“ In my first year at RMIT, I was invited to a talk hosted by the Australian Food Engineering Association, which was one of the pivot points in my career as the speakers encouraged gaining work experience.“By the start of second year, I began my first part-time job as a student engineer at Vipac Engineers & Scientists, at a testing lab conducting quality control of consumer bathroom products.“My advice to RMIT students is to start early. Work experience of any kind will allow you to practise proper time management but also deal with diverse personalities from all sorts of situations.”

Foundation Studies

Strong foundations for success

Foundation Studies prepares high-school students for university study. It is recognised for entry into degree and diploma programs at RMIT and is an alternative to taking the Australian Year 12.

As an RMIT Foundation Studies student, you will be part of the university from day one, learning from university staff and studying at RMIT’s vibrant City campus. You will have access to libraries, laboratories, studios, IT equipment, student services and clubs – everything RMIT has to offer.

Foundation Studies has three tailored streams for you to choose from:

— Art, Design and Architecture— Business— Science, Engineering and Health

We also offer a General program that provides freedom to choose a range of courses from any of the streams.

Learn more about the program structure and electives: www.rmit.edu.au/programs/fs016 .

You should take Foundation Studies if:

— You have completed a Year 11 equivalent and need some extra preparation before beginning university.

— You have completed Year 12 but cannot gain direct university entry.

— You have not done as well as you had hoped in previous studies and need an alternative pathway to university.

— Your preferred program specifies a prerequisite that you have not completed, such as a specific subject or portfolio.

Foundation Studies provides you with a pathway to further study at RMIT University.

Foundation Studies scholarships

RMIT awards a number of scholarships to Foundation Studies students each year. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and personal achievement and are open to students from all countries.

www.rmit.edu.au/international/scholarships

High-quality teaching and learning

Foundation Studies teachers are experienced in working with international students and understand the needs of young people studying in another country, often away from family and friends.

Small class sizes combined with the latest technology

Foundation Studies classes are small with an average of 20 to 25 students in each class. Classrooms are equipped with the latest audio visual technology, as well as science labs, design studios and workshops.

End-to-end student support

Specialised staff will be your point of contact from your arrival until you complete your program. They will provide you with guidance and advice, and connect you with other university services, including Foundation Studies Language Support.

Exciting social activities

Several celebrations and events are held throughout the year, including orientation activities, our annual Spring party, a student art and design exhibition, a ski trip and an end of year lunch.

Making Connections mentoring program

The Making Connections mentoring program is exclusive to new international students studying in Foundation Studies. It is a free social program that aims to support Foundation Studies students to make friends and adjust to their new environment and culture.

“ I would recommend the Foundation Studies course because it gives students an idea of what the bachelor degree will be like. There’s not a lot of stress as it eases students into the idea and prepares the students for their chosen future degrees.”

Further InformationAustralian Government regulations for student visas

Students are granted a student visa, subject to a number of conditions. Students must:

— maintain enrolment in a CRICOS-registered program

— complete their program within the expected program duration, based on a full-time load unless extenuating circumstances exist

— maintain visa eligibility such as education level, academic progress and attendance

— keep RMIT notified of their address, and any change of address within seven days

— maintain overseas student health cover for the full duration of their student visa

— have the financial ability to meet all costs in Australia (including travel, tuition and living expenses)

— ensure any family members of school age attend school in Australia

— abide by student visa work limitations— complete at least six months of study in their

principal program (the highest program in a package) unless permission to transfer is granted by the principal provider.

For up-to-date information on student visa conditions, refer to www.border.gov.au/Trav/Stud .

A description of the Australian Government’s legal framework to ensure quality education and consumer protection for international students is available at: https://internationaleducation.gov.au/regulatory-information/pages/regulatoryinformation.aspx .

Enrolment variation and your student visa

Enrolment variation refers to any change to your enrolment status, including deferring your program, applying for a Leave of Absence or cancelling enrolment. RMIT is legally required to inform the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) of enrolment variations and changes. It is important that you understand how changing your enrolment can impact the validity of your student visa.

www.rmit.edu.au/international/student-visa

Students under 18

If you are under the age of 18 at the time of applying for your visa, you must have accommodation and welfare arrangements in place that have been approved by either DIBP or RMIT.

www.rmit.edu.au/international/under18

Students with families

RMIT welcomes students being accompanied by their families. If you wish to bring your spouse or children to Australia, you are responsible for supporting them financially (including the payment of annual school fees). Full-time education is compulsory for all children in Victoria from the age of five to 15 years.

For further information, please refer to your nearest Australian diplomatic post, or the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

Important fee information

— The program and fees information applies to students commencing programs between 1 January and 31 December of the selected academic year.

— All fees are quoted in Australian dollars (AU$) and apply to RMIT University’s Australian campuses only.

— RMIT’s application fee is non-refundable, but will be credited to your tuition fee deposit once you accept your offer and commence your program.

— For details on additional costs, please visit www.rmit.edu.au/programs/fees/other . For full-time students, the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) for 2016 is AU$290. Refer to www.rmit.edu.au/programs/fees/ssaf .

— Fees are held constant for each calendar year and RMIT may increase the fees by an amount that will not exceed 7.5% each year.

— Fee increases are applied at the beginning of each calendar year; therefore commencing mid-year students will find that the total cost of their program will be slightly higher than if they had commenced in February.

— Fees are invoiced on a study period basis according to the enrolled load for that particular study period except for the following two sectors:

• English Language is charged at a weekly fee

• Victorian Certificate of Education is charged a flat semester fee

Australian sanctions laws

RMIT University is subject to United Nations (UN) and Australian sanctions laws that may affect your eligibility to enrol in particular programs.

Applicants from sanctioned countries are encouraged to apply early and allow additional time for their application to be processed.

For more information about UN and Australian sanctions laws, including a list of sanctioned countries, please visit www.dfat.gov.au/ international-relations/security/sanctions/pages/sanctions.aspx .
