The Natural and Built Environments Research Centre (NBERC) is the home of research for all staff and research students in the School of Natural and Built Environments (NBE). It is a great pleasure to have all NBE staff and students within one centre as this promotes strong collegiality and a collaborative culture amongst our members – the sum is indeed greater than the parts. These were the primary goals of establishing NBERC in 2016 and they have contributed to a diverse range of successful and highly productive research activities that make a real difference to our society.

NBERC has four strands that are inherently multi-disciplinary to further support these goals: 1) Environmental Stewardship; 2) Sustainable Infrastructure and Built Environments (formerly Smart and Healthy Communities); 3) Water and Natural Resources; and, 4) NBE Education. The latter strand has established improving expertise in learning and teaching scholarship. NBERC also includes two commercially-focussed units with fabulous research facilities: Australian Flow Management Group (AFMG) and SMAG – Specialised Testing & Research Unit. In 2017 we also welcomed the renowned Discovery Circle, a citizen science program, into the NBERC community.

The leaders of each of these strands and groups have provided an overview of their activities in this Annual Report. We also hear from the NBE Head of School, Prof. Julie Mills, and our Research Education Portfolio Leaders, who have particular responsibility for guiding our higher degree research students through their journey here. I’d like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank all these individuals, and all NBERC researchers, for their amazing contributions and collegiality. I’d also like to thank the NBE professional

and technical staff, especially Neill Sanderson, Liz Stevens and Tim Golding, for their highly efficient and vital support of NBERC. I also need to acknowledge and thank Prof. John van Leeuwen, the first NBERC Director, whom I worked alongside for several months after I commenced work at the University of South Australia in early 2017, before taking over as Director in May. It has been a pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic, committed and friendly group of people.

This 2017 Annual Report (our second) provides a single summary of NBERC’s research portfolio – honours and awards obtained by staff and students, our research student projects, grants and other funded projects, publications, workshops and seminars, and other events, such as our very successful Colloquium. These details are important and informative, but they don’t capture the whole story of NBERC or recent activities in particular. I would therefore encourage you to engage with us through the NBERC website (see link below) and especially our new newsletter.

Thanks very much for your interest in and involvement with NBERC which I hope will continue in the future.

Since its formation in early 2016, NBERC has strived to deliver collaborative, interdisciplinary research and industry consulting and testing services across the broad spectrum of natural and built environments.

The component parts of NBERC, namely the four strands and two commercial arms, the leadership and governance structure, and the range of activities and achievements undertaken in 2017 are summarised in this report.

Two critical achievements in 2017 were the development of the NBERC Strategic Plan, and the establishment of the NBERC Industry Advisory Group. As Head of School I’m delighted with the progress we have already made towards achieving the objectives articulated in the Strategic Plan and with the valuable contributions from the Advisory Group.

In a recent university review of the School’s research activity and outputs there was very clear evidence that the formation of NBERC has been accompanied by significant upward trends in all key research metrics – number of outputs, quality of outputs, research income received and other measures of research activity and impact. This is no coincidence. I strongly believe that NBERC is enabling more staff and students to be part of this activity and success, and to become excited about the possibilities ahead. We are seeing the results from this, not just in quantitative measures but in the participation rates of our staff and students in research activities and projects of all kinds, within the School, with other areas of the university and with external partners.

I’d particularly like to thank some key people who have been responsible for leading NBERC in 2017 and into the future. Prof. Peter Teasdale has done excellent work as NBERC Director/Associate Head of Research from the beginning of May, 2017, after taking over from the tireless Prof. John Van Leeuwen who is easing into well-deserved retirement in 2018. Thanks also to the 2017 strand leaders – Prof. Abbas Elmualim, Assoc Prof. Topa Petit, and Assoc Prof. Mizanur Rahman for their enthusiasm, hard work and leading by example. Due to some staff changes and secondments I was responsible for leading the Education strand in 2017 but have now been able to hand that back to Dr Paul Corcoran for 2018. Thanks also to our administrative team for all of their efforts in supporting NBERC’s functions and activities, particularly Mr Neill Sanderson and Mrs Elizabeth Stevens.

