Dear Compatriots,

It is my pleasure to outline the fundraising activities from the past year in the SAR Foundation’s annual report. 2017 brought progress and growth to our Foundation with the help of donors like you. We saw one of the best years for fundraising in recent history.

The highlight of the past fundraising year was without question the success of the Patten Challenge. You may recall that at the Knoxville Congress, Compatriot Lanny Patten issued a challenge. If the SAR raised $300,000 in support of the Solid Light Plan by December 31, he would match that generosity with a personal gift of $100,000. By late December, it was clear that the Patten Challenge had been met -- Lanny himself declared that his challenge had been met!

The Patten Challenge was not achieved by the generosity of only a few people, but rather by over 850 unique donors who made gifts at all levels. Close to a third of those donors were making their first-ever gift to the SAR Foundation! These funds will be used to finalize the innovative plans for the galleries and exhibits of the SAR Museum and Education Center. The mission of the SAR is to be patriotic, historical and educational. This mission is being incorporated into every aspect of the design. Once completed, it will be an engaging and interactive space for visitors of all ages. For more information about the design, please see the updated floor plan on page 4 or visit the newly relaunched SAR Foundation webpage, www.SARFoundation.org.

The past year also saw staffing changes for the SAR Foundation with Sarah Strapp Dennison joining the team as our first professional fundraiser. Sarah brings to the SAR Foundation expertise and professionalism, which is most welcome, and we look forward to working with her to maximize our fundraising efforts. With all that we have accomplished in 2017, it would be easy to look back and savor our success. But instead, let us look forward. Together we are poised on the edge of true and lasting progress in fulfilling our mission and advancing our organization toward our institutional goals.

Sincerely,

Joseph W. Dooley President, SAR Foundation President General, NSSAR 2013-2014

“It is wonderful to work for an organization that has so many different projects which donors can choose to support. I look forward to helping each donor to find the project that is right for them and the SAR achieve it’s fundraising goals.”

Members of the Founders Circle have chosen to remember the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution or the SAR Foundation in their estate plan with a gift of $10,000 or more. These gifts, made after your lifetime can not only give you the benefit of knowing that you will continue to support the SAR, they may also offer tax benefits to you. If you are interested in becoming a member of The Founders Circle please talk to your family and your estate planning professional and then contact Sarah Strapp Dennison at (502) 315-1777.

The SAR Foundation would like to thank Solid Light, Inc. for their generous in-kind donation of $550,000 towards the cost of the design fees for the SAR Museum and Education Center. Solid Light has designed award-winning projects for several renowned institutions including Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, the Falls of the Ohio Visitor Center, and the Delta Blues Museum. Their unmatched creativity is marked by an adept ability to celebrate history. It is truly an honor that they are working with the Sons of the American Revolution to tell the story of our shared patriot ancestors and the founding of our nation. With their generous gift and the success of the Patten Challenge, the SAR is one step closer to finalizing the plan for our interactive and interpretive gallery space, the SAR Museum and Education Center.

The SAR Museum and Education Center will be more than a traditional museum. It will be a sensory experience connecting visitors to the past and highlighting how the freedoms secured almost 250 years ago by our patriot ancestors still have an impact on our world of today. The SAR’s mission is to be patriotic, historical and educational, and these ideas are at the heart of the planned design. Each carefully crafted element, from the sweeping graphics to the interactive digital components is being designed to educate and inform visitors about the American Revolution. The SAR Museum and Education Center will not just be an activity for a rainy afternoon, but rather an experience that will stay with visitors long after they leave – and if they are eligible, to inspire them to join the SAR as a member.

The Solid Light Plan:Join the SAR in creating a world-class museum that inspires a personal connections with history.

The SAR Museum and Education Center will be a vibrant part of the headquarters of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution located in Louisville, Kentucky on the city’s Museum Row. The Solid Light Plan will include elements that will allow the SAR Museum and Education Center to be shared with states and chapters across the country for use in classroom presentations and other educational outreach efforts. The SAR Museum and Education Center not only advances the SAR’s institutional goals and fulfills our mission, but will make the story of the American Revolution accessible to new audiences of all ages.

Much has been accomplished, but funds are still needed to finalize the Solid Light Plan. If you have not done so yet, please consider making a gift to this once-in-a-lifetime project. And if you have already given – thank you! Gifts of all sizes have an impact and naming opportunities are still available at qualifying levels. With your help, we will be able to complete the SAR Museum and Education Center in time to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of our nation in 2026. There is simply no more fitting way to honor our patriot ancestors than to educate the public about our legacy of liberty. Help the SAR Foundation to complete the Solid Light Plan today by making your gift online at www.SARFoundation.org or by calling Sarah Strapp Dennison at (502) 315-1777.
