To be eligible for the Valedictorian or Salutatorian awards, a senior must attend Stanton County High School a minimum of one year, which shall include his/her senior year. The grade point average will be computed at the conclusion of the eighth semester and will be based on a 4.0 scale. Any charges, fines, fees or returns (lunchroom, library, and textbooks) must be paid at the time the student leaves from school.

STUDENT POLICIES Academic Success

A successful Kansas High School Graduate has the Academic preparation Cognition preparation

Technical skills Employability skills and

Civic engagement to be successful in postsecondary education, in the attainment of an industry recognized

certification or in a workforce, without the need for remediation. Steps taken at Stanton County Junior/Senior High School to realize this success include:

• Individual Plans of Study will help students obtain a suitable vision of their path toward college and career readiness.

• Students will have an opportunity to review their grades with their Advisor Base teacher.

Attendance

Our attendance policy is not intended to penalize students who have an occasional illness or miss infrequently for approved reasons. It does, however, emphasize that students are accountable for their attendance.

Attendance Procedure When a student is absent, parents are to call the school (620-492-6284) between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to report the absence. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each

Page 7: 2017-2018 STANTON COUNTY JR/SR HIGH STUDENT/PARENT ... · STANTON COUNTY JR/SR HIGH . STUDENT/PARENT HANDBOOK . BOE approved July 10, 2017 . MISSION STATEMENT USD 452 strives for

7

period of the day. Parents who do not contact the school by phone need to send a written excuse with the student upon student’s return to school. Documentation of medical or legal appointments should be presented as the absences occur. Any student’s absence not excused by a phone call from the custodial parent or guardian on the day of the absence or by a note written by the custodial parent or guardian on the day the student returns to school, will render the absence classification as unexcused until the parent has made contact.

Dismissal and Departure Please help with a smooth dismissal process by waiting in your car or outside the front doors of the school building for your student when school has ended. We will dismiss students in an orderly manner to ensure their safety. With your cooperation, we will limit the congestion that occurs during the dismissal process. Any student not going home in the usual manner must have a note from their legal parent/guardian. The note should be given to their teacher or office. Without a note, the student will not be permitted to walk, ride, or leave with another person other than the legal parent/guardian.

Excused/Unexcused Absences The principal or his designated representative shall be responsible for determining if an absence is excused or unexcused. It is important for all students and parents to know that an absence that is excused at home does not mean it will be excused at school. The following criteria will be considered in making this determination: • Excused Absences Personal illness, death in the family, medical or legal appointments, pre-arranged absence

requested by parent and approved by the administration, severe weather conditions, college/career visits

• Unexcused Absences Unexcused absences are those not covered in the excused category. Students who are considered unexcused to a class will receive one/half hour of detention, their parents called and further disciplinary measures may be determined.

Excessive Absences Parents will be notified by letter when their student has missed five (5) days during a semester. Any student, who is excessively absent as defined in this policy, will have all subsequent absences deemed unexcused. Consequences for unexcused absences are enforced by the state statutes on truancy.

Late Arrivals/Tardiness Students who arrive at school after the tardy bell must report to the office for a pass to class. A list of students tardy to class will be kept in the office each day. The teacher or principal in charge of running the detention program will escort all the tardy students to the detention room before the dismissal bell rings at the end of each school day so that the detentions may be served in a timely manner.

Leaving Campus Trips with parents, appointments, etc: Students cannot leave campus during school hours without receiving permission of the custodial parent and an administrator. When a student must leave

Page 8: 2017-2018 STANTON COUNTY JR/SR HIGH STUDENT/PARENT ... · STANTON COUNTY JR/SR HIGH . STUDENT/PARENT HANDBOOK . BOE approved July 10, 2017 . MISSION STATEMENT USD 452 strives for

campus for a Dr’s appointment, parents may come in to sign the student out, send a note, or call the office. When permission is granted the student must sign out at the office. (Please see the section “Breakfast Lunch Program” (p.13) for the policy regarding students leaving campus for lunch.

Makeup Policy Students will be allowed to make up missed assignments if the absence is excused. It is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements to complete assignments with teachers. Students who miss school due to vacations or family business known in advance, should get their assignments prior to the absence. The students will be granted a minimum of two school days for each day missed to complete their assignment. However, it may be impossible to earn daily participation grades during an absence. Class work missed due to suspension will be allowed to be made up for credit.

Truancy Under the Kansas Compulsory Attendance Statutes (KSA 72-1113), regular school attendance is required of all students enrolled in elementary and secondary schools. A student is considered to be truant if (1) he/she is under 16 years of age and is not enrolled in a public or private school or (2) he/she is inexcusably absent for three consecutive days, five school days in a semester, or seven school days in a school year whichever occurs first.

EXPECTATIONS The USD 452 Board of Education believes that standards for student behavior must be set cooperatively through interaction among the students, parents and guardians, staff, and community members of the school district, producing an atmosphere that encourages students to grow in self-discipline. The development of this atmosphere requires respect for self and others, as well as for district and community property on the part of students, staff, and community members.

Consequences may include, but are not limited to: detention, suspension, or expulsion. Remedial measures shall be designed to: correct the problem behavior, prevent another occurrence of the behavior, and protect the victim of the act. Effective discipline should employ a school-wide approach.

COMPLAINT PROCESS The USD 452 Board of Education requires the principal and/or designee at each school to be responsible for receiving complaints alleging bullying behaviors. All school employees are required to report alleged bullying behaviors to the principal and/or designee. All other members of the school community, including students, parents, volunteers, and visitors, are encouraged to report any act that may be deemed a bullying behavior. The USD 452 Board of Education requires the principal and/or designee to be responsible for determining whether an alleged act constitutes bullying behavior. In so doing, the principal and/or designee shall conduct a prompt, thorough, and complete investigation of each alleged incident. When appropriate, these offenses will be reported to law enforcement officials using the district approved form.

KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION (KSHSAA) SPORTSMANSHIP/CITIZENSHIP RULE 52

The effective American secondary school must support both an academic program and an activities program. We believe that these programs must do more than merely coexist; they must be integrated and support each other in “different” arenas. The concept of “sportsmanship” must be taught, modeled, expected and reinforced in the classroom and in all competitive activities. Therefore, all Kansas State High School Activities Association members stand together in support of the following sportsmanship policy. Activities are an important aspect of the total education process in the American schools. They provide an arena for participants to grow, to excel, to understand and to value the concepts of SPORTSMANSHIP and teamwork. They are an opportunity for coaches and school staff to teach and model SPORTSMANSHIP, to build school pride, and to increase student/community involvement; this ultimately translates into improved academic performance. Activities are also an opportunity for the community to demonstrate its support for the participants and the school, and to model the concepts of SPORTSMANSHIP for our youth as respected representatives of society. Sportsmanship is good citizenship in action!

This is a Kansas High School Activities Association regulation and will be followed as set. State Level competitions also hold precedence over regular season activities. Members of the cheer and dance squads may also play basketball. Eligibility will be turned in to the office every Friday by 8:00am. Assignments turned in near the cut-off date/time may not be included in the grade book for eligibility grades. Any student who has an “F” is ineligible for the next week’s activities. Any student who has two or more “D” grades in the same course for two consecutive weeks is ineligible for the next week’s activities.