Our activities for 2018 are already well underway, the Industry Advisory Group continues to be very active, the NBERC Strategic Plan continues to be implemented, workshops, seminars and meetings are being held or planned and our research activity continues to grow.

The future of NBERC certainly looks exciting for 2018 and beyond.

The Education Strand continued to gather momentum in 2017 under the leadership of Prof. Julie Mills. In late 2017 Dr Paul Corcoran returned to NBE from secondment and resumed leadership of the strand.

Strand members were active in teaching and learning research, publications, grant applications and award applications with the following key successes:

o The Environmental and Geospatial Sciences Program Team from NBE was awarded a 2017 Australian Award for University Teaching (AAUT) for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. The full citation details were: Raimondo, T, Weber, D, Payne, J, Bruce, D & Schebella, M. Citation: For transforming field-based teaching of Environmental and Geospatial Science and the attainment of critical field skills through immersive digital visualisations.

o A 2017 UniSA Teaching and Learning Grant was awarded to a team led by Dr Philip Roetman with Dr Tom Raimondo and Dr Mat Kor from NBERC working

with four academic staff from the School of Art, Architecture and Design, for a project titled: Creating virtual environments for enhanced student learning and public engagement

o Dr Tom Raimondo was named as one of the 2017 Top 5 Under 40, an ABC Radio National and UNSW initiative to recognise outstanding early-career researchers under 40 years of age for excellence in science communication. As a result he completed a two-week media residency at ABC Studios in Sydney. During this time, he was mentored by ABC journalists to produce radio and online segments showcasing his own research and engaging the general public through science communication. Dr Raimondo was also a guest on several ABC shows including Science with Dr Karl and Zan Rowe on triple j, RN Breakfast with Fran Kelly, RN Drive with Chris Bath, Mornings with Ali Clarke and Nightlife with Philip Clark.

In total the Education Strand submitted seven Expressions of Interest for the

UniSA Teaching and Learning Grants, indicating the extent of interest and activity of our researchers. Although only one was ultimately successful, the ideas from a couple of these have been incorporated into the successful grant, and other ideas have been picked up by the Division of ITEE for funding as projects via that avenue due to the recognised value of the ideas.

The Education Strand again ran a very interesting and well attended breakout session at the NBE Research Colloquium with five presentations that generated strong audience participation and lively discussion.

In 2017 the strand membership was expanded with the addition of some keen HDR students and recently appointed teaching academic staff.

The focus for 2018 will again be on successful group applications for University and National/ATN teaching and learning grants and awards, as well as ongoing mentoring and development of education research and publications within the strand.

2017 was another busy and successful year for the Environmental Stewardship strand. Several research students joined the strand and the Breaking EGS seminar series became our main discussion forum. Breaking EGS (Environmental and Geospatial Sciences) presents news and announcements, a short talk by undergraduate or Honours students, and another short talk by an established researcher or environmental manager.

The four Breaking EGS of the year hosted a diversity of speakers who inspired the audiences. On the 10th of March, Erdem Mustafa and Matt Kamp presented their second-year Ecology project, followed by Cecilia Sanchez (University of Georgia) who enthralled the audience with her talk on the movements of flying foxes in South Australia. On the 19th of May, Anthony Randell, a recent graduate having received a highly competitive Summer Scholarship from SARDI, impressed everyone with his research on seagrass restoration. Grace Hodder (University of Adelaide) then discussed the ecology of diamond firetails in the Adelaide Hills. Kathryn Ienari and Michelle Whillas demonstrated that first-year research can be creative and of great quality with their respective talks on light absorptance of roofs and

the effect of fire on sticky boobialla frequency, on the 4th of August. Philip Roetman (UniSA) then presented comprehensive research on the management of little corellas. The last Breaking EGS of 2017 involved Terry Reardon (SA Museum) who linked the fate of the critically endangered southern bent-wing bat to knowledge based on amazing technology.

