Thanks to Exeter Supply for sponsoring the printing of the programs. 9Thanks to Exeter Supply for sponsoring the printing of the programs.

1. Construction Do’s & Don'ts: The operators and managers of water/wastewater systems play an important role in the construction process of new systems and upgrades to existing systems. Unfortunately, they are often left out of the process and costly mistakes happen when they could have been avoided. Learn about your role from pre-construction, construction, post-construction and the inspection process. Find out the things that you can do to improve the process and outcome and common mistakes to avoid. Also, what to expect as part of the construction inspection process. (3 W & WW CH)

2. Intro to Geographic Information Systems (GIS): This class covers the basics of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for mapping your water, wastewater, and/or stormwater system. Includes GIS hardware, software, background, data types and collection and a field demonstration. ( 3 W & WW CH) This class is offered again on Wednesday afternoon, class #28.

3. Lime Slaking, Traditional Low & High Density Lime Systems: This class is an overview of the performance differences of three lime preparation and dosing processes, including positives and pitfalls of lime systems. Topics covered include basic lime chemistry, lime types, slurry preparation and their applications. Additionally, the class will cover design considerations for storing, feeding, and flow promotion of dry lime and lime slurries and the types of lime equipment for each type of system. (applied for 3 W & WW CH)

4. Cross-Connection & Backflow 101: This class is designed for water treatment plant operators and administrators. This class covers basic backflow hydraulics, different types of cross-connections, and the degree of hazard, describes in detail how to apply protection and to prevent backflow using air gaps and backflow prevention devices. We will also explain how the devices work and will cover proper installation guidelines. Finally, we will cover the elements of a comprehensive cross-connection control program, gauge care, repair and maintenance considerations, etc. (3 W & WW CH)

5. Sourcewater, Treatment and Other Causes of Lead Contamination: This class will discuss corrosivity in sourcewater and in treated water, and its impact on the release of lead into drinking water. We will also look into drinking water's usually minor contribution to lead contamination of humans, and the need to use common sense in our efforts to minimize that contamination. (applied for 3 W CH) This class is offered again Wednesday morning, class #22.

6. Chemical Feed Math Refresher: Operators are required to complete various math calculations to assist in operations within a treatment facility. This course will review chemical feed calculations. (3 W & WW CH)

7. Wastewater Jar Testing: Introduction to basic jar test math and concepts, and how the jar test can aid operators in the process control of treatment. (applied for 3 WW CH) This class is offered again Thursday morning, #54.

8. Wells & Pump Asset Management & Abandonment: This class will discuss the best practices to maximize a water well’s performance and lifecycle. Learn how a proactive, preventative approach to maintaining water wells and pumps, the water system’s most critical assets, can save time, money and keep the regulators happy. PA DEP’s recent change in regulations for proper well abandonment will also be covered. (3 W CH)

9. Chloramination Disinfection: The focus of this class is for water quality measurements in water plants that are using the process of chloramination. Topics covered in the class include disinfection strategies, colorimetric analysis and pH. Parameters measured by the attendee will be free and total chlorine, free ammonia and chloramines and pH. Time will be spent on the proper use of standards and verification of accuracy. The class objectives will be met by presenting theory, incorporating practical applications of analytical techniques, and “hands-on” experience with each parameter. Process Control Chloramination equipment will also be discussed. (3 W CH)

10. I&I Tool-Belt:  How to Find It, Measure It, Fix It & Confirm Results: I&I is an elusive problem, where each system, and even basins within a system, require customized plans.  This class will address topics ranging from “in-house” find and fix methods thru professional I&I studies, and everything in between.  Topics such as basin/sub-basin-specific flow metering, mapping, inspection, prioritization of needs, budgeting and various methods of repair will be taught.  In-class demonstrations, samples, specifications and handouts will be provided, as well as many pictures and videos of real-world scenarios. (3 WW CH)

11. Fixed Film: This course covers the basics of fixed film in wastewater treatment. Overview of the treatment technique. Includes sections on integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) and moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) (3 WW CH)

12. Activated Sludge Processes: This class will assist operators with operational troubleshooting strategies, and problem solving techniques for an Activated Sludge Process. This class will help operators understand control parameters to operate an activated sludge process and will be specifically geared to making the operator understand the day to day adjustments of running an activated sludge plant. (3 WW CH)

13. How To Work Safely With AC Pipe Overview: This class will cover why Asbestos Cement (AC) pipes found in municipal water and wastewater systems may pose a health risk to workers when the pipes are being disturbed during maintenance, repair and pipe removal activities. Students will learn the types of asbestos found in AC Pipes, asbestos health effects, federal and state regulatory compliance and “do’s and do not’s” when working on AC pipes during emergencies and planned maintenance activities. (3 W & WW CH) This class is offered again on Wednesday afternoon, class #29.
