Here we see some families making a difference. We can see reusable

containers, compartment lunch boxes, and lunch wrap made of waxy

fabric.

As well as reducing plastic rubbish for our landfills, it is actually

cheaper to buy larger bags of popcorn or pretzels and fill reusable

containers. So it’s a win-win!

Lunch wrap orders if you would like to purchase, are due to the foyer

by Wednesday, 21st June. (Remember a portion from each sale come

back to school).

Staff know how hard it is to change what we do. We get inspiration

form the families who have been doing this already. Thank-you for

your ideas.

What I am most excited about this fortnight is students pushing their boundaries of

comfort zone. I love seeing the expression and sense of achievement when students

dig deep and achieve something. Things are tough and hard but if you persevere

you can get there! (One of my favourite Greendale values).

Last week, all students ran in the cross country. Some children enjoy it while

others despise it. Everyone showed up and completed it! The staff were very

proud of you all.

We have 9 students off to the Gymnastics Festival on Monday at the Olympia

Stadium in Wigram. Many of them have not done much gymnastics before

but they’re all giving it their best shot!

Two weeks ago was “Bullying Free NZ Week”. The students have revised what

bullying is. We have been given some valuable suggestions about how we can make

our glorious school even better and safer ...

In the foyer will be a “post box” where students can put messages if they

feel like they’re “being hassled/around a aggressor/ being bullied” and not

sure who to talk to.

Year 5 and 6 students will be trained in conflict resolution (as an extra

support in the playground for soling conflicts).

We are due to review our Behaviour Management Policy soon and we welcome

more ideas from our students and families. Please keep an eye out for a google

survey via email soon.

I have attached a very helpful article. On the back of the page is a great chart

showing the difference between hassling/aggression and bullying.

Have a happy weekend.

Regards

Carey-Anne

Dad and Grandads Reading Before Assemblies

We continue inviting Dads and Grandads and

friends along before Assemblies to take small

groups for reading and game time. 1.15-1.45pm.

Next Assembly Friday 30th June

Assembly begins at 1.45pm. Home time at

2.30pm.

The Dyspraxia Support Group holds fun groups for children aged between 5 to 13 years of age on Saturday

afternoons during term time. The groups participate in a programme put together and delivered by a team of

enthusiastic supervisors. If you have a child or know a child with Developmental Dyspraxia/DCD who

would be interested in attending, please contact Sue on 358 3249 or email [email protected].

The Charing Cross Red Cross has organised a First Aid Course on Thursday 15th

June. It will run for 4 hrs between 10 am & 2 .30pm

with a break for a shared lunch. It will be held in the

Catholic Church Hall in Darfield. The cost of the

course is $15 plus a small charge of $3 for the use of

the hall.

If you are interested please contact Loraine Adams

by Sunday. Phone 3188532 or e-mail

This group of passionate students

and parents are leading the charge

on the “Wrap Free Wednesdays”.

We already have about 6 students

who are completely wrap free for

every day at school.

Go those families!!

Please email Carey-

Anne if you’re keen to

go along and want to

meet up in Darfield

for tea first before

heading along.

We still have plenty of dry sheep manure for sale at $10 bag. Available

from the school.

friendly) is for sale. $22 for

a pack of 3 which can be

used to hold sammies/

wraps, cake/biscuits etc. Order by 21st June

Duty Teachers at Break Times

To make our duty teachers more visible in the playground, we will now wear

high vis vests. These duty teachers are monitoring behaviour and tending

to accidents. There have been comments by younger children that they

haven’t seen us so now we will be highly visible!

Parent Night with Alison Schroeder

What an informative night that was! Such wise ideas

about making friends, communicating,

understanding sensory arousal etc etc. I will get the

PowerPoint presentation out as soon as it comes

through from Alison, so you can look back.

School phone 021 022 03710 Please can all parents text this phone for all messages

such as bus changes, absences etc.

If you contact Carey-Anne's personal phone and she is

away, then the school won’t be informed at the right

time.

