INTRODUCTIONFounded in 1824, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the nation’s oldest technological research University, offering degrees in Engineering, Science, Architecture, Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, Management and Information Technology. Our students represent the next generation of leaders, engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, patent holders, artists, game designers, architects and innovators from around the world.
The members of the Class of 2017 are living Rensselaer’s mission to change the world. Many of our graduates are pursuing exciting careers with companies that are industry leaders or continuing their research and education at prestigious universities around the world.
Eighty-four percent of our graduates who responded to our survey secured their future plans within six months of graduation. Future plans are defined as employment, military service, continuing education, or “other” (travel, service, not seeking, or entrepreneurship).
Our on-campus recruiting activity experienced a slight decline in the 2016-2017 academic year. The decrease observed is attributed to cancellations due to inclement weather and companies limiting their travel and utilizing long-distance methods of phone and video interviews. There has been a significant increase in the number of requests to accommodate phone and video interviews in the Interview Center, which are not reflected in this year’s report. While this may be an early indicator that interviewing practices are changing, recruiter interest in Rensselaer students remains high and employment prospects strong.
As we look forward and prepare for 2018, we anticipate our graduates will continue to be in high demand across a wide range of industries and employment sectors. The Center for Career and Professional Development is committed to maintaining and strengthening our employer network that creates connections and opportunities for Rensselaer students in the fields of sci-ence and technology, engineering, business, architecture, and humanities.

“Gaining experience through internships and co-ops not only helps you better prepare for your career after graduation, but also helps shape your idea of an ideal workplace where you want to make a long-time commitment. From when I was looking for an internship as a freshman, to the moment I landed my first job, I received tremendous support and feedback from counselors at the CCPD. They assisted me in polishing my resume, preparing for interviews, and teaching me professional skills. Without the CCPD being a go-to place for career advice, I wouldn’t be as competent and confident in pursuing my career.”

“Having real work experience through internships and co-ops gives you a competitive advantage when applying for a full-time position upon graduation. The career counselors at the CCPD guided me throughout my time at RPI, providing me with all the tools that I needed to find opportunities that align with my career goals. They helped from the beginning-- assessing my interests and skills to build a resume that is attractive to employers--all the way to the end, giving me valuable advice when I negotiated my full-time offer. The RPI community is fortunate to have a Career Center staff that is so involved and willing to help its students.”
