Recognising the importance of sustainable urban development and supporting the global commitment to the UN New Urban Agenda, the FIA has decided to take a proactive role in shaping the future of our cities. Transport and mobility are the two core elements of a liveable city environment and it is the role of the FIA to come up with solutions that allow people to move in a safe, efficient and sustainable manner. The FIA Smart Cities initiative has become the first programme aligning the realms of motor sport and user mobility under a common framework of innovations and sustainability. This initiative represents a platform where technologies piloted in Formula E can be observed in practice, and where city authorities can share their views about challenges and opportunities in urban transportation. By bringing together committed city authorities, mobility experts, innovators and academia, we can make a confident step towards a smart and sustainable urban future.“

On the path to reaching sustainable development targets, transport authorities seek for innovative solutions to meet a growing mobility demand and tackle existing urban mobility issues: pollution, congestion and road safety hazards.

Making urban mobility more sustainable and efficient has an enormous benefit to the health and liveability of the cities and their dwellers. The application of smart technologies and inclusive policies can help cities tackle issues resulting from the process of rapid urbanisation and economic growth.

The FIA Smart Cities initiative was launched as a platform for knowledge generation and information exchange in the field of sustainable urban mobility. The initiative led by the FIA and supported by Formula E, Michelin, ENEL, Julius Bär, and Digital Leaders Ventures, comprises three core pillars, notably the Forums, a Cities Award and a Global Startup Contest. This multidimensional approach allows us to bring together actors from various fields, from young entrepreneurs to experienced policy-makers, and foster the process of knowledge sharing.

Built on the axes of Sport and Mobility, the initiative represents a true testimony of the FIA’s comparative advantage to play a role in defining the future of sustainable mobility. The FIA Formula E platform provides a unique arena to showcase innovations in motor sport that help identify potential synergies between technological development and mobility needs.

Finally, the involvement of FIA Member Clubs in the Forum’s programme shows the relevance and importance of urban development to Mobility Clubs and their evolving membership networks.

FIA SMART CITIES FORUM IN MEXICO CITY

The first FIA Smart Cities Forum was inaugurated by distinguished representatives of Mexico City, including the President of OMDAI and FIA Vice-President for Sport José Abed, the Chairman of the Board of Grupo Carso Carlos Slim Domit, as well as the Undersecretary for Mobility of Mexico City Laura Ballesteros. Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E Holdings, and Esteban Gutiérrez, Mexican racing star, also joined the debate showing how the Formula E platform can contribute to driving innovation in cities and promote cleaner mobility.

The discussion was led by experienced panelists representing local authorities, UN institutions, research and development agencies as well as the FIA network. Speakers explained how policies and services implemented in Mexico City can help reap the benefits of urbanisation and improve current mobility patterns. As noted by the local transport authorities, electrification of the fleet, on-demand mobility services as well as more efficient urban planning are among the core ingredients of the city’s sustainable mobility plan. Experts from the private sector shared recent developments in smart grid infrastructure, pointing to new synergies between technologies and mobility solutions. All panelists agreed that the use of technologies was synergistic with a dramatic increase of cities moving towards more efficient and sustainable transport systems.

FIA SMART CITIES GLOBAL STARTUP CONTEST

The dimension of technological know-how of the initiative is featured through the FIA Smart Cities Global Startup Contest where a selection of visionary entrepreneurs present their ideas on scaling innovations to make cities more liveable. At each event, organised on Thursday before the FIA Smart Cities Forum, the top ten startups that have entered the competition present their company to the jury. Innovative ideas and business topics are focused on the areas of “Autonomous Driving and eMobility”, “Hardware and Smart Infrastructure”, “Big Data and Artificial Intelligence”, and “Sharing Economy and Digital Services”.

To activate this platform, Digital Leaders Ventures is partnering with the FIA to support the contest with the total fund of $1,000,000 disbursed among winning startups through the three seasons of the FIA Smart Cities initiative. Winners are chosen by the high level jury, composed of selected mobility experts, FIA representatives and the Founding Partners of the initiative. Three shortlisted entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas during the Forum where the one most disruptive and scalable business model is announced as the winning project.

WINNER OF THE FIA SMART CITIES GLOBAL STARTUP CONTEST IN MEXICO: ECONDUCE

The Mexican startup econduce was chosen as the winner of the FIA Smart Cities Global Startup contest in Mexico. The startup received its prize during a dynamic session of the Forum.

PROJECTEconduce is a network of shared electric scooters available in the city of Mexico.

FIA SMART CITIES TALK IN PARIS

On the occasion of the second Paris ePrix, Jean Todt invited the Mayor of Paris and President of the C40, Anne Hidalgo, to share thoughts on the future of urban road safety. This debate on how road hazards in urban areas can be minimised or fully eliminated became the first FIA Smart Cities Talk, held in the framework of the Smart Cities initiative.

About 1.25 million people die every year as a result of crashes on the world’s roads and road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among people aged between 15 and 29 years, according to the World Health Organisation. Cities and global leaders have a part to play in communicating globally about this public health issue and educating public about measures that can help improve safety performance on the roads.

