Berengo Studio is a furnace and studio on the Venetian island of Murano. It was established in 1989 by Adriano Berengo whose goal was to take glass to a new level in the world of contempo-rary art. By marrying the craftsmanship of centu-ries-old techniques with contemporary creativity, he created an unique and exciting space, a glass furnace for artists.

Since the late 1980s, more than 300 contemporary artists have expanded their oeuvre by creating works of art in glass. The Berengo roster includes Tony Cragg, Thomas Schütte, Jaume Plensa, Erwin Wurm, Zhang Huan, Song Dong, Vik Muniz, Jake and Dinos Chapman and Cai Guo-Qiang.Many of the works created at Berengo Studio are found today in private and public collections worldwide, including the Louvre in Paris, MAD (Museum of Arts and Design) in New York, and the Corning Museum of Glass in upstate New York. Berengo Studio also works in partnership with Fondazione Berengo in promoting internships and residencies, wel-coming students and artists to the world of glass.

What a Symposium at SOFA Chicago!A panel discussion entitled Contemporary Art from Glass in an Age of Blurred Boundaries, took place at SOFA Chicago in November. The panel members were the art critic, James Yood, a contrib-uting editor to GLASS magazine, Koen Vanderstukken, author of the book Glass, Virtual Real, and Laura Bresolin from Fondazione Berengo. Moderated by Andrew Page who is the editor of GLASS: The UrbanGlass Art Quarterly, the panel explored the acceptance of glass as a medium in contemporary art. The panelists agreed that Glasstress with the works realized at Berengo Studio were one of the driv-ing forces that introduced glass into the contemporary and fine art world.

Jan FabreAdriano Berengo met with the unstoppable Jan Fabre in his labo-ratory theater Troubleyn in Antwerp, Belgium, to discuss exciting new projects. Stay tuned for further news on Fabre’s incredible works that will be presented in 2017.

Wael Shawky’s “Cabaret Crusades”

The Egyptian artist Wael Shawky, the recip-ient of the first edition of Mario Merz Prize, had a solo exhibition at The Kunsthaus Bre-genz where he presented “The Secrets of Karbala,” the last of his film trilogy “Cab-aret Crusades.” The film tells of the story of the Crusades from an Arab perspective and stars over 350 glass marionettes as the performers. Berengo Studio fabricated the marionettes (120 of which are fully artic-ulated) in collaboration with Shawky in 2015. “The Secrets of Karbala” premiered at MoMA PS1 in New York in January 2016.

16.07 - 23.10.2016

In November 2016, the marionettes travelled back to Italy for a solo exhibition at Castello di Rivoli in Turin.

FONDAZIONE BERENGO

In 2014, Adriano Berengo founded Fondazione Berengo to be a leading institutional voice pro-moting the glass of Murano in the world of fine art and revitalizing the Venetian glassmaking island.

Fondazione Berengo is based in the neo-Gothic Palaz-zo Franchetti in Venice and will sponsor Glasstress 2017 LIVE!. Visual artists, painters, sculptors, musicians, and designers from Europe, China, the United States, Russia and the Middle East have been invited to create works of art in glass to be presented in the exhibition in the 57th Venice Biennale of Art.In four editions since its debut in 2009, Glasstress has been an official collateral event of the Venice Biennale. In 2011, Glasstress began to travel and was presented in the cities of Riga, Stockholm, New York, Beirut, and London. In pre-senting Glasstress 2015 Gotika, Fondazione Berengo en-joyed a collaboration with the prestigious State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. As a second venue for Glasstress and a home for its per-manent collection, the Fondazione opened an exhibi-tion space on Murano in an old glass furnace that has not been used for decades. Fondazione Berengo also promotes artists’ residencies and internships in partnership with Berengo Studio with the objective of educating future generations of glass masters and glass professionals.

We are busy working on Glasstress 2017 LIVE! to be held for the fifth time at the Palazzo Franchetti, home of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, in the Venice Biennale of Art. Artists from all disciplines have been asked to interpret in their works the simplest and yet most complex word that gives title to this year’s exhibition: LIVE! In its very essence, Glasstress is an attempt to give new life to an old material. Glasstress 2017 LIVE! will also feature an installation in the garden of the Palazzo by the Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen whose works drive social and scientific debates on biodiversity and sustainable ecosystems. This project is made possible by the generous support of ECO-oh!.

