school nickname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

school colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

Todd Steidley, a for-mer national champion for Central Oklahoma who went on to win sev-en state titles as a high school coach in the state, is in his second year at the helm of the Bron-chos.

Steidley had an imme-diate impact during the 2016-17 campaign, lead-ing UCO to the first unde-

feated dual season (18-0) in the illustrious history of a program that has captured 15 national championships. The 18 wins stretched Central's winning streak to a school-record 25.

The Bronchos claimed the Mid-America Intercolle-giate Athletics Association dual title and finished sec-ond in the league tournament while also winning the Jet Invitational. Steidley's team also finished fourth in the West Regional and qualified five individuals for the NCAA Division II national tournament, coming in 18th with two All-Americans.

A prep standout at Tulsa Union High School, Todd was a Division I qualifier at Utah State before spending his last two seasons at UCO. He went 64-11-2 with the Bronchos from 1986-88, winning the 142-pound nation-al title as a junior and finishing runner-up as a senior.

Steidley spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at UCO, helping the Bronchos capture the NAIA team title in 1989 before finishing second in the school’s first year in NCAA Division II in 1990.

He served as assistant coach at Clemson in 1990-91 before going to Enid High School as head coach for one year. Steidley moved on to Bristow High School, where he guided the Pirates to three Class 3A state champi-onships during a six-year career.

Todd went next to Ponca City High School and coached the Wildcats to four consecutive Class 6A ti-tles during a tenure that went from 1998-06. Steidley, who finished with a phenomenal 211-18 career dual

The newest addition to the Central Oklahoma wrestling staff is Scott Chenoweth, a former Division I All-American and highly-successful high school head coach who joined the program in September 2017.

Chenoweth was a three-time state champion at Perry High School in addition to winning a Junior National Freestyle national title. He went on to have great suc-cess at the University of Nebraska, finishing as a three-time All-American for the Huskers.

Scott returned to his alma mater to take over as head coach in 1995 and led the Maroons to unprecedented success during a 16-year tenure. He guided the Ma-roons to 12 state championships and 11 dual state titles in that span while coach-ing 42 individual state champions.

Chenoweth served as USA Junior World Freestyle team coach in 2008 and 2010 and was a National Coach of the Year finalist in 2010. He was inducted into the

Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for Lifetime Service to Wrestling in 2011.Chenoweth left coaching 2011, but continued as an administrator in Perry until 2017.Scott is married (Sage) and has two children (Sebastian and Savannah).

Former Division I All-American and Olympian Sam Hazewinkel is in his second year as an assistant coach for the Central Oklahoma wrestling program.

Hazewinkel had an immediate impact after coming to UCO for the 2016-17 sea-son, helping lead the Bronchos to the first unbeaten dual season (18-0) in school history and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association dual champion-ship.

Hazewinkel, of the same family inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, brings one of the better resumes and pedigrees in all of wrestling to UCO. National champion, All-American, Olympian -- Hazewinkel has done it all.

Same went 140-0 in high school at Pensacola Christian Academy and was a three-time state champion. From there, he went to the University of Oklahoma and was a four-time All-American and a four-time Academic All-American.

Also a four-time U.S. Open Champion, twice in Freestyle and twice in Greco, Hazewinkel was a 2008 University World Champion in Greco. The same year, he served as alternate for the Olympics and in 2012 was also an Olympian in both Freestyle and Greco.

After competing in the Olympics, Hazewinkel joined his father and uncle as Olympians. Sam and his father, Dave, are the only father-son Olympians in American wrestling history.

Sam is married (Rachel) and has one son (Josh).

season outlook

The University of Cen-tral Oklahoma wres-tling team returns in

2017-18 looking to contin-ue its dominance on the mat and contend for yet another national title. Cen-tral returns 21 grapplers to the mat this season, with nine starters back includ-ing four national qualifiers and one All-American.

