Dear Friends,In 2017, the United Nations Food & Agricultural Organization (FAO) reported that the number of hungry people increased to 815 million worldwide — 38 million more than the previous year. However, despite this setback, we are on a trajectory to end hunger. Over the last two decades, the number of people experiencing hunger and malnutrition decreased from 24 percent to 11 percent of the world’s population. Based on this progress, the United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goal #2: Zero Hunger by 2030. Rise Against Hunger is aligned with global initiatives to end hunger and recognizes that we must step up our efforts in order to reach this ambitious goal.

Following the adoption of Sustainable Development Goal #2, we sought to broaden our impact and created our Pathways to End Hunger: Nourishing Lives, Growing the Movement, Empowering Communities and Responding to Emergencies. Since then, we’ve made significant progress, especially in our Empowering Communities and Responding to Emergencies programs. The year was marked by a historic hurricane season, and we were able to provide emergency assistance to nearly 114,500 people in the coastal U.S. and Caribbean nations reeling from back-to-back hurricanes: Harvey, Irma and Maria.

We achieved some major milestones in 2017, and it proved to be our biggest year yet! We provided more than 72.1 million meals, served beneficiaries in 36 countries and ultimately impacted over 1.4 million lives. We engaged a record number of nearly 400,000 volunteers across the world and expanded our reach in the U.S., opening a dedicated location in the Chicago area.

Looking forward, we are committed to showing the world that it IS possible to end hunger in our lifetime. 2018 marks our 20th year as an organization, and we see a bright path to 2030 ahead. Our big plans include:

• Promoting our Public Policy Agenda by engaging volunteers in advocacy.

• Releasing our first-ever awareness campaign, This is possible., which aims to educate and call the world to support and act on Sustainable Development Goal #2.

• Engaging volunteers in eight new communities in Florida and California by implementing a new supply chain model of meal distribution.

We know that ending hunger by 2030 IS possible, but we cannot achieve it alone. The strides we have made in the past 19 years have been made possible by you, our dedicated volunteers, advocates, partners and supporters. Rise Against Hunger is in the fight against hunger for the long haul — all the way to 2030 and beyond!

Providing Nutritious MealsAcross the world, approximately one in three people are malnourished. Rise Against Hunger meals are fortified with essential vitamins and nutrients, enriched rice, soy protein and dehydrated vegetables to combat malnutrition. Once cooked, Rise Against Hunger meals contain a total of 23 vitamins and minerals. One Rise Against Hunger meal bag contains enough nutritional value for six servings. Providing healthy meals to beneficiaries in need takes us one step closer to eliminating malnutrition and ending hunger.

MICRONUTRIENTSProvided by Kraft Heinz, our micronutrient sachets contain 18 essential vitamins and minerals. The contents of the sachet are added in after the meal is cooked through.

Since 2013, the Kraft Heinz Company Foundation has contributed funding and technical expertise to help Rise Against Hunger improve the composition of the micronutrient sachets in our meals. In 2017, the foundation provided more than 12 million sachets that added micronutrients to 72.1 million Rise Against Hunger meals.

SOYRise Against Hunger uses soy protein because it is vegetarian and is a significant source of protein for our meals.

VEGETABLESDehydrated vegetables are added for nutritional value and flavor.

RICEWe use white rice because it is more cost efficient and takes less time to cook. Partners season our meals with tastes to each region's liking.

Nourished

HARVESTED: Rice is the most commonly consumed grain with regard to human nutrition and caloric intake. Along with soy or lentil proteins, vegetables and vitamins, rice is the fourth and final ingredient in our meals.

TRANSPORTED: The rice we use is sourced locally whenever possible, and transported to one of our locations around the world. From there, staff inventory and store the rice along with the other meal ingredients.

PACKAGED & BOXED: Volunteers across the globe come together to package meals for those in need. Rice and other dry ingredients are combined into a meal bag that, with water, becomes a highly nutritious

vegetarian meal. Meals are packed into boxes that are stored in warehouses until they are ready to ship internationally.