Jean Todt and Anne Hidalgo also discussed the growth in motorisation rates, expected to increase from 1 billion vehicles in 2010 to 1.6 billion by 2035, and exceed 2.1 billion by 2050, which will further strain the infrastructure of cities, already struggling to combat rising pollution levels and congestion. The growing number of vehicles on the road is also directly correlated with the number of crashes on urban rates. A lot can be learnt from the Safety Control Center, monitoring the safety performance of electric vehicles racing on the track. Transferring experience from track to road can ultimately help reduce the number of crashes on urban roads. The FIA also committed to further promote the convergence between the Sport and Mobility pillars, activating new opportunities to spread the message about road safety and sustainable mobility.

The FIA Smart Cities special event was also proud to welcome Wayde van Niekerk, 400m Olympic Gold Medal and World Champion, who is one of the 13 ambassadors of the #3500LIVES campaign launched to help government officials convey a message about the 3,500 people who die in car crashes worldwide every day. The Executive Director of UNEP, Erik Solheim, also joined his voice to the discussion, explaining that cities should implement technologies along the axes of both safety and sustainability.

FIA SMART CITIES FORUM IN BERLIN

The Berlin ePrix was picked as the stage for the European edition of the FIA Smart Cities Forum. Today more than ever before, cities require highly strategic transport planning. Innovative information and communication technologies offer a solution to balance out mobility supply and demand in a more efficient manner. Users no longer need to adapt their travel patterns to existing modes and times of transit as they can now benefit from more flexible, customised and easily adaptable mobility solutions. The speakers of the Forum pointed out that new mobility solutions in European cities are tightly linked to new trends in the automotive sector, including electrification and vehicle automation.

The German capital shared its long-term vision on the zero emission mobility plan. Germany aims at reaching the status of a main provider for electric mobility by 2020. This trend is adopted by many European cities where electric mobility is perceived as a founding pillar of national environmental, technological and economic development strategies. To advance this goal, there is a need for an open and collaborative marketplace that allows relevant stakeholders to share expertise, create synergies and optimise the use of technologies when delivering a new mobility service. The panel discussion has concluded that a link between public and private transport can ultimately result in an harmonised real-time multi-modal transport system that will make our cities more liveable.

The Forum concluded that governments and mobility service providers should stay mindful about the impact of new mobility services on the broader transport system and its potential to contribute to the growth of the smart city ecosystem.

WINNER OF THE FIA SMART CITIES GLOBAL STARTUP CONTEST IN BERLIN: ONTRUCK

During a dynamic session of the Forum, the winner of the Berlin contest went on stage to receive its prize and present OnTruck, a service currently implemented in Madrid and Catalonia, aiming at modernising and facilitating the transportation of goods.

PROJECTOnTruck is an online platform that gathers companies and professional fright carriers in order to ship pallets of goods.

IMPACT ON SMART CITIESOnTruck makes use of technologies as disruptive and original as the ones already used by companies such as Uber and Cabify. It takes advantage of the real-time connectivity of the parties involved and makes sure to understand their needs.

CONTEXTThe company has picked the perfect time to join the new trend dominating all industries currently undergoing change: instant connection between users and suppliers, efficiency, control, flexibility and adaptability. OnTruck is thus opening up a new channel defined by innovation and technology in the field of road transportation.

STRENGTHSOnTruck is the first company of innovation-oriented logistics and transport born with the ambition to make shipment of goods easier. Its team of professionals has international experience in the technology logistics sector (land sector short and long-distance shipping, and warehouse management). FIA SMART CITIES FORUM IN MONTREAL

During the third edition of the Smart Cities Forum, Jean Todt and Mayor Coderre reminded the audience that fostering urban leadership and advancing technological development is imperative to enhance urban mobility systems around the world.

The theme of the last FIA Smart Cities Forum was defined around the concept of Smart Data and its use for Smart Mobility systems. Canadian provinces are digitising their cityscape at a rapid pace, constantly introducing new services and initiatives. This technological advancement enables city leaders to collect and analyse transport-related data in a more efficient and practical way.

The phenomenon of intelligent data flow is underpinning the smart city framework as never before. A more efficient use of information in the transportation sector is twofold: on the one hand, smart data is used to run smart technology; on the other hand, it allows designing demand-driven policies and services. For cities looking to implement smart city projects, it is important to find a right balance between efficient data analysis and its practical application.

Panelists referred to the importance of community engagement in the technological advancement of transportation systems. Cities rolling out smart data projects need to inform residents about the type of data that will be collected, as well as about the way it will be used and applied within urban mobility systems. The redefinition of mobility around user needs points to the necessity to ensure synergies between data and technological development, consistent with specific city needs.

Public authorities should be open for more innovative solutions to better understand evolving mobility needs. Users who look for clean and sustainable forms of transportation are defining the future of mobility systems in urban areas.”

Created to identify, support and invest in the most successful startups empowering smart cities, the contest is open to visionary entrepreneurs. Selected by a jury of international experts, the winner of the Montreal contest was Wavelite.

FIA SMART CITIES AWARD

Calling for applications of innovative mobility projects, the FIA Smart Cities Award represents a platform for knowledge-exchange and experience-sharing among cities committed to enhance their urban transportation.

All cities hosting a Formula E race during Season III were invited to apply for the Award, sharing their initiatives on a concrete smart mobility project or service.

The announcement of the Award winner became a unique addition to the Montreal edition of the Forum. The project submitted by the City of Montreal was chosen as the strongest application, meeting the important criteria of relevance, impact and scalability. Successful mobility-focused initiatives undertaken by the City of Montreal will be shared with all cities joining the Formula E journey in the future.
