Dear Friendsof the Hendricks County Community Foundation,

Thank you for making 2017 a standout year for your Community Foundation! We expanded our impact in Hendricks County in exciting ways, partnered with generous people and organizations to make our home a better place, and made effective grants to support a variety of charitable projects and programs in our community. Thank you for making our successful year possible.

Our Community Foundation’s assets experienced another strong year of return on investments, tracking with the markets for an overall gain of 12.85%. This, combined with an increase of more than $500,000 in contributions from many generous donors, allowed the Board to approve grants and scholarships totaling over $600,000 to benefit a wide variety of Hendricks County citizens and area nonprofits in 2017.

Our unrestricted grantmaking for 2017 once again focused on partnering with our local nonprofits to build their institutional capacity to help them be as effective and efficient as possible. This played out in many exciting ways, including our monthly Nonprofit Learning Series, professional development and other capacity building grants, and our exciting volunteer job fair, Get Involved. Read on for more information on all these topics.

We are thankful for the continued support of long-time donors, our many volunteers, new friends of the Community Foundation, and our dedicated professional staff. Our Board is committed to realizing our vision of Hendricks County as a vibrant, giving community. Won’t you join us today?

With many thanks and much gratitude,

Carrie Hanni, a longtime Brownsburg resident, is a philanthropist. She resists being called one, but has always given generously of her time, talent, treasure and ties to nonprofits for which she has a passion.

As a partner in charge at Kemper CPA Group LLP’s Avon office, Carrie regularly donates, volunteers and provides pro bono public accounting expertise to the Hendricks County Community Foundation (HCCF). Like many philanthropists, she contributes in a variety of ways to our community with grace and humility.

According to the Women’s Philanthropy Institute Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, women are creating multiple, overlapping opportunities to be involved with philanthropy, giving time, talent and treasure for the common good. Over the past thirty years, Carrie and her sister philanthropists have made strides in leading business, government and the nonprofit sector.

Carrie served as the HCCF Treasurer for 3 years, chairing the Finance Committee as well as serving on the Grants Committee. As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), she also provides the HCCF staff counsel on important

nonprofit accounting issues. Last June, Carrie was the presenter for an HCCF Nonprofit Learning Series seminar, Nonprofit Accounting and Budgeting.

HCCF Involvement Began with a Family Tragedy When Carrie and her husband Gary King moved to Hendricks County in the mid-1980s with their small children, Billie, Gary and Jeff, they settled in Plainfield and then Brownsburg and immediately got involved in a variety of community organizations. “We spent time where our kids were—sports, school and church.”

Gary was a lifelong, avid baseball player, coach and fan. He was the manager that led the Brownsburg Little League Team as finalists at both the 1999 and 2001 Little League World Series. Carrie remembers, “During those years we literally lived and breathed baseball, made memories and forever friends.”

In 2008, Gary was stricken with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS). Carrie and Gary established the Gary C. King Excellence in Character and Baseball Fund at HCCF. The fund was established in 2010 as a scholarship fund for baseball

Women inPhilanthropy

Women’s Philanthropy Institute at Indiana University

• Single women are significantly more likely than single men to make a philanthropic gift.

• Women give more consistently over time than men; their contributions do not increase significantly with age.

• Women comprise 62% of donors who make contributions following their death.

• Two of the three HCCF executive directors have been women.

• Since 1998 HCCF has had approximately 136 female board members and advisors and 27 staff and volunteers.

• 6 of the 11 HCCF Board Presidents have been women.

players that possessed qualities that exemplified Gary’s life: excellence in character, academic achievement, athletic achievement, and leadership. He died in August 2010.

Since its creation, the Gary C. King Fund has made grants totaling $11,400. Today the fund is a designated fund that annually supports the programs of the Brownsburg Little League. “Providing continuing

support to Brownsburg Little League is a way to celebrate our family, amateur sports and life-long friendships,” says Carrie, proudly.

Hanni Family Establishes Legacy FundCarrie met her current husband, Jeff Hanni, in Hendricks County. A retired high school teacher and coach, Jeff raised his children in Hendricks County and is also passionate about family, sports and giving back to his community.

During the Lilly Endowment GIFT VI matching program, Carrie and Jeff established the Hanni Family Legacy Fund. “Jeff and I see this as a way to lay a foundation so that future families can have better lives where we raised our children,” says Carrie.

The HCCF Family Legacy Funds are permanent, flexible funds administered by the Community Foundation. Grants from these funds address the greatest needs in our community now and into the future.

Why Carrie Gives BackThroughout Carrie’s life she has seen the women in her family giving back so others in their communities could have better opportunities. “As humans we have an obligation to give back. I’m fortunate to have several ways I can contribute,” says Carrie.

She credits two women in her life as her strongest role models and mentors—her older sister and a senior female accountant. Both encouraged Carrie to get her accounting degree and CPA certification, and move forward in the male-dominated public accounting profession.

Carrie believes there are many ways to give back to your community. She reminds us, “In the circle of life, giving back just has to be done.”