SHIPPED: Boxes of meal bags are packed inside a shipping container, leave a warehouse and make their way to one of the countries where our Impact Partners operate their programs.

DISTRIBUTED & STORED: Our Impact Partners transport the meals safely from the ports to their program sites. The meals can travel thousands of miles before they reach their final destination for distribution at schools, orphanages, clinics or vocational centers.

COOKED & SERVED: Our meals include instructions on hygiene and safe cooking practices. Most locations customize the meals into local dishes and add either vegetables or protein. Meals are served in schools, vocational training programs, medical clinics, maternal health facilities, child and youth development centers and elder care facilities.

NOURISHED: Meals attract people to education and wellness programs and prevent dropouts — especially among girls — while simultaneously alleviating short-term hunger and enabling communities to rise and break the cycle of poverty.

To end hunger by 2030, aligned with the U.N. Sustainable Development Goal #2 of Zero Hunger, Rise Against Hunger works in four focus areas known as our Pathways to End Hunger: Nourishing Lives, Empowering Communities, Responding to Emergencies and Growing the Movement. Through these Pathways, we seek to provide immediate nourishment for those in need today, while implementing sustainable solutions to hunger for tomorrow — solutions that will lift entire communities for years to come.

Rise Against Hunger supports the Sustainable Development Goals. 6

NOURISHING LIVES

We nourish lives by meeting the most basic and immediate needs of vulnerable people around the globe and supporting safety net programs that provide nourishment and skills training to aid the difficult journey out of poverty.

Our meals are distributed in partnership with local organizations like schools, encouraging increased enrollment and attendance for young students — especially girls. Partnerships with hospitals and clinics provide increased nutrition for patients to complete their treatments. In 2017, we distributed more than 72.1 million meals, with nearly 38.1 million meals going directly to Nourishing Lives initiatives.

In a Coastal Philippines Village, Children are Recovering from Malnutrition

Imagine life in a rural coastal village in the Philippines, in a home above a makeshift chicken coop. Think of the smells, the sounds and the feeling of worry of where your next meal will come from. With little income, you are concerned about your own health and the wellbeing of your child. This was the reality for Ramely, a mother living in Iloilo City. Things started to change for Ramely’s family when they began receiving nutritious Rise Against Hunger meals through partner International Care Ministries.

Ramely says the meals are a great help to her family, particularly her son, Alter. Alter has gained weight — he was previously underweight — and recovered from malnutrition. In addition to providing regular nutrients, the meals also help Ramely to save money as she no longer has to spend her entire income on food.

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES

Rise Against Hunger bolsters agricultural production and incomes through programs promoting improved agricultural methods, business skills and market access. With training and access to quality seeds and fertilizers, farmers can increase production and harvest a variety of nutritious crops. By supporting fish and livestock production, we provide pathways to diversify diets and improve nutritional outcomes. Through income generating activities, we help individuals increase their earning potential and their consistent access to food.

New Crop, Moringa, Empowers Men & Women in Northeastern India

To increase incomes and food access in northeastern India, Rise Against Hunger has teamed up with a local non-profit organization, Jaiprabha Mahila Vikas Kendra, and Rise Against Hunger India to introduce farmers to a new crop, moringa. Moringa can be harvested every 45 days and generates more consistent income compared to rice and wheat. Additionally, moringa boasts a vast nutritional content. By training farmers to grow moringa, we aim to increase the per-acre income for 100 farmers and their families and increase return on livestock by promoting goat rearing based on moringa feed.

“In addition to rice and wheat, I also grow vegetables in a local garden for my family and have a small-scale business where I sell firewood. With additional profits from farming moringa, I would like to expand my farm, [farm] more land and purchase livestock.” – Wakil, Farmer

RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIESRise Against Hunger responds to sudden and ongoing crises to meet immediate needs of affected populations and support the transition toward recovery. We have responded to emergencies by delivering food assistance, nutrition,

water filters and hygiene kits to those displaced by natural disasters and man-made crises.

In building the resilience of vulnerable people, Rise Against Hunger works hand-in-hand with a host of organizations to ensure that our meals and other life-changing aid can reach communities in crisis effectively and according to need.

