At CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, we work tirelessly to find better treatments and cures for the children who need them most. Working closely with patients, researchers, partners and industry leaders, we convene the key players to help further our mission to end children’s cancer. In 2017, we made significant strides and we are thrilled to share our most significant advancements with our passionate supporters.

The outcomes of our efforts—from the annual Catapult Summit held in March to the 30 new drugs in pre-clinical testing—continue to reverberate throughout the pediatric cancer research field. Our impact is not only measured by the results of our research projects, but also by the resources we provide to the many communities and patient families we serve. In 2017, we brought together patients, families and supporters at 80 events in 26 states across 63 different cities and provided critical resources such as our free CancerCare app, webinars and educational videos.

$2.4 million over five years (2013-2017)

The CureSearch Young Investigator program addresses the loss of promising scientists from the pediatric oncology field by providing financial support to early-stage investigators. CureSearch awarded six Young Investigator grants in 2015. Dr. Gilbertson and his team are determining novel and repurposed

treatment options for three high-risk brain tumor subtypes.

Advancements include:

• 8 new patient-derived pre-clinical animal models

developed for medulloblastoma

• 1 novel high-risk ependymoma animal model created

• 3 compounds in pre-clinical testing

• 1 innovative multimodality pre-clinical trial design that

more accurately recapitulates complete human treatment

regimens in animal models

• 1 clinical trial initiated based on pre-clinical data provided

by the Gilbertson lab

Cell-based Therapy for AML Awarded $855,000 over three

years for the project

Dr. Roncarolo and her team are establishing a novel cell therapy

to reduce the toxic effects of standard acute myeloid leukemia

(AML) treatment. Advancements include:

• 1 novel cell line validated for cell therapy

• 40 pediatric AML samples utilized for pre-clinical testing

• 2 novel myeloid cell lines created

• 4 cell surface markers identified that correlate with cell killing

• 1 novel in vivo imaging method to monitor anti-leukemic activity

Integrative Analysis to Identify New Therapies for Pediatric Sarcoma Awarded $1.26 million over three

years for the project

Dr. Kung and his team are using analytical analysis of sequencing

data to identify targetable vulnerabilities in high-risk pediatric

sarcomas, including rhabdomyosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma

and osteosarcoma. Advancements include:

• 155 unique pediatric sarcoma cases collected for characterization

of master regulators

• 78 patient-derived xenograft models generated to test treatments

• 33 novel cell models developed for pre-clinical drug screens

• 3 new drugs in pre-clinical testing based on genetic drivers of

pediatric sarcomas

2017 CATAPULT SUMMIT The second annual Catapult Summit was hosted on February 26–27, 2017, at the Quadrus Center in

Menlo Park, California. The invitational gathering convened leading researchers, investors, advocates

and pharmaceutical and biotech executives who are committed to accelerating pediatric cancer

treatments.

Our uniquely curated agenda combined stimulating keynote presentations with panel debates and

interactive workshops to facilitate open discussions, idea sharing and relationship building.

The annual CureSearch Catapult Summit serves as a unique platform for fostering collaboration across

traditionally fragmented sectors. Attendees share a singular goal: to create a world where children with

cancer can lead long, healthy lives.

COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARDSLaunched in 2015, the CureSearch Community Impact Awards (CCIA) recognize community-based

programs that aim to address the immediate needs of childhood cancer patients. In 2017, CureSearch

awarded grants to hospitals and clinics with projects that provide caregiver resources and psycho-social

support for children with cancer and their families. By the end of 2017, CureSearch had supported

31 projects at hospitals across the United States, totaling more than $600,000.