Most importantly, those gatherings were followed by discussion over pizza for networking and opening new opportunities for research. Terry Reardon accepted to lead a meeting on the potential for collaboration between our strand and the SA Museum; it resulted in a proposal for a large multidisciplinary project.

In the future, it is likely that most of our meetings will follow Breaking EGS, since a main challenge is the competition among meeting requests! Our formal meeting of 5 May was very productive and helped us to establish our strand, but many regretted not being able to attend. The involvement of postgraduate students also remains a challenge, although the workshops offered by the strand attracted numerous students who rated them very highly (CV and application letter workshop in May, and job interview workshop in October). Thanks to Prof.

Chris Chow for his involvement and to the industry leaders who provided interview questions, and thanks also to Mark Carey for running the data analysis workshop in August.

We remain dedicated to the building of a vibrant and convivial research culture involving all members of our NBE community. The aims for 2018 are to increase the engagement of postgraduate students in our strand activities and to continue the establishment of processes that will benefit our 40+ members, while maintaining the sense of fun and cordiality that characterises the strand.

This year was a turning point for the strand as it realigned its name to better reflect the main research focus of its members. The new name, “Sustainable Infrastructure and Built Environments” is broad enough to embrace the cross-disciplinary research activities of the strand that span from digital technologies, smart buildings, energy and materials to sustainability, construction and project management. We are sure that this new name will better communicate the strand focus to our partners in government, industry and wider communities. The strand’s cross-disciplinary research was show cased during the NBERC colloquium 2017. The focus of the colloquium this year was closely related to the strand’s activities as evidenced by the keynote presentation on “proactive asset management and maintenance health” by Nima Gorjian (SA Water). The members of the strand had significant presence with presentations related to project management, urban planning, carbon footprint, materials strength, risk

management and transportation management. The 3rd annual South Australian Construction and Built Environment (SACBE) forum which is organised by UniSA/NBERC/SIBE has evolved to one of the “must-go” events linking University to industry in the field of construction. Supported by government, industrial and professional organisations, it attracted over 60 participants for half a day of inspired presentations and good networking. This year’s SACBE forum was focused on energy. Apart from the highlighted events, the members of the strand have maintained their high level of research quality as evidenced by the numerous publications in peer-reviewed research journals and attracted external and internal funds for research (ARC, CRC, Cat 2 and Cat 3 grants). Our strand meetings helped us maintain the inter-disciplinary collaboration and research culture and gave us the chance to discuss opportunities for further engagement

within the School and industry. We are looking at 2018 with enthusiasm and eagerness for even more interaction among the members of the strand. HDR students would be a priority so that they can be further involved in the strand’s activities. We will also focus on team building and make a genuine effort to further improve the connections between our School’s two campuses at City East and Mawson Lakes. In a time when South Australia is taking off regarding construction activity, digital technologies, project management application and focus on sustainability, we look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead!

The Water and Natural Resources (WNR) strand had a very successful year in 2017 with a strong commitment to mentoring HDR students and ECRs, developing research culture, undertaking “proof of concept” research to seek internal seed funding and linking to external industries.

WNR strand members were strongly involved in organising the multicultural “Eid Celebration” and “NBERC multi-cultural” lunch to provide an informal environment for staff and students to get together. WNR introduced 5-10 mins skill development presentations during strand meetings in 2017 and these included successful sessions on “ImageJ” and “tricks on multivariable regression analysis”. Considering chartered credentials is an important aspect of the engineering profession, we are working with strand members, the civil engineering discipline and representatives of Engineers Australia to find a suitable pathway for our HDR students and staff to become chartered professional engineers.

