IntroductionTaylors Nurseries was established in 1982 and is a family run business. About twenty five years ago we developed a specialist interest in clematis and since that time we have collected approximately 400 different varieties. Plants may be purchased either from the nursery, by appointment, via mail order, at various flower shows which we attend or on our website. Most of the photographs in this catalogue were taken by us on our nursery. We hope you enjoy our catalogue, Chris & Suzy.

PlantingPrepare the site by digging a hole 18” square and at least 18” deep. Break up the soil at the base of the hole and dig in a handful of bone meal. Soak your plant in a bucket of water for twenty minutes then remove the pot. Place your plant in the hole so that the top of the root ball is about 3” below ground level, snipping off lower leaves, then backfill with a mixture of peat/compost and garden soil. DO NOT USE MANURE. If your soil dries out quickly or your plant is in a position where it receives very little water, place an open ended pipe (About 1-2” diameter) in the planting hole, one end close

to the rootball the other just above ground level. By adopting this procedure water can be conveyed to the plants roots where it is most needed in times of drought. Be sure to provide plenty of support, from ground level upwards. Use either trellis or wires for best results (shown in pictures left and right) or use frames, obelisks or wigwams etc.Clematis WiltHealthy plants should not get clematis wilt. Treat infection by drenching with a suitable systemic fungicide. Please read manufacturers instructions carefully before handling these products. If a plant develops wilt, and a gallon of water does not make it recover inside 24 hours (as most suspected wilt cases are just plants drying out), cut the stem back to below the wilted section, burn or destroy all wilted growth. Water and feed normally after growth restarts. Clematis wilt generally can only affect large flowering varieties. Wilt does not kill clematis, it just sets them back.

Pruning

GROUP ONE (G1) - NO PRUNINGThese are varieties which flower on the previous seasons growth, they all flower early in the season. They include alpinas, macropetalas, montanas, koreanas and the evergreens. No pruning is required other than removing any dead or excessive growth immediately after flowering (if need be). Pruning these types at any other time may result in no or fewer flowers. It is not necessary to plant Group 1 varieties any deeper than pot level.

GROUP TWO (G2) - PRUNE LIGHTThis group consists of all early large flowered hybrids, including double and semi-double varieties. The main flowering period is May to June. When this period is over at the end of June you may give your clematis a prune, possibly a third to half of the plant pruned back or as much as you think is necessary to keep it looking neat and tidy. Then start to feed again with a high potash fertilizer in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. This will encourage new growth and more flowers for August and September time. Then in February or March prune a third to half of the top growth off again and cut out any dead. Try to leave some stems at different heights.

GROUP THREE (G3) - PRUNE HARDMedium sized flowers that flower after June, viticellas, texensis, herbaceous and tanguticas all fall into this group. These produce flowers on the current seasons growth and should be cut back to 12-18” from the ground in February/March. Failure to prune these varieties may result in your plant becoming bare of leaves and flowers near the base.

John Innes No 3 and multi-purpose mixed 50/50. When planting the clematis, 3” of the stem needs to be buried. The roots must be shaded by planting something around the top or covering with stone, slate, woodchippings etc Once planted keep well watered and fed.Support

Make sure that you have plenty of support for them vertically and horizontally about 4 inches to 6 inches apart. Use trellis, wire mesh, wires etc.

Start your support from about 6 - 12 inches above ground level for best results. Leave our cane in the

ground for support, until the clematis gets a good grip on whatever you choose to climb it through (maybe a year or so). When growing in pots make sure the obelisk you choose has regular horizontal supports (as some are better than others).

Planting in ContainersMany varieties of clematis are suitable for planting in containers. In order to get good results andmaximum flowers, compact varieties should be chosen. (Maximum height 12ft.) Good feeding and plenty of water is essential to maintain the condition of the plant and prolong flowering. With a little bit of perseverance you can achieve wonderful results. Terracota, stone, concrete or wood containers may be used, avoid plastic as they will get too hot for the roots in summer. To get the best results a large pot should be used (approx 18” deep x 18” in diameter.) Smaller ones can be used but only in the short term. Your container needs good drainage, this can be achieved by placing 2-3” of gravel in the bottom. We recommend the rest of the pot to be filled with

This sign means that plants have been given the Royal Horticultural Societies Award of Garden Merit. (AGM) Varieties have this symbol in the top right hand corner.