Todd Steidley, a Broncho alum and former national champion, took over the program last season and led Central to an 18-0 dual record and the regular sea-son MIAA Championship. The Bronchos then took second in the conference tournament, fourth in re-gionals, and 18th at na-tionals.

“We’re pretty excited about this season,” Steid-ley said. “Last year was a big year for us, and me too being my first year as a col-lege coach. I learned a lot and I’m ready to help push these guys to the next level and go after that national championship. That’s the goal here, anything short of that is not acceptable.

“They know that too, and that’s what their goals are,” Steidley continued. “We want to send 10 guys to the national tour-nament so we can bring home another champi-onship and hang another banner in the gym.”

Steidley said a shift in offseason training is build-ing a stronger Broncho bunch more suited for the postseason tournaments.

“We want to win every dual,” Steidley said. “Hav-ing the win streak and the undefeated season, that’s nice, but we want to be ready to win in the post-season and we’re getting ready for that.”

Central returns 21 from last year’s squad. Seven seniors lead the way for the Bronchos. Among a group of transfers and freshman, Steidley has added depth to the room. Here is a weight-by-weight breakdown of the 2017-18 UCO Bronchos.

125In the deepest weight

for the Bronchos, UCO re-turns a pair of upperclass-men contending for early match points.

Josh Lindsey headlines the bunch, returning after a trip to the national tour-nament last season. Lind-sey made a late push last year to get to nationals, af-ter missing significant time on the mat with an injury. When healthy, he’s one of the best in the country.

Zac D’Amico will get mat time here too. The senior has rotated with Lindsey in the past, and both are ca-pable of picking up wins to start the Bronchos off on the right track.

Tim Null (So.) and Noah McQuigg (RFr.) could also jump in the mix. Null is easing into the rotation,

while McQuigg is looking to build off a respectable redshirt season.

133UCO isn’t as deep at 133,

but that also doesn’t mean the Bronchos aren’t strong at the position.

Blake Dauphin returns for his junior season and has been a mainstay in the lineup since his arrival on campus. With 48 career wins already, Dauphin is looking to continue to im-prove, and make the jump from six-time tournament placer to national qualifier.

Rio Zamora alternated with Dauphin as a redshirt freshman last season, and will fight for more time at the spot. Zamora is an athletic grappler who gives the Bronchos options

UCO heavyweight Caleb Cotter earned All-American honors after going 33-5 as a junior last season. Cotter is ranked as the No. 4 heavyweight in the country in the preseason coaches’ poll.

season outlookwhen it comes to putting out a lineup. The Ardmore native won 15 matches last season.

Josh Breece gives the Bronchos a veteran pres-ence in the wrestling room as he also competes for time at 133.

141A wide-open race for the

Bronchos.Following the gradua-

tion of All-American Josh-ua Ailey, the Bronchos are left with a hole to fill.

Cy Trindle is the most experienced hopeful. The junior went 4-4 last season in a pair of open tourna-ments for UCO.

True freshmen Brik Filip-po and Nate Keim will also take a shot at it. Both are second generation Bron-chos and both won state championships at 145 in Oklahoma last spring.

149Similar to most every

other position, UCO has a strong returner at 149 in Will Stetlzlen.

The junior had a big sea-son a year ago, wrestling almost 50 matches and racking up the points in the process. Wrestled as a true freshman, then took a redshirt before returning to the lineup last season. Gives UCO key leadership in the middle of the lineup.

Tim O’Connor is a senior and despite not having as much mat experience, still

brings a fight every time out. UCO also has a veter-an reserve in Briar Stopp, and an intriguing newcom-er in Nate Keim that makes 149 just another deep spot for the Bronchos.

157National qualifier Bry-

an Dutton returns for his senior season looking to improve his standout cam-paign a year ago.

The Guthrie native won 34 matches last season, placing second at regionals to earn a trip to the nation-al championships. He also placed third in the MIAA Championships. Dutton will be the regular starter, though he has some com-petition in the wrestling room.