The WNR strand had a strong focus on preparing strand members for internal seed funding through the Research

Theme Investment Scheme (RTIS) and the Partnership Enabling Grant Scheme (PEGS). In the first strand meeting for 2017, we analysed successful grant applications from 2016, their distribution within the division and learned from the experiences of two successful applicants. Subsequently, we organised two other sub-meetings to further discuss funding opportunities. The success of these efforts was reflected in the ratio of lead CIs from WNR when compared to the division. Three out of ten successful lead CIs for RTIS in 2017 within the division were from WNR. As a follow-up, two successful RTIS applicants from 2017 shared their experience with other WNR members during our last strand meeting in 2017. Another highlight of 2017 was welcoming Prof. Chris Chow to NBERC, Prof. Chow has initiated many collaborative projects with SA Water. I am also happy to report that in 2017 WNR members were successful in wining grants, including internal grants (ECR, RTIS, PEGS funding etc.), industry/state government grants (e.g. CMAA, SA Water etc.) and national grants (ARC).

To conclude, WNR wishes to continue to collaborate via multi-dimensional research, across the strands in NBERC and achieve continued success in securing external funding, mentoring its ECR members and being actively involved in NBERC presentations. The strand also wishes to provide support to HDR students within the parameters of “transforming the PhD” and chartered credentials.

Australian Flow Management GroupThe Australian Flow Management Group (AFMG) continued to provide and expand its commercial testing and advice services in the areas of flow measurement, irrigation technology and other fields of engineering hydraulics. AFMG also continued to play an important role in research and educational activities within UniSA with a focus on hydraulics, hydrology and stormwater management.

The core services provided by AFMG are:

Commercial• Contract testing and

consultancies.• Product and technology

evaluation.

Research• Applied research for industry

based organisations and other funding bodies.

• Investigative research into our suite of commercial test methods.

Education• Provision of teaching to under-

and post-graduate student courses.

• Supervision of under- and post-graduate research projects.

• Planning and delivery of short courses for industry or government clients.

AFMG activities focus on the following objectives:

• Creating and maintaining a commercial operation that supports continual improvement and growth.

• Achieving a strong, productive, high quality research portfolio that is recognised both nationally and internationally.

• Assisting and participating in educational activities that support the AFMG portfolio and increase its reputation.

• Supporting the strategic priorities of NBERC and the greater university strategy, encompassed in Crossing the Horizon 2020.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2017

General

Australian Flow Management Group continued to broaden its reach across the needs of industry for services in water related service offered by the laboratory.

Projects

The number of overall projects that the AFMG commenced in 2017 grew by 5%. The greatest proportion of projects were commercial followed by internal work which accounts for improved activities or other routine works such as internal calibration of equipment.

Commercial

Commercial operations of the AFMG remained a significant portion of AFMG works in 2017. Of these, approximately 80% were associated with our NATA accreditation.

We also finalised certification of one of our two key reference measurement devices to satisfy Regulation 13 of the Australian Government Measurement Act. This will now enable the facility to provide services to clients who require specialised testing in accordance with the Act and allow for growth in our commercial testing services, particularly meter batch testing.

Research

AFMG completed a major research project investigating the impact of urban infill development and water sensitive urban design measures on drainage capacity in urban areas. We also began investigations into forest water use and hydrology.

A Goyder Institute project commenced, investigating alternative water resources for the expansion of the Northern Adelaide horticultural region.

Client Base

Our annual engagement with clients increased when compared to previous years. We have continued to attract long term and high profile clients locally and internationally.

Long term testing service contracts continued with both SA Water and NT Power and Water.

OUR CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR 2018

Some of the challenges and opportunities for 2018 are:

• To increase the AFMG’s support for student research projects.

• To exploit underutilised facilities including electrical testing equipment and the road surface drainage test rig.