Carefully remove bottom leaves and place root ball 3” below compost surface.

Stone/Slate or bark chippings 1” to 2” deep to conserve moisture to keep the roots cool and inhibit weed growth

Three to four controlled release fertilizer tablets each year or use granule form just under the surface (see page 17)

Half John Innes No.3 compost and half multi purpose mixed together

18” deep x 18” diameter wood, stone or terracotta pot

2” of gravel to aid drainage

Bees & ButterfliesWith the rapid decline of bees in the last few years here are a selection of clematis that we feel are especially attractive to bees and butterfly’s.

Bees love a varied Menu so aim to provide a mixture of colours and textures as well as flower shapes and plant heights.

The 1st solitary bees emerge very early in the spring, so any of the alpina & macropetala varieties would be ideal for this period (see pages 5,6 & 7) Large mid season single flowered varieties will provide pollen for May & June (pages 9 - 14). For later flowering varieties, look at the integrifolas and any ‘bell shaped’ flowers as these are also very effective (pages 25 & 26)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has my Clematis produced buds but they are not opening? This is due to a lack of feed, use a high potash feed when watering (tomato or rosefeed are very good) twice a week from March to whenever they start to open.

What can I grow Clematis up or through?Anything really, trellis, strong wires, other climbing plants (roses are good companion plants) Obelisks, wigwams, the list is endless. They can even be trailed across a bed of heathers if you wish!

Can I plant two Clematis together?Yes of course, try and make sure they are both in the same pruning group, as this will make it easier for you when it comes around to pruning them.

I’ve planted my Clematis following your instructions but they don’t seem to be growing?

Plenty of water and feed will be the solution, often people forget to feed their clematis enough. They are very heavy feeders and enjoy potash based feeds twice a week from march until may. If they are still not growing well then try cutting them back again (about half way) and continue to feed.

My soil is like clay will Clematis survive this? You will need to improve your soil greatly with John Innes number 3 or plenty of garden compost, as Clematis do not like to be stood in water.

My Soil is very poor, can I grow Clematis in pots?Yes, Clematis can definitely be grown in pots. They grow really well in deep pots (at least 18 inches in width and depth) The taller the Clematis the deeper the pot required. The Boulevard collection are ideal for pots and have been dubbed the ‘Patio collection’ also in some books and magazine articles (see page 15&16).

Frequently Asked Questions

I need to cover an area quickly, which are the best for this? The Armandii & Montana varieties are known as the mile a minute clematis, these will do the job very well.

Are there any scented large flowered varieties of Clematis? Not really. You may get a slight scent from Guernsey Cream or Rhapsody, but there are plenty of smaller flowered types that are highly scented, look at page 27 or on the ‘scented’ category of the website. www.taylorsclematis.co.uk/clematis-scented-clematis

My garden is very dry, are there any varieties that will survive this?Try and improve your soil with plenty of garden compost and mulch, although we personally don’t recommend manure unless it is used well away from the stems, Clematis Flammula and triternata will both tolerate dryer conditions.

Which varieties are good for full sun?The florida types are excellent for full sun, however they do need shelter from strong winds.

I have a very shady spot in my garden, are there any that will survive here?

As long as it’s not ‘forest like’ conditions, yes there are many that will grow in North facing spots, look on the will tolerate ‘shade’ section of our website.www.taylorsclematis.co.uk/clematis-will-tolerate-shade

I planted my Clematis last year and it did very well, but this year there is nothing, are they hardy?

Our Clematis are fully hardy plants. It could be that slugs or snails have eaten the new shoots or even mice! They normally come through this though but you will have to be patient!

Frequently Asked QuestionsThe colour of my Clematis is not the same as it is in your catalogue or on the website?

The colours are given as a guide only, there are lots of things that can affect colour changes, such as: Soil types, sun or shade positions, age of flower (the bloom can look totally different as it just opens compared to when it finishes flowering) and amount of water and feed they are given etc.