Jerrod McKinstry re-turns and is joined by Day-ton Garrett (So.) and Nich-olas Speno (RFr.). Stopp can also move into 157 to help out, as will true fresh-man Elijah Tanner.

165UCO has three returning

pieces at 165 to make it a veteran spot for the Bron-chos.

Dakota Head made a late surge to take over the po-sition last season, and will look to continue that this year. Head won 10 matches – all in the second semes-ter – last season on his way to a third-place finish at the MIAA Championships.

Mason Thompson will

also compete for regular mat time. The junior won 12 matches in open tour-naments during a redshirt season, and 29 the follow-ing year, before battling injuries last season. His re-turn could lead to dominat-ing spot for the Bronchos.

Justin Walker also re-turns for UCO. The red-shirt freshman won three matches in his only open tournament appearance last season.

174Another spot with a

prominent returner and a bright future, is 174 pounds.

Miguel Barreras won a team-high 38 matches last season including 29 bo-nus-point wins. He also led the team with more than 100 takedowns. Barreras won the 174-pound title at the MIAA Champion-ships, but didn’t place at regionals. He’s on the hunt to make up for that this season and join his team-mates at the national tour-nament.

Reid Rodich (Sr.) and Seth Fritts (RFr.) will also join in the mix.

184UCO thins out near the

end of the lineup, but like a couple of positions earli-er, the Bronchos are by no means down at this spot.

Joel Dixon sat out last season after transferring from Oklahoma. He should

fill the starter role. Sopho-more Heath Gray will give Dixon some competition in the wrestling room, and give the Bronchos an op-tion at this weight.

197UCO is looking for its

next dominant 197 follow-ing the loss due to injury of returning national qualifi-er Greg Wilson in the pre-season.

Steidley brought in ju-nior Josh Lantham from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M to fill most of that role. The Bronchos could also see some moving around, whether it be up from 184, or down from one of the heavyweights.

Hvy.Caleb Cotter headlines

the Broncho lineup in 2017-18, returning after an All-American season during his junior campaign last year.

Cotter is ranked No. 4 in the country in the wrestling coaches’ preseason rank-ings, a position he held for most of last year. He went 33-5 last year and had nine technical falls, the second most in Central Oklahoma’s long, storied history.

There are more com-peting for time too. Kyle Factor is a veteran on the mat – 46 career wins – and could split time with Cotter. Newcomers Blake Berryhill (RFr.) and Dylan Prince (Fr.) might also see time.

Edmond is located in the heart of Oklahoma, just north of the state capital in Oklahoma City, and has a population of over 90,000 as one of the fastest growing cities in the state.

Edmond has the best of both worlds including, easy access to the city with just enough distance to maintain a close-knit community atmosphere.

The city offers outstanding hotels, nostalgic shopping areas and conve-niently located attractions for your enjoyment. Known for its outstand-ing golf courses, Edmond has hosted some of the most exciting PGA and celebrity events in the past two decades at world-famous Oak Tree Golf Club.

Edmond is the fastest growing, most economically dynamic city in Oklahoma. Thriving technology firms, diverse retail and com-mercial opportunities, and small corporate office headquarters have enhanced its reputation as the affluent residential suburb to the metropolitan area.

There are many more activities in Edmond, with a variety of music, art, theatre, water and sporting events that make for spectacu-lar family fun.

Heard on Hurd is a monthly festival where Downtown Edmond is transformed into an exciting mix of food trucks, family friendly excitement, and music that has become one of the premier, socially engaging events in the area.

Edmond also boasts one of the best Fourth of July fireworks shows in the country, and it’s held right here at UCO. More than 125,000 people attend the event. LibertyFest has been previously chosen by CNN and USA Today as one of the top 10 places to be in America on July 4.

Another Edmond attraction is Lake Arcadia. Home to the Center for Outdoor Adventure Recreation, Lake Arcadia offers trails for running, hiking, and cycling, as well as 1,820 surface acres for boating, skiing, kayaking, and fishing, and 26 miles of shoreline for more fun.