ZAHA HADID Retrospective | 27.05 - 27.11.2016

Fondazione Berengo sponsored the exhibition “ZAHA HADID” at the Palazzo Franchetti, the first retrospective of the famed architect after her untimely death earlier this year. At the ope-ning gala dinner, Anna Tikhomirova, the first soloist of Bolshoi Ballet, made a stunning tribute ballet performance entitled the “Beauty of Movement.” Architecture critics, students, professors, clients and collectors were among the many visitors who enjoyed the show and marveled at the breath of her works and the beau-ty and complexity of her buildings. Running concurrently with the Architecture Biennale, the exhibition featured Hadid’s early paintings and drawings, maquettes of major projects, research projects, models, photographs and video installations. A spe-cial thank you to Zaha Hadid Architects and Zaha Hadid Design for making this exhibition possible and to our supporter Stone Italiana and our main partner Falconeri.

The Glass Art Society Selects Murano The Glass Art Society (GAS), a non-profit organization with more than 1,500 artists and glass lovers, has chosen Murano to host the 47th annual GAS conference. In May 2018, Murano will open its furnaces for demonstrations and seminars on the evolution of glass as a means of artistic expression. The initiative is sponsored by Fondazione Berengo and the Italian artists who serve on the Steering Committee for the conference.

30 Years After “Beelden in Glas” Thirty years after the groundbreaking exhibition “Beelden in Glas” in Oude Horn, Netherlands, which featured Lino Taglia-pietra and Dale Chihuly who collaborated with artists like Tony Cragg. Fondazione Berengo and the Nationaal Glasmuseum Le-erdam, with Hélène Besançon, started in December 2016 a joint project. The first phase consists of a conference that questions the development and acceptance of the binom glass and contem-porary art in a European context. The project will continue with appointments in 2017 and 2018 ending with an exhibition that shows the European achievements of the last 30 years.

Glasstress Becomes MusicMax Casacci, guitarist and leader of the Italian group Subsonica, and Daniele Mana, also known as Vaghe Stelle, produced Glasstress, Glass Music, an album of electronic music. The rhyth-mics were realized by recording the sounds of the glass while it was being made and broken in the furnace at Berengo Studio. On October 4th, with the contribution of Fondazione CRT, two exclusive live sets of Glasstress played in the “Camera di Vetro” in Palazzo Madama in Turin, which hosts a permanent collection of glass objects dated from ancient Roman times to the 19th century.

Joyce J. Scott 2016 MacArthur Fellow

Congratulations to our friend and appreciated artist Joyce J. Scott who was named as a 2016 MacArthur Fellow, the prize given by the MacArthur Foundation and popularly known as a “genius grant” for exceptionally talented individuals in a wide range of fields. We enjoy a long relationship with Joyce whose works were exhibited in Glasstress 2013, Glasstress Beirut and Glasstress New York.

Residency ProgrammesThe Brazilian artist Patricia Bagniewski successfully comple-ted her residency program at Berengo Studio sponsored by Fondazione Berengo. Her project “Housing” was comprised of 21 blown glass houses which played on social concepts of liberty and imprisonment. In early July, the Korean artist Na-Young Han completed her period of residency which was awarded to her by a jury at the 10th Premio Arte Laguna.Student Yaguel Le Gall took his first steps in the Murano furnace as resident. Véronique Marazzi, selected by the artist Maya Von Moos, the winner of Costasera Contemporary Art in the context of Premio Masi, started his experimentations in glass. The Italian artist Gaia Dallera Ferrario was invited to the presti-gious Artissima art fair in Turin, Italy. For this occasion, Gaia decided to try to work with a new medium in Berengo Studio and created a shiny version of the default Facebook avatar in glass.

UniversitiesFondazione Berengo has started an ongoing dialogue with seve-ral Venetian universities, such as the IMID Master at Iuav Uni-versity and Ca’ Foscari for the project Experior. Thanks to Pro-fessor Michele Tamma, in collaboration with Promovetro, the Berengo Studio has been presented as a case-study for innovative management approaches. A testimony on Fondazione Berengo also took place at Università Cattolica, Milan, which also forese-es a promising collaboration.