I have a windy spot in my garden are there any that will survive here?Yes, Alpinas and Macropetalas are the best for early spring flowers, we sell lots of these for coastal regions. Also Viticellas are really good too for later flowering. See pages 5, 6, 7, 21 & 22 or search by species on our website. www.taylorsclematis.co.uk/Clematis-by-species

Are there any varieties that are wilt resistant?Yes, Viticellas, Montanas, Alpinas, Macropetalas and Herbaceous types are all fully resistant. See pages 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 & 26 or search by species on our website. www.taylorsclematis.co.uk/Clematis-by-species

My Clematis is in the wrong spot, can I move it? and if so when? The best time to move Clematis is around February/March just after they have been pruned. Any plant under 5 year old will be ok, anything older than this will be a risk.

My plant is going brown from the bottom up, is this Clematis wilt? No, this is simply drying out. Clematis are very thirsty plants so give them plenty of water. In Spring/Summer if the plant is very brown, cut it back to about 18 inches from the base, this will encourage fresh new growth to come from lower down the plant. (from august onwards it’s best left until Feb/March the following year).Always remove the dead leaves below the point which you have cut it back too.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to buy Clematis? With our Clematis you can plant them at anytime of year as long as you can get your spade into the ground! As all our Clematis are at least 2 years old, and have fully mature root systems.

I think my Clematis has got Wilt?

Clematis Wilt is a systemic condition that only really affects plants that are under sufferance. Healthy Clematis should not suffer from the wilt, however if you have a clematis that is of the large flowered kind (eg Group 2 varieties) that has all of a sudden drooped overnight (or very quickly). If a gallon of water does not see it pick up within 12 hours then water in a good quality fungicide. Then cut the plant back to where the the wilt has started (depending on how long it’s been will depend on how far the wilt has travelled down the stem) then destroy the affected stems. Water regular and start to feed with a potash based feed (tomato food ) as soon as fresh growth starts to appear. As long as the clematis has been planted deep in the first instance, the plant will re-shoot even if the wilt has travelled all the way to ground level.

My Clematis has holes in it’s leaves, why? It’s probably earwigs they only come our at night and hide under the leaves through the day. Turn a terracotta pot upside down with straw underneath next to the plant, this will encourage them to hide under there (and not under your clematis leaves). Once inside the pot dispose or re-locate them.

Which Clematis can be used as a cut flower? The herbaceous types seem to be the best as their stems are thicker than most. They can survive about 2 weeks in water. Pages 24,25 & 26

Herbaceous Clematis are the best to use as the stems are a lot thicker than other varieties, this means that they can take a good amount of water up the stem and last up to 3 weeks in a vase! The herbaceous clematis are generally a ‘scrambling’ clematis and do not climb, so in a garden situation they lend themselves very well to just growing in beds and borders at ground level. When grown for cut flower its best to ‘Stake’ them upwards (so the flowers don’t get damaged) see all our cut flower varieties on pages 24, 25 & 26.

Conditions of SaleThis catalogue cancels any previous issues. All varieties are offered subject to availability, we reserve the right to alter prices anytime throughout the season. Every effort is made to see that our stock is correctly named and of the highest quality, however, neglect, poor planting conditions, adverse weather conditions and damage by animals could lead to plants failing.

It is therefore impossible for us to consider complaints fourteen days after purchase. Plants will be replaced at our discretion on the understanding that the whole plant is returned along with the label and proof of posting within fourteen days. The placing of an order or the acceptance of a plant implies the acceptance of these conditions. The descriptions and photographs in this catalogue are intended as a guide only, planting varieties in different aspects and climates can have an effect on colour, height and flowering.

Mail Order (1-2 Working Days UK)Normal delivery days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays,Thursdays and Fridays. Saturdays are possible for a £5 surcharge. We would appreciate it if you could give us a block of 2 working days that you will be home (or we could send them to your work place) as we mostly require a signature on delivery. If you can not receive the plants they may be left with a neighbour or left in a safe place of your choice without a signature at your own risk. Payment can be made by cheque, postal order or credit cards. Cheques should be made payable to Taylors Clematis with your name and address written on the back. If you wish to pay by credit card please fill in the box on the order form and double check your details are correct.

Although we only send out 2-year old plants, they may be smaller in height (not pot size), due to pruning in winter or early spring. They are all still plantable and garden ready, this is of no detriment to the clematis as the root system is the most important part. All our plants are grown in large 2 litre pots (minimum) and on 3 feet canes.
