3RD ANNUAL RIVERSIDE COUNTY SUMMER PRINCIPAL’S INSTITUTE

“Our nation’s underperforming schools and children are unlikely to succeed until we get serious about leadership. As much as anyone in public education, it is the principal who is in a position to ensure that good teaching and learning spreads beyond single

classrooms, and that ineffective practices aren’t simply allowed to fester.”

Wallace Foundation

This two-day Principal Institute led by Dr. Chris Emdin will speak directly to site administrators and their designees providing them with insights and strategies on creating a climate where reality pedagogy is embraced. Participants will engage in content that will help them:

• Ensure site administrators have the knowledge, skills and tools to create a climate that engages all students especially students of color.

• Establish an action plan utilizing coaching techniques that will guide principals in the continuous improvement process and facilitate a structure for reflective practice.

• Asses the culture of school site to determine readiness of school structures to support teachers in engaging students from diverse backgrounds.

• Collaborate with district support to provide the appropriate system resources that address the needs of schools.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY SUPPORT

With the advent of California Standards, the Professional Learning Community process is more relevant than ever. One of the foundational 21st century skills is collaboration, and teachers have a wonderful opportunity to model this skill as they work together to address the essential questions of student achievement:

• What do we want students to learn? • How will we know they have learned it? • How will we engage them in relevant learning? • What will we do when they do not learn it? What better way for teachers

to master the challenges of the California Standards curriculum.

PRINCIPAL/ADMINISTRATOR COACHING

The Leadership Institute of Riverside County (LIRC) offers executive coaching services for site and district administrators in Riverside County school districts. The LIRC’s coaching model offers a collaborative process that engages the principal (coaches) in a one-to-one, confidential relationship with a coach who is available to provide a support around a wide-range of challenges. LIRC coaches support the principal’s and/ or administrator’s professional and personal development allowing them to set new goals and improve results. Our coaches facilitate personal insight and the creation of new experiences using the InsideOut coaching model.

“Given the quality of school leadership is the second most important factor in student achievement (after the quality of teachers); school districts must create the conditions

to systematically support, develop, and retain highly effective leaders. Transformational improvement is an effective way to accomplish this objective.”

LEADERSHIP TEAM DEVELOPMENT

"We need more time for collaboration.” “Our grading practices are outdated.” “We need a better system of assigning teachers.” “Even though I am the principal, I can’t do this work alone.” Are these reflective of the sentiments of teachers on your staff? Teacher leadership is key to the successful implementation of change to address structural and systemic change on a school campus. Skilled teacher leaders extend the leadership of the principal through building trust and engaging colleagues in powerful learning conversations that lead to actions to affect desired change. This training will assist both administrators and their leadership team in designing and implementing actions for success.