Mr David Pezzaniti Facility Manager AFMG

SMAG – Specialised Testing & Research UnitThe SMAG –Specialised Testing & Research Unit was founded in 1980 and is now busier than ever. SMAG provides specialised testing and industrial research services for industry, government agenciesand individuals, utilising facilities and equipment that are not widely available elsewhere. Work is carried out by a team of highly experienced technical staff with input from academic staff where needed. Examples of testing completed in 2017 include:

• Point load and UDL load testing on a wide range of building components such as trusses, beams, brackets, safety skylights and roofing materials

• QA testing of valve boxes for load capacity , and testing of new designs and materials for these

• Sprayed concrete (shotcrete) round determinate panel (RDP), core box and cylinder tests for mining companies

• On-site assessment and testing of natural sand and aggregates to determine suitability for use in concrete

• Impact testing of pavers and testing new paver products

Clients in 2017 included:

• Steel Building Systems (SBS)• Department of Planning, Transport

and Infrastructure (DPTI)• Revolution Roofing• Oz Minerals• HR Products• Pybar Mining Services• Stockbrands• Kokatha Mining Services• Downergroup• SMS Geotechnical• Seels Technology• Punch Manufacturing• Austral Bricks• BSMART

A significant project in 2017 was the development and fabrication of transport and curing units for RDPs, core boxes and cylinders to be cured

and transported as one unit from mine sites to our testing laboratories. This innovation has resulted in reduced transport costs for the client, provided on site curing and reduced manual handling both on the mine site and in our testing laboratory.

Having achieved NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia) accreditation for some of our regular tests in 2016, our focus in 2017 was to maintain accreditation and continue to ensure that the systems in place for all tests will be capable of future accreditation if deemed necessary.

Our work development and invoicing for 2017 exceeded targets that were set on 2016 figures, and we look forward to continuing the growth of SMAG services in 2018.

NBERC Workshops and Seminar Series Presentations in 201713 February – Green Concrete Materials

Hosted by Dr Xing Ma, Senior Lecturer and Researcher, in the School of Natural and Built Environments and NBERC. Green concrete materials are sustainable construction materials made of recycled products, such as waste from construction sites and used tyres. Research in this field has been ongoing for the past 20 years and NBERC is active in research into rubberised concrete through an ARC project. The Workshop included a special guest presentation by visiting Professor Jianzhunag Xiao from Tongji University in China.

17 February – Energy benchmarking for sustainable water recycling operations

Dr Michael Short from NBERC presented Energy benchmarking for sustainable water recycling operations, a simple but effective tool for process optimisation and energy conservation in industrial applications. While internationally there have been two decades of energy benchmarking development and application in the water industry, the Australian water sector has only recently recognised the value of this approach for energy and cost savings, as well as greenhouse gas mitigation. Additionally, and while energy benchmarking as an optimisation tool is well developed for wastewater treatment applications, there is currently no such method for benchmarking and optimisation of water recycling processes. This seminar introduced energy benchmarking and its application in the water sector (wastewater

treatment and water recycling), followed by an overview of some results from previous research to benchmark and optimise full-scale water recycling operations in South Australia.

31 March – Introduction to Water Sensitive Urban Design and opportunities for Research

This presentation was delivered by Dr Baden Myers and gave attendees an overview of water sensitive urban design (WSUD) as a concept. It outlined how WSUD relates to stormwater peak flow management and provided an insight into research conducted by Mr David Pezzaniti and Dr Myers in the preceding three years, which has strongly focussed on the ability of WSUD measures to reduce peak flows, and ultimately flooding, in urban areas.

12 May – Project Management Workshop

Prof. Peter Teasdale, Mr Sebastien Hebert, Prof. Christopher Chow and Mr David Pezzaniti presented helpful hints and tips on building frameworks of engagement and trust with external stakeholders, how to observe changes in industry research and current research opportunities and they presented activities associated with the management of contract research and commercial projects.

24 May – CV Presentation Workshop

Assoc. Prof. Sophie (Topa) Petit from the Environmental Stewardship strand delivered a presentation on job application resources available at UniSA and how to write a successful job application and CV. The second

hour of her presentation was dedicated to a workshop where participants worked in pairs, editing each other’s CV and receiving feedback and answers to questions from the facilitator.

25 August – Project Management Workshop

Prof. Peter Teasdale, Mr Don Freeman and Ms Jacqueline Jepson presented and discussed the seven secrets of managing your PhD, including helpful hints and tips, challenges, mentors and careers, and how to effectively run your PhD.