The largest city in the state, Oklahoma City borders Ed-mond to the south and sits at the crossroads of I-35, I-40 and I-44, leaving OKC with more than 130 miles of federal and insterstate highways.

More than 1.3 million peo-ple call metro Oklahoma City home.

The City, as it is commonly referred to around the state, offers numerous things to do on any given day of the week – or year for that matter. Whether it is sports, music, art, or just getting outside on a nice day, OKC offers it all.

Chesapeake Energy Arena in downtown Oklahoma City is not only home to the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, but it also hosts concerts year-round, as well as other events such as pro wrestling, bull riding, and more.

Bricktown, the central hub of entertainment in down-town, is home to Bricktown Ballpark, where the Oklahoma City Dodgers – Triple-A affiliate to MLB’s L.A. Dodgers – play ball. The ballpark also hosts high school games, collegiate tournaments, as well as con-certs of its own.

There is plenty more to do, especially on the booming, Oklahoma River.

The UCO rowing team calls the river home and has a state-of-the-art boathouse on the river to prove it. Visitors can also enjoy the Riversport Adventure District, where you can challenge yourself through a white-water rapids course, zip line across the river, or bungee jump among other fun activities.

There are also five lakes in the greater OKC metro area that offer ample fun including fishing, running or cycling trails, and swimming.

There are also more than a dozen golf courses to choose from.

Along with art museums, a science museum, and many more, there is always some-thing to do in OKC.

The Adventure District is just 10 minutes from UCO and offers many fun things to do.

Remington Park races horses more than half of the year, the Oklahoma City Zoo is always a top-pick, and it sits right next to the science museum.

If you venture west of down-town toward the fairgrounds, you can find more fun.

Home to the Oklahoma State Fair every September, as well as shows year-round, the fairgrounds offer countless entertainment options.

Oklahoma City is in a warm southwest climate. It sees more than 300 days of sun-shine on average per year.

The average temperature annually is 60 degrees accord-ing to the Oklahoma City Vis-itors Convention Bureau. OKC also sees on average 32.03 inches of rain and nine inches of snow every year.

athletic Director

eDDie griffin

Eddie Griffin returned to his alma mater as the new director of athletics in October of 2017.Griffin comes to UCO after serving as the president of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Jim Thorpe Asso-

ciation. He also served as an athletic director for Oklahoma City Public Schools and Northeastern State University, as well as head wrestling coach at Clemson University.

Griffin, who graduated with his Master of Education from Central and later became the head wrestling coach for the Bronchos, helped lay a foundation for success in athletics at UCO. He led the Bronchos to three of their first four national championships in wrestling. In 2008, Griffin was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame.

Prior to coaching at Clemson University, Griffin’s four-year run as UCO’s head wrestling coach not only set the tone for the Bronchos to become one of the most revered programs in the country, but it rivals that of any coach in the sport.

He was named the Rookie Coach of the Year by Amateur Wrestling News in 1979. He coached 26 All-Americans, 11 individual national cham-pions and put together a 40-18-1 dual record that included wins over Alabama, Arizona, Brigham Young, Oregon and Washington. Central Oklahoma enters its sixth year as a member of the Mid-Ameri-ca Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 17 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 indi-vidual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volley-ball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf, ten-nis and bowling.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercol-legiate Athletic Association to the Mid-Amer-ica Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originat-ed in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Wash-burn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missou-ri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reor-ganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Cen-

tral Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as com-missioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Mike Racy is the current commissioner and began in January of 2017 following Boerigter’s retirement.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri South-ern and Missouri Western began competi-tion in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA fol-lowing the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lin-coln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, Nebras-ka-Omaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and Northeastern State all become league members with the start of the 2012-13 academic year.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which leaves the conference with 14 schools. Lincoln and SBU are associate members and don’t compete in football.