Immediate Response to the Catastrophic 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season

During an unusually active hurricane season, we responded immediately by providing relief and recovery assistance to nearly 114,500 people in communities in parts of the coastal U.S. and Caribbean nations reeling from back-to-back hurricanes: Harvey, Irma and Maria.

In the U.S., we worked with multiple partners to provide hygiene kits, protein bars, hand sanitizer and warehouse space for those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in Texas and Florida. We teamed up with our in-country partners to provide critical relief in the form of more than 386,000 Rise Against Hunger meals to evacuees in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Dominica and the island of Sint Maarten, airlifting meals when necessary.

Rise Against Hunger’s Reach Stretches Across the Globe

When Eric and Irene Russell, a couple from the U.K., literally stumbled upon a Rise Against Hunger Meal Packaging Event in Brazil, they had no idea what they were in for. Planning to stay only a few minutes, they couldn’t hold back from the energy and excitement of the volunteers and ended up staying for hours! After packaging their first 100,000 meals, they were motivated to fundraise and hold the first-ever Rise Against Hunger event in the U.K. Their efforts inspired 28 U.K.-based Rotary Clubs to join together and package over 100,000 meals to be sent to Kenya, but Eric and Irene did not stop there! Five months later, they actually traveled to Kenya to visit schools and see the true impact the meals packaged at their event helped create. Eric and Irene hope to bring more Rise Against Hunger events to the U.K. and their dedication shows us just how easy it is to grow the movement to end world hunger.

Pathways to End Hunger

GROWING THE MOVEMENT

Rise Against Hunger recognizes that without the help of hundreds of thousands of dedicated volunteers around the globe, we will not be able to end hunger by 2030. That’s why Growing the Movement is the fourth tenet of our Pathways to End Hunger. Regardless of your location on the map, age, schedule or resources, we believe you can make a positive difference in the fight against hunger. Through our advocacy initiatives, we empower volunteers to help make ending hunger a priority. Even seemingly small contributions can add up to a BIG impact. In 2017 alone, we engaged nearly 400,000 volunteers worldwide to package nutritious meals for those in need.

Providing Emergency Support During Hurricane Harvey

Rise Against Hunger was able to make an impact in Texas following the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, thanks to partners Forever Living Products and the North Carolina Annual Conference (NCAC) of the United Methodist Church. Forever Living Products, our partner since 2016, donated 21,600 protein bars and 9,560 units of hand sanitizer that were successfully distributed on the ground in Houston. The NCAC of the United Methodist Church funded the distribution of 288 flood buckets and 1,383 hygiene kits.

Rise Against Hunger’s impact worldwide reaches beyond meals and nutrition. In 2017, we leveraged partnerships to secure more than $26.1 million in product donations for distribution around the globe, including:

• First aid supplies• Antibiotics and pain relievers• Clothing and shoes• Blood pressure and diabetes medications • Soap

Rise Against Hunger's awareness campaign, This is possible., was unveiled on World Food Day — October 16, 2017 — with an aim to show the world that it is, in fact, possible to end hunger in this lifetime. In celebration of this exciting launch, 800 students in New York City and New Jersey joined together to package 80,000 meals for kids in need around the world. The This is possible. campaign was created to build awareness and drive a global movement to end hunger by 2030, consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #2. By working together, a world without hunger by 2030 is possible!

Farm to Fork Initiative Empowers Communities in the Philippines

Under Rise Against Hunger Philippines’ Farm to Fork initiative, the dehydrated vegetables mixed into Rise Against Hunger meals are contracted in-country by local smallholder farmers, through a partnership with Negrese Volunteers for Change Foundation (NVC). This allows excess production of vegetables to be bought from farmers at fair market price and dehydrated by NVC for Rise Against Hunger meals supporting supplemental feeding programs in the farmers' own communities. Excess shavings from the dehydration process are then given back to the farmers to use as fertilizer. The Farm to Fork initiative by Rise Against Hunger Philippines creates a full circle approach and empowers communities in which we serve.
