentration. They teach us that no matter the difficulty of a task, if we are willing to give our entire selves and sacrifice comfort for a greater goal, we can accomplish far more than we would have believed when sweat is pouring and muscles are aching. My experience with Chinese has opened my eyes and enriched my life in countless ways, but of course comes with a unique set of challenges. After my time at Shaolin, however, I can overcome my frustration when my teacher again asks me what verb I should use when we talk about imposing international sanctions or deploying missile systems and my mind draws a blank. Because of my time at Shaolin I am able to return home not broken but determined, and do whatever it takes to aim high and never settle for mediocrity. This photo captures the determination from a young age that these students have. It almost seems that just being at the temple grants the wisdom of the thousands of years of tradition and dedication that have led to the rightful fame of the Shaolin monks. I will never be called on to defend central China against invaders with only my fists and my fortitude, but I hope that the lessons I learned at Shaolin will stay with me and give me strength to face every one of life’s challenges as these students and monks face so determinedly each of theirs.

Benjamin Lawrence ’17, Ezra StilesArcadia Study Abroad at University of EdinburghVeytaux, Switzerland – Spring 2016Pictured here is Château de Chillon, a Medieval castle located on Lake Geneva, Switzerland. It is the most- visited historic monument in Switzerland and boasts a rich, 1,000-year history dating back to the Counts of Savoy. Often described as a “fairytale castle,” Château de Chillon sits on its own island and faces the beautiful Swiss Alps across the lake. The castle is a 45 minute walk from the city of Montreux, where my friend and I arrived. Like many travelers, we were in somewhat of a hurry to get from one place to another, and Montreux was just a pit stop on the way. Racing along the shores of Lake Geneva, we did not truly appreciate the extraordinary sights around us--the looming mountains, budding flowers, rippling waves. When we finally reached the path’s end, we were quite tired even though it was only mid-morning. While catching my breath I glanced up at the castle and immediately gasped. It was even more stunning in person. From the pointed towers to the wooden bridge to the reflection in the water, I had stumbled into a fairytale indeed. After taking what must have been five hundred pictures, my friend and I grabbed a seat on a nearby bench and simply admired the view. What we hadn’t yet realized was how quiet the place was. No trains, no buses, no planes. We had gotten so used to those noises that it was nice to forget about the rush of traveling and enjoy a peaceful moment. I think we can all use a few more peaceful moments in our lives.

Maggie Moor ‘18, CalhounYale College Class of 2004 Travel FellowshipLeon, Nicaragua – Summer 2016Leon, Nicaragua is a city that never seems to stop moving. From the honking cars kicking up dust as they scream through the narrow streets, to the crowded buses squeezing on their last patron as the driver hits the gas, the city is infused with life. And in every way, that life is filled with color. The houses in just one block can range from the darkest of greens to the babiest of blues to the brightest of yellows. The street vendors packed together in hundreds of market stalls try to grab your attention with brilliant signs and mouthwatering fresh juices. Even the graveyards feel like sites of celebration, with each tombstone trying to outshine its neighbor with larger flowers and more intricate designs. At the heart of this bustling city lies the Cathedral of Leon, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the gathering place of hundreds each Sunday morning for mass. On the ground floor, the Cathedral mimics the city around it, with multiple images of Christ in full colorful garb, blessing those around him. Yet to climb the stairs to the roof of this worship hall is to escape the earthly world below and enter the skies of heaven. Walking out, you are blinded by the sun’s reflection on the purely white, polished stone. You are immersed in a white wonderland. Looking out, you can see the colorful city pulsing below. But the bustle and movement is now detached from you. Life seems to come to a halt. On the roof, where this photo was taken, you gain a whole new perspective of the land and sky surrounding you. You see the eight volcanoes surrounding Leon in the distance, their power seeming to guard the city from invasion. You see the fortress on the outskirts of the township, where the former dictator Somoza imprisoned, tortured and murdered thousands of rebel soldiers. You see the clouds moving over the horizon, ushering in the afternoon rainstorm. This method of seeing the world: first immersing oneself within and then pulling oneself out and beyond to reexamine your initial conclusions, is the most important thing I learned this summer in Nicaragua.