HCCF offers many fund options for you to impact your community: scholarship funds, donor advised funds and Family Legacy Funds.

Connecting a Caring Community Through

Someone once said, “You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” HCCF hosts a volunteer job

fair, Get Involved, every year with the goal of matching volunteers who care about their community with the nonprofit organizations that need them.

Get Involved 2017 was truly a community event with 82 local nonprofits participating, and over 300 people in attendance. The local nonprofit exhibitors seeking volunteers and board members were able to connect

with community members who share their passion and want to give back. These nonprofits serve all different areas of our county—from animals and the environment to arts and culture, health and human services, sports and recreation, parks programs and youth.

Get Involved is a perfect marriage between our new strategic grantmaking focus of nonprofit capacity building and our renewed vision of Hendricks County as a vibrant and giving community. Get Involved 2017 was a success in bringing together, face-to-face, many nonprofit leaders with philanthropic-minded people looking for their place to give back. One attendee remarked, “Thank you for putting together this phenomenal event. The concept is great—one fun evening to meet over 80 nonprofits in one place to share your time, talent and treasure.“

“Get Involved was fantastic. It was so impressive to see how many nonprofits are in our area. HCCFprovided a wonderful experience for exhibitors and attendees. Thank you for providing this opportunity for all of us to ‘Get Involved’.”

High Quality Training forHendricks County Nonprofits

2017 marked the second year of the Community Foundation’s Nonprofit Learning Series, providing free learning opportunities locally for nonprofits’ staff, Board Members and volunteers. Held monthly, the learning sessions allow networking among nonprofits as well as high quality training from professionals in Central Indiana.

This year the sessions took four different approaches: workshops, involving hands on practice; webinar viewings; classroom-style lectures; and program area roundtables. The keynote presentation for the year was internationally renowned author and blogger Beth Kanter who held a full-day seminar on her book “The Happy, Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact without Burnout.” Other sessions for

the year included topics like “Writing Press Releases,” “Nonprofit Accounting & Budgeting,” and “Charity Gaming.” For 2017, sessions earned a rating of 4.81 out of 5 and hosted nearly 150 unique individuals.

New in 2017 were our quarterly Nonprofit Networking events powered by Hendricks Power Cooperative which were free as well. These networking events are community-building, allowing nonprofits the opportunity to get to know each other both personally and professionally.

You can find more information about our 2018 Nonprofit Learning Series on our website here: https://www.hendrickscountycf.org/events/category/nonprofit-learning-series/

Two nonprofits serving Hendricks County were facing needs beyond their capacity. The kitchen at Sheltering Wings, the only domestic violence shelter for women in the county, was deteriorating beyond repair, and Family Promise, a nonprofit serving the needs of the homeless, had a zoning deadline that if not met would shut their doors permanently. Both nonprofits turned to the Community Foundation for help, and in response, all 33 Legacy Funds at the Community Foundation collectively granted $20,952: $10,952 for a kitchen remodel to Sheltering Wings and $10,000 for a new driveway at Family Promise. Legacy Funds at HCCF, permanent but flexible funds, power our unrestricted grantmaking program designed to build capacity in our local nonprofits.

Legacy Fund Grant to Sheltering WingsIn many homes, the kitchen is the center of daily family life. The same is true at Sheltering Wings where the kitchen is a gathering place for the women and children who call the shelter home. The old kitchen appliances and cabinetry had become unusable; however the grant from HCCF’s Legacy Funds helped the nonprofit upgrade its kitchen to make it more efficient, easier to clean, and better suited for health and nutrition classes.

The upgrades have transformed the way the residents at Sheltering Wings interact and work in their kitchen. Sheltering Wings Executive Director Cassie Martin spoke of the new homelike environment, “We believe our residents deserve our very best, and we strive to help them build stable and independent lives. Our partnership with HCCF helps us to do that. We love our new kitchen!”

Legacy Fund Grant to Family PromiseFamily Promise was in danger of losing their building due to a zoning issue. They rent their Resource Center

from the Avon Library, and in order to use the building, the Zoning Board granted the nonprofit a variance which required them to pave the driveway as a condition. They were given 18 months to complete the paving, but they simply did not have the funds. Through the collective grantmaking power of the Legacy Funds at HCCF, Family Promise applied for and received a grant of $10,000, enough to pay for the repaving and meet the zoning deadline. This grant allowed Family Promise to keep their doors open to homeless families in Hendricks County.

Executive Director Julie Randall commented, “HCCF listens to the community and addresses the real needs as they occur. Thank you for hearing our need and believing in us! There is so much good happening in our community for those who need it the most. Thank you HCCF for leading the way, and for being responsive and thoughtful while inspiring a caring community. “

When donors invest in a Legacy Fund at the Community Foundation, it allows HCCF to continue to grant to organizations like Sheltering Wings and Family Promise, and it gives the donor a way to establish a family legacy that will make an impact on their community forever.

“HCCF listens to the

community and addresses

the real needs as they occur.

Thank you HCCF for

leading the way…”