Room 2 has been very busy this week crafting our speeches for the upcoming speech competition. We have been learning to make a statement and then back it up with evidence or an explanation. Most speeches are nearing completion and then the practicing will begin! We also spent an afternoon at the Greendale Hall flipping and tumbling on the huge inflatable mats. A big thank you to the PTA for funding this. As you read this our Cross Country Team will already have competed at the Malvern Cross Country at Sheffield. Our gymnastics team is off to Olympia on Monday and we wish them the best of luck. With the mornings becoming rather cold, please ensure your child has adequate clothing. While the classrooms are nice and warm we are still heading outside for fitness and most breaks during the day. Layers are best that can be removed as they warm up. Have a lovely weekend Carey-Anne and Hayley

Flips and tumbles

Jayde our activator organised this

fantastic gymnastic opportunity for

us. Thanks to the PTA’s donation,

all students took part for free

(instead of a $5 fee).

POEM AND SPEECH COMPETITION

Wonderful water

At Greendale School, we encourage

children and staff to drink water through the

day for feeding the brain and hydration.

Water is the only drink children should have

in their drink bottles please.

HEAD LICE

We have had several cases of Head lice reported to the

school, please check your children’s hair and treat if

necessary. Below is some information about checking your child for head lice. Do not treat your child for head lice or the environment unless you see nits (eggs) or head lice. What to look for:

Adult lice are small (about the size of a sesame seed).

Eggs (nits) are usually found firmly attached to the base of the hair shaft.

Lice stay near the scalp, often behind the ears, near the neckline, and back of the head.

Head lice hold tightly to the hair. They move by crawling. They cannot hop or fly (they do not have wings), but do move quickly making it difficult to find in a child’s hair.

Signs of a head lice infestation include: itchy scalp, tickling sensation in a per-son’s hair. Head lice are most active in the dark.

If your child is found to have head lice, it is important to treat your child before he/she returns to school. Please begin treatment as soon as possible. Exclude your child from attendance at school or until one day after their first treatment with a medicat-ed head lice product (either over-the-counter or prescription). Your prompt action is requested so that your child can get back to school as soon as possible and not miss learning opportunities in the classroom.

An ancient Egyptian proverb ... People bring about their own undoing through their tongues.

As a follow-up to Bully-free NZ Week, we have been exploring further through

discussion and watching video clips and small role plays what Bullying is. The

younger children’s understanding seems to be mostly centred around the physical

aspects of bullying, whereas the older children in Rooms 1 and 3 are beginning to

realise that words can be as hurtful as a push or a shove. We have revisited our

classroom rules and have reinforced our school value of R - Relationships, and how

body language and words are just as important as actions!

Flips and Tumbles … what a blast the children had! Jarod and Britney came and set

up in the Greendale Hall with three air tracks and a variety of gymnastic activities

for the children to undertake! There were lots of giggles and laughter, wriggles and

rolly-pollies, and huffing and puffing from the fun!

Our social action for this week is:

IGNORE SOMEONE WHO IS ANNOYING

We have our poetry and speech competition coming up on Friday. Room 3 have chosen their nursery rhymes they want to say. Most of them have chosen Baa Baa Black Sheep or Higgeldy, Piggedly, My Black Hen with a couple doing their own thing. If they want to do something harder there is Incy, wincy spider and Tiny Tim which could be possibly stand them in

more direct competition across Malvern if this is what your child really wants to do. Their poems need to be recited off by heart and presented to the school on Friday. We will be practicing them everyday and going through what they need to focus on. Clarity and interest are the two main aspects we will be concentrating our time on. The best girl and boy will be chosen from Room 3 to present their poem at the Malvern Speech competition.

This week the children made some gingerbread men. This was part of our reading and writing programme as the letter we were focusing on was G and the children love the gingerbread man story. We will continue with this in our writing once the poetry competition has finished. We now have a blind installed in our room which is fantastic and does the job perfectly. Thank you very much to Roger Banks for

finding and installing this for us. A big welcome to Abi Pooler who has joined us in Room 3 Keep up the great reading. You may find some of the children are coming home with books they've already read. This is because they were not fluent in reading them the first time so hopefully this time it should be easier for them. Enjoy your week.
